Countdown, Presets or Delay? The Best Programmable Slow Cooker

Seven programmable slow cookers sorted by how the timer works: countdown, fixed presets, meal-time planning or delay start, with lead statements noted.

A long-cooked stew in a wide bowl, finished with fresh herbs.

The point of a programmable slow cooker is that dinner does not depend on you being home. A dial cooker keeps cooking until someone turns it, while a programmable one stops at the time you set and holds the food warm. For carnitas, birria or a pot of beans that runs for many hours, that switch is the whole reason to buy.

Programmable means different things on different machines, though. Some let you set any time, others offer a few presets, and one plans backward from the hour you eat. This guide sorts seven cookers by how the timer actually works. For the broader field, including dial models and browning pots, see our main slow cooker guide, and for the entry end of each maker’s range, see our affordable slow cooker guide.

Quick verdict: which programmable slow cooker to buy

For most homes, the best programmable slow cooker is the Hamilton Beach Ready, Set, Dinner 6-Quart: it has five cooking modes including MealTime and defrost, it has a probe, and the maker has a public statement on lead in its crocks. For crowds, buy the Hamilton Beach 8-Quart. To carry food to a party, buy the Crock-Pot Design Series 7-Quart with its locking lid.

Each pick states a timer of some kind, all but the Crock-Pot MyTime also state a warm function, and each ends with one honest reason to skip it. Where a maker gives no lead-free statement for its crock, we say so.

Four kinds of timer, and who each suits

Countdown. You choose a heat setting and any time in a range, such as 30 minutes to 18 hours. This is the most flexible and the one we would choose for following a recipe. America’s Test Kitchen wrote that it much preferred digital programmable cookers, because they let you choose the cooking time and setting, and noted that analog models will not switch to keep warm when cooking is done.

Presets. You choose from fixed steps. bella has four. It is easy, but a five-hour recipe has to be rounded. ATK raised the same point about limited time ranges in its small slow cooker review. Meal-time planning. Crock-Pot’s MyTime asks for your food, amount and meal time. Delay start. The cooker waits, then starts. GreenLife and GreenPan offer this, and it comes with a food safety question covered further down.

Our picks for the best programmable slow cooker

All seven were in stock on Amazon when we wrote this, from named makers. None is an exact listing on another of our pages. Two are colour variants of models covered elsewhere, each with its reason stated.

1. Hamilton Beach Ready, Set, Dinner 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker – MealTime, Probe and Defrost

Best overallHamilton Beach Portable Ready

This model gives the widest choice of how to run a cook. The listing names five cooking modes: low, medium and high, a MealTime mode where you set the time you want to eat and the cooker works out a temperature profile to finish then, and a defrost setting. If you would rather cook to a temperature, the probe goes in the meat and you set the target internal temperature.

The defrost setting is the extra here. Hamilton Beach says you press defrost, then pick high or low and a cooking time, and it does the rest. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s advice is to always defrost meat or poultry before it goes in a slow cooker, so we would treat this setting as an extra, not the reason to buy, and thaw meat in the refrigerator. Hamilton Beach’s brand team has said on Target’s site that its specifications for all its slow cookers, crocks included, prohibit any measurable amounts of lead. America’s Test Kitchen named a Hamilton Beach probe cooker its best traditional slow cooker, but that is a separate model, so we would not assume this one’s results match. The listing does not give a timer range or a warranty.

Why we like it

  • Five modes, including MealTime and defrost
  • Probe for cooking to a temperature
  • Maker statement on lead in its crocks
  • Clip-tight lid and a built-in lid rest

Key specifications

Model 33868
Capacity 6 quarts
Modes Low, medium, high, MealTime, defrost; probe
Timer Range not stated
Pot Stoneware crock
Lid Clip-tight lid with lid rest
Cleaning Crock dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated in listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who is out for long days, wants one machine for roasts and for beans, and values a stated statement on the crock.

Skip it if you want a simple machine with few buttons; the bella or the Set & Forget 8-quart have less to learn.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most cooking modes of the 6-quart picks
  • Probe for large cuts
  • Clip-tight lid

Cons

  • More modes to learn
  • Timer range not stated
  • Extension advice is to thaw meat first, whatever the setting

2. Hamilton Beach Set & Forget 8-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker – Big Pot, Any Time You Choose

Best largeHamilton Beach Set & Forget 8 Quart Programmable Slow Cooker

This is the large pot for someone who wants a real timer and a maker statement on lead. The stoneware crock holds an 8 lb chicken or a 6 lb roast and serves 10 or more, according to the listing. You mix warm, low or high with a time from 30 minutes to 18 hours, and the LED countdown shows how long until food is ready.

