A tablecloth does more work at a family dinner than it gets credit for. It takes the drips from a pot of salsa, the rings from a pitcher of agua fresca and the crumbs from a basket of tortillas, and it turns a scratched kitchen table into a place you are glad to sit down at. For a Día de Muertos gathering or a long Sunday comida, it is also the first layer of the table you are dressing.
The right cloth depends on how you eat. Linen and cotton look and feel the best but stain like any fabric. Treated polyester shrugs off most spills and comes out of the washer nearly wrinkle-free. Vinyl and oilcloth simply wipe clean. This guide names nine tablecloths worth buying across those materials, from Threadmade, Solino Home, Elrene, Benson Mills, Urban Villa, Hiasan, Lenox and Utopia Kitchen, and explains how to size one so it hangs right.

Quick verdict: which tablecloth to buy
For most homes, the best tablecloth is the Threadmade Continental Solid Texture Tablecloth: it is a heavy 100% polyester cloth with a water-, stain- and fade-resistant finish, it goes in the washer and the dryer, and it comes in rectangle and oval sizes from 60 x 84 to 60 x 144 inches. If you want natural fiber, the Solino Home 100% Linen Tablecloth is the one to buy, and if the table sees children, crayons and salsa every night, the Elrene Monterey vinyl tablecloth wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Our picks for the best tablecloths
These nine cover the ways a home table actually gets used: a hard-wearing everyday cloth, natural linen and cotton for when the table should feel special, wipe-clean vinyl for messy nights, and a clear protector that lets you use a good cloth without worrying about it. Each pick lists the sizes and shapes its maker sells, what it says about spills, and how to wash it.
1. Threadmade Continental Solid Texture Tablecloth – Washer, Dryer and Spill-Ready

The Continental is the kind of cloth you can leave on the table every day. It is woven from thick 100% polyester with a raised slub texture, so it reads as a woven fabric rather than a shiny party cover, and it comes in solid colors such as ivory, taupe and black that sit under any dinnerware.
What makes it an everyday cloth is the finish. Threadmade says the fabric has a water-, stain- and fade-resistant finish and wipes clean with a damp cloth or sponge, so a splash of salsa or a ring from a glass of horchata can be dealt with at the table instead of becoming a stain. When it does need washing, the listing says it is machine washable and dryer-safe on low, with a warm iron as needed. The hemmed edges are meant to prevent fraying.
Sizes run from 60 x 84 inches to 60 x 144 inches, including a 60 x 84-inch oval, which covers most four- to ten-seat tables. Matching napkins and a table pad are sold separately.
Why we like it
- Water-, stain- and fade-resistant finish, per the maker
- Machine washable and dryer-safe
- Rectangle and oval sizes up to 144 inches long
- Textured weave looks like a fabric cloth, not plastic
Key specifications
| Product | Continental Solid Texture, Ivory, 60 x 120 in (194590065706) |
|---|---|
| Material | 100% polyester |
| Sizes offered | 60 x 84, 60 x 102, 60 x 120, 60 x 144 in; 60 x 84 in oval |

| Machine-washable | Yes; tumble dry low |
| Shape options | Rectangle, oval |
| Ironing | Warm iron as needed |
Why we recommend it
It suits a family table that gets used three times a day and needs a cloth that survives both spills and the laundry without fuss.
Skip it if you want the feel of natural fiber; polyester does not soften or drape like linen.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Spill-resistant finish for daily use
- Goes in the dryer
- Wide range of lengths
Cons
- No round size found
- Some colors and sizes show limited stock
- Synthetic feel
2. Solino Home 100% Linen Tablecloth – Pure Linen That Softens with Washing

If the table is the center of a holiday, linen is the cloth to put on it. Solino Home makes this one from 100% European linen, finished with a hemstitch, and says the fabric is certified by Masters of FLAX fibre and by OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The listing’s own wording is that pure linen “mellows with each washing” and needs minimal care.
Linen has a slightly crumpled, relaxed look, and Solino is upfront that wrinkles and small variations in color and texture are part of the fabric. You can machine wash it, iron it on low, or steam it for a crisp look. It does not have a stain-resistant finish, so treat spills as you would on any good fabric: blot quickly and wash soon.
The 60 x 108-inch size shown here is, according to Solino, usually recommended for six- to eight-seat tables. The natural color is also sold at 60 x 90 and 60 x 144 inches, with white and ivory versions at 60 x 120 and 60 x 132 inches. Solino’s own sizing guide recommends a 6- to 8-inch drop for casual meals and 8 to 15 inches for formal ones.
Why we like it
- 100% European linen, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified
- Machine washable; softens with each wash, per Solino
- Lengths from 90 to 144 inches
- Maker publishes a clear sizing guide

