A Mexican kitchen goes through dry goods by the bag: all-purpose flour for tortillas de harina, masa harina for tortillas, tamales and gorditas, sugar for pan dulce and champurrado. Left in their paper bags, they pick up humidity, spill across the shelf and, sooner or later, invite pantry bugs.
This guide covers eight flour containers, from the square polypropylene tubs restaurant kitchens use to push-button canisters, a French glass jar and a stainless steel clamp canister. We used the makers’ specifications, the Amazon listings, America’s Test Kitchen’s review of dry storage containers and its guidance on flour storage, and Oregon State University Extension’s advice on pantry pests.

Quick verdict: which flour container to buy
The best flour container for most kitchens is the Cambro 6-Quart Square Container, a co-winner in America’s Test Kitchen’s dry storage review: it “easily fits a whole 5-pound bag of flour” and its wide opening lets you dip and level a measuring cup. If a tight seal matters most, the ProKeeper+ 4-Quart Flour Keeper, ATK’s other co-winner, was the only container that stayed sealed when dropped. For one-handed opening, the OXO POP 4.4-Quart Container; on a budget with a built-in leveler, the PrepSolutions Flour Keeper; and for glass, the Le Parfait 3-Liter Screw Top Jar.
Measuring straight from the container works best with good tools: our guides to measuring cups and kitchen scales cover both ways of measuring flour.

Our picks for the best flour container
These eight cover the real choices: wide restaurant-style tubs, latching canisters with gaskets, push-button lids, glass and stainless steel, single containers and a matched pair for flour and masa harina. Each pick explains who it suits and gives one honest reason to skip it.
1. Cambro 6-Quart Square Container, 2-Pack – Room to Scoop and Level

Cambro’s square containers are the tubs you see on restaurant shelves, and America’s Test Kitchen made the CamSquares Classic 6-quart translucent container a co-winner of its dry storage review. ATK found the wide opening lets you “dip dry measuring cups in and level their contents,” and that it “easily fits a whole 5-pound bag of flour.”
That matters more than any lid feature. A container you cannot get a measuring cup into is one you end up pouring or spooning from. Here, the whole bag goes in with room above it, and there is space to sweep the top of the cup flat.
This listing is a two-pack of the translucent version, with covers that snap on: one for flour, one for masa harina or sugar. Cambro describes the material as resistant to stains, says the square shape makes the most of shelf space, and lists the containers as safe in the refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher, with NSF approval and a three-year pro-rated guarantee. Cambro sells these covers as snap-on rather than airtight, so in a humid kitchen keep the lid pressed down all the way around.
Why we like it
- ATK co-winner, Highly Recommended
- Fits a whole 5-pound bag, per ATK
- Wide opening for scooping and leveling
- Two containers in the pack
Key specifications
| Container | Cambro translucent square, 6 qt (6SFSPPSW2190) |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | Not stated by Cambro; a 5-lb bag fit with room to spare, per ATK |
| Volume | 6 qt each, 2 containers |
| Material | Translucent polypropylene |
| Seal type | Snap-on cover; not sold as airtight |
| Scoop/leveler | None; wide opening for a measuring cup |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | Yes, per ATK |
| Dishwasher | Yes (maker) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you bake or make tortillas often and want to measure straight from the container, the way restaurant kitchens do.
Skip it if you want a canister that looks at home on the counter; these are plain, utilitarian tubs.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easiest scooping in ATK’s review
- Holds a whole bag
- Two in a pack
Cons
- Lid not sold as airtight
- Utilitarian look
- Takes more shelf depth than a canister
2. ProKeeper+ 4-Quart Flour Keeper – The Seal That Survived a Drop