When the time ends, it switches to warm with nothing for you to do. That matters more on a big pot, because a large batch of birria or pozole is often ready before the guests are. The full-grip handles help when the crock is full, though an 8-quart stoneware crock is heavy and we would lift it with two hands. Hamilton Beach’s brand team has said on Target’s site that its specifications for all its slow cookers, crocks included, prohibit any measurable amounts of lead.

Why we like it

  • Eight quarts with a full timer
  • Adjustable time, not fixed steps
  • Automatic switch to warm
  • Maker statement on lead in its crocks

Key specifications

Model 33480
Capacity 8 quarts
Timer 30 min to 18 hr, countdown display
Keep warm Automatic after cooking
Pot Stoneware crock
Lid Glass lid
Cleaning Crock and lid dishwasher safe
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits a large family or anyone who cooks for parties and still wants to leave the house during the cook.

Skip it if you have a small household or a small cabinet; a pot this large is a poor match for a small batch.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Largest timed cooker on this page
  • Fine time adjustment
  • Simple touchpad wipes clean

Cons

  • No locking lid, so less suited to the car
  • Heavy when full
  • No probe

3. Crock-Pot Design Series 7-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker – Locking Lid and Countdown

Best for travelCrock-Pot® Design Series 7-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker

The Design Series pairs the timer with Crock-Pot’s Cook and Carry locking lid, so this is the one to take to a potluck. The program runs from 30 minutes to 20 hours, a digital display counts down, and the Auto Warm setting holds food at serving temperature. Seven quarts feeds nine or more, says the listing.

The stoneware is oven safe to 400 degrees F, and the bowl and glass lid are dishwasher safe. Crock-Pot’s warranty here is one year. It looks different from the usual black or steel slow cooker, in a blue the maker calls Morning Haze. Crock-Pot’s support team has said on Target’s site that the FDA specifies allowable amounts of lead and that its slow cookers meet or exceed applicable laws, with third-party testing; we found no explicit lead-free statement from the maker.

Why we like it

  • Locking lid with a tight seal
  • Long 20-hour program
  • Stoneware oven safe to 400 degrees F
  • Auto Warm setting stated

Key specifications

Model 2218661
Capacity 7 quarts
Timer 30 min to 20 hr, countdown display
Keep warm Auto Warm
Pot Stoneware, oven safe to 400 degrees F
Lid Cook and Carry locking lid
Cleaning Bowl and lid dishwasher safe
Warranty 1 year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who regularly carries a hot dish to a party or the church hall and wants the timer as well.

Skip it if an explicit lead-free statement from the maker is important to you; choose Hamilton Beach, bella or GreenLife here.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Locks for travel
  • Long program range
  • Oven-safe crock

Cons

  • No explicit lead-free statement found
  • No probe
  • Colour choice may not suit every kitchen

4. Crock-Pot MyTime 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker – Set the Hour You Want to Eat

Best meal-time planningCrock-Pot MyTime Programmable Slow Cooker

Most timers ask how long to cook. MyTime asks when you want to eat. You choose the food type, the amount and the meal time, and Crock-Pot says the cooker adjusts its cycle so the meal is ready then, rather than finishing early and sitting on warm. For a household with a fixed dinner hour, that is a real difference in how you plan the day.

A manual mode lets you control time and temperature yourself, and the flat digital screen is easy to wipe. This listing names no keep-warm setting or hold time; its pitch is that the cycle adjusts so the meal does not sit on warm. It is sold by Spreetail, a third-party seller, rather than by Amazon. Crock-Pot’s support team has said on Target’s site that the FDA specifies allowable amounts of lead and that its slow cookers meet or exceed applicable laws, with third-party testing; we found no explicit lead-free statement from the maker.

Why we like it

  • Plans backward from your meal time
  • Manual control is still there
  • Dishwasher-safe stoneware
  • Flat control panel

Key specifications

Model 2195312
Capacity 6 quarts, oval
Timer MyTime meal-time planning, or manual
Keep warm Not stated on this listing
Pot Stoneware
Lid Not stated on this listing
Cleaning Stoneware dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated on this listing

Why we recommend it

It suits someone who eats at the same hour each day and has had meals overcook while waiting on warm.

