Which Is the Best Cheap Gas Grill? Budget Picks That Cook Evenly

Budget propane grills from Monument, Nexgrill, Royal Gourmet, Charbroil and Kenmore, compared on grates, BTU, burners and warranty, plus a Weber step-up.

A cheap gas grill can cook a very good plate of carne asada. What it usually cannot do is cook evenly from edge to edge, hold its heat when the lid opens, or survive several summers of rain. The trick to buying at the low end is knowing which corners a maker has cut and which ones matter to the food.

This guide covers lower-priced propane grills from Monument, Nexgrill, Royal Gourmet, Charbroil and Kenmore, plus Weber’s Spirit E-210 as a step up for anyone who can stretch the budget. For each we list burners, BTU, cooking area, grates, side burner, fuel and warranty, as the maker or Amazon listing gives them. We do not quote prices, which change constantly; we describe price tiers in words instead.

Quick verdict: which cheap gas grill to buy

The best cheap gas grill for most people is the Monument Mesa 3+1 Burner Propane Grill: three main burners and a side burner, porcelain-enameled cast iron grates and an 8-year warranty on the burners, which is rare in the budget tier. If you can spend a little more, the Weber Spirit E-210 adds a cast aluminum cookbox and a 10-year warranty. For a side burner at the lowest tier, look at the Nexgrill 3-Burner with Side Burner; for a small patio, the Nexgrill Deluxe 2-Burner; and for the most burners, the Royal Gourmet OK4002T.

The table compares those five picks. All eight grills are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best cheap gas grill

These eight grills sit in the lower price tiers for full-size gas grills, with the Weber as a mid-tier step up. Each review says who the grill suits, which numbers to trust, and one honest reason to skip it.

1. Monument Mesa 3+1 Burner Propane Grill – Cast Iron and a Long Burner Warranty

Best overallMonument Grills Mesa Series

Monument’s Mesa305 gives you the parts that make a budget grill cook better: porcelain-enameled cast iron grates, stainless steel burners and a side burner. The listing gives three main burners and a side burner with 48,000 BTU in total, without splitting that figure between them, and a cooking area of 405 square inches plus a 165-square-inch warming rack, 570 in all.

Monument says the grill reaches 650°F in 15 minutes. Take that as the maker’s figure; what matters more for even cooking is that cast iron holds heat across the whole grate, so the steak at the edge cooks closer to the steak in the middle. The Clearview lid has a full window and a temperature gauge, so you can check chicken without letting the heat out, and the knobs light red on high and white when off.

The side burner is the bonus for a Mexican cookout: a pot of charro beans or a pan of rice stays warm while the carne asada cooks. The warranty is the other reason it leads: Monument lists 2 years on the grill, 8 years on the stainless burners and 1 year on electrical parts, where many budget grills stop at one year for everything.

Why we like it

  • Porcelain-enameled cast iron grates
  • Side burner included
  • Window lid with temperature gauge
  • 8-year warranty on the burners (Monument)

Key specifications

Model Mesa305 (M305)
Burners 3 stainless steel, plus side burner

Cooking area 405 sq in primary + 165 sq in warming rack
Grates Porcelain-enameled cast iron
Side burner Yes
Fuel Propane
Warranty 2 yr grill, 8 yr burners, 1 yr electrical

Why we recommend it

It suits a family that grills every weekend and wants cast iron, a side burner and a burner warranty that outlasts most budget grills. It gives the most of what matters to the food for the money among our picks.

Skip it if you want a single, clear main-burner BTU figure; the listing only gives the total with the side burner included.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Cast iron grates
  • Side burner
  • Long burner warranty

Cons

  • Main BTU not separated
  • Two-year cover on the rest of the grill

2. Weber Spirit E-210 2-Burner Propane Grill – Worth Stretching For

Step-up pickWeber® Spirit® E-210 Gas Grill

The Spirit E-210 costs more than anything else on this page, and it is here because the extra money buys the parts budget grills skimp on. Weber gives it two burners at 26,600 BTU per hour, 360 square inches of primary space and a 90-square-inch warming rack, on porcelain-enameled cast iron grates.

