Before You Buy the Best Flush Mount Range Hood

Range hood inserts that mount flush inside a wood or custom hood, from Broan-NuTone, Zephyr, ZLINE and Cosmo, with airflow and noise as makers state them.

A white custom range hood built between cream cabinets above a stainless pro-style gas range
A custom hood like this hides its ventilation insert inside the shell.

A wood hood over the range, a plaster canopy, a run of cabinets with nothing showing but a clean underside: that look depends on a range hood insert. Also called a power pack or built-in liner, it is the motor, filters and lights in a steel box that mounts flush inside a custom enclosure, so the hood you see is cabinetry, not stainless steel.

Choosing one is mostly a fit-and-airflow job. This guide covers seven inserts from Broan-NuTone, Zephyr, ZLINE and Cosmo, from a 21-inch power pack that hides in a standard cabinet to a 46-inch insert for a wide range, with airflow and noise only as each maker states them.

Quick verdict: which hood insert to buy

For most custom hoods over a 30-inch range, the best flush mount range hood is the Broan-NuTone 21-Inch Power Pack Insert (PM400SS): 450 CFM at the top, 1 sone at its normal speed per Broan-NuTone, Energy Star certification and clips that let one person install it. For a 36-inch wood hood, choose the Zephyr 36-Inch Monsoon I Insert; for the most airflow, the ZLINE 34-Inch Range Hood Insert at 700 CFM.

Below, the five standouts side by side, then all seven in full.

What a flush mount insert is, and what it is not

A finished range hood has two parts: the shell you see and the ventilation inside it. An under-cabinet or chimney hood sells both together in stainless steel. An insert sells only the working part. A cabinetmaker or contractor builds the shell from wood, plaster or metal, and the insert bolts into its underside so its bottom sits flush with the enclosure.

That gives you three practical sizes to think about. Power packs, like the 21-inch Broan-NuTone units, are small and hide in an ordinary 30 or 36-inch cabinet or hood; the cabinet itself becomes the capture area. Liner-width inserts, like the 30-inch Broan-NuTone and Cosmo, fill most of the hood’s footprint. Wide inserts, like ZLINE’s 34 and 46-inch models, are built for large custom hoods over pro-style ranges.

Almost every insert here is meant to vent outside through a duct. If your kitchen cannot run one, read our guide to the best non-vented range hood first. If you simply want a hood without building an enclosure, our main best under-cabinet range hood guide is the better starting point; none of its picks are repeated here, because they are complete hoods, not inserts. Hoods that hang on an open wall are in our best wall-mount range hood guide.

Our picks for the best flush mount range hood

These seven cover the common builds: a power pack in a standard cabinet, a liner-width insert for a 30-inch hood, inserts for 36 and 48-inch ranges, baffles at a lower airflow and a smart power pack.

1. Broan-NuTone 21-Inch Power Pack Insert – Quiet at Normal Speed

Best overallBroan- NuTone PM400SS Custom Cabinet Built-in 3-Speed Power Pack Insert with LED Lighting and 450 Max Blower CFM

The PM400SS is the classic way to put ventilation inside a cabinet or a wood hood. The power pack itself is 21 inches wide, and Broan-NuTone says its stainless liner extension fits cabinets up to 13 inches deep, with optional extensions for cabinets up to 15 inches deep. Broan-NuTone also lists optional stainless liners, LB30SS and LB36SS, to finish the inside of a 30 or 36-inch hood.

The three-speed blower is rated at 450 maximum blower CFM. Broan-NuTone lists 1 sone at its normal speed, which the listing compares to a refrigerator, and the insert is Energy Star certified. A rotary knob runs the fan; an ADA-compliant wall control is sold separately. The aluminum mesh micro filters go in the dishwasher.

Broan-NuTone’s EZ1 clips are designed so one person can hang the insert. The spec sheet calls for 6-inch round or 3¼ by 10-inch duct and a mounting height of 24 to 30 inches above the cooktop. A non-ducted kit is sold separately if you ever need it.