Skip it if you cook your own recipes by feel; a plain countdown timer gives you more direct control.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Different approach to timing
  • Less overcooking is the stated aim
  • Manual fallback

Cons

  • Limited to its food and amount choices in MyTime mode
  • No explicit lead-free statement found
  • No warm setting or warranty stated on this listing
  • Third-party seller

5. GreenLife 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker – Delay Start and a Stovetop Pot

Best delay startGreenLife 6 Quart Programmable Slow Cooker

GreenLife adds what most slow cookers here lack: a delay start. You can program up to 10 hours in advance, cook for 30 minutes to 20 hours, and the cooker stays warm for up to 4 hours. The lightweight pot is also removable for stovetop and oven use, so you can sear in it first and then return it to the base. Our browning slow cooker guide covers that style in depth.

GreenLife says its ceramic nonstick coating is free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium. Treat a coating gently, with wood or silicone tools. A note on the delay: raw meat should not wait in a warm room for hours, so we would keep delay start for non-perishable ingredients unless the maker’s manual directs otherwise.

Why we like it

  • Delay timer up to 10 hours
  • Coating stated free of lead and cadmium
  • Pot works on the stove and in the oven
  • Lightweight pot

Key specifications

Model CC004773-001
Capacity 6 quarts
Timer 30 min to 20 hr; delay up to 10 hr
Keep warm Up to 4 hr
Pot Ceramic nonstick coated removable pot
Lid Glass lid
Cleaning Pot and lid dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who wants to sear in one pot and likes to hold off the start, for example with beans or a vegetable dish.

Skip it if you would rather have a plain stoneware crock than a coated metal pot.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Delay start
  • Sear and slow cook in one pot
  • Maker’s lead statement on the coating

Cons

  • Coating will wear over time
  • Warm hold limited to 4 hours
  • Warranty not on the listing

6. bella SAVOR 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker – Four Presets, Easy to Learn

Simplest timerbella SAVOR 6qt Programmable Non-Toxic Slow Cooker

If a long menu puts you off, bella’s four presets of 4, 6, 8 and 10 hours are about as simple as a programmable slow cooker gets. You choose low, medium or high and a preset, and it switches to warm at the end. There is no fine time adjustment, and that is the trade-off: a recipe that wants five hours means rounding one way or the other.

The maker says its EverGood ceramic nonstick coating is free from PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, lead and cadmium, and the dishwasher-safe stoneware pot and glass lid keep cleanup easy. The same model in another colour is on our budget slow cooker page. We kept it here in this colour because it is the plainest example of a preset timer from a maker with a clear lead statement.

Why we like it

  • Four clear presets
  • Automatically switches to warm
  • Maker’s statement on lead and cadmium
  • Cool-touch handles

Key specifications

Model 35175
Capacity 6 quarts
Timer 4, 6, 8 or 10 hr presets
Keep warm Automatic after cooking
Pot Stoneware with EverGood coating
Lid Glass lid
Cleaning Pot and lid dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a first slow cooker buyer, or someone who only ever cooks a few long recipes.

Skip it if your recipes call for times between the presets or for under four hours.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Simplest controls here
  • Clear statement on the coating
  • Medium heat setting

Cons

  • Fixed time steps
  • No locking lid
  • Coating needs gentle tools

7. GreenPan Elite 14-in-1 6-Quart Slow Cooker – Presets, Delay and In-Pot Browning

Most functionsGreenPan Elite 14-in-1 Nonstick 6QT Electric Slow Cooker

This one is for someone who wants more than slow cooking from the same machine. The 14 one-touch presets include slow cook, soup, stir-fry, rice, sear/saute, steam, simmer/buffet, bake, reheat and warm, along with a delay timer. You can brown meat directly in the hard-anodized pot, so there is no skillet to wash. A stainless steamer basket is included, according to the listing.

The listing’s PFAS-free claim concerns GreenPan’s Thermolon Volt ceramic coating. America’s Test Kitchen recommended a different GreenPan, the Elite 8-in-1, with reservations, so read this one’s reviews closely before you buy. The same model in another colour is on our rice and slow cooker combo guide; we kept it here because it is the one pick that pairs a delay timer with built-in browning.

