Serveware, Dinnerware & Table

18/10 or 18/0? How to Pick the Best Flatware Sets

Nine flatware sets from Oneida, Liberty Tabletop, Zwilling, Mikasa, Fortessa and Towle: 18/10 vs 18/0 steel, serving pieces, finishes and warranties.

Rows of stainless forks laid out beside a stack of plates.

Flatware is the part of the table nobody notices until it goes wrong: a fork that bends in a stack of enchiladas, a knife that skids across carne asada, spoons that come out of the dishwasher spotted with rust. A restaurant replaces cheap flatware constantly, and a home kitchen that buys the right set once can use it for decades.

This guide names nine flatware sets worth buying, from Oneida, Liberty Tabletop, Zwilling, Mikasa, Fortessa and Towle, in 18/10 and 18/0 stainless, mirror, satin, gold and black. It explains what those steel numbers mean, which sets come with serving pieces, which one is made in the United States, and how to keep stainless from spotting.

Quick verdict: which flatware set to buy

For most homes, the best flatware set is the Oneida Moda 65-Piece 18/10 Set: twelve five-piece place settings plus five serving pieces in a clean, simple shape, made of 18/10 stainless for rust resistance and backed by a limited lifetime warranty, according to the listing. If you want flatware made in the United States, choose the Liberty Tabletop Satin Annapolis 45-Piece Set, made in Sherrill, New York, with forged knives and a 25-year warranty. On a tighter budget, the Oneida Flight 45-Piece 18/0 Set serves eight with serving pieces and a 25-year full warranty.

Our picks for the best flatware sets

These nine sets cover the choices that matter: 18/10 or 18/0 steel, service for four, eight or twelve, with or without serving pieces, and mirror, satin, gold or black finishes. Each pick explains who it suits and one honest reason to skip it.

1. Oneida Moda 65-Piece 18/10 Set – Service for Twelve, Serving Pieces Included

Best overallOneida Moda 65-Piece 18/10 Silverware Set for 12

Oneida’s Moda is a plain, symmetrical shape that works with any plate, in a set big enough for a holiday table. The 65 pieces make twelve five-piece place settings, each with a dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, dinner spoon and teaspoon, plus a five-piece serving set: a serving spoon, a pierced serving spoon, a serving fork, a sugar spoon and a butter knife.

The serving pieces earn their keep at a family dinner. The pierced spoon lifts beans or calabacitas out of their liquid, the serving fork handles a platter of carnitas, and the butter knife goes with a basket of bolillos. With twelve settings, a family of four can run the dishwasher every other day and still have clean forks.

The set is 18/10 stainless steel, which Oneida says gives increased durability and rust resistance, polished to a mirror finish. It is dishwasher safe, and the listing gives a limited lifetime warranty. Oneida does not state the weight or country of manufacture.

Why we like it

  • Twelve full five-piece place settings
  • Five serving pieces included
  • 18/10 stainless for rust resistance, per Oneida
  • Simple shape that suits any dinnerware
  • Limited lifetime warranty, according to the listing

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you want to buy flatware once: enough place settings for a crowd, the serving pieces you would otherwise buy separately, and a steel grade that holds up to the dishwasher.

Skip it if you have a small household or a small drawer. Sixty-five pieces is a lot to store, and a set for four or eight would cost less.

2. Liberty Tabletop Satin Annapolis 45-Piece Set – Made in Sherrill, New York

Best made in USALiberty Tabletop Satin Annapolis 45 Piece Flatware set for 8 Made in USA

Liberty Tabletop’s case is where it is made. Its own site describes it as a division of Sherrill Manufacturing, “the only manufacturer of stainless steel flatware in the United States,” with every piece made in Sherrill, New York, from stainless steel that it requires to be melted in the United States.

