A sink stopper is a small thing to shop for until you buy one that doesn’t fit. Filling the sink for a stack of comals or a pot that needs a soak comes down to one number: how wide your drain opening is. A kitchen drain, a garbage disposal opening and a bar or utility drain are all different, and a stopper made for one may drop straight through another.
So this guide sorts eight stoppers by fit. Each one states what it’s for, and we repeat that in plain words. We have not used them. Two are from online-first brands, which we flag, and several work only with a particular disposal or strainer body, so read the fit line before you buy.

Quick verdict: which sink stopper to buy
For a regular kitchen sink, start with the GoodCook Kitchen Sink Stopper: it’s flexible, it says it fits most kitchen sinks, and it has a knob for lifting it out. If you want a strainer and a stopper in one, the GoodCook Sink Strainer & Stopper does both. If you have an InSinkErator disposal, buy the InSinkErator Stainless Stopper made for it.

Our picks for the best sink stopper, by drain type
1. GoodCook Kitchen Sink Stopper – A Simple Seal for Most Kitchen Sinks

This is the plain tool most kitchens need. GoodCook says it stops the water flow to turn your sink into a tub, with a flexible design for a tight seal and an easy-to-grip knob so you can lift it out when the water’s hot.
Fit is stated as most kitchen sinks. The listing gives no diameter, so if your drain is unusual, check it against the box. It’s flexible rather than a rigid disk, which should help it adapt to small differences between drains, though we haven’t confirmed that.
There’s no strainer, no finish to match and nothing to install. It does one job, and it comes from a maker that’s easy to find.
Why we like it
- Stated to fit most kitchen sinks
- Flexible seal
- Knob for lifting it out
- Nothing to install

- Stated to fit most kitchen sinks
Cons
- No diameter stated
- Only stops; doesn’t strain
- Material isn’t listed
2. GoodCook Sink Strainer & Stopper – Turn the Knob, Switch the Job

If you’d rather have one piece sit in the drain all day, this does two things. It’s a stainless steel basket with holes sized to catch food scraps. Twist the knob 90 degrees and push down, and a rubber stopper engages so the sink fills.
GoodCook calls it a universal size that fits most sink drains, though the listing doesn’t give a number. Compared with a plain stopper, the basket means you don’t need to swap pieces when you go from rinsing to soaking.
We already cover pure strainers in our sink strainer guide. This one is here because the stopper function is half of the product.
Why we like it
- Strainer and plug in one
- Twist-and-push stopper
- Steel basket
- Universal size, per GoodCook

Pros
- Two jobs
- Sold by Amazon
- Simple twist action
Cons
- No diameter stated
- More moving parts to clean
- Basket needs regular emptying
3. InSinkErator Stainless Sink Stopper – Made for InSinkErator Disposals

If your sink drains into an InSinkErator disposal, this stopper was made for it. It’s stainless steel in a brushed finish, 3.25 inches across and 1 inch deep, and the maker says it’s compatible with any InSinkErator-made disposer. A sister listing in the same line says it fits a standard 3-1/2-inch kitchen drain.
The maker pitches it two ways: as a drain cover that keeps water and food out, and as a decorative piece that comes in a range of finishes to match a flange. It’s easy to insert and remove, and the maker warns against abrasive cleaners on the finish.
If you have a different brand of disposal, don’t assume this will fit. The maker doesn’t promise that, so measure your opening first.
Why we like it
- Made by the disposal’s maker
- Stainless steel
- Size is stated
- Other finishes available
Key specifications

Why we recommend it
It suits InSinkErator owners who’ve lost the original stopper or want a nicer one.
Skip it if you have another brand of disposal, or a plain drain. Start with GoodCook instead.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear compatibility statement
- Sturdy material
- Size stated
Cons
- Tied to one disposal brand
- Avoid abrasive cleaners
- Not for a plain drain without a disposal

4. KRAUS WasteGuard Kitchen Sink Stopper – Fits Kraus EZLock Disposals

This is a narrower choice. KRAUS made it for its own WasteGuard disposals with the EZLock mounting assembly, and it lists the models: KWD100-100MBL, KWD100-33MBL, KWD100-75MBL and KWD110-50MBL. The stopper is 3-1/8 inches by 1-3/8 inches, and it fits a 3-1/8-inch opening.
It’s stainless steel with a low profile. KRAUS says it helps keep utensils from falling into the grinding chamber and works as a splash guard while the disposal runs, reducing the mess of waste and dirty water splashing into the sink.
If your drain is the usual size or you don’t own that disposal, this isn’t the right one. It’s here because when you do own it, the matching part is the one to buy.
Why we like it
- Lists the exact disposal models
- Also acts as a splash guard, per KRAUS
- Stainless steel
- Size stated
Key specifications
| Model | GDC-1 |
|---|---|
| Type | Disposal stopper |

| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits owners of those KRAUS disposals who want the matching stopper.
Skip it if you don’t own a listed KRAUS WasteGuard disposal.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No guesswork on compatibility
- Sold by Amazon
- Low profile
Cons
- Very narrow fit
- Newer listing
- No use for most kitchens
5. KOHLER Duostrainer Basket K-8803 – An Open and Close Replacement

