Raw Meat, Heat and Washing: The Best Beeswax Wraps

Seven beeswax wraps and sets for cut limes, onions, cheese and bowls, with each maker's sizes, care, lifespan and the foods they should never touch.

Cheese, crackers and fruit: the kind of food a wrap is meant to cover.

Every Mexican kitchen ends the day with leftovers that are not quite leftovers: half an onion, a cut lime, a block of queso fresco with a corner gone, a bowl of salsa that did not get finished. They need covering, and most of them are the right shape for a wrap you press around with your hands. That is the job a beeswax wrap is made for.

The best beeswax wraps depend on what you cover most: small sheets for citrus and onion halves, large ones for bowls, a bag for bread. This guide covers seven wraps and sets from Bee’s Wrap, Honeybee Wrap, Akeeko and BeePure, with the wax blend, sizes, care and lifespan each maker states, and, just as important, what each maker says they should not touch.

Quick verdict: which beeswax wraps to buy

For most kitchens, the pick is the Bee’s Wrap 3-Pack Assorted: small, medium and large wraps made in Vermont from beeswax, organic plant oils and tree resin, with clear care rules from the maker. For a bigger sheet for wide bowls, choose the Honeybee Wrap 4-Pack; for bread, the Bee’s Wrap Bread Bags. Whatever you buy, keep wraps away from raw meat and hot food, as the makers and the University of California’s Master Food Preservers advise.

Below, five standouts side by side, then all seven reviewed in full.

Our picks for the best beeswax wraps

These seven cover the ways a kitchen uses wraps: mixed sets for everyday covering, a big set for a crowded fridge, a roll you cut to size, a sandwich wrap and bags for bread. Before you buy, think about what you cover most often. A kitchen that cuts limes and onions all day needs small sheets; one that covers bowls of salsa and beans needs large ones.

1. Bee’s Wrap 3-Pack Assorted, Honeycomb – Small, Medium and Large, Made in Vermont

Best overallBee's Wrap Beeswax Food Wraps

Bee’s Wrap is the brand most people mean when they say beeswax wrap, and this three-pack is its basic set. Each wrap is cotton coated with beeswax, organic plant oils and tree resin, and you shape it around food or over a bowl with the warmth of your hands. Bee’s Wrap makes them in Vermont.

The sizes match the jobs. Bee’s Wrap suggests the small for citrus, onions and avocados, which in our kind of kitchen means half a white onion, a cut lime or the half avocado left from the guacamole. The medium suits cheese, such as a block of queso fresco or Oaxaca. The large covers a bowl of pico de gallo or a pie dish. The listing does not give exact dimensions.

Care is simple and strict. Bee’s Wrap says to rinse in cool water, with mild dish soap if food sticks, and to air dry. Keep them away from hot water, ovens, microwaves and hot food, which melt the wax, and wait until food has cooled completely before wrapping it. The maker also says to avoid raw meat or fish. With regular use and proper care, Bee’s Wrap says a wrap lasts up to a year, and it can be composted at the end.

Why we like it

  • Three sizes for small cuts, cheese and bowls
  • Beeswax, organic plant oils and tree resin
  • Clear care and food rules from the maker
  • Made in Vermont

2. Honeybee Wrap 4-Pack, S, M, L, XL – An Extra-Large Sheet for Wide Bowls

Best for wide bowlsHONEYBEE WRAP Reusable Beeswax Wraps

Honeybee Wrap’s Kitchen Collection adds the one size the basic sets lack: an extra-large sheet, 17 by 15 inches, big enough for a wide bowl of beans or a platter. The other three are a small at 8 by 8 inches, a medium at 11 by 10 and a large at 14 by 14.

The cloth is GOTS-certified organic cotton infused with Australian beeswax, coconut oil, jojoba oil and tree gum resin. As with any wrap, you warm it in your hands and press it around the bowl or the food until it clings.

Honeybee Wrap’s care rules are short: wipe with cool soapy water, rinse and hang to dry. It says to avoid heat, raw meat and seafood. With simple care, the maker says each wrap lasts up to 12 months, and it can be composted after use.

Why we like it

  • Four sizes, up to 17 x 15 inches
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton
  • Stated food limits: no raw meat, seafood or heat
  • Up to 12 months, per the maker

  • Contains jojoba oil
  • Only one wrap of each size

3. Bee’s Wrap Beeswax Bread Bags, 2-Pack – A Drawstring Bag for a Whole Loaf

Best for breadBee's Wrap Beeswax Bread Bags

Wrapping a whole loaf in a flat sheet is fiddly. Bee’s Wrap’s bread bags solve it with a drawstring bag: an organic cotton outer layer lined with beeswax, organic plant oil and tree resin. Each bag measures 15 by 12 inches, and Bee’s Wrap says it fits most artisan loaves, sourdough and sandwich bread.

The maker’s claim is that the bag balances airflow and humidity to keep bread from drying out or molding too early, and keeps the crust and crumb as they should be. That is a natural home for the bolillos or telera rolls you bought for tortas, or a loaf of pan de muerto in season.