The Annapolis pattern is a simple teardrop shape, and this version has a brushed satin finish rather than mirror polish. The 45-piece set serves eight, each with a dinner fork, dinner knife, place spoon, teaspoon and salad fork, plus five serving pieces: a serving spoon, slotted spoon, butter knife, sugar spoon and cold meat fork. Liberty says the pieces are Euro-sized with “excellent balance and weight,” and that the dinner knives are forged for durability and performance.

All Liberty flatware is 18/10 stainless and dishwasher safe, and the listing claims that because of the steel grade it “will never rust.” That is a bold promise; any stainless can spot if it sits wet with salty food, so dry it promptly. Liberty backs the set with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Why we like it

  • Made in Sherrill, New York, from US-melted steel, per Liberty
  • 18/10 stainless throughout
  • Forged dinner knives
  • Euro-sized pieces Liberty describes as well balanced
  • 25-year manufacturer’s warranty

3. Oneida Flight 45-Piece 18/0 Set – Light, Mid-Century and Well Warranted

Budget pickOneida Flatware Flight 18/0 Silverware Set for 8

Not every table needs 18/10. Oneida’s Flight set is 18/0 stainless, the nickel-free grade common in everyday flatware, and it is shaped with the flowing, sculptural lines of 1950s design. The 45 pieces serve eight with a dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, dinner spoon and teaspoon each, plus the same five serving pieces as the Moda set.

Oneida describes Flight as light-weight. That suits children and anyone who finds heavy flatware tiring, but it will feel less substantial than 18/10 sets in the hand. The bigger trade-off is care. Oneida’s listing is unusually specific: do not soak the pieces, clean them before they go in the dishwasher, avoid contact with salt water, and rinse soon after contact with acidic or salty foods, which can cause discoloration and corrosion. In a Mexican kitchen, that means rinsing forks after lime, salsa and pickled jalapeños rather than leaving them overnight.

Look after it that way and the warranty is generous: the listing gives a 25-year full warranty. It is dishwasher safe.

Why we like it

  • Service for eight plus five serving pieces
  • Light-weight, per Oneida
  • Distinctive mid-century shape
  • 25-year full warranty, according to the listing

Why we recommend it

Choose it for an everyday set that serves eight with serving pieces at a lower cost than 18/10, or as a second set for parties and the patio.

Skip it if your household leaves dishes to soak or never rinses before loading. 18/0 steel is less forgiving of salt, acid and standing water, and Oneida’s care rules say so.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Serving pieces included
  • Light and easy to handle
  • 25-year full warranty

Cons

  • 18/0 needs more careful rinsing
  • Feels light next to 18/10
  • Finish not described

4. Zwilling Cult 68-Piece 18/10 Set – Forged Knives, Service for Twelve

Best forged knivesCutlery set 68-piece

Zwilling is better known for kitchen knives, and that shows in the table knife. The Cult set’s knives are made of forged blade steel with a fine serrated edge, according to the listing, and the handles have a rounded, ergonomic shape. If your family eats a lot of carne asada, chuletas or milanesa at the table, that knife matters more than the forks.

The 68 pieces serve up to twelve, laid out the European way: twelve each of tablespoons, forks, knives, coffee spoons and cake forks, then eight serving pieces, namely a soup ladle, two meat forks, a sauce spoon, a cake server, a sugar spoon and two serving spoons. There is no separate salad fork; the cake fork does that job at a smaller size. The finish is matte (Zwilling calls it frosted), so it shows fingerprints less than mirror steel.

The steel is 18/10 stainless, described as scratch-resistant, rustproof and corrosion-resistant, and the set is dishwasher safe, per the listing. The listing does not state a warranty, the weight of the set or where it is made. For steak night, a dedicated set of steak knives still cuts better than any table knife.