Progressive’s ProKeeper+ flour container was America’s Test Kitchen’s other co-winner, and the reason is its seal: it “was the only container in our lineup that stayed tightly sealed when it was dropped 1.5 feet.” A flour container knocked off a shelf usually means a kitchen covered in white powder, so that is a real test.
Progressive says the 4-quart container fits a standard 5-pound bag of flour. It has a silicone seal, stainless steel hinges and a latch, plus measurement markings up to 16 cups so you can see how much is left. This listing is the grey two-piece version: the container comes with a removable magnetic leveling bar that clips across the bin and a ½-cup scoop, both of which store under the lid.
ATK’s complaint was cleaning: flour gets caught in the hinged lid and gasket. This listing does not say whether the container is dishwasher safe, so check Progressive’s care instructions before putting it in the machine.
Why we like it
- ATK co-winner; stayed sealed when dropped
- Fits a 5-pound bag, per Progressive
- Silicone seal with latch
- Magnetic leveling bar and ½-cup scoop included
Key specifications
| Container | ProKeeper+ 4-quart flour keeper, 2-piece set (PKS-2) |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | A standard 5-lb bag |
| Volume | 4 qt |
| Material | Clear plastic, stainless steel hinges |
| Seal type | Silicone seal, hinged lid, latch; airtight (maker) |
| Scoop/leveler | Magnetic leveling bar and ½-cup scoop (maker) |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | Yes (maker) |
| Dishwasher | Not stated in this listing |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want the most secure seal, for a humid Houston summer or a shelf where things get knocked over.
Skip it if cleaning gaskets bothers you; ATK found flour collects in the hinge and seal.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Best seal in ATK’s drop test
- Holds a 5-lb bag
- Fill markings
Cons
- Flour gets caught in the hinge and gasket, per ATK
- Dishwasher safety not stated in this listing

3. OXO POP 4.4-Quart Container – One-Push Seal, Neat Stacking

OXO’s POP containers are the canisters people picture when they think of an organized pantry. The 4.4-quart Big Square Medium size is the one OXO says holds around 5 pounds of flour, sugar or pasta. Press the button on the lid and it seals; press again and the button becomes a handle to lift the lid off, all with one hand.
OXO lists the container as airtight, stackable and completely dishwasher-safe, with a fill line and curved corners to help with pouring. The square shape lines up neatly on a shelf, and the POP range comes in many sizes if you want matching containers for sugar, rice and dried beans.
America’s Test Kitchen tested a different, taller POP container, the 6-quart Big Square Tall, and rated it Recommended with Reservations: the lid “kept a tight seal” but “popped off every single time” it was dropped, and the tall, narrow body was hard to scoop from. The 4.4-quart is shorter, but it is still a canister, not a wide tub, so expect to spoon flour into your cup rather than dip.
Why we like it
- About 5 pounds of flour, per OXO
- One-handed push-button seal
- Fully dishwasher-safe, per OXO
- Stacks with other POP containers
Key specifications
| Container | OXO Good Grips POP Big Square Medium (11233500) |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | Around 5 lb |
| Volume | 4.4 qt (4.2 L) |
| Material | Plastic |
| Seal type | Push-button lid; airtight (maker) |
| Scoop/leveler | None included |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | About 5 lb of flour, per OXO; not the bag itself |
| Dishwasher | Yes, completely (maker) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want a tidy, matching pantry and like opening containers with one hand while the other holds the measuring cup.
Skip it if your shelf is crowded and things get knocked off; ATK found the POP lid came off when dropped.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easy one-hand seal
- Stackable, many sizes
- Dishwasher-safe
Cons
- Lid popped off when dropped, per ATK (6-qt)
- Narrower than a tub for scooping
4. PrepSolutions Flour Keeper – A Built-In Leveler for Less