Like the wraps, the bags are hand washed and can be composted when they are worn out. The listing does not give a lifespan for the bags, and it is a bag, so it will not cover a bowl or wrap half an onion. Treat it as an add-on to a wrap set.

Why we like it

  • Drawstring bag, no folding
  • 15 x 12 inches, fits most loaves
  • Beeswax-lined organic cotton
  • Two bags in the pack

Key specifications

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Easy to close
  • Sized for a full loaf
  • Two bags

Cons

  • Bread only
  • No lifespan stated

4. Akeeko Beeswax Food Wraps, 9-Pack – Five Small Sheets for the Daily Cuts

Best big setAkeeko Reusable Beeswax Food Wraps - Assorted 9 Packs

A kitchen that cuts limes, onions and chiles all day goes through small wraps faster than big ones, and Akeeko’s set is weighted that way: five small (7 by 8 inches), two medium (10 by 11), one large (13 by 14) and one extra large (14 by 15). Akeeko says the small ones cover half an avocado, a lemon or a piece of cheese, and the extra large wraps a loaf or a big serving bowl.

The wraps are organic cotton with organic jojoba oil, beeswax and tree resin, coated in three layers. Akeeko says the fabric is GOTS certified and the wraps are certified to the European LFGB food-contact standard. The coating is deliberately a little sticky, and Akeeko notes that hot food, heavy pressing or very oily dishes can transfer a little wax.

Rinse in cool water with mild soap and air dry; keep the wraps away from heat and out of the dishwasher. Akeeko claims the coating lasts up to 50 percent longer than typical wraps but gives no time span. It does not mention raw meat, so follow the general advice and keep it away.

Why we like it

  • Nine wraps, five of them small
  • Exact sizes stated
  • LFGB and GOTS certifications listed
  • Maker warns about heat and oily food

Key specifications

Wrap set Akeeko, Abstract Curves
Wax (beeswax/plant) Beeswax, organic jojoba oil, tree resin
Sizes & count 9: 5 S 7×8, 2 M 10×11, 1 L 13×14, 1 XL 14×15 in
Care/washing (maker) Cool water, mild soap, air dry; no dishwasher
Life (as stated) No time given
Food limits (maker) Keep from heat; hot or oily food can pick up wax
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a busy kitchen that wants a wrap for every cut lime and onion without rationing them.

Skip it if you prefer a maker that states a lifespan and raw-meat guidance; Bee’s Wrap and Honeybee Wrap do both.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most wraps in one set
  • Plenty of small sizes
  • Certifications named

Cons

  • Contains jojoba oil
  • No lifespan or raw-meat note

5. BeePure Beeswax Food Wrap Roll, 15 x 80 in – Cut Exactly the Size You Need

Best cut-to-sizeBeePure Wraps Reusable Beeswax Food Wrap Roll - Extra Large 15 x 80 in (1

Fixed squares never quite fit an odd-shaped dish. BeePure sells its wrap as one roll, 15 by 80 inches, about 1,200 square inches, which you cut to whatever size the job needs: a long strip for a loaf, a big circle for a mixing bowl, a small square for a cut chile.

The cloth is organic cotton coated with beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil. BeePure, which describes itself as a small family brand from Hawaii, says to press and warm the wrap with your hands to form a seal, rinse it in cool water with mild soap and air dry it.

BeePure says it lasts for months with gentle care, and warns to keep it away from heat and hot water, which soften the wax. It does not give food limits beyond that, so keep it away from raw meat and hot food as the other makers advise.

Why we like it

  • About 1,200 square inches in one roll
  • Cut any shape or size
  • Simple cool-water care
  • Maker warns about heat

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook with unusual dishes, or one who wants to cut a few oversized sheets for big bowls.

Skip it if you do not want to cut and finish your own wraps; a pre-cut set is ready to use.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Any size you need
  • Large total area
  • Simple care

Cons

  • Vague lifespan
  • Contains jojoba oil

6. Bee’s Wrap Beeswax Sandwich Wrap, Honeycomb – A Button and Tie for Tortas

Best for packed lunchesBee's Wrap Beeswax Sandwich Wrap - Honeycomb

A single wrap that closes itself: Bee’s Wrap’s sandwich wrap is 13 by 13 inches, with a button and a tie that hold it shut once it is folded around the food. Bee’s Wrap designed it for packed lunches, which in a Mexican house means a torta on a bolillo, a cold burrito or a few quesadillas made in the morning.

It is the same material as the Bee’s Wrap sets, beeswax, organic plant oils and tree resin on cotton, made in Vermont. The rules are the same too. Let anything made on the comal cool completely before you wrap it, since Bee’s Wrap says not to wrap hot foods until they have cooled, and keep it away from raw meat or fish.

Hand wash it in cool water with mild soap and let it air dry before the next lunch. Bee’s Wrap says its wraps last up to a year with regular use and proper care.

Why we like it

  • Button and tie closure
  • 13 x 13 inches
  • Same materials as the Bee’s Wrap sets
  • Made in Vermont

Key specifications

Food limits (maker) Avoid raw meat or fish; cool hot food first
Made in Vermont, USA

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who packs a torta or burrito for lunch and wants it to stay closed in the bag.