This is a basket strainer with an open and close stopper, polished chrome in this listing, for sink installations with 3-1/2-inch or 4-inch outlets. It’s a removable stainless steel basket with a stopper built in, so you close it to fill and open it to drain.
One detail matters. Kohler says it’s offered separately from the K-8804 Duostrainer body, so you can mix and match finishes. In other words, this basket is the top piece, not a whole drain. It’s most useful if you already have a Kohler Duostrainer in the sink.
The listing offers a limited warranty and few other details, so check your sink’s model before ordering.
Why we like it
- Closes to fill, opens to drain
- States outlet sizes
- Stainless basket
- Limited warranty
Key specifications
| Model | K8803-CP |
|---|---|
| Type | Basket with stopper |
| Stated fit | 3-1/2 or 4 in outlets; pairs with K-8804 body |
| Material | Stainless steel, chrome |
| Also strains | Yes |
| How it comes out | Lift the basket |
| Works with a disposal | Not stated |
| Warranty | Limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits owners of a Kohler Duostrainer who need a replacement basket with a working stopper.
Skip it if you don’t have the Kohler body. On its own, it doesn’t replace a full drain assembly.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Made by the fixture’s maker
- Two positions
- Clear outlet sizes
Cons
- Needs the matching body
- Few listing details
- Finish may not match your sink
6. Highcraft Kitchen Sink Basket Strainer 97333 – Standard Drains, With a Rubber Plug

This is a replacement basket for standard drains, stated at 3.25 inches, with a chrome-plated stainless steel body and a rubber stopper. Highcraft says it works as a strainer or a plug depending on which way you set it, and it has 32 bar holes for draining.
Highcraft reads as a plumbing parts label sold largely online, so we count it as one of the page’s two online-first picks. It does give a one-year warranty and says the basket is dishwasher safe.
As a replacement, it needs a drain that takes a 3.25-inch basket. Measure your old one before you order.
Why we like it
- Strainer and plug
- Size stated
- One-year warranty
- Dishwasher safe, per Highcraft
Key specifications
| Model | 97333 |
|---|---|
| Type | Basket with stopper |
| Stated fit | Standard drains; 3.25 in |
| Material | Chrome-plated stainless steel, rubber |
| Also strains | Yes |
| How it comes out | Lift the basket |
| Works with a disposal | Not stated |
| Warranty | 1 year |
Why we recommend it
It suits someone replacing a worn basket on a standard kitchen drain who wants the plug built in.
Skip it if your opening isn’t close to 3.25 inches, or you’d rather have a fixture maker’s part.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stated size
- Warranty
- Sold by Amazon
Cons
- Online-first label
- Rubber plug may wear over time
- Fit depends on your drain

7. Hilltop Products 6-Inch Flat Sink Stoppers, 2 Pack – Covers the Drain From Above

Instead of fitting into the drain, this rubber mat-style stopper is 6 inches across and sits over it. Hilltop says it’s designed for a standard 3.5-inch kitchen drain and also works in the bathroom and laundry room. You get one black and one gray.
The appeal of a flat stopper is that it isn’t so fussy about the exact diameter. If the surface around your drain is flat, a wide cover has more margin than a plug. A deep flange or an uneven sink surface may not seal as well, so have a look at your drain before you buy. Hilltop says to press it in place, with no tools.
This is the other online-first brand on the page. It’s sold by the brand itself and carries a one-year warranty on the listing. We’ve left out its broader safety language, since it comes without a named standard.
Why we like it
- Wide cover for a 3.5-inch drain
- Two in the pack
- No tools
- Also useful in a tub or laundry sink
Key specifications
| Model | TPS-005256 |
|---|---|
| Type | Flat cover |
| Stated fit | Standard 3.5 in kitchen drain |
| Material | Rubber |
| Also strains | No |
| How it comes out | Not stated |
| Works with a disposal | Not stated |
| Warranty | 1 year |
Why we recommend it
It suits someone whose drop-in stoppers never seat well, or who wants a spare for another sink.
Skip it if your drain sits in a recessed or sloped area. A flat cover needs a flat surface to seal.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Forgiving on diameter
- Two pieces
- Sold by the brand itself
Cons
- Online-first brand
- Needs a flat surface
- No named safety standard
8. Danco 1-1/2 Inch Rubber Drain Stopper – For Small Utility and Bar Drains

