Tablecloth vs Placemats: Which to Use on Your Dining Table

Tablecloth vs placemats: coverage, sizing, cleanup, laundry, heat and looks, which most homes should start with, and two picks for each side.

A tablecloth and a set of placemats do the same basic job. They sit between your plates and your table and take the drips, crumbs and hot bowls so the wood does not. They go about it in very different ways, though. A tablecloth covers everything and has to fit the table. Placemats cover only each seat and come off one at a time.

Our restaurant clears and resets tables all day, from breakfast chilaquiles to a late plate of enchiladas, so the question of what is easiest to wipe, wash and put back is a practical one for us. This guide compares tablecloths and placemats on coverage, sizing, cleanup, laundry, heat, looks and storage, says which most homes should start with, and names two picks for each side.

Quick verdict: tablecloth or placemats?

For most everyday tables, placemats are the easier choice. They are small, they go in a drawer, a messy one can be wiped or washed on its own, and you do not need to measure your table to buy them. Choose a tablecloth when you want the whole table covered: for a worn or mismatched table, a holiday meal, a long buffet, or a dressier look. Many homes end up with both, using placemats on weeknights and a cloth when guests come. If you want only one thing that wipes clean, a woven vinyl placemat set is the lowest-effort option.

The table below sums up the differences. The sections after it explain each one and say where the details come from.

Tablecloth vs placemats, side by side

  Tablecloth Placemats
What it covers The whole table top, plus a drop over the edges One place setting each, about 13 x 19 or 14 x 19 inches on our picks
Sizing Must match the table: table size plus twice the drop One size fits almost any table
After a spill Often the whole cloth goes in the wash Only the mat that got dirty; vinyl wipes clean
Laundry A large item; cotton and polyester cloths machine wash Cloth mats machine wash; woven vinyl wipes with soap and water
Hides the table Yes, all of it No; the table shows between the mats
Mood Usually reads as more formal Usually reads as everyday
Storage Folded on a shelf; may need pressing Flat in a drawer

Coverage: the whole table or each seat

This is the real difference, and most of the others follow from it. A tablecloth covers the full top and hangs over the edges. That protects the entire surface, including the middle of the table where serving dishes sit, and it hides the table completely. If your table is scratched, stained, mismatched or a folding table pressed into service for a party, a cloth turns it into one clean surface.

Placemats protect only where each person eats. That is where most crumbs and drips land, but serving bowls and the salsa dish in the middle sit on bare wood unless you add a runner or trivets. The upside is that the table itself stays on show. If you have a wood table you like looking at, placemats let it be seen.

Home-Ec 101 sums up the usual pattern: “Typically, placemats are for everyday use, while tablecloths are used in more formal settings.” The same article notes that placemats “are easy to clean and store and can help protect your tables from scratches.”

Sizing: a tablecloth has to fit

Placemats need no measuring. Our two picks are 13 x 19 inches and 14 x 19 inches, which is the common size for one place setting, and a set of four or six works on most rectangular or round tables. If your table is small or round, our placemats for round tables guide covers round mats that fit tighter spacing.

A tablecloth has to match the table. Solino Home, which sells linen tablecloths, explains the method plainly. The drop is how far the cloth hangs over the edge. Solino says “a standard drop for a casual table setting is between 6 and 8-inches,” and formal drops are “usually between 8 and 15-inches.” For a rectangular table, add twice the drop to both the length and the width: its example is a 74 x 44 inch table with an 8 inch drop, which needs a 60 x 90 inch cloth. For a round table, measure the diameter and add twice the drop.

So before buying a cloth, measure your table and decide how long a drop you want. A cloth that is too small looks skimpy; one that is far too long lands in laps. Our best tablecloths guide goes deeper into sizes and shapes.

