In a Mexican kitchen, foam on a hot drink is old news. Chocolate de mesa has been beaten to a froth with a wooden molinillo for generations, and a mug of café con leche tastes rounder when the hot milk is light and airy. A milk frother does the same job with a motor: it whips air into milk, warm or cold, for cappuccinos, lattes, foamy Mexican hot chocolate and the occasional cup of atole-thick cocoa on a cold night.
There are three kinds. Handheld wands are cheap and small but need milk you heat yourself. Countertop jug frothers heat and froth at the push of a button. Manual pump frothers have no motor at all. This guide covers eight frothers across all three, using what each maker states and what America’s Test Kitchen found when it compared them.

Quick verdict: which milk frother to buy
For most homes, the best milk frother is the Breville Milk Café: America’s Test Kitchen named it its countertop winner, it heats and froths up to three cups at once, and Breville says the jug goes in the dishwasher. On a smaller budget, ATK’s countertop Best Buy is the Instant Milk Frother. If you only want a cheap wand for the occasional foamy chocolate, buy ATK’s handheld winner, the Zulay Milk Boss. For iced drinks with cold foam, the Nespresso Aeroccino 3, and for latte-art microfoam from a handheld, the Subminimal NanoFoamer.
If you already own a molinillo and like the ritual, you may not need any of these; our molinillo vs. whisk guide explains when a hand tool is enough.

Our picks for the best milk frother
These eight frothers cover the three ways to foam milk at home: countertop jugs that heat and froth for you, handheld wands for warm milk you heat on the stove or in the microwave, and a manual pump with no motor at all. Each pick below says who it suits, what the maker states, and one honest reason to skip it.
1. Breville Milk Café Frother – Three Cups, Your Temperature

America’s Test Kitchen rated the Breville Milk Café (model BMF600XL) Highly Recommended and named it its countertop winner, calling it “the most convenient and versatile of the bunch.” It is a stainless jug on an induction base: you drop in a latte disc or a cappuccino disc, add milk, choose a temperature and press start, and the machine shuts itself off when the milk reaches it, according to the listing.
Capacity is what sets it apart for a family. Breville rates the jug at three cups, while its instructions advise staying under a 500 ml mark for the best froth. That is enough hot milk for a round of café con leche or a pot of foamy hot chocolate at once. The lid has a measuring cap so you can add cocoa or chai while it mixes; Breville marks it for hot chocolate. With Mexican chocolate tablets, grate them fine first so they dissolve.
Because the heat comes from induction in the base, the jug itself has no wires, and Breville says you can put it in the dishwasher. The listing gives 500 watts and a one-year limited warranty. It is the largest and most expensive frother here.
Why we like it
- ATK’s countertop winner (same model)
- Adjustable temperature with auto shut-off
- Latte and cappuccino discs included
- Dishwasher-safe jug, per Breville
Key specifications
| Frother | Breville Milk Café (BMF600XL) |
|---|---|
| Type | Countertop induction jug |
| Capacity | 3 cups (Breville); froth below the 500 ml mark |
| Hot/cold foam | Hot foam and hot milk; cold mode not stated in listing |
| Power | 500 W, 110–120 V |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | Jug |
| Warranty | 1 year limited |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you make milky drinks for more than one person most days and want to set the temperature rather than guess.
Skip it if counter space is tight or you only foam a splash of milk now and then; a wand costs a fraction as much.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Largest capacity here
- Chocolate measuring cap
- Jug cleans in the dishwasher
Cons
- Most expensive pick
- Bulky on the counter
2. Instant Milk Frother, 4-in-1 – Four Settings, Two Buttons

The Instant Milk Frother (model 140-6001-01) is ATK’s countertop Best Buy, and the reviewers said it “did a good job at making cappuccino foam from both whole and almond milk.” It is the same model number as this listing.
It has four programs: cold foam, light warm foam, dense warm foam, and warm milk with no foam. Two buttons select, start and stop. The listing gives 500 watts, a 10-ounce (295 ml) jug, a cool-touch exterior, a side handle and a pouring spout. Instant’s own page lists overheat protection and auto-off, and says the lid and whisk are dishwasher safe; the jug has a nonstick interior, though Instant does not name the coating.
Ten ounces covers one large latte or two small cups of foamy chocolate, so it suits one or two people better than a crowd. ATK’s reservation, from an earlier update, was that it offers less customization than its winner: you pick a program, not a temperature.
Why we like it
- ATK’s countertop Best Buy (same model)
- Cold foam plus two warm foam textures
- Warm-milk setting with no foam
- Cool-touch body with a pouring spout
Key specifications
| Frother | Instant Milk Frother 4-in-1 (140-6001-01) |

| Hot/cold foam | Cold foam, light warm foam, dense warm foam, warm milk |
| Power | 500 W |

| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want push-button hot and cold foam for one or two drinks without paying for the Breville.
Skip it if you want to choose an exact temperature or froth for a group.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Four programs cover most drinks
- Worked with almond milk in ATK’s review
- Compact jug
Cons
- No temperature control
- Jug is hand-wash only
3. Zulay Milk Boss Handheld Frother – Simple Foam for Very Little