Progressive’s simpler PrepSolutions Flour Keeper does one thing the fancier canisters often skip: it has a built-in leveler, so you can sweep the top of a measuring cup flat without a knife and without flour falling on the counter.
The container holds 3.8 quarts (3.6 liters), which Progressive says is ideal for storing up to a 5-pound bag of flour or sugar, and the listing describes the seal as airtight. It is a plain plastic keeper rather than a design piece.
At 3.8 quarts it is smaller than the 4-quart ProKeeper+ and the 6-quart Cambro, so a full 5-pound bag will fill it close to the top, leaving less room to dip a cup. The listing does not mention the dishwasher.
Why we like it
- Built-in leveler
- Up to a 5-pound bag, per Progressive
- Airtight seal, per the listing
- One-year limited warranty
Key specifications
| Container | PrepSolutions Flour Keeper (DKS-100) |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | Up to a 5-lb bag |
| Volume | 3.8 qt (3.6 L) |
| Material | Plastic |
| Seal type | Airtight seal (maker); lid style not stated |
| Scoop/leveler | Built-in leveler |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | Yes (maker) |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want a straightforward flour keeper with a leveler and do not need a premium seal.
Skip it if you buy flour in bigger bags; a 5-pound bag fills it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Leveler built in
- Sized for a 5-lb bag
- Simple design
Cons
- Little headroom when full
- Dishwasher use not stated
5. Le Parfait 3-Liter Screw Top Jar – French Glass With a Wide Mouth

For a counter canister that is all glass and metal, Le Parfait’s 3-liter Screw Top jar is a good choice. Le Parfait says the jar is made in France, that the opening is wider than a wide-mouth mason jar, and that the screw lid is airtight and watertight, with no disposable gasket to replace.
Glass suits masa harina in particular: you can see how much is left before you start a batch of tortillas or tamales, and the jar wipes clean. Le Parfait lists the jar as dishwasher-safe and suggests mild soap and no steel brushes if washing by hand.
Le Parfait does not say how much flour the jar holds. At 3 liters, about 3.2 quarts, it is smaller than OXO’s 4.4-quart canister, which OXO says holds around 5 pounds, so expect a 5-pound bag not to fit in one go. You can keep the jar topped up from a bag stored in the pantry.
Why we like it
- Glass jar with an airtight screw lid, per Le Parfait
- Wider opening than a wide-mouth mason jar
- Made in France, per the listing
- Dishwasher-safe
Key specifications
| Container | Le Parfait Screw Top jar, 3 L (LPOJZ-3000-01) |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | Not stated |
| Volume | 3 L (96 oz) |
| Material | Glass, metal screw lid |
| Seal type | Screw lid; airtight and watertight (maker) |
| Scoop/leveler | None |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | Not stated; smaller than containers sized for one |
| Dishwasher | Yes (maker) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want glass on the counter for masa harina or sugar and do not mind topping it up.
Skip it if you want to empty a whole 5-pound bag into one container.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Glass and metal, no plastic lid
- Wide mouth
- No gasket to replace
Cons
- Too small for a full 5-lb bag
- Heavy and breakable
- Round shape wastes shelf corners
6. Rubbermaid Brilliance 16-Cup Pantry Container – Clear, Latching and Stackable

Rubbermaid’s Brilliance pantry containers are crystal clear, top and bottom, so you can see at a glance how much flour is left. This 16-cup (4-quart) size is the one Rubbermaid suggests for large quantities of flour, sugar and other baking ingredients, and its snap-tight lid helps keep out moisture and humidity, according to Rubbermaid.
The container stacks with other Brilliance pantry containers, and Rubbermaid lists it as freezer-safe and top-rack dishwasher-safe, with stain- and odor-resistant plastic. Freezer-safe is useful here: Oregon State University Extension says freezing food for two to three days kills pantry pests that are already in it.
America’s Test Kitchen tested a different Brilliance pantry container, the 4.5-quart cereal container, and rated it Recommended with Reservations: its seal held in humidity tests, but the lid “popped off when we knocked it over,” and its narrow shape made filling and leveling hard. This 16-cup container is wider, but Rubbermaid does not say whether it holds a whole 5-pound bag.
Why we like it
- Clear lid and base
- Snap-tight lid keeps out humidity, per Rubbermaid
- Freezer- and top-rack dishwasher-safe
- Stacks with other Brilliance pantry containers
Key specifications
| Container | Rubbermaid Brilliance pantry, 16 cup (1994228) |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | Not stated |
| Volume | 16 cups (4 qt) |
| Material | Clear plastic |
| Seal type | Snap-tight latching lid; airtight (maker) |
| Scoop/leveler | None |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | Not stated |
| Dishwasher | Top rack (maker) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want to see your flour, sugar and masa harina levels at a glance in matching clear containers.
Skip it if you need to know a 5-pound bag will fit; Rubbermaid does not say.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Very clear
- Freezer-safe
- Stackable
Cons
- Bag fit not stated
- A sibling container’s lid came off when knocked over, per ATK