Why we recommend it
It suits anyone who wants a natural-fiber cloth for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve tamales or a Día de Muertos dinner, and is happy with a relaxed, slightly wrinkled look.
Skip it if your table sees daily spills and you want to wipe them off rather than wash them out.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Pure linen at several lengths
- Machine washable
- Certified fabric
Cons
- No stain-resistant finish
- Wrinkles by nature
- Round sizes hard to find in stock
3. Elrene Monterey Flannel-Backed Vinyl Tablecloth – Wipes Clean, Stays Put

Vinyl is the modern version of the oilcloth you see on kitchen tables and fondas all over Mexico, and it is the easiest cloth to live with when the table doubles as a homework desk. Elrene’s Monterey has a linen-look crosshatch print on a thick vinyl face, so it looks less like plastic than most vinyl cloths, with a polyester flannel backing underneath.
Elrene says the vinyl is 100% waterproof and spill-proof and wipes clean with a damp cloth or sponge. The flannel back holds the cloth in place on the table and adds durability, and the edges are hemmed. Creases from the package can be released by steaming the flannel side. The listing does not say the cloth can go in a washing machine, so plan on wiping it rather than laundering it.
The Monterey line is sold in rectangle sizes including 52 x 70, 60 x 84 and 60 x 120 inches, and Elrene says the collection comes in round, square, rectangle and oval shapes. Colors include sage, blue, ivory, taupe and brick. Elrene has been making home textiles since 1922, according to the listing.
Why we like it
- Waterproof, spill-proof vinyl face, per Elrene
- Flannel backing keeps it from sliding
- Linen-texture print looks softer than plain vinyl
- Round, square, rectangle and oval shapes in the line
Key specifications

| Shape options | Round, square, rectangle, oval (per Elrene) |
| Ironing | Steam the flannel side to release creases |
Why we recommend it
It suits a kitchen table with small children, a craft table, or a patio table where food and weather both happen.
Skip it if you want a cloth that drapes softly or goes in the washer; vinyl is stiffer and is cleaned by wiping.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Spills wipe off
- Non-slip flannel back
- Many shapes and colors
Cons
- Not stated as machine washable
- Package creases need steaming
- Stiffer drape than fabric

4. Benson Mills Millennium Fabric Tablecloth – Cotton-Blend Texture for Every Day

Benson Mills is one of the most familiar tablecloth names on Amazon, and the Millennium is its plain, textured everyday cloth. It is woven from 57% polyester and 43% cotton, which gives it more of a cotton hand than an all-polyester cloth while keeping some of polyester’s easy care. Benson Mills describes it as suitable for everyday use or formal dining.
The care instructions are the usual for a blend: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, wash dark colors separately, non-chlorine bleach only, tumble dry low and remove promptly, and iron lightly if needed. Benson Mills does not claim a stain-resistant finish for this cloth, so it behaves more like cotton when something spills.
One detail worth knowing: Benson Mills says its rectangular sizes are cut as a true rectangle with four sharp corners, so the corners line up with the table edges on both rectangular and oblong tables. Sizes include 52 x 70, 60 x 84, 60 x 104 and 60 x 140 inches, in natural, red and chambray blue. Matching napkins are sold separately.
Why we like it
- Polyester-cotton blend with a woven texture
- Machine washable and dryer-safe on low
- True-rectangle cut lines up with table corners
- Four lengths, matching napkins available
Key specifications

| Shape options | Rectangle |
| Ironing | Lightly iron if necessary |
Why we recommend it
It suits a household that wants a soft, plain cloth for daily meals and is happy to wash it once a week.
Skip it if spills are constant; there is no stain-resistant finish, so a cloth like the Threadmade or a vinyl will be easier.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Cotton-rich feel
- Easy laundering
- Square corners on rectangles
Cons
- No stain finish stated
- Rectangle only
- Few colors
5. Urban Villa Salsa Stripes Cotton Tablecloth – Bright All-Cotton Stripes

