Glass, Steel or Clamp Lid? The Best Canister Set for Your Counter

Nine canister sets for sugar, coffee, rice, beans and masa harina, in glass and steel, with each maker's sizes, seal and care, and which suits coffee.

Clear jars show at a glance what is running low.

In a Mexican kitchen, the counter canisters do real work. Sugar for café de olla, coffee, the long-grain rice for arroz rojo, a few pounds of pinto beans, masa harina for tortillas on Sunday: these get opened every day, so they live within arm’s reach of the stove instead of at the back of the pantry. A good canister set keeps them dry, keeps pantry bugs out, and lets you scoop without spilling.

The best canister set depends on what you store and how much. Glass shows you what is left; stainless steel and opaque canisters keep light off coffee; clamp lids and gaskets seal tighter than a plain lid. This guide covers nine sets from Anchor Hocking, Pyrex, Oggi, Airscape, Kilner, Libbey, Bormioli Rocco, Cooks Standard and Mason Craft & More, with the sizes, seal and care each maker states.

Quick verdict: which canister set to buy

For most kitchens, the pick is the Anchor Hocking 3-Piece Montana Jar Set: thick, wide-mouthed glass jars in three sizes, made in the USA, easy to scoop from and dishwasher safe. If you want a gasket seal on every lid, choose the Pyrex 6-Pack Glass Canister Set; for coffee, the opaque Airscape Steel Coffee Canister set keeps out light and pushes out air.

Below, five standouts side by side, then all nine sets reviewed in full.

Our picks for the best canister set

These nine sets cover clear glass for flour, sugar and rice, steel and opaque canisters for coffee, clamp-lid jars that seal tight, and big jars for bulk beans. OXO’s POP containers are left out on purpose: they are already reviewed in our guides to the best pantry organizers and the best flour container. Before you buy, look at the bags you buy most often and how much of each you keep on the counter at once.

1. Anchor Hocking 3-Piece Montana Jar Set – Thick Glass, Wide Mouths, Made in the USA

Best overallAnchor Hocking FBA_COMIN18JU056847 3-Piece Montana Jar Set

Anchor Hocking’s Montana jars are the plain, sturdy counter jars many kitchens grew up with. The set has one 48-ounce, one 64-ounce and one 96-ounce jar, each with a matching black metal lid. Anchor Hocking describes the glass as thick-walled and the mouths as wide, which makes them easy to scoop from and harder to knock over.

The three sizes line up with a Mexican counter: the big jar for rice or beans, the middle one for sugar or masa harina, the small one for coffee or a stack of canela sticks. Anchor Hocking says the glass will not warp, stain or hold smells, which matters when the same jar might hold coffee one month and sugar the next.

The jars are dishwasher safe; the lids are hand wash only. Anchor Hocking makes the glass in the USA, in Ohio. The listing does not describe a gasket or call the lids airtight, so for a tight seal on flour or masa harina, look at the Pyrex or a clamp-lid set below.

2. Pyrex 6-Pack Glass Canister Set – Six Sizes With a Silicone Seal

Best sealed glass setPyrex 6-Pack Glass Canister Set - Lightweight Dry Food Storage Containers

Pyrex’s canister set covers the whole range of a pantry shelf in one box: two 1.5-cup canisters, then 3.5, 7, 10 and 18 cups. Every canister has a glass lid with a food-grade silicone seal, which Pyrex says keeps food fresh and stored securely, and the lid opens easily.

The small ones suit whole cumin, cloves or a bag of dried Mexican oregano; the 7- and 10-cup sizes take sugar, rice or coffee; the 18-cup canister holds a good amount of masa harina or flour. Pyrex describes the glass as lightweight, which helps when you are lifting the big one down from a shelf.

Pyrex says the set is intentionally made without lead, cadmium and BPA. The glass is dishwasher safe, and the set carries a two-year limited warranty. The listing does not say where it is made.