The cookbox is cast aluminum, which Weber says resists rust and peeling, and stainless Flavorizer bars between burner and grate catch drips, vaporize them and steer grease away from the flame. Weber says the grill heats quickly and cooks evenly across the grates. A pull-out grease tray, a cabinet that hides the tank and Snap-Jet ignition, which lights each burner with a press and turn of its knob, round it out.

The warranty is 10 years, limited. That is the strongest on this page, and it is the plainest way to judge whether a grill is built to last. Two burners still give you a hot zone for steak and a cooler zone for chicken or tortillas.

Why we like it

  • Cast aluminum cookbox (Weber)
  • Porcelain-enameled cast iron grates
  • Flavorizer bars and pull-out grease tray
  • 10-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model E-210 (1501000)

BTU (main) 26,600
Cooking area 360 sq in primary + 90 sq in warming rack
Grates Porcelain-enameled cast iron
Side burner None
Fuel Propane
Warranty 10-year limited

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you would rather buy one grill for many years than replace a cheaper one sooner. It is the same grill we recommend for small households in our main best gas grill guide.

Skip it if the budget is firm. It sits in a higher price tier than the rest of this list and has only two burners.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Longest warranty here
  • Rust-resistant cookbox
  • Cast iron grates

Cons

  • Higher price tier
  • Two burners only
  • No side burner

3. Nexgrill 3-Burner Propane Grill with Side Burner – Cast Iron and a Side Burner

Best budget side burnerNexgrill Propane 3-Burner Gas Grill

Nexgrill’s 720-0925S is one of the lowest-priced ways to get both cast iron grates and a side burner. The listing gives three stainless steel burners at 13,500 BTU each, 40,500 BTU in total, plus a 12,000 BTU side burner; the title rounds the whole to 52,000 BTU.

The grates are cast iron with a matte finish, which the listing says resists rust and cracking. Cast iron is the right choice at this price, because it holds heat better than the thin porcelain-coated steel grates many cheap grills use. The lid is steel rather than stainless, with a built-in thermometer, and ignition is electronic.

One figure does not add up. The listing title gives 418 square inches of cooking space, while a feature line says 562 square inches in total; the second figure probably includes a warming rack, but the listing does not say so. We use the smaller number in the table. The warranty is one year.

Why we like it

  • Three 13,500 BTU stainless burners
  • 12,000 BTU side burner
  • Cast iron grates
  • Electronic ignition and lid thermometer

Key specifications

Model 720-0925S
Burners 3 stainless steel, plus side burner
BTU (main) 40,500 (3 x 13,500); side burner 12,000
Cooking area 418 sq in (title); 562 sq in total (feature list)
Grates Cast iron, matte finish
Side burner Yes, 12,000 BTU
Fuel Propane
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook on a tight budget who wants a side burner for beans, salsa or frying chiles and still wants cast iron grates.

Skip it if you plan to keep the grill for many years; a one-year warranty and a painted steel lid are where the savings come from.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Side burner with stated BTU
  • Cast iron grates
  • Good output for three burners

Cons

  • Conflicting cooking-area figures
  • 1-year warranty
  • Steel lid, not stainless

4. Nexgrill Deluxe 2-Burner Propane Grill – Compact Cabinet Grill

Best for small patiosNexgrill Deluxe 2-Burner Gas Grill

For a narrow patio or a household of two to four, Nexgrill’s Deluxe 2-Burner is a full-height cabinet grill in a smaller footprint. The listing gives two burners at 28,000 BTU in total and 401 square inches of cooking space with a warming rack, which Nexgrill says fits 8 to 10 burgers.

The grates are porcelain-coated cast iron, the better grate material at this tier. Two burners give you a hot side for searing and a cooler side for finishing, which is all most weeknight grilling needs. The side shelves fold down to save space, and the cabinet sits on four casters.

The rest is simple: one-button electronic ignition, a stainless control panel, a lid thermometer and two tool hooks. The warranty is one year, limited. The listing does not say whether its 401 square inches include the warming rack.

Why we like it

  • Porcelain-coated cast iron grates
  • 28,000 BTU over two burners
  • Folding side shelves
  • Four casters and a cabinet base

Key specifications

Model 720-0864RA

BTU (main) 28,000
Cooking area 401 sq in (warming rack included or not, not stated)
Grates Porcelain-coated cast iron
Side burner None

Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits apartments with a ground-floor patio, townhouses and couples who want a real gas grill without the width of a three- or four-burner cart.