Why we like it

  • 450 max blower CFM from a 21-inch unit, per Broan-NuTone
  • 1 sone at normal speed, per Broan-NuTone
  • Energy Star certified, per the listing
  • Dishwasher-safe aluminum mesh filters

Key specifications

Model PM400SS
Width 21 in.
Max airflow 450 CFM (max blower)
Fan speeds 3
Noise (stated) 1 sone at normal speed
Filters Aluminum mesh, dishwasher safe
Ducting 6 in. round or 3¼ x 10 in.
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits most custom hoods and cabinet builds over a standard 30-inch range, for a cook who wants a quiet everyday setting and enough top speed for searing.

Skip it if you cook on a 36-inch or wider pro range with high-output burners; a wider insert with more airflow covers the outer burners better.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fits inside an ordinary cabinet
  • Quiet low setting
  • One-person installation clips

Cons

  • Mesh filters, not baffles
  • Liners and wall control cost extra
  • One-year warranty

2. Broan-NuTone 30-Inch Custom Built Insert – Simple Liner-Width Fit

Budget pickBroan Nu-Tone Broan-NuTone BBN1303SS Custom Built Insert with 2-Speed Exhaust Fan and Light

The BBN1303SS is Broan-NuTone’s plain, liner-width option: a 30-inch stainless power pack for a hood built over a 30-inch range. Because it fills more of the hood’s footprint than a 21-inch unit, it reaches the outer burners without a separate liner.

It is a modest performer by design. The two-speed blower is rated at 300 maximum blower CFM, controlled with a rocker switch, and Broan-NuTone lists 3 sones, which the listing compares to a typical conversation. LED lighting covers the cooktop, and the same EZ1 clips and liner extension fit cabinets up to 13 inches deep, or 15 inches with extensions.

That is enough for everyday cooking on an electric or standard gas range: a pot of beans, sautéed onions, a weeknight skillet. It is less suited to heavy searing or deep frying, where more airflow helps.

Why we like it

  • 30-inch width covers a standard range
  • Same one-person EZ1 clips as the PM series
  • Simple two-speed rocker control
  • LED lighting, per the listing

Key specifications

Model BBN1303SS
Width 30 in.
Max airflow 300 CFM (max blower)
Fan speeds 2
Noise (stated) 3 sones
Filters Not stated
Ducting Not stated
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits a 30-inch custom hood over an electric or standard gas range in a kitchen that cooks moderately and wants the simplest install.

Skip it if you sear, fry or char chiles often; 300 CFM is the lowest airflow on this page.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Full 30-inch footprint
  • Easy installation system
  • Straightforward controls

Cons

  • Lowest airflow here
  • Louder than the PM400SS at 3 sones
  • Filter type not stated in the listing

3. Zephyr 36-Inch Monsoon I Insert – Six Speeds and Baffles

Best for 36-inch hoodsZephyr 36 inch Built In/Insert Range Hood Essentials Power Monsoon I 600CFM

Zephyr’s Monsoon I is a one-piece insert for a 36-inch custom hood. The listing gives 600 CFM across six fan speeds; Zephyr’s own spec sheet for this CS version lists a 200 to 650 CFM blower range and 1 to 7 sones from lowest to highest speed.

Its most useful feature for a remodel is Airflow Control Technology. Zephyr says it lets the installer cap the maximum CFM to meet local code, which matters because many codes require make-up air above a certain airflow. Electronic touch controls run the fan and the LED lights, and there is an auto delay-off so the fan keeps clearing the air after you finish.

Grease goes into dishwasher-safe baffle filters, which handle the heavy spatter from carne asada or a pan of frying tortilla strips better than thin mesh. The LumiLight LEDs adjust from 2700K to 5000K so the light can match the rest of the kitchen. Zephyr’s manual calls for 8-inch round duct at full airflow; an optional wireless remote is sold separately.

Why we like it

  • Six speeds up to 600 CFM, per the listing
  • Installer-set airflow cap for code compliance
  • Dishwasher-safe baffle filters
  • Three years parts, one year labor

Key specifications

Model AK9234CS
Width 36 in.
Max airflow 600 CFM (listing); 650 CFM (Zephyr spec sheet)
Fan speeds 6
Noise (stated) 1 to 7 sones
Filters Baffle, dishwasher safe
Ducting 8 in. round
Warranty 3 years parts, 1 year labor

Why we recommend it

It suits a 36-inch wood or plaster hood over a gas range in a kitchen that cooks with high heat, and an installer who needs to meet a make-up air rule.