Why we like it

3. Oggi Stainless Steel Canister Set of 4 – Clamp Lids You Can See Through

Best stainless steelOggi Set of 4 Stainless Steel Kitchen Canisters - Airtight Clamp Lid

Oggi’s steel set gives you four canisters at 26, 36, 47 and 62 ounces, each closed by a locking clamp over a silicone gasket. Oggi says the gaskets and clamps keep the contents fresh and dry, and the clear lids let you see what is inside without opening them.

Steel suits a counter next to the stove, and the four sizes cover sugar, coffee, tea and a few cups of rice or flour. Oggi suggests it for sugar, cookies, flour, tea, coffee and spices. Care is easy: Oggi says to wipe the canisters with a damp cloth between uses.

The see-through lid is a trade-off for coffee. The National Coffee Association advises against clear canisters for coffee because light can affect its taste, so keep beans in the cupboard or in the Airscape below. The set carries a 90-day limited warranty.

Why we like it

  • Four sizes, 26 to 62 ounces
  • Locking clamps over silicone gaskets
  • See-through lids
  • Wipe-clean steel

4. Airscape Steel Coffee Canister Set of 3 – Pushes the Air Out of the Can

Best for coffeeAirScape Steel Coffee Canister Family - Set of 3 - Dry Goods Storage

Airscape’s canisters work differently from a plain lid. Inside each one is a plunger lid that you press down onto the coffee, pushing the air out before you close the outer lid; the maker says you will hear a “swoosh” when it works. The steel body is opaque, so no light reaches the beans.

That matches the National Coffee Association’s advice: store coffee in an airtight, opaque container, away from heat, and buy in small amounts. The set has three sizes. Airscape says the small holds about half a pound of whole beans (5 by 4 inches), the medium about a pound (5 by 7 inches) and the large Kilo about 2.2 pounds (7 by 8 inches). Airscape also suggests them for tea, flour, sugar and nuts.

The canisters are 18/8 stainless steel with BPA-free components and an enamel paint finish, and they are hand wash only. Keep them away from the stove and the dishwasher vent, which the NCA also warns against for coffee.

Why we like it

  • Plunger lid pushes out air
  • Opaque steel keeps out light
  • Three sizes, half a pound to 2.2 pounds
  • Stacks on the counter or in the pantry

Key specifications

  • Three useful sizes

5. Kilner Square Clip Top Jars, 1 Liter, Set of 3 – A Steel Clip and a Tight Seal

Best clamp jarsKilner Square Clip Top Jar Set of 3

Kilner’s clip top jars are the classic preserving jar with a glass lid held down by a stainless steel clip. Kilner says the clip was engineered for the right tension to give an airtight, secure seal every time. This set has three square 1-liter jars, each about 15 centimeters tall and 11 wide.

Square jars sit side by side on a shelf without wasted space, and a liter is a handy size for coffee beans, Mexican hot chocolate tablets, piloncillo cones or a couple of pounds of black beans. Kilner suggests them for coffee beans, pasta and nuts as well as pickles and chutneys.

The jars are soda-lime glass and dishwasher safe; Kilner says not to pour boiling water straight into them. Kilner says the glass is BPA-free and does not absorb smells, flavors or stains.

Why we like it

  • Stainless steel clip closure
  • Airtight seal, per Kilner
  • Square jars line up on a shelf
  • Dishwasher safe

6. Libbey Stackable Glass Storage Jars, 4-Piece – Jars That Stack Into a Tower

Best stacking setLibbey Stackable Glass Storage Jars with Airtight Lids

Libbey’s cylinders are made to stack: each translucent plastic lid is shaped so the next jar sits on top of it, which turns four canisters into one short tower on a crowded counter. The set has jars at 15, 22, 31 and 58 ounces.

Libbey calls the lids airtight and suggests the jars for flour, sugar, oats, coffee, candy and cereal. In our kind of kitchen that means rice in the big one, sugar in the next, and the small two for things like pepitas or dried hibiscus flowers for agua de jamaica.