ATK rated the Zulay Kitchen Milk Boss Highly Recommended and named it its handheld winner, saying it “consistently made satisfying foam at the push of a button.” This listing is Zulay’s Classic Milk Boss with two Duracell AA batteries and a metal stand; ATK lists its tested model as OG_1, so check that the listing still says Milk Boss when you buy.
A wand like this does not heat anything. You warm the milk in a pan or the microwave, then whisk it in the mug for a few seconds. That is close to how we think about a molinillo: the heat comes from the stove, the foam from your hand. It is also handy for whisking a spoonful of cocoa or Mexican chocolate syrup into cold milk.
Zulay says the whisk is stainless steel and cleans by running it briefly under hot water, and it backs the frother with a lifetime guarantee. ATK noted that handheld frothers suit people who are willing to heat milk first.
Why we like it
- ATK’s handheld winner
- Batteries and a stand included
- Works in any mug or glass
- Lifetime guarantee, per Zulay
Key specifications
| Frother | Zulay Kitchen Classic Milk Boss (ATK tested OG_1) |
|---|---|
| Type | Handheld battery wand |
| Capacity | Your mug or jug |
| Hot/cold foam | Froths warm or cold milk; does not heat |
| Power | 2 AA batteries (included) |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | Not stated; rinse the whisk under hot water |
| Warranty | Lifetime guarantee (Zulay) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want foamy milk now and then and are happy to heat the milk yourself.
Skip it if you want hands-off heating; a countertop jug does both steps.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Lowest cost of the electric picks
- Fits in a drawer
- Also mixes cocoa and matcha
Cons
- Does not heat milk
- Runs on disposable batteries
4. Nespresso Aeroccino 3 – Stable Cold Foam

The Aeroccino 3 is the small black jug that comes bundled with many Nespresso machines, and it is sold on its own here. ATK rated it Recommended and said it “created a stable cold foam that topped off iced drinks nicely,” which makes it a good fit for iced coffee and cold brew in a Houston summer.
The listing describes three modes: hot milk foam, hot milk and cold froth, with automatic shut-off and a nonstick interior. Nespresso gives the capacity as 120 ml (about 4 ounces) for foam and 240 ml (about 8 ounces) for hot milk, which is one or two drinks at a time. Nespresso’s own page says it is not dishwasher safe; you rinse it with warm water instead.
Nespresso also sells a larger Aeroccino XL whose listing says it holds 7.6 ounces of foam or 13.5 ounces of hot milk and is dishwasher resistant up to 158°F, if you need more room. We have not seen an ATK verdict on the XL.
Why we like it
- Recommended by ATK for cold foam
- Three modes at one button
- Automatic shut-off
- Small footprint
Key specifications
| Frother | Nespresso Aeroccino 3 |
|---|---|
| Type | Countertop jug, magnetic whisk |
| Capacity | 120 ml foam / 240 ml hot milk (Nespresso) |
| Hot/cold foam | Hot foam, hot milk, cold foam |
| Power | Not stated in listing |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | None; Nespresso says not dishwasher safe |
| Warranty | 2 years (Nespresso) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you drink iced coffee often and want cold foam with no fuss, for one or two cups.
Skip it if you want to put the jug in the dishwasher or make several drinks at once.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Good cold foam, per ATK
- Very simple to use
- Two-year warranty
Cons
- Small capacity
- Hand-wash only
5. Subminimal NanoFoamer Lithium – Microfoam From a Handheld

Most wands make stiff, bubbly foam. The Subminimal NanoFoamer is built for something closer to the silky microfoam an espresso machine’s steam wand makes, the kind you need to pour a heart on a latte. It does that with a small impeller under a clip-on mesh screen, which Subminimal calls NanoScreen technology.
The listing says you churn warm milk for about 30 seconds, and that the Lithium version claims 300 percent more power than conventional handheld frothers. It has two speeds, a battery level indicator, USB-C charging, a stainless steel shaft and IP4 water resistance, so you can rinse it under the tap. Pop off the screen and it becomes a plain mixer for protein shakes or matcha.
Like any wand, it does not heat milk; warm it first on the stove or in the microwave. ATK did not include it in its review, so the performance claims here are Subminimal’s.
Why we like it
- Designed for pourable microfoam
- USB-C rechargeable, two speeds
- Removable screen for plain mixing
- Rinses clean under the tap (IP4)
Key specifications
| Frother | Subminimal NanoFoamer Lithium (NF-03-LI) |
|---|---|
| Type | Handheld rechargeable wand |
| Capacity | Your mug or jug |
| Hot/cold foam | Microfoams milk you warm first; cold not stated |
| Power | Lithium-ion battery, USB-C |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | Not stated; rinse under running water |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you brew espresso or strong moka coffee at home and want to practice latte art without a steam wand.
Skip it if you just want foam on hot chocolate; a cheaper wand does that fine.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Finer foam than a coil whisk, per Subminimal
- No batteries to buy
- Compact
Cons
- Costs more than other wands
- Not in ATK’s review