Danco’s rubber plug is for a much smaller drain, 1-1/2 to 1-5/8 inches. It’s tapered so it wedges in, and it comes with a split ring for lifting it out. A pull chain can be added, sold separately. Danco gives it a one-year limited warranty.
The listing names bathtub, laundry, kitchen, RV and utility drains, but a regular kitchen drain is far too wide for it. It’s a match for a small bar sink, a prep sink, a camper or a laundry tub with a small opening, so measure first.
If your kitchen has a small second sink, this is the cheap, simple answer. It’s unlikely to be the answer for your main sink.
Why we like it
- Tapered for a tight fit
- Split ring for removal
- Accepts a chain
- One-year limited warranty
Key specifications
| Model | 80227 |
|---|---|
| Type | Tapered plug |
| Stated fit | 1-1/2 to 1-5/8 in drains |
| Material | Rubber |
| Also strains | No |
| How it comes out | Pull ring |
| Works with a disposal | No |
| Warranty | 1 year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits owners of small secondary sinks or RVs, where a standard kitchen stopper won’t work.
Skip it if you’re shopping for a standard kitchen drain. This will drop right in and do nothing.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear size range
- Plain, durable material
- Chain option
Cons
- Too small for a main kitchen drain
- Ring can separate, per the listing’s own advice
- Chain sold separately
How to choose a sink stopper for your drain
Measure the opening
Use a ruler across the widest part of the drain. Many kitchen drains are sold as 3-1/2 inch, and stoppers for them are often a little smaller. Bar, RV and utility drains are far smaller, around 1-1/2 inches in the listings here.
Check for a garbage disposal
A disposal usually has its own stopper shape. InSinkErator and KRAUS both make parts for their own units, and both say so. If you know the brand, start there.
Choose plug, basket or flat cover
A plug drops in. A basket stays in the drain and strains, and some have a stopper built in. A flat cover sits over the whole drain, and it’s more forgiving but needs a flat surface. You can read more about catching scraps in our sink strainer guide.
Think about what you’ll do with it
If you soak big pots, seal matters most. If you also rinse and scrape all day, a basket that stops and strains saves swapping. Our sink mat guide also helps protect a sink you use hard.
Look at how it comes out
Hot, soapy water isn’t something you want to reach into. A knob, ring or lift tab makes it easier.
Read the fine print on parts
Some of these are replacement parts rather than complete assemblies. The Kohler basket, for instance, works with its own body. Check before you buy.
How we picked these eight stoppers
We read each listing and kept stoppers from identifiable makers with a stated fit, in stock with a new offer, and none already on our strainer page. We searched for independent comparisons of kitchen sink stoppers and found only retailer pages and short buyer comments, so these picks rest on the listings and maker details, not on a named review. We have not tested them ourselves.
We left out bathtub-only stoppers, bathroom pop-up assemblies that need installing, disposal flanges and a large number of nearly identical unbranded rubber disks. Two picks, Highcraft and Hilltop, are online-first labels, and we kept the page to those two.

Kitchen drain stopper questions, answered
What size is a standard kitchen sink drain?
Listings in this guide describe the standard kitchen drain as about 3-1/2 inches, and Kohler gives 3-1/2 or 4 inch outlets. Measure your own, since stopper sizes are often a little smaller than the drain’s nominal size.
Will any stopper work with a garbage disposal?
Not necessarily. InSinkErator and KRAUS tie their stoppers to their own disposals. Others don’t mention disposals at all. A flat cover may work if the surface around the opening is flat, but check before you rely on it.
Can I run the disposal with the stopper in?
KRAUS says its stopper can act as a splash guard while the disposal runs. Follow your disposal’s own manual rather than assuming the same is true of another stopper.
Can I use a bathtub stopper in a kitchen sink?
Some listings say so, including Hilltop’s. Tub stoppers made only for baths aren’t what we’d buy first, since kitchen sinks have different openings. Check the stated fit.
Why does my stopper leak slowly?
A worn rubber seal, a small size mismatch or a dirty rim are the usual suspects. Clean the rim first and then check the size. A slow leak on a very old stopper is often just wear.
Our final pick for your sink
For most kitchen sinks, the GoodCook Kitchen Sink Stopper is the easy, low-risk first try. Choose the GoodCook 2-in-1 if you’d like it to strain too, and buy the maker’s part if you own an InSinkErator or KRAUS disposal. If you’re rebuilding the whole sink area, see our sink caddy guide as well. When the dishes have won, call to order from Julia’s menu, and read how we reheat Mexican leftovers.