The jars are dishwasher safe, according to Libbey. The lids are plastic rather than glass or steel, and the listing does not say whether they go in the dishwasher too, so wash them by hand to be safe.

Why we like it

  • Lids designed for stacking
  • Four sizes, 15 to 58 ounces
  • Airtight lids, per Libbey
  • Dishwasher-safe glass

Key specifications

Set Libbey, model 102850

7. Bormioli Rocco Fido Jars, 33.75 oz, Set of 2 – Italian Glass With a Wire Clamp

Best Italian glassBormioli Rocco Fido Collection

Bormioli Rocco’s Fido is the round Italian cousin of the Kilner: a glass jar with a glass lid, a rubber seal and a stainless wire clamp. This pair holds 33.75 ounces each and stands 6.25 inches tall by 4.25 inches across, and Bormioli Rocco makes them in Italy.

A jar this size holds a pound of rice or beans, a bag of coffee, or the canela and star anise for a pot of ponche. Bormioli Rocco says the glass is odor and stain proof and suggests them for pasta, rice and beans. The listing calls the seal airtight.

The jars are dishwasher safe. It is a set of two in one size, so it works best as an add-on to a larger set rather than as the whole counter.

Why we like it

  • Rubber seal and wire clamp
  • Made in Italy
  • Odor and stain proof, per the maker
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

8. Cooks Standard Large Stainless Steel Canister Set, 4-Piece – Up to 5 Quarts for Bulk Flour

Best for bulk staplesCooks Standard Large Stainless Steel Kitchen Canister Set for Countertop

Cooks Standard’s large set is built for kitchens that buy in bulk. The four canisters hold 1.6, 2.5, 3.5 and 5 quarts, and Cooks Standard designed them for bulk coffee, flour and sugar. The 5-quart canister takes a big bag of flour or masa harina; the smaller ones suit sugar, rice and coffee.

Each canister is 18/10 stainless steel with a tempered glass lid sealed by silicone, which Cooks Standard says helps block air and moisture. The maker calls the steel food-grade, BPA-free and corrosion-resistant. The glass lid lets you see the level from above while the steel sides keep light off the sides.

The listing gives no care instructions or dimensions beyond the capacities, so measure the height under your cabinets before you put the 5-quart canister on the counter.

Why we like it

  • Four sizes up to 5 quarts
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Silicone-sealed glass lids
  • Designed for bulk coffee, flour and sugar

9. Mason Craft & More Glass Apothecary Canisters, 5.7 Liters, Set of 2 – Big Jars for Beans and Rice

Best big jarsMason Craft & More Airtight Kitchen Food Storage Clear Glass Pop Up Lid Canister

When you buy pinto beans or rice by the big bag, a set of small canisters will not hold it. Mason Craft & More’s apothecary jars hold 5.7 liters each, roomy enough for a large bag of beans in one and rice in the other, on display where you can see when you are running low.

The jars are thick glass with tight-fitting glass lids, and the maker describes the glass as stain and odor resistant and BPA-free. It suggests them for rice, sugar, pasta and coffee, and notes they are not intended for hot liquids.

The listing does not mention a gasket, so the lids rest on rather than seal the jar. For long storage, the Illinois Extension advises tightly closed containers against pantry pests, so use these for staples you go through quickly, and keep anything that sits for months in a sealed jar.

Why we like it

  • 5.7 liters per jar
  • Thick glass
  • Stain and odor resistant, per the maker
  • Glass lids

Key specifications

Set Mason Craft & More apothecary, 2-piece

How to choose a canister set for a Mexican counter

The seal. This is the first thing to check. The Illinois Extension advises storing foods in tightly closed glass, metal or heavy plastic containers, because pantry pests can chew through paper, cardboard and thin plastic. A clamp over a gasket (Oggi, Kilner, Bormioli Rocco), a gasket under the lid (Pyrex, Cooks Standard) or a plunger lid (Airscape) closes tighter than a lid that just rests on top (Anchor Hocking, Mason Craft & More). Use the tight ones for flour, masa harina and anything that will sit for weeks.