Skip it if your duct is 6 inches; Zephyr’s manual ties the smaller duct to a reduced airflow setting on some versions, so check the manual for your exact model.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong top speed with fine control
  • Baffle filters for heavy grease
  • Adjustable light color

Cons

  • Up to 7 sones on high, per Zephyr
  • Needs large 8-inch duct at full airflow
  • Remote sold separately

4. ZLINE 34-Inch Range Hood Insert – 700 CFM for Big Burners

Most airflowZLINE 34" Ducted Wall Mount Range Hood Insert in Stainless Steel (698-34)

ZLINE designs the 698-34 to install into custom cabinetry with no visible shell, and it is the most powerful insert on this page. Four fan speeds run at 280, 420, 560 and 700 CFM, set with push buttons, and LED lights cover the cooktop.

The body is brushed 430-grade stainless steel, and the stainless baffle filters lift out for the dishwasher. ZLINE includes a transition piece for 8-inch round duct, and the insert needs a dedicated 120-volt, 15-amp circuit with a standard three-prong plug, so plan the electrical with your contractor.

ZLINE’s warranty is three years on parts plus a lifetime motor warranty, the longest motor coverage here. At 34 inches wide, it is a natural fit for a large hood over a 36-inch pro-style range; confirm the cutout against ZLINE’s installation sheet before the cabinetmaker builds the shell.

Why we like it

  • Four speeds up to 700 CFM, per ZLINE
  • Dishwasher-safe stainless baffle filters
  • 8-inch duct transition included
  • Lifetime motor warranty

Key specifications

Model 698-34
Width 34 in.
Max airflow 700 CFM
Fan speeds 4 (280/420/560/700 CFM)
Noise (stated) Not stated
Filters Stainless baffle, dishwasher safe
Ducting 8 in. round (transition included)
Warranty 3-year parts, lifetime motor

Why we recommend it

It suits a large custom hood over a 36-inch gas range in a kitchen that sears, stir-fries and roasts chiles over open flame.

Skip it if your home is tight or your local code requires make-up air above a certain airflow; 700 CFM may trigger that requirement, so ask your installer first.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Highest stated airflow here
  • Baffle filters
  • Long motor warranty

Cons

  • No noise figure in the listing
  • Needs a dedicated circuit
  • May require make-up air

5. Cosmo 30-Inch Lumin Insert – Baffles at a Lower Airflow

Best value with baffles30 in. Lumin Collection 380 CFM Ducted Insert Range Hood

Cosmo’s COS-30IRHP brings permanent baffle filters to a 30-inch build. Cosmo calls them ARC-FLOW filters and says they are dishwasher safe and never need replacing. The body is 430-grade, 26-gauge brushed stainless steel, measuring 27.8 by 11.5 by 11.4 inches, so it drops into a hood built for a 30-inch range.

The blower is rated at 380 CFM with three speeds on push buttons. Cosmo gives a noise figure as low as 45 dB on the lowest speed, with rigid ducting under optimal conditions. The duct collar is 5.9 inches round; Cosmo includes flexible duct for convenience, though rigid duct is what its noise figure assumes. A backdraft damper is part of the unit, per the listing title.

It plugs into a standard three-prong outlet, uses 1.5-watt LEDs and is ETL listed. The two-year limited warranty is longer than Broan-NuTone’s one year.

Why we like it

  • Permanent dishwasher-safe baffle filters, per Cosmo
  • As low as 45 dB on low, per Cosmo
  • Plug-in power cord
  • Two-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model COS-30IRHP
Width 30 in. class (27.8 in. body)
Max airflow 380 CFM
Fan speeds 3
Noise (stated) As low as 45 dB on low
Filters Permanent baffle, dishwasher safe
Ducting 5.9 in. round
Warranty 2-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits a 30-inch custom hood in a kitchen that wants easy-clean baffles and a quiet low speed without paying for a high-CFM insert.

