Beer can chicken is one of those backyard ideas that survives every argument about whether it works. Steven Raichlen, who wrote a book on it, admits he is “not sure honestly and objectively I could tell the difference blindfolded” between birds cooked over different beers. What everyone agrees on is that an upright chicken cooks with its skin exposed all round, and a tipped-over one is a mess.
That’s the case for a stand. Raichlen’s own advice is that “if you’re nervous about falling chicken, simply use a beer can chicken roaster.” This guide covers stands for the grill. For oven roasting, try our chicken roasting pan guide, and start with our grill tools guide for the rest of your kit.

Quick verdict: the best beer can chicken stand
For most cooks, the best beer can chicken stand is the Charbroil Folding Chicken Roaster: stainless steel, with stated room for a 12-ounce can, and it folds flat for storage. For a Weber grill, the non-stick Weber Deluxe Poultry Roaster is the tidier option. To cook two birds, the GrillPro 2-pack gives you a pair of stands.
The rest of the list covers a cast iron pan, a turkey-sized roaster and stands that don’t use a can at all.

Our picks for the best beer can chicken stand
Six of these eight hold a can or a liquid in some way, and we say plainly which two don’t. Where a listing leaves a detail out, the specifications say so.
1. Charbroil Folding Chicken Roaster – Holds a Can, Folds Flat

This is the classic form of the tool and hard to improve on. Charbroil’s rack is heavy-duty stainless steel, 8 inches tall, with room for a 12-ounce can inside and space for a typical-sized chicken. It keeps the bird upright on the grill, then folds for storage, which matters for something you may only use now and then.
Charbroil says it is easy to clean and dishwasher safe. The open frame leaves the can in view, and that makes it easy to check. It has no drip pan, so put a foil tray under it on an indirect fire.
Why we like it
- Stated room for a 12-ounce can
- Stainless steel
- Folds for storage
- Dishwasher safe
- Sold by Amazon at last check
Key specifications
| Model | 6784717 |
|---|---|
| Type | Folding wire rack with can space |
| Material | Stainless steel |
| Listed size | 8 inches tall |
| Bird size | Typical-sized chicken |
| Liquid | 12-ounce can |
| Care | Dishwasher safe |
Why we recommend it
This suits most home cooks, from a first attempt to a regular cook, on a gas or charcoal grill with the lid closed.
Skip it if you want a drip pan included or plan to do a large turkey. It’s sized for a chicken.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear can fit
- Stores flat
- Simple to clean
Cons
- No drip pan
- Not for large birds
2. Weber Deluxe Poultry Roaster – Non-Stick and Made for the Grill

Weber’s Deluxe roaster is the more finished option, with a non-stick ceramic coating and a shape that’s meant to go on a grill and come off cleanly. Weber says it infuses poultry with moisture and flavor, and that it fits all Weber full-size gas grills and 22.5-inch or larger charcoal grills. Listed dimensions are about 9.9 by 8.4 by 4.4 inches.
The short listing doesn’t describe the liquid holder, a capacity or a bird size, so check the photos if you want to know how it holds its liquid. A coating asks for gentler tools than bare steel does, so use a soft sponge.
Why we like it
- Non-stick ceramic coating
- Named fit for Weber gas and charcoal grills
- Sold by Amazon at last check
Key specifications
| Model | 6731 |
|---|---|
| Type | Poultry roaster with infusion |
| Material | Ceramic-coated (base not stated) |
| Listed size | About 9.9 x 8.4 x 4.4 inches |
| Bird size | Not stated |
| Liquid | Infuses, details not stated |
| Care | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose this if you own a Weber and want a roaster that matches, with easier release than a wire stand.
Skip it if you own a small charcoal grill. Weber names 22.5-inch and larger charcoal models.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Non-stick coating
- Clear fit for Weber grills
- From a major grill maker
Cons
- Thin listing
- Coating needs gentle cleaning
3. GrillPro 41331 Chrome Wire Chicken Roaster, 2-Pack – A Stable Ring for the Can

