Silicone, Plastic or Wire Grid: The Best Sink Mat for Your Basin

The best sink mat for your basin: silicone, soft plastic or a raised wire grid, how each deals with the drain, and how to size one before you buy.

A white double sink under a window full of plants.

A sink takes a lot of hits. Cast iron, stone molcajetes and enameled pots all land in it, and every knock can scratch stainless steel or chip enamel. Glasses suffer too, as they tend to break when they land on a hard sink floor. A sink mat puts a cushion or a rack between the two, and it costs little next to replacing a sink.

The catch is that sink mats can hold on to water, grease and film if the drain is blocked or they never come out for a wash. This guide looks at the mats and protectors worth considering, how they deal with drainage, and how to size one for your basin, whether it is a small rental sink or a full workstation.

Quick verdict: which sink mat to buy

For most kitchens, the best sink mat is the OXO Good Grips Large Sink Mat: a rigid mat with a silicone top that lifts dishes, drains underneath and goes in the dishwasher. Choose the Joseph Joseph SinkSaver if your drain is off-center, the KitchenAid wire protector for heavy pots, and the Better Houseware grid for a compact basin.

Our picks for the best sink mat

1. OXO Good Grips Large Sink Mat – A Rigid Mat With a Silicone Top

Best overallOXO Good Grips Large Sink Mat

Most sink mats are floppy plastic. OXO’s is a rigid mat with a silicone surface and silicone feet, which holds its shape when you set a heavy pot on it. At 12.25 by 16 inches and half an inch high, it covers a good part of a typical single basin.

The silicone top cushions both the sink and the dish, and OXO says it protects against chipping and scratching. The feet keep it from sliding and raise it so water can flow beneath and dry quickly. OXO calls it mold-resistant and PVC-free, and it goes in the dishwasher, which is the simple way to deal with the film sink mats tend to collect.

We could not find a published, independent head-to-head test of sink mats. Many roundups for this product turned out to be thin affiliate lists, so we are relying on OXO’s details here. There is a small version on Amazon as well, for a narrow basin.

Why we like it

  • Rigid body with a cushioned silicone top
  • Non-slip feet raise it for water flow
  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing
  • PVC-free, per OXO

Key specifications

Material Silicone over a rigid mat
Size 12.25 x 16 x 0.5 in
Drain access Not stated
Feet or grip Silicone feet
Care Dishwasher safe
Sink fit Most single basins large enough for the size
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits most single-basin stainless or enamel sinks, especially when you wash heavier pans and want a mat that does not flex.

Skip it if your basin is narrower than 12.25 inches at the bottom, once you allow for curved corners. Measure before you buy.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Holds its shape
  • Cushions as well as lifts
  • Sold by Amazon on this listing

Cons

  • Too big for many small basins
  • Rigid, so it will not bend out of the way

2. Joseph Joseph SinkSaver Adjustable Mat – Two Pieces That Fit Round a Drain

Best adjustableJoseph Joseph SinkSaver Adjustable Sink Protector Mat

Sinks vary, and drains sit in odd places. The SinkSaver gets around that with two L-shaped pieces, one 11.25 inches on each side and the other 7.75, that you arrange in the basin to work around the drain. The grid sections lock together, says Joseph Joseph, to make a secure base with a soft rubber surface.

It stands half an inch tall, so dishes sit above any standing water. It washes and dries by hand, and it carries a one-year warranty. The material description on the listing mentions ABS plastic as well as the soft rubber surface, so we would treat it as a plastic frame with a soft top.

Two pieces are also simpler to lift out and clean, since you can pull one and leave the other. The trade-off is the join. If you move it about a lot, the sections may need setting back in place.

Why we like it

  • Two L-shaped sections arrange around the drain
  • Soft rubber surface, per the maker
  • Lifts dishes half an inch
  • One-year warranty

Key specifications

Model 85037
Material ABS plastic with soft rubber surface, per the listing
Size L-pieces 11.25 x 11.25 in and 7.75 x 7.75 in, 0.5 in thick
Drain access Works around the drain
Feet or grip Non-slip
Care Hand wash
Sink fit Most basins
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits a sink with an offset or rear drain, where a one-piece mat would block the opening, and anyone who wants to resize the mat by leaving one piece out.

Skip it if you want a one-piece mat you can toss in the dishwasher. This one is hand wash.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Adjusts to the basin and drain
  • Comes apart for cleaning
  • Stated warranty

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • Two-piece design can shift apart
  • Grid gaps can catch food

3. KitchenAid Small Sink Protector, Mineral Water – A Wire Rack That Also Dries Dishes

Best wire protectorKitchenAid Rust Resistant Small Sink Protector with Non Slip Feet and Center Opening for Sink Stopper and Quick Drying

Some sinks are better served by a wire rack than a mat, since it lifts pots higher and lets water run away beneath them. KitchenAid’s small protector is 10.5 by 12.5 inches and 1.4 inches tall, with rust-resistant satin wires, soft non-slip feet and a center opening for reaching the stopper.