Why we like it

  • Knives of forged blade steel with a fine serrated edge
  • Service for twelve plus eight serving pieces
  • Soup ladle and sauce spoon included
  • 18/10 stainless, dishwasher safe
  • Matte finish that hides fingerprints better than mirror

5. Mikasa Satin Loft 65-Piece 18/10 Set – Satin Finish That Hides Fingerprints

Best satin finishMikasa Satin Loft 65 Piece Flatware Set Service for 12 Stainless Steel

Mirror-polished flatware looks sharp on day one and shows every fingerprint and water spot after. A satin finish has a soft, brushed sheen instead, and Mikasa says it resists fingerprints. Mikasa’s Satin Loft does that across a full service for twelve, with flat, modern handles and smooth edges.

The 65 pieces give twelve people a dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, dinner spoon and teaspoon, plus five serving utensils. Mikasa lists the steel as 18/10, with the higher nickel content for rust and corrosion resistance, and describes the pieces as thoughtfully weighted for a comfortable grip. It is dishwasher safe and, Mikasa says, needs no polishing.

Mikasa’s own care guide has good advice for any stainless: remove flatware from the dishwasher soon after the drying cycle, and limit contact with hard water, high-chloride detergents and chloride-rich foods such as table salt, mustard, mayonnaise and eggs, which can cause pitting and spotting. The listing does not state a warranty.

Why we like it

  • Satin finish that resists fingerprints, per Mikasa
  • Service for twelve plus five serving pieces
  • 18/10 stainless
  • Flat, modern handles

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

Choose it for a large household that wants flatware to look clean between washes, or for a modern table where mirror polish feels too formal.

Pros

  • Hides fingerprints
  • Service for twelve
  • Serving pieces included

Cons

  • No stated warranty

6. Fortessa Doria 20-Piece 18/10 Set – Fluted Handles from a Restaurant Supplier

Best restaurant-grade makerFORTESSA Doria 18/10 Stainless Steel Flatware

Fortessa makes dinnerware, glassware and flatware, and its listing describes the range as made “for culinary professionals and at-home chefs.” The Doria pattern has fluted lines inspired by columns running down the handle, polished to a shine, a classic look that gives the hand some texture.

This is a 20-piece set for four, and the pieces are laid out the way a restaurant sets a table: each person gets a table fork, a salad or dessert fork, a table knife, a dessert or soup spoon, and a coffee spoon or teaspoon. Buy two or three sets for a bigger table. Fortessa sells some of its patterns as single five-piece place settings too, which makes a lost fork easier to replace.

The steel is 18/10, which Fortessa says gives greater resistance to stains and rust, and the title lists it as dishwasher safe. Fortessa does not state a weight, a warranty or the country of manufacture on this listing.

Why we like it

  • From a maker that supplies professional kitchens
  • 18/10 stainless, polished
  • Textured fluted handles
  • Same 18/10 grade Fortessa uses across its flatware patterns

7. Oneida Moda Gold Satin 20-Piece 18/10 Set – Gold Tone in a Simple Shape

Best goldOneida Moda Gold Satin 20-Piece 18/10 Silverware Set for 4

Gold flatware looks warm against cream stoneware and dark wood, and it suits a holiday or posada table set with candles. Oneida’s Moda Gold Satin is the same clean Moda shape as our top pick, finished in a gold satin rather than mirror steel, so it reads modern rather than ornate.

The set is service for four, with a dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, dinner spoon and teaspoon each. Oneida lists the base metal as 18/10 stainless for durability and rust resistance and says the set is dishwasher safe. It does not say how the gold color is applied.

That matters for care. Colored flatware is usually coated, and Mikasa’s care guide recommends washing gold-toned and other PVD-coated finishes separately by hand. Oneida’s listing says dishwasher safe, but hand washing is the cautious way to keep any colored finish looking new. If you want gold for everyday use in a busy kitchen, plain stainless is less fuss.