Skip it if you need ductless operation; the listing describes it as a ducted insert.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Baffle filters
  • Stated low-speed noise figure
  • Longer warranty than Broan-NuTone

Cons

  • Ducted only, per the listing
  • Thin 26-gauge steel body
  • Noise figure assumes rigid duct

6. Broan-NuTone 21-Inch SmartSense Power Pack – Runs Itself

Best smart insertBroan NuTone® 21-Inch Custom Range Hood Power Pack Insert

The PM600SSV is Broan-NuTone’s automatic power pack. SmartSense adjusts the fan speed to the heat coming off the range and shuts the fan off on its own, so the hood is running when a pan starts smoking even if you forgot to switch it on. Voice control over Wi-Fi works with Alexa or Google Assistant.

The listing’s feature list gives 650 maximum blower CFM and calls it powerful enough for a gas range, though its size field says 600 CFM; treat the lower number as the safe figure. Code Ready Technology, per Broan-NuTone, lets the installer have the insert adjust its airflow to meet make-up air codes. It uses the same EZ1 installation system as the PM400SS.

This is the pick for a cook who wants the fan to manage itself. It carries more electronics than a simple rocker-switch power pack.

Why we like it

  • Automatic speed and shut-off by heat, per Broan-NuTone
  • Voice control through Alexa or Google Assistant
  • Airflow can be set to meet make-up air codes
  • One-person EZ1 installation

Key specifications

Model PM600SSV
Width 21 in.
Max airflow 600–650 CFM (listing gives both)
Fan speeds Automatic (SmartSense); count not stated
Noise (stated) Not stated
Filters Not stated
Ducting Not stated
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits a cabinet-hidden hood over a gas range in a busy kitchen where nobody remembers to turn the fan on.

Skip it if you want published noise and filter details before you buy; the listing gives neither.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Hands-free operation
  • High stated airflow for a 21-inch unit
  • Code-ready airflow adjustment

Cons

  • Listing gives two different CFM figures
  • No noise or filter details listed
  • Needs Wi-Fi for voice control

7. ZLINE 46-Inch Range Hood Insert – For a 48-Inch Range

Best for wide rangesZLINE 46" Ducted Wall Mount Range Hood Insert in Stainless Steel (695-46)

A 48-inch range with a griddle and six burners needs a hood shell and insert to match. ZLINE’s 695-46 is a 46-inch insert with the same working parts as the 34-inch model above: four speeds at 280, 420, 560 and 700 CFM, push-button controls, LED lights and dishwasher-safe stainless baffle filters.

ZLINE builds it in brushed 430-grade stainless steel, includes a transition for 8-inch round duct and calls for a dedicated 120-volt, 15-amp circuit. The warranty is three years on parts with a lifetime motor warranty.

Note that airflow does not grow with width: the 46-inch insert has the same 700 CFM top speed as the 34-inch one, spread across a larger capture area. On a wide range, a deep hood shell that holds smoke while the fan works matters as much as the number.

Why we like it

  • 46-inch width for wide ranges
  • Four speeds up to 700 CFM, per ZLINE
  • Dishwasher-safe stainless baffles
  • Lifetime motor warranty

Key specifications

Model 695-46
Width 46 in.
Max airflow 700 CFM
Fan speeds 4 (280/420/560/700 CFM)
Noise (stated) Not stated
Filters Stainless baffle, dishwasher safe
Ducting 8 in. round (transition included)
Warranty 3-year parts, lifetime motor

Why we recommend it

It suits a large custom hood over a 48-inch pro-style range, where a narrower insert would leave the outer burners uncovered.

Skip it if your range is 36 inches or narrower; the 34-inch ZLINE does the same job in a smaller shell.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Covers a wide cooktop
  • Baffle filters
  • Long motor warranty

Cons

  • Same 700 CFM as the 34-inch model
  • No noise figure listed
  • Dedicated circuit and likely make-up air

How to choose a range hood insert for a custom hood

Measure the shell before you buy the insert

Every maker publishes a cutout size and a depth range. A power pack sits inside a cabinet or hood; a liner-width insert needs a shell built around its exact dimensions. Get the insert’s installation sheet to your cabinetmaker before the shell is built, not after.