Urban Villa makes 100% cotton tablecloths and napkins, and this one comes in a red multicolor stripe the company calls Salsa Stripes. It is a cheerful, casual cloth for a weeknight taco table or a backyard birthday, and it is plain cotton, which many cooks prefer for its feel and because it takes a hot wash.
Urban Villa describes the fabric as soft and absorbent, says it is lint-free with minimal shrinkage, and says the colors do not fade after multiple washes. It also says the cloth can be used straight out of the dryer. There is no water- or stain-resistant finish; cotton absorbs spills rather than beading them up, so blot and wash.
The Salsa Stripes cloth shown is 60 x 102 inches, a common size for a six-seat rectangle table. The same Urban Villa cotton cloth is sold in white at 60 x 84, 60 x 102 and 60 x 120 inches, and the company sells matching cotton napkins in sets of 12.
Why we like it
- 100% cotton
- Minimal shrinkage and no color fade claimed by the maker
- Bright stripe suits casual dinners
- Matching cotton napkins available

- Festive pattern
- Dryer-friendly, per the maker
Cons
- Absorbs spills
- One size found for this pattern
- Care details are thin
6. Hiasan Checkered Tablecloth – Spill-Proof Gingham for Patio Tables

A checkered cloth is the classic picnic and cantina look, and Hiasan’s is made from polyester rather than cotton, which is what lets it resist spills. Hiasan calls the fabric waterproof and spill-proof, with fade and tear resistance, and says liquids, even wine, can be wiped off quickly with a wet cloth or napkin.
That makes it a good outdoor cloth for the patio, where you might carry out a tray of drinks and a bowl of chips and salsa and leave the cloth out through the afternoon. Hiasan says it also protects the table from scratches and sun. It is machine washable; the maker says not to use bleach.
The black-and-white check here is 60 x 120 inches. Hiasan sells the same check in royal blue, navy and red, at 60 x 102 and 60 x 120 inches, in 60 x 84-inch two-packs, and as a 60-inch round, so it covers most picnic, dining and folding tables.
Why we like it
- Waterproof, spill-proof polyester, per Hiasan
- Machine washable
- Rectangle and round sizes
- Several check colors
Key specifications
| Product | Checkered Tablecloth, Black and White, 60 x 120 in (KYUSFGTC60120001) |

Skip it if you want a natural-fiber gingham; this is polyester.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Wipes clean
- Round option
- Washable
Cons
- Synthetic feel
- No bleach
- Pattern will not suit formal tables

7. Lenox French Perle Solid Tablecloth – Lace-Trimmed for Formal Dinners

Lenox is better known for china, and its French Perle tablecloth is designed to sit under the French Perle dinnerware collection. The solid cloth has a crochet-lace bobble trim around the edge and comes in soft colors such as ice blue, natural, periwinkle and dove.
It is made from 100% wrinkle-resistant polyester, which Lenox says is for easy care and long-lasting use. That combination, a dressy trim on an easy fabric, is what makes it worth a look for a holiday table that you do not want to spend an hour ironing. The listing does not give washing instructions or a stain-resistant finish, so check the care label when it arrives.
Sizes run from 52 x 70 to 60 x 120 inches, with 60 x 84 and 60 x 102 between, plus a 70-inch round. A related French Perle embroidered cloth is an 80% polyester, 20% linen blend that Lenox says is machine washable.
Why we like it
- Wrinkle-resistant polyester, per Lenox
- Crochet-lace bobble trim
- Rectangle sizes and a 70-inch round
- Coordinates with Lenox French Perle dinnerware
Key specifications

8. Utopia Kitchen Polyester Tablecloth, 2-Pack – Two Cloths for Parties

When you need to cover a folding table for a posada, a graduation or a birthday, a plain white polyester cloth does the job, and Utopia Kitchen sells two in one pack. These are 60 x 102 inches, which fits a standard six-foot folding table with a short drop, and Utopia also makes 52 x 70, 60 x 84 and an extra-large 90 x 132-inch size.
Utopia describes the polyester as stain-resistant, saying it holds off liquids and marks from wine, coffee and sauces, and as wrinkle-free. The care instructions are specific: machine wash in cold water, do not tumble dry or dry clean, and use non-chlorine bleach only on white cloths.
It is a simple cloth without the texture or weight of the Threadmade, but having two on hand means one can be in the wash while the other is on the table, and it is an easy base layer under a colorful runner or a sarape.
Why we like it
- Two tablecloths per pack
- Stain-resistant polyester, per Utopia
- Sizes from 52 x 70 up to 90 x 132 inches
- Clear care instructions