6. Bodum Bistro Electric Milk Frother – No-Frills Countertop Jug

ATK rated the Bodum Bistro Electric Milk Frother (model 11870-01US, the same as this listing) Recommended and called it a “no-frills milk frother [that] gets the job done.” It is a compact stainless jug with a nonstick interior, a clear Tritan lid so you can watch the foam rise, and cord storage in the removable base.
The listing says it heats one cup (300 ml) of milk at a time and turns off automatically when it is finished. It does not list separate foam programs or a cold setting, so think of it as a one-button hot frother. Bodum covers it with a two-year warranty.
For a single café con leche each morning it is plenty, and it costs less than the Breville. The trade-off is fewer options than the Instant or the Aeroccino.
Why we like it
- Recommended by ATK (same model)
- Clear lid to watch the foam
- Auto shut-off
- Two-year warranty
Key specifications
| Frother | Bodum Bistro Electric (11870-01US) |
|---|---|
| Type | Countertop jug |
| Capacity | 300 ml (10 oz) of milk |
| Hot/cold foam | Hot; cold setting not stated |
| Power | Not stated in listing |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | Not stated |
| Warranty | 2 years |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want a basic hot frother from an established maker and don’t care about cold foam.
Skip it if you make iced drinks; the listing does not mention a cold setting.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Simple one-button use
- Small footprint with cord storage
- Longer warranty than most
Cons
- No cold foam listed
- One cup at a time
7. Aerolatte Steam-Free Milk Frother – The Original Wand

Aerolatte calls this its original steam-free frother, and ATK rated the Aerolatte Original (model 005, the same number as this satin-finish listing) Recommended, saying it “produced the rich, luxurious hot foam we were looking for.”
It works like the Zulay: a battery-powered 18/8 stainless steel whisk on a plastic handle. Aerolatte says you hold the button with the whisk in a mug of milk for about 30 to 60 seconds until the foam is as thick as you like, and that it works with whole, skim and goat milk as well as hemp, almond, soy and cashew milks. The listing says the materials are lead, cadmium, phthalate and BPA free, and that batteries are included, with a two-year warranty.
Hand wash the whisk end in warm, soapy water, per Aerolatte. It costs a little more than the Zulay; ATK put the Zulay ahead.
Why we like it
- Recommended by ATK for hot foam
- Batteries included
- Works with dairy and plant milks, per Aerolatte
- Two-year warranty
Key specifications
| Frother | Aerolatte Original Steam-Free (005), satin |
|---|---|
| Type | Handheld battery wand |
| Capacity | Your mug or jug |
| Hot/cold foam | Froths warm or cold milk; does not heat |
| Power | Batteries (included) |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | None stated; hand wash the whisk |
| Warranty | 2 years |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want a proven wand with a longer warranty than most.
Skip it if price matters most; ATK’s handheld winner costs less.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Rich hot foam, per ATK
- Compact enough to travel
- Stated materials list
Cons
- Does not heat milk
- No stand with this version
8. Bodum Latteo Manual Milk Frother – No Batteries, No Plug