If one chicken doesn’t feed the table, this two-pack is the simple way to cook two. GrillPro’s stand is chrome wire, about 7.5 by 6.9 by 2.8 inches, with a ring that holds a 12-ounce beverage can. The listing calls it a stable platform for beer can chicken and says it accommodates most chickens.
GrillPro names most gas grills, charcoal grills, smokers and ovens. Chrome wire isn’t as durable as stainless, so clean it gently and replace it if the plating chips. Check that two birds will fit under your lid with air around them.
Why we like it
- Two stands in the pack
- Ring holds a 12-ounce can
- Works in grills, smokers and ovens
- Sold by Amazon at last check
Key specifications
| Model | 41331 |
|---|---|
| Type | Wire can stand |
| Material | Chrome-plated wire |
| Listed size | About 7.5 x 6.9 x 2.8 inches |
| Bird size | Most chickens |
| Liquid | 12-ounce can |
| Care | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
This is the one to buy for a crowd, or if you want one bird with beer and one with something else.
Skip it if you want stainless steel that will take years of scrubbing. Chrome plating is the weak spot.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Two for one purchase
- Ring steadies the can
- Wide list of cookers
Cons
- Chrome rather than stainless
- Low profile, so birds sit close to the grate
4. Amazon Basics Beer Can Chicken Holder – Crossbar and Lifting Handles

Moving a hot upright bird is the hardest part of this method, so handles earn their place. Amazon Basics builds them into this food-grade stainless steel stand, along with a bottom crossbar that keeps the can steady. Listed dimensions are about 8.1 by 6.7 by 3 inches.
The listing says it’s for grills and ovens and is dishwasher safe. It is Amazon’s own brand, so there is no grill maker behind it, but the construction it describes is sensible and there’s little else to get wrong on a stand like this.
Why we like it
- Built-in lifting handles
- Crossbar steadies the can
- Stainless steel, dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Model | LDCB021 |
|---|---|
| Type | Can stand with handles |
| Material | Food-grade stainless steel |
| Listed size | About 8.1 x 6.7 x 3 inches |
| Bird size | Not stated |
| Liquid | Beer can (size not stated) |
| Care | Dishwasher safe |
Why we recommend it
This suits a cook who worries about getting a hot bird off the grill in one piece.
Skip it if you want a stand that folds or has a drip pan. It does neither.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easy to lift
- Stable can position
- Sold by Amazon
Cons
- Bird size not stated
- No drip pan
5. Onlyfire Cast Iron Chicken Roaster with Pan – Roast Vegetables Under the Bird

This one combines the holder with an 11-inch cast iron pan, so drippings land on whatever you put below. Onlyfire, an Amazon-first brand, says the holder takes beer, wine, juice or other liquid, and that vegetables in the pan pick up the fat and juices. The overall length with handles is 13.4 inches and the holder is 3.5 inches high.
The listing says it’s dishwasher safe, which we’d ignore, because dishwashers strip cast iron seasoning. Hand wash, dry and oil it. Expect some weight too, though the listing doesn’t state it.
Why we like it
- 11-inch pan catches drippings
- Cast iron, pre-seasoned
- Side handles
- Works on grills, ovens and smokers
Key specifications
| Model | SKPJ-LZ10027CS1 |
|---|---|
| Type | Holder and pan in one |
| Material | Cast iron, pre-seasoned |
| Listed size | 11-inch pan, 13.4 inches with handles |
| Bird size | Not stated |
| Liquid | Beer, wine, juice in the holder |
| Care | We would hand wash, despite the listing |
Why we recommend it
Pick this for a one-pan dinner of bird and potatoes on a covered grill or in the oven.
Skip it if you want something light to store. Cast iron is heavy, and it needs drying and oiling.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Dinner in one pan
- Holds heat well
- No can needed
Cons
- Amazon-first brand
- Weight not stated; listing’s care advice is poor for iron
6. Charcoal Companion CC6302 Infusion Turkey Roaster – Beer-Can Style for Big Birds