Skip it if you host often; two burners and room for about ten burgers mean cooking in batches for a party.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Small footprint
  • Cast iron grates
  • Folding shelves

Cons

  • Only two zones
  • 1-year warranty

5. Royal Gourmet 4-Burner Gas Grill with Side Burner – Four Zones on a Budget

Most burners for the moneyRoyal Gourmet OK4002T 4-Burner Gas Grill with Side Burner & Storage Shelves

Royal Gourmet’s OK4002T is the only four-burner grill on this page. The listing gives four 10,000 BTU main burners, 40,000 BTU in all, and a 9,000 BTU side burner whose lid folds down to act as a prep shelf. Cooking area is 406 square inches of primary space and a 106-square-inch warming rack, 512 in total.

Four burners on a modest grate means narrow zones, but zones all the same: hot for skirt steak, medium for chicken, low for onions and corn, and one off to rest the meat. On the listing’s own figures that is about 99 BTU per square inch, a healthy ratio. Two side shelves with hooks and a knife rack give you somewhere to slice.

The listing leaves out more than we would like. It does not say what the grates are made of, and its warranty is one year on all parts. Check the product photos for the grates before you buy, and expect a shorter life than the Monument or Weber.

Why we like it

  • Four 10,000 BTU main burners
  • 9,000 BTU side burner that doubles as a shelf
  • Electronic ignition
  • Knife rack and tool hooks

Key specifications

Model OK4002T
Burners 4, plus side burner
BTU (main) 40,000 (4 x 10,000); side burner 9,000
Cooking area 406 sq in primary + 106 sq in warming rack
Grates Not stated in the listing
Side burner Yes, 9,000 BTU
Fuel Gas; listing does not name the fuel type
Warranty 1-year limited, all parts

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you want four separate heat zones and a side burner at the low end of the market, and you are comfortable with fewer published details.

Skip it if you want to know what the grates are made of before buying; the listing does not say.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Four burners
  • Side burner with stated BTU
  • Strong BTU per square inch

Cons

  • Grate material not stated
  • Fuel type not spelled out
  • 1-year warranty

6. Charbroil Performance 2-Burner Cabinet Grill – Enclosed Storage, Stainless Finish

Best enclosed cabinetCharbroil Performance Series 2-Burner Gas Grill Cabinet

Charbroil’s Performance Series 2-burner puts a small grill on a closed stainless cabinet, so the propane tank and tools are out of sight. The listing gives 310 square inches of cooking space, enough for 17 burgers, and an 85-square-inch warming rack that swings away when you need the whole grate.

Charbroil says its FlavorMax cooking system gives more consistent results, and that the porcelain-coated grates are optimized for heat retention and resist rust. The listing does not say whether the grates are steel or cast iron underneath, and neither the listing nor the Charbroil pages we could find give a BTU figure for this model number, so we leave both as not stated.

The rest is practical: electronic ignition, a folding side shelf and two 7-inch wheels for moving it around the patio. The listing gives a 2-year warranty, better than the one-year terms of several grills here.

Why we like it

  • Closed cabinet hides the tank
  • Swing-away warming rack
  • Porcelain-coated, rust-resistant grates (Charbroil)
  • 2-year warranty

Key specifications

Model 463638125
Burners 2
BTU (main) Not stated
Cooking area 310 sq in primary + 85 sq in warming rack
Grates Porcelain-coated (base metal not stated)
Side burner None
Fuel Propane (tank stored in cabinet)
Warranty 2 years

Why we recommend it

It suits a small household that wants a tidy-looking grill with storage and a slightly longer warranty than most budget models.

Skip it if you want hard numbers: there is no published BTU rating for this model, and at 310 square inches it is the smallest grill here.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Enclosed cabinet
  • Two-year warranty
  • Swing-away rack

Cons

  • BTU not published
  • Smallest cooking area here
  • Grate base metal not stated

7. Kenmore 3-Burner Propane Grill – Folds Down for Storage

Best folding grillKenmore 3-Burner Propane BBQ Grill

Kenmore’s three-burner is built for small spaces that still need three zones. The listing gives 30,000 BTU across three burners, 381 square inches of primary cooking area and a 131-square-inch warming rack, 512 in total, which Kenmore says fits up to 20 burgers.