Cleanup and laundry

After a meal, placemats are simply easier. A drip of mole on one mat means one mat to deal with. A woven vinyl mat such as Chilewich’s wipes clean with soap and water, according to the maker, and can be scrubbed with a soft brush for tougher messes. A cloth mat such as Now Designs’ Spectrum goes in the washing machine with the towels.

A tablecloth works differently. The whole cloth collects the meal, so one big spill or a few dinners of crumbs usually means washing the entire thing. That is not hard with the right fabric. Benson Mills says its Harper cloth is treated polyester that resists spills, machine washes on cold and tumble dries low. Urban Villa’s cotton cloth also machine washes. But it is a big item to wash, dry and fold, and a cotton cloth may want ironing before it goes back on the table.

As general kitchen sense, if a tablecloth goes on the table every day, buy two so one can be in the wash. With placemats, a set of six covers a family of four with spares.

Heat and protecting the table

Neither a tablecloth nor a thin placemat is a trivet. As general kitchen sense, put a hot comal, casserole or Dutch oven on a trivet or a folded towel, not straight on a cloth or mat.

For plates and bowls, both help. Chilewich says its woven placemats shield surfaces from heat, scratches and spills. Now Designs says its thick ribbed cotton gives tabletop protection from spills and scratches. A single-layer tablecloth is thinner than either, so it stops scratches and catches spills but does less against heat. A treated polyester cloth like the Benson Mills is sold as spill resistant, which buys time to wipe.

If you want full coverage and protection for a good table, a cloth with placemats on top gives both.

Looks, mood and occasions

A white or linen-look tablecloth reads as a special meal; it is what most people picture for Thanksgiving, a birthday dinner or a Día de Muertos table with candles and pan de muerto. A bright printed cloth reads as a party or a patio. Placemats read as a family table. That is a broad pattern rather than a rule, and plenty of dressy tables use placemats on a fine wood top.

The two also layer. A cloth with placemats on top gives a cloth’s look while the mats take the drips, and a table runner down the middle with placemats at each seat covers the serving area without a full cloth. Our table runners guide covers that middle option.

Choose a tablecloth if… choose placemats if…

Choose a tablecloth if your table is worn or you want to hide it, you host holidays and want one finished look, you are setting a long buffet or a folding table, or you like the softer feel of fabric across the whole table. Measure first and allow for the drop.

Choose placemats if you want the easiest daily cleanup, you have small children, your table is one you like to see, or you do not want to wash and fold a big cloth. Most households should start here and add one tablecloth for special meals.

Our tablecloth vs placemats picks

Two picks for each side. None repeats a product from our best placemats or best tablecloths roundups, which have more options in each material.

1. Benson Mills Harper Spillproof Tablecloth, 60 x 84 in – Treated Polyester That Machine Washes

Everyday tableclothBenson Mills Harper Tablecloth (60" x 84" Rectangular)

A 60 x 84 inch rectangular tablecloth in Benson Mills’ colorful Harper floral print. The maker says it is 100% treated polyester, “not vinyl, not oil-cloth, no felt backing,” and that it is spill resistant for indoor or outdoor use. Care is simple: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, tumble dry low, remove promptly and lightly iron if needed.

This is the kind of cloth that makes daily use realistic. The maker calls it spill resistant, which gives you time to blot a spill, and the whole cloth goes in the machine without special handling. Benson Mills says its rectangular sizes are cut as a true rectangle with four sharp corners, so they line up with the table edges.

Using Solino’s sizing rule, a 60 x 84 cloth gives an 8 inch drop on a table of about 44 x 68 inches. Benson Mills also makes a matching Harper runner, which is in our table runners guide; this is the full tablecloth.

2. Urban Villa 100% Cotton White Tablecloth, 60 x 84 in – A Plain Cloth for Guests and Holidays

Classic cotton tableclothUrban Villa White Tablecloth 60 X 84 Inches 100% Cotton Rectangular Table Cloth

A plain white rectangular tablecloth in 100% cotton, 60 x 84 inches. Urban Villa describes it as soft and absorbent and says it is lint free and holds up through repeated washing. It is the classic white cloth for a holiday meal or a birthday dinner, and the same listing comes in other sizes for longer tables.