The Bodum Latteo is a glass carafe with a mesh plunger, like a small French press for milk. Bodum says you pump the plunger up and down 60 to 90 times, or until you feel the milk thicken, and that it makes airy foam in under 30 seconds. The carafe is heat-resistant borosilicate glass, holds 8 ounces of cold milk, and the listing says it is dishwasher safe.
Bodum’s suggestion is to froth cold milk and then warm the foam in the microwave in the glass carafe. You can also froth milk you have already heated.
We include it honestly: ATK rated this exact model (1446-01US4) Recommended with Reservations, saying it “managed to serve up pleasant hot and cold foam—but it was a pain to use,” and ATK advises against manual frothers overall. It earns a place for kitchens without spare outlets, for camping, and for cooks who like a tool with nothing to break. If you want a hand tool for hot chocolate, a wooden molinillo is the traditional choice.
Why we like it
- No motor, batteries or cord
- Borosilicate glass carafe
- Dishwasher safe, per Bodum
- Hot and cold foam, per ATK
Key specifications
| Frother | Bodum Latteo (1446-01US4) |
|---|---|
| Type | Manual pump in a glass carafe |
| Capacity | 8 oz of cold milk |
| Hot/cold foam | Cold foam; warm it in the microwave after |
| Power | None (manual) |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | Whole frother |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want foam without electricity and don’t mind some pumping.
Skip it if you froth every day; ATK found it tiring, and any electric pick here is easier.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Nothing to charge
- Goes in the dishwasher
- Glass lets you see the foam
Cons
- “A pain to use,” per ATK
- Glass can break if dropped
How to choose a milk frother
Start with how many drinks you make at once and whether you want the frother to heat the milk.
1. Handheld, countertop or manual
Handheld wands are cheap and tiny but only whip air in; you heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave. Countertop jugs heat and froth in one step and switch off when they’re done. Manual pumps need no power but take effort. ATK’s advice matches ours: a wand if you’re happy to heat milk yourself, a jug if you want it automatic.
2. Capacity
Most jugs foam far less than they heat. The Aeroccino 3 foams about 4 ounces, the Instant and Bodum Bistro about 10, and the Breville up to three cups. For a pot of hot chocolate for four, only the Breville comes close; otherwise heat the milk in a saucepan and use a wand.

3. Hot and cold foam
If you drink iced coffee, choose a jug with a cold setting: the Instant and the Aeroccino 3 both list one, and ATK praised the Aeroccino’s cold foam. Wands froth cold milk too, but the foam is looser.
4. Cleaning
Milk sticks, so cleaning matters more than any feature. The Breville jug goes in the dishwasher; the Aeroccino and Instant jug do not. Wands just need a quick spin in hot water. Whatever you buy, rinse it right after use, before the milk dries.
5. Mexican hot chocolate
Mexican chocolate tablets are coarse with sugar and cinnamon, and they don’t dissolve as easily as cocoa powder. Melt the chocolate in hot milk in a pan first, then froth; a jug with a measuring cap like the Breville lets you add grated chocolate while it mixes. Our guide to the best Mexican hot chocolate compares the brands.
How we picked these eight milk frothers
We looked at handheld, countertop and manual frothers from established makers, sold on Amazon in the United States and in stock when we checked. Capacities, functions, power and care come from each Amazon listing and, where named, from Breville, Instant and Nespresso’s own product pages; where a figure was missing we wrote “Not stated.”
For performance we relied on America’s Test Kitchen’s milk frother review, which covered thirteen frothers. We left out the Secura frother because ATK found that the Secura model it reviewed scalded milk. We also searched the CPSC recall database for these brands’ frothers; the only frother recall we found was a promotional CocoaVia wand from 2015, not any model here. We have not used these frothers ourselves, and we did not read Wirecutter, Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping or Serious Eats for this guide, so we do not quote them.
Milk frother questions, answered
What kind of milk frother is best?
For most people, a countertop jug, because it heats and froths in one step and shuts off by itself. A handheld wand is the best kind if you have little space or money and don’t mind heating milk first.
What is the best milk frother brand?
In ATK’s review, Breville and Instant made the top countertop frothers, Zulay the top handheld, and Nespresso, Bodum and Aerolatte were all Recommended. Subminimal is known for microfoam wands but was not in that review.
What milk frother does America’s Test Kitchen recommend?
ATK names the Breville Milk Café its countertop winner, the Instant Milk Frother its countertop Best Buy and the Zulay Kitchen Milk Boss its handheld winner, all Highly Recommended.
Which milk froths best?
Fuller-fat milk generally foams more richly; Secura’s listing, for example, recommends whole milk above 3 percent fat for the best results. ATK found the Instant made good cappuccino foam from both whole milk and almond milk, so plant milks can work; barista versions are made for it.
Can a milk frother make Mexican hot chocolate?
Yes, if you dissolve the chocolate first. Heat milk with chopped Mexican chocolate in a pan, then froth it with a wand, or pour the warm chocolate milk into a jug frother whose maker allows it. The molinillo does the same job by hand.
Our final pick for foamy milk at home
Buy the Breville Milk Café if you make milky drinks for the household and want to set the temperature, or the Instant Milk Frother for push-button hot and cold foam at a lower price. Choose the Zulay Milk Boss for a cheap, proven wand, the Nespresso Aeroccino 3 for iced coffee with cold foam, and the Subminimal NanoFoamer if you want to pour latte art.

More coffee gear we’ve covered: coffee makers, coffee grinders, espresso machines, single-serve coffee makers, pour-over drippers, cold brew makers, coffee mugs, espresso grinders, travel mugs.