The side tables fold down: the listing gives 51 inches wide with the tables up and 32.5 inches with them folded, which makes it easier to tuck into a corner or a shed. The grates are cast iron, and the grill rolls on four casters, two of them locking. Electronic ignition and a lid thermometer round it out.

On the listing’s figures, it works out to about 79 BTU per square inch over the primary area, in line with the Weber on this page. The warranty is one year, limited, and it has an open cart rather than a cabinet, so the tank sits in view.

Why we like it

  • Three burners, 30,000 BTU
  • Cast iron grates
  • Folds from 51 to 32.5 inches wide
  • Four casters, two locking

Key specifications

Model PG-A4030400LD-AZ
Burners 3
BTU (main) 30,000
Cooking area 381 sq in primary + 131 sq in warming rack

Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who needs to store the grill in a small space between cookouts but still wants three burners and cast iron.

Skip it if you want enclosed storage or a side burner; it has neither.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Folds narrow
  • Cast iron grates
  • Locking casters

Cons

  • Open cart
  • 1-year warranty

8. Royal Gourmet GL3001 3-Burner Gas Grill – Basic Grill With a Pegboard

Simplest three-burnerRoyal Gourmet GL3001 3-Burner Gas Grill with Pegboard

The GL3001 is the most basic grill here, and we include it because it is honest about what it is. The listing gives three stainless steel burners at 6,500 BTU each, 19,500 BTU in total, with 312 square inches of primary space and a 108-square-inch warming rack.

That is the lowest output on this page, about 62 BTU per square inch. Expect it to take longer to heat and to be gentler at searing than the grills above; keep the lid down while it heats, and give thin steak a hotter, longer preheat. Royal Gourmet says the burners heat quickly and evenly, and the lid has a built-in thermometer.

The cart has folding side shelves with hooks, a pegboard for tools and two large wheels, and the listing gives its size as about 45 by 22 by 40 inches. The grate material is not stated. The warranty is one year on all parts.

Why we like it

  • Three stainless steel burners
  • Folding shelves with hooks
  • Pegboard for tools
  • Compact footprint

Key specifications

Model GL3001
Burners 3 stainless steel
BTU (main) 19,500 (3 x 6,500)
Cooking area 312 sq in primary + 108 sq in warming rack
Grates Not stated in the listing
Side burner None
Fuel Gas; listing does not name the fuel type
Warranty 1-year limited, all parts

Why we recommend it

It suits occasional grillers who want three burners on a compact cart at the lowest tier and mostly cook burgers, chicken and vegetables.

Skip it if you want a hard sear on carne asada; its stated output is well below the other grills here.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Three zones on a small cart
  • Tool pegboard
  • Folding shelves

Cons

  • Lowest BTU here
  • Grate material not stated
  • 1-year warranty

How to choose a budget gas grill that cooks evenly

At the low end, a few details decide whether a grill cooks evenly or burns one side of the steak. These are the five we would check first.

1. Grates first

Grates are where cheap grills save the most, and where it shows. Cast iron, bare or porcelain-coated, holds heat and spreads it, so a cold steak does not suck all the heat out of one spot. Porcelain-coated steel is thinner and holds much less heat. If the listing does not say, as with two picks here, look closely at the product photos. Clean any grate hot, with a scraper or brush; our best gas grill brush guide covers the tools.

Close-up of the black control knobs on the front panel of a stainless steel gas grill
Each knob controls one burner, and each burner is a heat zone.

2. BTU per square inch, not BTU

A big BTU number on a big grill means less than it seems. Divide the main-burner BTU by the primary cooking area to compare grills fairly. On the listing figures, the Royal Gourmet four-burner works out to about 99, the Kenmore about 79, the Weber about 74 and the Royal Gourmet GL3001 about 62. Higher is not automatically better, because a heavier grate and a tighter lid matter too, but a very low figure warns you the grill will struggle to sear.

3. Burners and zones

Two burners are enough for two to four people: one hot, one low. Three let you sear, cook through and hold. Four on a small grate give you narrow zones, but they are useful for a full taco spread. More burners also mean more fuel when they are all on.