Skip it if you want a cloth that looks substantial on its own; this is a thin, plain polyester.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Two per pack
- Extra-large size available
- Stain resistance claimed
Cons
- No tumble drying
- Plain look
- No round size found
9. Benson Mills Clear Plastic Tablecloth Protector – Shields a Good Cloth

Not a tablecloth in the usual sense, but the answer for anyone who owns a good linen or a hand-embroidered Mexican cloth and wants to use it every day. Benson Mills’ protector is a clear, heavy-duty PVC sheet with a sewn edge that lies over the fabric, so the pattern shows through while the spills stay on top.
Benson Mills says it is spill-proof against water, oil and other liquids and wipes clean with a damp cloth. It can also be used alone to protect a wood table from spills and scratches, and the company says it can be cut to size for a custom table. Package wrinkles can be relaxed with a hair dryer on the hot setting, according to the listing.
It comes in a long list of sizes: 54 x 54, 54 x 70, 60 x 84, 60 x 108, 60 x 124 and 60 x 144 inches, 60- and 70-inch rounds, and wide 70 x 90, 70 x 108 and 70 x 126 inches. Match the protector to the tabletop, not the cloth, so the fabric’s drop still hangs free.
Why we like it
- Clear PVC lets the cloth underneath show
- Water- and oil-proof; wipes clean, per Benson Mills
- Rectangle, square, round and wide sizes
- Can be cut to fit
Key specifications
| Product | Clear Plastic Tablecloth Protector, 60 x 84 in (3458) |

| Machine-washable | No; wipe clean |
| Shape options | Square, rectangle, round |
| Ironing | No; hair dryer on hot to relax wrinkles |
Why we recommend it
It suits anyone with a cloth too good to stain, or a wood table that needs protecting under everyday meals.
Skip it if you dislike the look and feel of plastic on the table; it is clear, but it is still vinyl.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Protects linens and wood
- Widest size range here
- Cut to size
Cons
- Plastic feel
- Arrives creased
- Keep hot dishes on a trivet
How to size a tablecloth: the drop
The single most common tablecloth mistake is buying by the number of seats rather than by the table. Measure the tabletop, then decide how far you want the cloth to hang over the edge. That overhang is called the drop.
Solino Home’s sizing guide gives the rule most makers follow. For casual meals, a drop of 6 to 8 inches; for formal settings, a longer drop of 8 to 15 inches. To find the size you need, add twice the drop to both the length and the width of a rectangular table. Solino’s own example: a 74 x 44-inch table with an 8-inch drop needs a 90 x 60-inch cloth. For a round table, add twice the drop to the diameter, so a 50-inch round table with a 10-inch drop needs a 70-inch round cloth. If the exact size is not sold, Solino says to size up.
Three practical points from a dining room’s point of view:
- Keep the drop above the chair seats on an everyday table. A long drop looks elegant but gathers on laps and gets pulled when someone stands up quickly.
- Most fabric cloths are 60 inches wide, which suits tables about 36 to 48 inches wide. A wider farmhouse table needs a 70-inch-wide cloth, which is rarer; Benson Mills’ clear protector and Utopia’s 90 x 132-inch cloth are among the wider options here.
- Oval tables take an oval cloth or a rectangle; a rectangular cloth on an oval table hangs longer at the corners.