A 12-ounce can can’t support a large turkey. Charcoal Companion’s roaster says it brings beer-can style roasting to larger poultry, with a liquid reservoir and moisture vents and an angled insert with braces for stability. It takes birds up to 18 pounds, the listing says.
It is a large piece of stainless steel, about 17.9 by 8.6 by 6.4 inches, with a wide base and sturdy handles, and it comes with a one-year maker’s warranty. Check your grill’s lid clearance, as an upright 18-pound bird is tall. Smallcountryshop was the seller at last check.
Why we like it
- Up to an 18-pound bird
- Liquid reservoir and moisture vents
- Wide base and handles
- One-year warranty
Key specifications
| Model | CC3124 (listing part number) |
|---|---|
| Type | Roaster with reservoir and insert |
| Material | Stainless steel |
| Listed size | 17.9 x 8.6 x 6.4 inches |
| Bird size | Up to 18 pounds |
| Liquid | Built-in reservoir |
| Care | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
This is for a Thanksgiving turkey on a large grill or smoker, or a whole big bird in the oven.
Skip it if you only cook chickens. It’s far more roaster than you need, and takes up a lot of storage.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Handles large birds
- No can needed
- Warranty stated
Cons
- Needs a tall lid
- Third-party seller at last check
7. Norpro 266 Deluxe Stainless Vertical Roaster – Vertical Roasting Without a Can

Norpro’s stand isn’t a can holder. It is a stainless frame that holds a bird upright over a drip pan, with liquids such as beer or broth going in the pan. The listing doesn’t say a pan is included, so plan on your own. It measures 8.75 by 7 by 7 inches, with a wide base, and holds small chickens, Cornish hens or small turkeys up to 8 pounds. It comes apart flat for storage.
Norpro lists ovens, grills and smokers, and it’s dishwasher safe. If you don’t care for cooking over a printed can, this gets you the upright position without one. Ignore the listing’s “healthier” language, since we can’t back it up. KART IT was the seller at last check.
Why we like it
- Up to 8 pounds
- Comes apart for flat storage
- Oven, grill and smoker use named
- Dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Model | 266 |
|---|---|
| Type | Vertical roaster, no can |
| Material | Stainless steel |
| Listed size | 8.75 x 7 x 7 inches |
| Bird size | Up to 8 pounds |
| Liquid | Liquid goes in your drip pan |
| Care | Dishwasher safe |
Why we recommend it
This suits a cook who wants the upright roast and doesn’t want a can involved at all.
Skip it if you want the classic can setup, since this doesn’t hold one.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No can required
- Stores flat
- Stated capacity
Cons
- Doesn’t hold a can
- Third-party seller at last check
8. Fox Run Non-Stick Vertical Chicken Roaster – A Small Stand for Small Birds