4. Warranty as a quality signal

Many budget grills carry one year on every part. A longer warranty on burners, like Monument’s 8 years, or on the whole grill, like Weber’s 10, is the maker’s own bet that the parts will last. It is the most honest durability figure you will find on a listing.

5. Side burner and storage

A side burner lets you keep beans, rice or salsa going outdoors. A closed cabinet hides the tank and keeps tools dry. Both are nice to have; neither changes how evenly the grill cooks, so choose them only if you will use them.

How we narrowed down these eight grills

We looked for full-size propane grills in the lower price tiers on Amazon in the United States that were in stock when we checked, from brands that publish model numbers and specifications. We weighed the parts that affect cooking, grates, burners, BTU per square inch and lid, above extras, and treated the warranty as the best available sign of build quality. Specifications come from the brands’ Amazon listings and, for the Weber, from Weber’s own page; where a listing contradicts itself, as with the Nexgrill’s cooking area, we say so. We left out low-stock models such as several Charbroil Performance grills, Dyna-Glo models and Royal Gourmet’s cabinet grills, and unbranded sellers. We have not cooked on these grills for this guide and did not draw on outside equipment reviews.

Safety basics for any gas grill

Cheap or not, follow the manual that comes with the grill. The U.S. Fire Administration’s outdoor fire safety guidance adds these basics:

  • Use propane grills only outside; the USFA warns indoor use can cause a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Keep the grill well away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep a 3-foot safe zone around the grill for children and pets.
  • Open the lid of a gas grill before lighting it, and do not walk away while it is lit.
  • Clean the grill after each use; grease left behind can start a fire.
  • Do not store or use a grill on a porch or balcony.

Keep it covered between cookouts, too; our best gas grill cover guide explains what to look for.

Getting restaurant results from a budget grill

  • Preheat longer. Close the lid and give a lower-output grill extra time to heat before the meat goes on, so the grates are hot enough to sear.
  • Cut thin for carne asada. Thin skirt or flap steak cooks fast over high heat, which suits a grill that cannot hold heat for long. Rest it, then slice across the grain.
  • Use the zones for pollo asado. Cook chicken through over medium with the lid closed, then char it over high at the end. A thermometer tells you when it is done.
  • Add a pan. A cast iron skillet on the grates handles fajita peppers and onions that would fall through. See our best cast iron skillet and best fajita skillet guides, and how to eat fajitas for serving.
  • Warm tortillas last. A few seconds a side over the low zone, or on a comal on the side burner; our best comal for tortillas guide covers the pan.

Budget gas grill questions, answered

What counts as a cheap gas grill?

We mean the lower price tiers for a full-size, freestanding gas grill with a lid and at least two burners, below the mid-tier Weber and Broil King models. Prices change too often to quote, so check the listing.

What is the best budget gas grill brand?

No single brand wins at every price. Monument stands out for its 8-year burner warranty, Nexgrill for cast iron grates and side burners at the low end, and Royal Gourmet and Kenmore for compact, simple carts. Weber is the step up if you want a longer warranty.

What is the best value gas grill?

For value, look for cast iron grates and a warranty longer than one year. On those terms the Monument Mesa 3+1 is our pick, with the Weber Spirit E-210 as the higher-tier option that should last longest.

Are cheap gas grills worth it?

Yes, if you choose one with heat-holding grates and use it well: preheat with the lid closed, cook thin cuts over high heat and keep it covered. Expect a shorter life than a mid-tier grill, which the shorter warranties reflect.

Is a two-burner gas grill enough?

For two to four people, usually. Two burners give you a hot zone and a cool zone. If you host often, a three- or four-burner grill saves cooking in rounds.

Our final word on budget gas grills

Buy the Monument Mesa 3+1 if you want cast iron, a side burner and a long burner warranty without moving up a price tier. Step up to the Weber Spirit E-210 if you can, choose the Nexgrill 3-Burner for a side burner at the lowest tier, the Nexgrill Deluxe 2-Burner for a small patio, and the Royal Gourmet OK4002T if four burners matter most. For mid-tier and premium grills, including natural gas models, see our main best gas grill guide.