KitchenAid says it prevents scratches and dents from cookware and doubles as a drying rack. The height is the main benefit. It lifts a pan well above the water that gathers at the drain, and wire leaves little surface for film to build up on.

The small size will not fill a large basin, which is fine if you just want a landing pad for the heaviest pans. Wires also leave narrow gaps, so a small bowl may sit crooked and thin glasses can tip. For glassware, a soft mat is the safer choice.

Why we like it

  • Center opening reaches the stopper
  • Soft feet hold it in place
  • Rust-resistant wires, per KitchenAid
  • Doubles as a drying rack

Why we recommend it

It suits people who wash heavy pots, who like the sink to drain quickly, and who have a center drain.

Skip it if your drain is at the back of the basin, since the opening will not line up with it, or you mainly wash thin glass.

Pros and cons

4. iDesign Pebblz Large Sink Grid, Graphite – A Plain Grid for the Basin

Best plastic gridiDesign Pebblz Large Plastic Sink Grid

iDesign’s Pebblz has been around for years in clear and colored plastic, and it is a plain, practical choice. The large version measures 11.75 by 15.75 inches, with an open grid of pebble shapes that lets water through and is supposed to keep your pots, plates and glasses away from the sink bottom.

The open pattern should also keep food from sitting on the mat for long. iDesign lists it for kitchen, bathroom, laundry and basement sinks, and the graphite color should show marks less than a clear one. It is a thin sheet of plastic, so it protects against scratches better than it absorbs a hard knock.

iDesign says little about care in this listing, and no published test we found covers it. It is a straightforward product, so check it with a ruler: if your basin floor is smaller than the mat, it will not sit flat.

Why we like it

  • Open grid lets water through
  • Large size for a full basin
  • Dark color helps hide marks
  • Simple one-piece design

Key specifications

Model 60663
Material Plastic
Size 11.75 x 15.75 in
Drain access Open grid
Feet or grip Non-skid, per the listing
Care Not stated
Sink fit Medium and large basins
Warranty Warranty stated without terms

Why we recommend it

It suits a basic setup where you just want scratches to stop, and a mat that stays flat without drawing attention.

Skip it if you drop heavy pots into the sink. A thin plastic grid offers less protection than a rigid mat or wire rack.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Plain and simple
  • Lets water drain
  • Sold by Amazon on this listing

Cons

  • Thin
  • Little care detail
  • No published review found

5. mDesign Adjustable Sink Mat, Clear, Set of 3 – Three Mats to Share Out

Best for double sinksmDesign Adjustable Dish Drying Mat/Grid - Soft Plastic Sink Protector

A double sink needs two mats. mDesign sells this soft plastic pebble mat as a set of three, which gives you a spare or enough for a double sink with one left for the bathroom. The title calls it adjustable, and it is sold as a dish drying grid as well as a sink protector.

The Amazon data for this listing gives no feature details or dimensions, and we will not guess at them. What we can tell you from the title is the material, soft plastic, and the pebble pattern for quick draining. Check the size on the listing page before you buy.

The seller here is MetroDecor, the company behind the mDesign name. Choose this set for value across several sinks, and take the OXO if a single sink is all you have and you want something more solid.

Why we like it

  • Three mats in a set
  • Soft plastic cushions dishes, per the title
  • Pebble pattern for draining, per the title
  • Sold through the company behind mDesign

Key specifications

Sink fit Check size on listing

Why we recommend it

It suits double sinks and households that want more than one mat, whether as spares or for a second sink.

Skip it if you want to know exact dimensions before ordering and cannot check the page, since the data here is thin.

Pros and cons

  • Set of three
  • Soft on dishes
  • Clear, so it blends in

Cons

  • Thin listing data
  • Clear plastic can show film
  • Soft mats give less lift

6. Better Houseware Small White Sink Protector – For Compact Single Basins

Best for small sinksBetter Houseware Small White Sink Protector for Kitchen Sink

Small basins get skipped by most sink mats, which assume a much bigger sink. This Better Houseware grid is sized for them at 12 by 10.25 by 1 inch, and the maker is blunt that it fits compact basins and not large or divided ones. It is a white metal grid raised off the sink floor.

It is coated carbon steel, and the maker says the coating helps it resist rust, but asks you to rinse and towel-dry after heavy use and stay away from abrasive scrubbers. Scratched coating on carbon steel can rust, so we think that advice is worth following. White looks at home in a white enamel sink.

The listing states no warranty, and the current offer comes from a third-party seller, WeRespectMAP, so check that before you order. The maker pitches it at rentals, apartments and RVs, and it is the one mat here that says so clearly.

Why we like it

  • Sized for compact basins
  • Lifts dishes above standing water
  • White finish suits white sinks
  • Clear fit warning from the maker

Key specifications

Model 1485/W
Material Coated carbon steel
Size 12 x 10.25 x 1 in
Drain access Not stated
Feet or grip Raised grid
Care Rinse and towel-dry, no abrasives
Sink fit Compact single basins
Warranty None stated

Why we recommend it

It suits small kitchens, rentals and RVs with a small single basin, where most protectors will not fit.