Linen, cotton, polyester or vinyl: choosing a tablecloth material
Linen
The most beautiful and the most work. Linen drapes well, softens with washing and looks right on a holiday table, but it wrinkles and has no stain finish. Buy it if you enjoy the ritual of a laid table and do not mind laundering.
Cotton and cotton blends
Soft and absorbent, and plain cotton takes a hot wash. Absorbent also means a spill soaks in, so cotton suits households that wash the cloth often. A polyester-cotton blend like the Benson Mills Millennium keeps much of the cotton feel and is easier to iron.
Treated polyester
The everyday workhorse. Makers such as Threadmade, Hiasan and Utopia sell polyester with a water- or stain-resistant finish, so many spills bead up and can be wiped before they set. Polyester also resists wrinkles. It does not feel like linen, but it is the easiest fabric cloth to keep on the table all week.
Vinyl and oilcloth
Wipe-clean and waterproof. Flannel-backed vinyl like the Elrene grips the table and protects it, and it is the closest thing on Amazon to the oilcloth that covers kitchen tables in much of Mexico. It is stiffer, and it is cleaned with a damp cloth rather than a washing machine.
How to choose a tablecloth for the way you eat
How often it stays on the table. A cloth that lives on the table every day should be stain-resistant polyester or wipe-clean vinyl. A cloth that comes out for holidays can be linen or cotton.
Who sits at it. Small children, crafts and homework argue for vinyl, or a clear protector over fabric.
Care you will actually do. Read the care line before buying. Some polyesters go in the dryer (Threadmade, Benson Mills); others should not be tumble dried (Utopia). Vinyl is wiped, not washed.
Size and shape. Measure first, then work out the drop as above. Check that your shape, round, oval or square, is sold in the color you want; many lines are rectangle only.
Color. White and ivory look formal and show stains; mid-tones like taupe, sage and natural hide them. A red or striped cloth suits a casual taco night; a black cloth makes bright Día de Muertos marigolds and papel picado stand out.
Dressing the table for a family dinner or Día de Muertos
Start with the cloth, then build up. A plain, stain-resistant base such as the Threadmade or Utopia lets you add color with a runner, a sarape or a smaller embroidered cloth on top. For a Día de Muertos gathering, many families use the table for a meal and keep the altar, with its marigolds, candles and pan de muerto, on a separate table; a cloth that can take candle wax and a dropped mug of champurrado earns its place on both. Our guide to Día de Muertos food explains what usually goes on that table.
For a crowd, protect the cloth where the food sits. Set hot dishes on a trivet, put the salsa and guacamole in a chip and dip bowl instead of loose bowls, and keep a stack of towels nearby; our dish towels guide covers the ones that soak up a spill fastest. If you are setting up a buffet for a party, our taco bar supplies guide walks through the rest of the table, and Mexican food for a group covers how much to serve.

How we picked these nine tablecloths
We looked at linen, cotton, cotton-blend, polyester and vinyl tablecloths from Threadmade, Elrene, Solino Home, Benson Mills, Bardwil, Now Designs, Lenox, Urban Villa, Hiasan, Utopia Kitchen and others, and kept only those showing as in stock on Amazon when we checked. Specifications, materials and care instructions come from the Amazon listings; sizing advice comes from Solino Home’s published sizing guide. We avoided listings with no identifiable maker or with photos that looked like computer renders.
Bardwil and most Now Designs cloths showed limited stock, and Solino’s cotton hemstitch and round linen cloths did as well, so they are not included. We did not read a Wirecutter, America’s Test Kitchen or Serious Eats tablecloth review for this guide, and we have not used these tablecloths ourselves; this is a guide to what the makers state and what a working dining room looks for.
Tablecloth questions, answered
What is the best tablecloth for everyday use?
A treated polyester cloth with a stated stain- or water-resistant finish that can go in the washer, such as the Threadmade Continental. If the table sees heavy daily mess, a flannel-backed vinyl like the Elrene Monterey is easier still.
What is the most durable tablecloth material?
For resisting stains and wrinkles, polyester; for resisting spills completely, vinyl. Linen is strong but needs more care to keep looking good.
Are white tablecloths a good idea for a family table?
White looks crisp and can be bleached if it is cotton or a white polyester whose maker allows non-chlorine bleach, as Utopia does. It also shows every drip of salsa. Ivory, taupe or natural hide stains better for daily use.
Which tablecloth brands are worth knowing?
Benson Mills, Elrene and Threadmade cover everyday fabric and vinyl cloths, Solino Home specializes in linen, Lenox makes cloths to match its dinnerware, and Hiasan and Utopia Kitchen sell simple polyester cloths in many sizes.
How do I get wrinkles out of a tablecloth?
Follow the maker: Solino suggests a low iron or steam for linen, Elrene says to steam the flannel back of its vinyl, and Benson Mills suggests a hair dryer on its clear protector. Polyester cloths often relax if you take them out of the dryer promptly.