Why we like it

  • Delay timer built in
  • Browning in the pot
  • Metal utensil safe, per the maker
  • Steamer basket included

Key specifications

Model CC009986-001
Capacity 6 quarts
Timer Presets and delay timer
Keep warm Warm preset
Pot Hard-anodized pot with Thermolon Volt coating
Lid Tempered glass lid
Cleaning Pot and lid dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a small kitchen where one appliance needs to do several jobs.

Skip it if you only want to slow cook; the menu adds things you would pay for and not use.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Many functions in one base
  • Sears without another pan
  • Hard-anodized pot

Cons

  • ATK has reservations about a sibling model
  • Listing does not state timer range
  • More buttons than the other picks

How to choose a slow cooker with a timer

Match the timer to your longest day

Add your commute to your work hours. A 10-hour preset is short if you leave at 7 and return at 6. Countdown timers here run up to 20 hours on the Crock-Pot Design Series and the GreenLife.

Check what happens at the end

Most models here switch to warm by themselves. The time they hold matters too: GreenLife states 4 hours. Long holds can overcook delicate food, which is the problem MyTime says it aims to solve.

A bowl of chickpeas and greens with a spoonful of pale sauce, beside fresh chiles
A chickpea bowl with greens and fresh chiles alongside.

Be careful with delay start

Clemson Cooperative Extension advises keeping perishable foods refrigerated until it is time to prepare them for the slow cooker. So a delay start that leaves raw meat sitting at room temperature is a poor idea. Use it for ingredients that are safe at room temperature, or follow your manual.

Think about the crock

Stoneware crocks are glazed, so we look for a maker statement on lead. Hamilton Beach has one, bella and GreenLife state it for their coatings, and Crock-Pot’s published answer stops short of saying lead-free. Metal pots such as GreenPan’s let you sear in the same pot but rely on a coating that wears.

Size for the batch you actually make

ATK looked for a generous 6- to 7-quart stated capacity and noted that few slow cookers actually hold as much as they state. Plan on filling below the stated figure, and see our guide to charro and refried beans if beans are your main use.

How we picked these seven slow cookers

We kept only cookers whose listing states a timer of some form and a warm function, with one exception noted plainly: the Crock-Pot MyTime listing names no warm setting at all. All were plain in-stock new offers from named makers. We read America’s Test Kitchen’s 2026 slow cooker review and its small slow cooker review, plus maker and listing details. ATK did not review most of these exact models, so most of this page rests on what makers state. We have not used these products ourselves.

We left out cookers whose makers gave no statement on lead in a glazed crock, such as Elite Gourmet, and the Breville listings we found are pressure cookers rather than slow cookers. We searched the CPSC recall database through saferproducts.gov by brand. It shows a 2003 Hamilton Beach and Proctor-Silex recall of older slow cookers, a 2020 Crock-Pot Express multi-cooker recall, a 2023 Sensio recall of Bella pressure cookers and a 2020 recall of GreenPan SimmerLite Dutch ovens. None of those covers a model on this page. Check your model at cpsc.gov if you own one.

Programmable slow cooker questions, answered

What does programmable mean on a slow cooker?

It means you set a cooking time, and the machine stops cooking at the end of it, usually moving to a warm setting. A manual slow cooker keeps going until you turn the dial.

Do all programmable slow cookers have a keep warm function?

Most do, and every pick here names one, but what they do differs. Read the listing for how long warm lasts: GreenLife gives 4 hours, and many listings do not say.

Is it safe to use a delay timer with raw meat?

Clemson Extension says to keep perishable food refrigerated until you prepare it for the slow cooker. So we would not leave raw meat waiting in a cooker at room temperature.

What size programmable slow cooker should I buy?

Six quarts suits most families. ATK looked for 6 to 7 quarts of stated capacity. Go to 8 quarts for big gatherings, and remember that a pot usually holds less than its stated size.

Can I cook frozen meat in a programmable slow cooker?

Clemson Extension says to always defrost meat or poultry first. The Hamilton Beach 33868 has a defrost setting named by the maker, but we would still thaw meat in the refrigerator. Our main slow cooker guide covers this too.

Our final pick for cooking while you are out

For most kitchens we would buy the Hamilton Beach Ready, Set, Dinner 6-Quart, for its range of modes, probe and clear statement on the crock. If you want a pot that sears, read our browning slow cooker guide. Leftovers keep well, and we explain how to warm them in how to reheat Mexican leftovers. And on a night no slow cooker was set, call to order from Julia’s.