Skip it if you want wraps for the fridge; one sandwich wrap does one job.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stays shut
  • Good lunch size
  • Clear maker guidance

Cons

  • Single wrap
  • Food must be cool first

7. Honeybee Wrap 7-Pack, Pastel Prints – Mini Wraps for Lime and Chile Halves

Best for small cutsHONEYBEE WRAP Reusable Beeswax Wraps for Food

Honeybee Wrap’s seven-pack includes the smallest wraps here: two minis at 5 by 5 inches. That is the right size for half a lime, a halved jalapeño or the end of a tomato, the small cuts that sit on a cutting board through a day of cooking. The rest of the set is two small (8 by 8 inches), two medium (11 by 10) and one large (14 by 14).

The materials match Honeybee Wrap’s four-pack: GOTS-certified organic cotton with Australian beeswax, coconut oil, jojoba oil and tree gum resin. The listing says this set is made in Australia.

Care and limits are the same as well. Wipe with cool soapy water, rinse and hang to dry, and avoid heat, raw meat and seafood. Honeybee Wrap says each wrap lasts up to 12 months with simple care.

Why we like it

How to choose beeswax wraps for a Mexican kitchen

What they can and cannot cover. This matters more than the print. Bee’s Wrap says to avoid raw meat or fish, and Honeybee Wrap says to avoid raw meat and seafood. The University of California’s San Joaquin Master Food Preservers write that beeswax wraps are not recommended for raw meat or hot items, because heat can melt the wax. Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) adds that reusable cloths should not touch raw food from animals, since germs can pass to other foods if the cloth is not cleaned properly. So marinating carne asada, raw chicken and shrimp go in a sealed container, not a wrap.

Heat. A wrap cannot go on hot food, in the microwave or in hot water. Bee’s Wrap says heat melts the wax and to let food cool completely first. Tortillas straight off the comal, a pot of beans still steaming, a bowl of rice just made: let them cool, then cover them.

Avocado skins and cut lemon pieces on a stained wooden cutting board with two knives
Cut citrus and avocado halves are what the smallest wraps are for.

Sizes. Small wraps do the most work in a Mexican kitchen. Bee’s Wrap suggests its small size for citrus, onions and avocados, and its medium for cheese, which covers queso fresco and cotija. Count how many cut limes and onion halves you keep on a busy day, and buy a set with enough small sheets. Add a large or extra-large one for bowls of salsa or beans.

What is in the wax. All the wraps here combine beeswax with a resin and an oil. The BfR does not recommend jojoba oil in beeswax cloths until the studies needed for a health risk assessment are available, and it notes that dyed fabrics could pass dye constituents to food. Bee’s Wrap lists organic plant oils without naming jojoba; Honeybee Wrap, Akeeko and BeePure list jojoba oil. The UC Master Food Preservers suggest checking with the maker that the materials meet food-contact standards; Akeeko is the only maker here that names one, the European LFGB.

Care and lifespan. Every maker here says cool water and mild soap, then air dry. Bee’s Wrap says a wrap lasts up to a year, and Honeybee Wrap says up to 12 months; a wrap is worn out, according to Bee’s Wrap, when it no longer sticks to itself. If you would rather not use beeswax, Bee’s Wrap says it makes vegan wraps with candelilla wax, but we could not find them in stock on Amazon, so they are not reviewed here.

How we chose these seven beeswax wraps

We looked at what a Mexican kitchen actually covers, from cut limes and onions to queso fresco and bowls of salsa, and chose real, branded wraps sold on Amazon in the United States in the sizes those jobs need. We checked that each was in stock when we wrote this, took the materials, sizes, care, lifespan and food limits from each maker’s listing or website, and wrote “not stated” where a maker gives no detail. Food-safety limits come from the makers, the University of California’s Master Food Preservers and Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. Etee, Abeego, Z Wraps and Bee’s Wrap’s vegan wraps were not available on Amazon when we checked, and we passed over unbranded multi-packs and a soy-wax set whose listing contradicted itself. We have not used these products ourselves.

Beeswax wrap questions, answered

What is the best beeswax wrap brand?

Bee’s Wrap is our pick for most kitchens: wraps made in Vermont, with clear guidance from the maker on care, lifespan and the foods to avoid. Honeybee Wrap is the alternative if you want stated sizes and an extra-large sheet.

Can beeswax wraps be used for raw meat?

No. Bee’s Wrap and Honeybee Wrap both say to avoid raw meat and fish or seafood, and the University of California’s Master Food Preservers say beeswax wraps are not recommended for raw meat. Use a sealed container instead.

Can you wrap cheese in beeswax wraps?

Yes. Bee’s Wrap suggests its medium wrap for cheese, and several other makers list cheese as a use. A block of queso fresco or cotija is a good fit.

How do you wash beeswax wraps?

In cool water with mild dish soap, then air dry. Never use hot water, the dishwasher or the microwave, which every maker here says will damage the wax.

What is the best beeswax for making your own wraps?

We have not covered making wraps here. If you do, the UC Master Food Preservers advise beeswax free from additives and food-grade resin, and the BfR advises beeswax that meets food-additive requirements.