7. Oggi Jumbo Stainless Steel Clamp Canister – Steel on the Counter

If you want flour on the counter in something that is not plastic and will not break, Oggi’s jumbo canister is stainless steel with a clear clamp lid. Oggi says the lid has a silicone seal that makes the canister airtight, and the clear top lets you check the level without opening it.
The canister is 8 inches across and 8 inches tall, according to Oggi, and the wide mouth makes it easy to fill and to get a measuring cup in. Oggi’s care instruction is to wipe it clean with a damp cloth and let it air dry.
Oggi’s Amazon listing does not state the volume or how much flour the canister holds, so we cannot tell you whether a full 5-pound bag fits. Measure the space and the bag before you buy if that matters to you.
Why we like it
- Stainless steel body
- Clamp lid with silicone seal, airtight per Oggi
- Clear lid shows the level
- Wide mouth for filling and scooping
Key specifications
| Container | Oggi Jumbo flour clamp canister (5499) |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | Not stated |
| Volume | Not stated; 8 in wide, 8 in tall |
| Material | Stainless steel, clear lid |
| Seal type | Clamp lid with silicone seal; airtight (maker) |
| Scoop/leveler | None |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | Not stated |
| Dishwasher | Wipe clean (maker) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want an unbreakable counter canister that matches stainless appliances.
Skip it if you need to know exactly how much it holds; Oggi does not say on the listing.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Will not shatter
- Clamp seal
- Wide mouth
Cons
- Capacity not stated
- Hand-wash care
- Cannot see the side level
8. Chef’s Path 5.2-Liter Containers, 2-Pack – A Pair for Flour and Masa Harina

Most Mexican kitchens need two big containers, not one: wheat flour for tortillas de harina and masa harina for corn tortillas and tamales. Chef’s Path sells its 5.2-liter (175-ounce) containers in a pair, with measuring cups, eight reusable labels and a chalk marker so nobody mistakes one white powder for the other.
The lids lock on the sides and have a silicone gasket, and Chef’s Path says they are designed to lock out moisture and air. The clear plastic stacks, and the maker calls the canisters stain- and odor-resistant and dishwasher-friendly.
Chef’s Path does not state how many pounds of flour each container holds. At 5.2 liters, each is larger than OXO’s 4.4-quart canister, but that is a volume comparison, not a promise that a particular bag fits.
Why we like it
- Two large containers in one pack
- Side-locking lids with silicone gasket
- Measuring cups and labels included
- Stackable clear plastic
Key specifications
| Container | Chef’s Path large airtight container, 2-pack |
|---|---|
| Capacity (flour, as stated) | Not stated |
| Volume | 5.2 L (175 oz) each |
| Material | Clear plastic |
| Seal type | Side-locking lid, silicone gasket |
| Scoop/leveler | Measuring cups included |
| Fits a 5-lb bag | Not stated |
| Dishwasher | Yes (maker) |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you keep both flour and masa harina on hand and want two matching, labeled containers.
Skip it if you want an independent review behind your purchase; we found none for this set.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Two containers
- Scoops and labels included
- Gasketed lids
Cons
- Flour capacity not stated
- No independent review found
How to choose a flour container
Get the flour out of the paper bag
America’s Test Kitchen’s advice is direct: “Leaving the flour in its paper bag will not prolong its freshness.” Moving all-purpose flour into an airtight container protects it from humidity, and ATK says doing so extends its shelf life to one year. Oregon State University Extension adds that grocery store packaging “is inadequate for protection from pantry pests.”