Why we like it

  • Gold satin finish in a clean, modern shape
  • 18/10 stainless base, per Oneida
  • Pairs with the plain Moda set for mixed tables
  • Dishwasher safe, according to the listing

Key specifications

  • Warm gold satin look
  • 18/10 base metal
  • Simple, modern shape

8. Oneida Chef’s Table Midnight 20-Piece Set – Black Flatware Designed for Casual Restaurants

Best blackOneida Chefs Table Midnight Matte 20-Piece Silverware Set for 4

Black flatware is striking on white plates and natural linen, and Oneida designed its Chef’s Table line, the listing says, “for casual restaurants and everyday home meals.” This Midnight set serves four with a dinner knife, dinner fork, salad fork, dinner spoon and teaspoon each.

The base is 18/0 stainless, which Oneida says is durable and provides rust protection, and the listing describes the pieces as heavy in the hand and dishwasher safe, with a limited lifetime warranty. There is one inconsistency: the product name says “Midnight Matte,” while the description calls the pattern “mirror finished.” Look at the listing photos to judge the finish yourself.

As with gold, black flatware gets its color from a finish over the steel, and Mikasa’s care guide recommends hand washing black matte and other PVD finishes. Oneida stands behind dishwasher use with its warranty, but a gentle wash keeps black looking black.

Why we like it

  • Designed for casual restaurants as well as homes, per Oneida
  • Heavy in the hand
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Dishwasher safe, according to the listing

Key specifications

Set Chef’s Table Midnight 20-piece (model B1022020AL20)

Finish Black (“Midnight Matte” in the name; “mirror finished” in the description)
Weight (stated) Described as heavy; no figure
Dishwasher-safe Yes (listing)

Why we recommend it

Choose it for a modern table, white or pale dinnerware, or a gift for someone who has plain steel already.

Skip it if you want certainty about the finish; the listing contradicts itself between matte and mirror.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Striking black color
  • Restaurant-oriented design
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Finish description is inconsistent
  • 18/0 base
  • Colored finish needs gentle care

9. Towle Everyday Pueblo 20-Piece Set – A Southwestern Pattern That Never Needs Polishing

Most distinctive patternTowle Everyday Pueblo 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set

Most flatware is plain on purpose. Towle’s Everyday Pueblo is the exception, with a pattern Towle calls Southwestern worked into the handles, and it suits a table set with Talavera-style serving bowls, woven placemats and a stack of warm tortillas in the middle.

The set serves four, with a salad fork, dinner fork, dinner knife, dinner spoon and teaspoon each. Towle lists the steel as 18/0 stainless, says the pieces are dishwasher safe and never need polishing, and backs it with a lifetime limited warranty. The listing is brief and gives no weight, finish description or country of origin.

Because it is 18/0, follow the same habits as the Oneida Flight: rinse after salty or acidic food and dry it rather than leaving it in a wet dish rack overnight.

Why we like it

  • Southwestern pattern on the handles
  • Dishwasher safe, never needs polishing, per Towle
  • Lifetime limited warranty

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you want flatware with character for a casual, Southwestern-style table, or a set for a cabin or patio.

Skip it if you want detailed specs: Towle’s listing is short on them, and the pattern will not suit a formal table.

Pros and cons

How to choose a flatware set

Five things separate a set you will use for decades from one that rusts or bends.

1. 18/10 or 18/0 steel

The numbers are the chromium and nickel content. Pfaltzgraff’s flatware guide explains that the 18 means 18% chromium, which is what makes the steel stainless, and the second number is nickel: “The higher the nickel content, the brighter the polish.” 18/0 has no nickel, so it is less forgiving of salt, acid and standing water, but it is a sound everyday choice if you rinse promptly; Pfaltzgraff suggests it for a more casual look.

2. Place settings and serving pieces

A standard place setting is five pieces: dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, dinner spoon and teaspoon. Buy at least two settings per person in your household, more if you run the dishwasher less than daily. Sets with a five-piece serving set (Oneida Moda and Flight, Mikasa), or the eight serving pieces in Zwilling’s Cult set, save buying a serving spoon, slotted spoon and meat fork separately.