Skip it if your basin is large or divided, as the maker warns, or you do not want to dry a rack by hand.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fits where others do not
  • Good height
  • Sized clearly

Cons

  • Coating needs care
  • No warranty
  • Third-party seller

7. Home Basics PVC Sink Mat, White, 11 x 13 in – The Plain Entry-Level Mat

Simplest optionHome Basics Kitchen PVC Sink Mat

Sometimes the job is modest: stop a few plates clanking on the steel. This Home Basics mat is plain, flexible PVC at 13 by 11 inches, with holes across it so water and small bits of food pass through. The listing describes it as pliable and says it stays put in the sink.

It suits a smaller basin without much trimming, and there is little to go wrong. It will not lift a heavy pot far, and a flexible mat will mainly guard against scratches. PVC is also the material OXO makes a point of not using, so choose silicone if you have a preference.

Home Basics is a housewares brand sold beyond Amazon too, but the listing is written by the seller, Home Intuition, a third party. We found no published review, so this rests on the listing. It is the kind of thing you can replace when it gets tired, instead of scrubbing.

Why we like it

  • Flexible and simple
  • Holes let water and food through
  • Compact 13 x 11 inch size
  • Cushions plates, per the listing

Key specifications

Model BM45978
Material PVC
Size 13 x 11 in
Drain access Holes across the mat
Feet or grip Pliable, stays in place per the listing
Care Not stated
Sink fit Small basins
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a small basin, a rental or a second sink, where you just want an inexpensive layer between dishes and steel.

Skip it if you wash cast iron or other heavy pans. Choose the OXO or a wire rack.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Simple
  • Flexible
  • Fits smaller basins

Cons

  • Not much lift
  • PVC, which some buyers avoid
  • Third-party seller

How to choose a sink mat that actually helps

Measure the flat part of the basin

Corners curve, so the flat floor is smaller than the opening at the top. Measure that flat part, then note where the drain sits. Better Houseware makes the same point on its own listing, telling buyers to measure the flat inside bottom before ordering.

Choose a mat or a rack

A soft mat cushions glass and thin ceramic, while a raised wire rack gives more lift and lets water run away, but a glass can still tip in its gaps. Silicone on a rigid frame sits between them. For a heavy-duty basin, the wire rack is often more useful, and for a glass-heavy sink, soft wins.

Check the drain

This is where cheap mats cause trouble. If a mat sits on the drain, water backs up. Look for a center opening, an open grid or a pair of pieces that work around it. If you have a strainer, make sure the mat leaves room to lift it out, and our guide to the best sink strainer covers those.

Consider your sink material

Stainless steel scratches, enamel chips and composite can scuff. Soft mats and rubber-footed racks are the point here. If you own a cast iron sink, read our guide to cast iron kitchen sinks for more on its finish, and check the sink maker’s care advice before leaving anything in it long term.

Plan to take it out

Any mat gathers film. Lift it out, wash it and let the sink dry, because water trapped below a mat can mark some finishes. Mats that fit in the dishwasher make this easier. To keep sponges and brushes out of the basin as well, see our guide to the best sink caddy.

How we picked these seven sink mats

We looked for mats and protectors from identifiable makers, in stock on Amazon when we wrote this, and we aimed for a real range of sizes and materials. We read each listing for size, material, drain access and care. We searched for independent reviews and found mostly thin affiliate lists, so we did not rely on those, and no independent head-to-head test turned up in our search. We did not use these mats ourselves, so the reasons here come from the makers’ details and from what a kitchen needs. A brand search of the federal recall database found no recall covering these mats.

Sink mat questions, answered

Are kitchen sink protector mats worth it?

If you handle heavy pots or thin glass, generally yes, since a mat is cheap next to a chipped sink or a broken glass. If your sink is small and you hand-wash with care, you may not need one.

Do sink mats cause mold?

Anything left wet can grow film. OXO calls its silicone mat mold-resistant, but that does not replace cleaning. Lift the mat out, wash it and let both it and the sink dry.

Will a sink mat fit around a garbage disposal?

Only if the opening lines up. Center-opening racks suit a center drain, and the two-piece Joseph Joseph can be arranged around a rear or offset one.

What is the difference between a sink mat and a bottom grid?

A mat is usually a soft, generic sheet. A bottom grid is usually a rigid rack, often cut to one sink model by its maker; check your sink maker for one.

Can you put a sink mat in the dishwasher?

Some of them. OXO says yes for its model here, while Joseph Joseph says hand wash. Check the care line for the mat you buy.

The mat we would put in the sink first

For most sinks, begin with the OXO Good Grips Large Sink Mat, then move to the Joseph Joseph if the drain gets in the way. When the dishes come out, our guide to the best dish drying mat covers the next step, and the best sink caddy takes care of the sponge and brush.