The smallest stand here is about 5.5 by 5.5 by 7.5 inches and weighs just a few ounces, which makes it easy to tuck into a drawer. Fox Run says it stands one bird upright for airflow on the grill, with fat dripping away, and it names chicken, small turkeys and even roasted garlic.
There is no can ring or liquid holder on the listing, so this is purely an upright stand. It is non-stick with hand-wash care, and Fox Run also asks you to dry and oil it after each use. The health wording on the listing isn’t something we would rely on.
Why we like it
- Compact and light
- Non-stick finish
- Sold by Amazon at last check
Key specifications
| Model | 5667 |
|---|---|
| Type | Vertical stand, no can |
| Material | Non-stick (base not stated) |
| Listed size | 5.5 x 5.5 x 7.5 inches |
| Bird size | One bird, size not stated |
| Liquid | None |
| Care | Hand wash, dry, oil |
Why we recommend it
Choose this for small chickens if storage space is tight and you don’t care about adding liquid.
Skip it if you want the beer can setup. This stand has no place for a can.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Small to store
- Simple
- Low weight
Cons
- No liquid holder
- Oiling after each use
How to choose a stand for your grill
A stand has one job, which is keeping a hot, slippery bird from falling over. Here is what affects that.
Base and stability
A wider base is harder to tip. Look for a ring or crossbar that stops the can from moving, as on the GrillPro and Amazon Basics stands. If a stand doesn’t hold a can steady, the bird relies on the can’s balance alone.
Can, reservoir or nothing
A can is the classic. A built-in reservoir, like Charcoal Companion’s, means you never heat a printed can, and it’s easier to fill with broth or juice. A plain vertical stand drops the liquid altogether. Raichlen doesn’t claim he could taste the difference between beers, so if the liquid is the part you don’t care about, a simple stand does the job. He says he has had no accidents with the can: “Never once have I had or heard of a serious mishap.”

Lid clearance
An upright bird is tall. Measure the height from your grate to the closed lid before you buy, and leave room above the bird for heat to move around. Small kettles and low-lid gas grills can run out of room, particularly with a turkey.
Material and care
Stainless is simple, and some of these stands go in the dishwasher. Chrome wire can chip. Coated stands want gentle cleaning. Cast iron takes hand washing, drying and oil, whatever a listing says.
Moving the bird
The can, the liquid and the frame are all very hot at the end of the cook. Use heat-rated gloves and a large platter, and let the bird rest before you take it off the stand. Handles help a great deal. Check for doneness in the thickest part of the thigh with a meat thermometer and go by USDA’s safe temperature for poultry, not by the time on a recipe.

How we picked these eight chicken stands
We searched Amazon for beer can chicken stands and vertical roasters sold new and in stock, from identifiable makers, with two Amazon-first brands on this page. Ceramic roasters, including Cook’s Choice, Kamado Joe and Big Green Egg, are out because they are glazed or may be and we did not find a maker statement on lead. Several others, such as Weber’s stainless roaster and Staub’s vertical roaster, showed low stock, and Mr. Bar-B-Q’s stand and Nordic Ware’s roaster already appear on our chicken roasting pan guide. We read Raichlen’s piece on the Barbecue Bible site for the quotes above.
We have not cooked on these stands, and we don’t claim to have. These picks rest on maker and listing details. We looked up each brand in the CPSC recall database and found no recall of any stand on this page.
Beer can chicken questions, answered
Does the beer actually make the chicken moister?
That’s disputed. Raichlen says beer can chicken “just tastes moister than most conventional roast chicken,” but when asked if steam is the reason, he answers only, “I like to think so.” Treat the moisture as a bonus at most, and rely on cooking the bird to temperature without going past it.

Do I need a stand, or can I use just a can?
A can alone works, with the bird’s legs forming a tripod, and Raichlen has done it for years. A stand is simply a safer way to keep it upright and lift it off the grill.
Can I use a chicken roaster for the grill in the oven?
Many yes. GrillPro, Amazon Basics, Norpro and Onlyfire all name ovens. Put a pan underneath to catch the fat.
What can I put in the can instead of beer?
Onlyfire suggests wine or juice, and Norpro names broth as well. Plain water with herbs also works. Raichlen’s point stands that you may not be able to taste the difference.
Will these stands hold a turkey?
Mostly not. The Charcoal Companion lists up to 18 pounds, the Norpro up to 8. A chicken stand under a large turkey can tip, so choose by stated capacity. Our turkey roasting pan guide covers the oven route.
Our final pick for an upright chicken
Buy the Charbroil Folding Roaster and cook one chicken on an indirect fire with the lid down. Judge it by the skin. Add a smoker box if you want more wood smoke, or see our smoker guide if you get serious about it.
And when you’d rather leave the bird to someone else, see the menu at Julia’s or call to order.