A wide opening beats a clever lid
The containers that did best in ATK’s dry storage review had openings wide enough to dip a measuring cup and level it. Tall, narrow canisters look neat but force you to spoon flour out, and ATK’s not-recommended glass jar had a neck “only 4.25 inches wide” that a measuring cup barely fit through. If you measure by volume, use the spoon-and-level method or, better, weigh your flour.
Size it to the bag you buy
A container that takes the whole bag avoids a half-empty bag sitting next to it. ATK found the 6-quart Cambro held a 5-pound bag with room to spare, and Progressive and OXO size their 4- and 4.4-quart containers for about 5 pounds. If you buy flour or masa harina in larger sacks, use a big container in the pantry and a smaller one on the counter.
Seal and humidity
In a humid climate, a gasketed, latching lid is worth having. ATK found the ProKeeper+ stayed sealed even when dropped, while the OXO POP and Rubbermaid Brilliance lids came off when their containers fell.
Masa harina and cornmeal
ATK says cornmeal and whole wheat flour “contain natural oils that will go rancid in as little as 3 months” and are best kept in zipper-lock bags in the freezer. ATK does not mention masa harina, so we do not stretch its advice: keep masa harina in an airtight container in a cool, dry place and go by the date on the bag. Our explainer on nixtamalization explains how masa harina is made.
How we picked these eight flour containers
We started with America’s Test Kitchen’s dry storage container review, which named the Cambro CamSquares 6-quart translucent container and the Progressive ProKeeper+ 4-quart flour container co-winners and tested OXO POP, Rubbermaid Brilliance, Caraway and Anchor Hocking containers. We kept the two winners, added OXO and Rubbermaid in the sizes their makers suggest for flour, and filled out the range with a budget keeper with a leveler, glass and stainless steel canisters and a two-pack for flour and masa harina. Specifications come from each Amazon listing and maker; we wrote “Not stated” where they were silent. Every pick was in stock on Amazon when we checked.
We left out the Anchor Hocking glass cracker jar, which ATK did not recommend because its narrow neck made scooping and leveling difficult, and the Caraway glass container, which ATK said “barely fit a 5-pound bag of flour.” We have not used these containers ourselves, and we did not read Wirecutter or Serious Eats for this guide, so we do not quote them.
Flour container questions, answered
What is the best container for flour?
A wide container that holds the whole bag and seals well. In America’s Test Kitchen’s review, the Cambro 6-quart square container was best for scooping and leveling, and the ProKeeper+ 4-quart had the most secure seal.
What size container holds a 5-pound bag of flour?
About 4 quarts or more. Progressive says its 4-quart ProKeeper+ fits a 5-pound bag, OXO says its 4.4-quart POP holds around 5 pounds, and ATK found the 6-quart Cambro fit a whole bag with room to spare.
Can I keep masa harina in the same kind of container?
Yes. The same airtight, wide containers work for masa harina, sugar and rice. Label them; flour and masa harina look much alike in a clear container. Our guide to Mexican pantry staples covers what else is worth keeping on hand.
How do I keep bugs out of flour?
Oregon State University Extension says freezing affected food for two to three days kills pantry pests, and that food should then be stored in airtight containers to avoid re-infestation. It also advises cleaning cabinets well and vacuuming up spilled food dust.
Does flour last longer in an airtight container?
For all-purpose flour, America’s Test Kitchen says moving it from the paper bag into an airtight container extends its shelf life to one year.

Our final pick for flour and masa harina
Buy the Cambro 6-quart container if you measure straight from the container, or the ProKeeper+ if the seal matters most. Choose OXO POP for a matching pantry, the PrepSolutions keeper for a leveler on a budget, and the Le Parfait jar for glass on the counter.