Cotton is the material to pick if you want a cloth that feels like fabric rather than a coating. The trade-off is that cotton absorbs rather than repels. A spill of red salsa or wine soaks in, so treat it promptly. Cotton can also wrinkle, so as general kitchen sense plan on ironing a white cloth before a special meal, or pull it from the dryer promptly and lay it on the table while warm.

Urban Villa also makes the striped cotton cloth in our best tablecloths guide; this is a different, plain white model.

Why we like it

  • 100% cotton
  • Plain white suits any dishes

3. Chilewich Bamboo Woven Placemats, Set of 4 – Wipe Clean, Made in the USA

Wipe-clean placematsChilewich Bamboo Placemats Set of 4

Four 14 x 19 inch rectangular woven placemats in Chilewich’s Bamboo weave, shown here in Coconut. Chilewich says they are made in the USA with its TerraStrand yarns, which contain 25% renewable vegetable content, and that they resist stains and fading. They wipe clean with soap and water; for tougher messes, the maker suggests a soft-bristle brush or a brief soak before rinsing.

This is the lowest-effort way to protect a table. Nothing goes in the laundry, and a mat that took a splash of beans can be rinsed at the sink and back on the table in minutes. Chilewich also says the mats shield surfaces from heat, scratches and spills.

Chilewich’s Basketweave mat is the top pick in our placemats guide. This Bamboo set is a different weave from the same maker, sold by Chilewich itself, and also comes in round and oval shapes.

4. Now Designs Spectrum Ribbed Cotton Placemats, Set of 4 – Thick Cloth Mats That Machine Wash

Cloth placematsNow Designs Spectrum Placemats Ribbed Cotton

Four 19 x 13 inch placemats in 100% cotton with a thick-ply ribbed weave, shown in Chili Red. Now Designs says the thick construction gives tabletop protection from spills and scratches. Care is to spot clean between washes, then machine wash warm and lay flat to dry, with no bleach.

A cloth placemat gives the soft look of a tablecloth one seat at a time. A drip soaks in rather than beading, so these are better for a family that does laundry often than for one that wants to wipe and go. Their advantage over a full cloth is size: four mats wash with a load of kitchen towels, where a full tablecloth is a load of its own.

The deep red works well under white or blue-and-white plates and talavera-style serving dishes, and the line comes in many colors. The listing is sold by Amazon.com.

  • 100% cotton, thick ribbed weave
  • Machine washable

Tablecloth and placemat questions, answered

Is it better to use a tablecloth or placemats?

For everyday meals, placemats are usually easier: they wipe or wash one at a time and need no measuring. A tablecloth is better when you want to cover the whole table, hide wear, or set a more formal or holiday table.

Can you use placemats on top of a tablecloth?

Yes. Layering gives a cloth’s look while the mats take most of the drips, so the cloth stays clean longer. Keep the colors simple so the table does not look busy.

What size tablecloth do I need?

Measure your table and add twice the drop you want to both the length and width. Solino Home puts a casual drop at 6 to 8 inches and a formal drop at 8 to 15 inches.

Which is easier to keep clean with kids?

Wipe-clean woven vinyl placemats. A spill stays on one mat, and it rinses at the sink. A spill-resistant polyester tablecloth is the next best choice if you want full coverage. Our placemats for kids guide has more options.

Do placemats protect a table from heat?

They help with warm plates, and Chilewich says its mats shield surfaces from heat. As general kitchen sense, use a trivet for pans or dishes straight from the oven or stove.

Are tablecloths old-fashioned?

No. A cloth still sets the tone for a holiday or a big family meal, and a printed or linen cloth looks current on a casual table. It comes down to how much of the table you want covered and how much laundry you want to do.