Coffee needs its own canister. The National Coffee Association says to keep coffee in an airtight container, out of the light, and notes that clear canisters let in light that can affect the taste. It also says to avoid cabinets near the oven or dishwasher. An opaque steel canister like the Airscape fits that advice; a clear jar is fine for display, not for the beans you brew.

Four glass jars of lentils, grains and mixed beans on a wooden shelf against a dark wall
Mixed sizes, one for each dry staple.

Sizes that match your bags. Look at what you buy. OXO, for example, sizes its 4.4-quart POP container for a 5-pound bag of flour or sugar, and Airscape sizes its medium canister for about a pound of whole coffee beans. Mixed sets (Pyrex, Oggi, Cooks Standard) cover small to large; single-size sets (Kilner, Fido) are easier to line up but cover fewer jobs. The Illinois Extension also suggests buying dried foods in amounts small enough to use up in a short time.

Glass, steel or ceramic. Glass shows you what is left and, according to Anchor Hocking and Kilner, does not hold smells or stains. Steel keeps light out and will not break. Ceramic sets look good on a counter, but we left them out because we could not find a lead-free glaze statement from the makers of the ceramic sets we considered; Pyrex, by contrast, says its glass canisters are made without lead and cadmium.

Care. Glass jars from Anchor Hocking, Pyrex, Kilner, Libbey and Bormioli Rocco go in the dishwasher, though some lids do not. The Airscape is hand wash only, and Oggi says to wipe its canisters with a damp cloth. Dry every canister completely before you refill it.

How we chose these nine canister sets

We started from what a Mexican home kitchen keeps on the counter, from sugar, coffee and rice to beans and masa harina, and chose real, branded sets sold on Amazon in the United States in glass and steel, with a mix of seal types and sizes. We checked that each was in stock when we wrote this, took every size, material, seal and care detail from the maker’s listing, and wrote “not stated” where a maker gives no detail. Coffee and pantry-pest advice comes from the National Coffee Association and the Illinois Extension. OXO POP containers and the single canisters already reviewed in our flour container guide were left out to avoid repeating them, Le Parfait jars, already in our flour container and spice jar guides, were not repeated, ceramic sets were left out for lack of a lead-free glaze statement, and Bormioli Rocco’s larger Fido sets were only scarcely in stock. We have not used these products ourselves.

Canister set questions, answered

What is the best canister set for a kitchen?

For most kitchens, the Anchor Hocking 3-Piece Montana Jar Set: thick glass in three useful sizes, made in the USA. If a sealed lid matters more, choose the Pyrex 6-Pack, which has a silicone gasket on every lid.

Are glass or stainless steel canisters better?

Glass lets you see what is left and, per several makers here, does not hold smells or stains. Steel keeps out light, which the National Coffee Association says matters for coffee, and will not break if it falls. Many kitchens use glass for flour, sugar and rice and steel for coffee.

What canisters keep coffee fresh?

The National Coffee Association recommends an airtight, opaque container kept away from heat. The Airscape set, with its plunger lid and steel body, fits that advice best of the sets here.

Do canisters keep bugs out of flour and rice?

A tightly closed container helps. The Illinois Extension recommends tightly closed glass, metal or heavy plastic containers, because pantry pests chew through paper, cardboard and thin plastic. Choose a clamp or gasket lid for flour and masa harina.

What are the top-rated canister sets?

We do not rank by star ratings. Our picks are the Anchor Hocking Montana set for everyday glass jars, the Pyrex set for a seal on every lid, and the Airscape set for coffee.

The canisters we would put on the counter first

Start with the Anchor Hocking jars for rice, beans and sugar, and add an Airscape canister for coffee. For a full pantry system, see the best pantry organizers; for big bags of flour and masa harina, the best flour container; for the small stuff, the best spice jars; and for the coffee beans themselves, the best coffee grinder. For half an onion or a block of queso fresco, a canister is the wrong tool; see our guide to the best beeswax wraps.