Cover the cooktop

The hood shell, not the insert, sets the capture area, and it should be at least as wide as the cooktop. A 21-inch power pack works in a 30 or 36-inch hood because the shell around it holds the smoke while the fan pulls. For a 48-inch range, a wide insert like ZLINE’s 46-inch model keeps the fan close to the outer burners.

Match airflow to your stove and your code

Stated airflow here runs from 300 to 700 CFM. More is better for high-output gas burners and searing, but many local codes require make-up air once a hood passes a set airflow, often 400 CFM. Zephyr and Broan-NuTone build airflow caps into some models for this reason; ask your installer what applies where you live.

A dark rectangular range hood mounted under wood paneling, seen from below
From below, a built-in hood shows only its underside.

Baffle or mesh filters

Stainless baffle filters, on the Zephyr Monsoon I, ZLINE and Cosmo inserts, handle heavy grease well and go in the dishwasher. Aluminum mesh, on the Broan-NuTone PM400SS, is lighter and also washable but clogs faster in a kitchen that fries often.

Plan the duct and the noise

Duct size ranges from 6-inch round on the power packs to 8-inch round on the big inserts. A smaller duct than the maker asks for cuts airflow and adds noise, and Zephyr warns that flexible duct can restrict airflow by up to half. Check stated sones or decibels where makers give them; Broan-NuTone lists 1 sone at normal speed on the PM400SS, the quietest figure here.

How we chose these seven hood inserts

We searched for range hood inserts and power packs designed to mount inside custom cabinetry or hood shells, from makers with their own product lines: Broan-NuTone, ZLINE, Cosmo, Zephyr, Hauslane and FOTILE. Each model was checked with Amazon’s product data for stock, model number and listed features, and kept only if it was in stock, not low stock, when we wrote this. Specifications come from each maker’s listing, spec sheet or manual, with “Not stated” where the maker gives no figure. We did not install or run these inserts ourselves.

Hauslane’s inserts were out of stock or low in stock when we checked, and the FOTILE models we found are complete wall or under-cabinet hoods rather than inserts, so neither made the list. We also skipped look-alike inserts from sellers we could not identify as makers. We searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for each brand here and found no range hood recall. ZLINE has recalled certain gas ranges and built-in wall ovens; those recalls do not cover its range hood inserts.

Flush mount range hood questions, answered

What is the difference between an insert and a liner?

The insert, or power pack, holds the motor, filters and lights. A liner is a stainless box that lines the inside of a custom hood above the insert, protecting the wood from grease and heat. Broan-NuTone sells liners as options for its 21-inch power packs.

Can I put an insert inside a wood range hood?

Yes; that is what inserts are made for. ZLINE describes its inserts as designed for custom-built cabinetry, and Broan-NuTone’s power packs mount inside cabinets. Follow the maker’s clearance and mounting height; Broan-NuTone gives 24 to 30 inches above the cooktop for the PM400SS.

Can a range hood insert run without a duct?

Some can, with a kit. Broan-NuTone sells a non-ducted kit for the PM400SS. The Cosmo is listed as ducted only. For kitchens with no duct at all, our ductless guide covers hoods built for it.

How many CFM do I need for a gas range?

There is no single number. Higher-output burners and searing call for more airflow, while local codes may require make-up air above a set level. The inserts here run from 300 CFM for light cooking to 700 CFM for large pro-style ranges; your installer can size it to your range and your code.

Our final pick for a custom range hood

Buy the Broan-NuTone 21-inch PM400SS if you are building a hood over a standard range and want a quiet, efficient insert that one person can hang. Choose the Zephyr Monsoon I for a 36-inch hood over gas, the ZLINE 34 or 46-inch inserts for big pro-style ranges, the Cosmo for baffles at a lower airflow and the Broan-NuTone SmartSense power pack if you want the fan to run itself.

If you would rather buy a complete hood, start with our under-cabinet range hood picks. And whatever goes over your stove, you will want it running when the chiles hit a hot pan; see Mexican cooking methods explained for why charring and frying make so much smoke.