3. Forged or stamped knives

Pfaltzgraff describes forging as the traditional way of making flatware, giving well-formed pattern definition on both the front and back of the handle. Liberty and Zwilling both state forged knives: Liberty says its forged dinner knives add durability and performance, and Zwilling’s Cult listing says its knives are made of forged blade steel with a fine serrated edge. That matters for grilled meat.

A knife and fork resting on a green patterned plate set on a larger white plate
A knife and fork resting on a patterned plate.

4. Finish

Mirror polish looks formal and shows fingerprints; satin hides them. Gold and black finishes add color but are a coating, and Mikasa’s care guide recommends hand washing PVD finishes such as gold and black matte.

5. Size and weight

Liberty describes its pieces as Euro sized, larger than standard American flatware. Few makers publish weights, so if heft matters, look for words like “Euro-sized” or “heavy” in the listing.

Keeping stainless flatware from spotting

Stainless resists rust; it does not ignore it. Mikasa’s guide lists the usual causes: hard water, high-chloride detergents, and foods containing chloride such as table salt, mustard, mayonnaise and eggs, which can cause pitting and spotting if left on the steel. Oneida adds acidic foods. In a Mexican kitchen, that is lime, salsa, pickled jalapeños and salted rims, so rinse forks and spoons soon after the meal. Do not soak flatware overnight, take it out of the dishwasher soon after the drying cycle, and dry it on a towel or a dish drying mat if it comes out wet. If spots appear, Mikasa recommends a non-abrasive stainless polish rather than a gritty cleanser.

How we chose these nine flatware sets

We started from what a restaurant needs from flatware: steel that survives daily dishwashing, knives that cut, enough settings to keep a table going, and a maker that stands behind it. We then looked at sets in stock on Amazon in the United States from established makers and checked each listing for steel grade, piece count, finish, care instructions, warranty and origin, and the makers’ own sites where available, including Liberty Tabletop’s FAQ and the flatware care sections of Pfaltzgraff’s and Mikasa’s FAQs. We chose nine to cover 18/10 and 18/0, service for four to twelve, and four finishes, and left out unbranded sets from sellers that publish no maker details. These picks are not based on our own use of the sets; where we describe how steel behaves, we say whose guidance that is.

Flatware is one piece of a table. Our guide to taco bar supplies covers the serving side of taco night, and taco holders keep shells upright on the plate.

Flatware questions, answered

What is the best flatware set for everyday use?

An 18/10 stainless set with at least two place settings per person, such as the Oneida Moda 65-piece set. If you prefer to spend less and will rinse after meals, the 18/0 Oneida Flight set is a good everyday choice with a 25-year full warranty.

Is 18/10 flatware worth it over 18/0?

For most homes, yes. The nickel in 18/10 adds corrosion resistance and shine, according to Pfaltzgraff, which matters if flatware sits in the dishwasher or the sink. 18/0 is fine if you rinse promptly and dry it.

What are the best flatware set brands?

Oneida for range and warranties, Liberty Tabletop for made-in-USA flatware, Zwilling for forged knives, Mikasa for satin finishes, Fortessa for restaurant-style patterns, and Towle for something different.

Is gold or black flatware dishwasher safe?

Some makers say yes; Oneida lists both its gold and black sets as dishwasher safe. Mikasa recommends hand washing gold and black PVD finishes, which is the safer way to keep the color even.

Is any flatware still made in the USA?

Yes. Liberty Tabletop says it is the only manufacturer of stainless steel flatware in the United States, making every piece in Sherrill, New York.

Our final pick for the table

Buy the Oneida Moda 65-piece set if you want one 18/10 set that seats twelve with serving pieces and a limited lifetime warranty. Choose Liberty Tabletop if made in America matters, Zwilling for the best table knife, and Oneida Flight to save money. Whatever you buy, rinse after salsa and lime, and do not let it soak.
