A Spoon for the Small Cup: The Best Demitasse Spoons

The best demitasse spoons by true length and steel grade: WMF, Fortessa, Zwilling, Sambonet, Mikasa and Winco, plus who each set suits.

A white cup and a spoon on a saucer.

A regular teaspoon in an espresso cup looks like a shovel in a teacup. It’s top heavy and can tip the cup on its saucer. A demitasse spoon is simply a smaller spoon for a smaller cup, and it’s one of those inexpensive details that makes after-dinner coffee feel finished.

Size is the thing to get right. Etiquette Scholar, a guide to table settings, says a demitasse spoon is about 3¾ to 4½ inches long, in proportion to the cup and saucer. Plenty of listings run longer than that, and some don’t state a length at all. So we looked first at what each listing says about length, then at steel grade and count.

Quick verdict: which demitasse spoons to buy

Buy the WMF Virginia Espresso Spoons for most espresso drinkers: 10.8 cm long, in 18/10 Cromargan Protect steel. For a table of guests, choose the Fortessa Bistro dozen. For a present, the Sambonet Taste set comes in a gift box.

Our picks for the best demitasse spoons

1. WMF Virginia Espresso Spoons, 10.8 cm, Set of 6 – A True Demitasse Length

Best overallWMF Espresso Spoons Set of 6 Virginia Cromargan Protect

WMF is a long-standing German flatware maker, and this set hits the size that matters. Each spoon is 10.8 cm, about 4.25 inches, which falls right inside the 3¾ to 4½ inches that Etiquette Scholar gives for a demitasse spoon. They’re made of WMF’s Cromargan Protect, an 18/10 stainless steel with a patented hardening process that the maker says keeps cutlery looking new, even with heavy daily use.

That scratch claim is WMF’s own, and we haven’t checked it, but it’s the feature you’re paying for. Small spoons get handled all day and the marks show. You get six, dishwasher safe, in a design from WMF Atelier. The listing says they’re made at WMF’s own plant in Heshan, China, so don’t assume German manufacture from a German name. Amazon Germany had the lead offer when we checked, and it may take a little longer to arrive.

Why we like it

  • 10.8 cm, a true demitasse length.
  • Cromargan Protect 18/10, per the maker.
  • Six spoons.
  • Dishwasher safe.

2. Fortessa Bistro Espresso Spoons, 18/10, Set of 12 – A Dozen With Some Weight

Best for hostsFortessa Bistro 18/10 Stainless Steel Flatware Espresso Spoon

Fortessa sells to restaurants as well as homes, and this set shows it: twelve spoons in 18/10 stainless with a banded cuff at the base and top of each handle. The listing describes balanced, bold weight, and a pattern that shows on both the front and back of the piece. They’re dishwasher safe and marked with the Fortessa name.

The listing data puts them near 5 inches, so they’re a touch longer than the classic demitasse size and may stick out of very small cups. Twelve is a lot for one drinker, but it’s the right count if you serve coffee after dinner to a table of guests. Zwiesel Fortessa Group had the lead offer, which is the maker’s own group.

Why we like it

  • Twelve spoons.
  • 18/10 stainless steel.
  • Design on both sides.
  • Sold by the maker’s group.

3. Zwilling Dinner Espresso Spoons, 18/10, Set of 6 – Made to Match Zwilling Cutlery

Best for matching setsZwilling 1000917 07150-247-0 Dinner

Zwilling sells this set as a complement to almost any of its cutlery ranges. Each spoon is 18/10 stainless with a brilliant surface, they can go in the dishwasher, and the listing gives a product length of 11 cm, about 4.3 inches. So it sits within the classic demitasse range, too.

The listing is brief, but what it gives is clear. Six spoons cover a small household, and the plain design makes it easy to pair with cups of any shape. Note that the listing’s width and height figures look like package sizes and not spoon sizes, so don’t take them as the bowl width. Amazon Germany had the lead offer when we checked.

Why we like it

  • 11 cm, within the classic range.
  • 18/10 stainless steel.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Goes with Zwilling flatware.

4. Sambonet Taste Moka Spoons, 12 cm, Set of 6 – Italian Design in a Gift Box

Best giftSambonet 52553 A37 Set Moka Spoons Taste

Sambonet is an Italian maker, and this set is its minimalist Taste line in a gift box. You get six moka spoons, 12 cm long, about 4.7 inches, in 18/10 stainless steel. The listing calls the design essential and minimalist, and says the pieces are dishwasher safe.

Moka is the term here for a small coffee spoon, and at 12 cm it’s slightly longer than the classic demitasse range, so this is a better fit for espresso cups than for the tiniest ones. The gift box makes this the easy present in the group. Amazon Germany had the lead offer when we checked, and no warranty appears in the text we read.

Why we like it

  • Gift box included.
  • 18/10 stainless steel.

5. Mikasa Serena Demitasse Spoons, Set of 4 – A Named Demitasse Set

Best small setMikasa 5147621 Serena Stainless Steel Demitasse Spoon

Mikasa calls these demitasse spoons outright, and it suggests them for coffee, tea, condiments, ice cream and sorbet. The set is four, in 18/0 stainless steel, with a clean, classic shape, and it’s dishwasher safe. The maker field names Lifetime Brands, which owns the name.

A small count is handy if you only need a few for a couple of espresso cups. The 18/0 grade is a step down from the 18/10 sets here, though the listing says it’s rust-resistant and needs no polishing. The listing doesn’t state a length, and the data field looks like a package size. A seller called BEYOND YOUR HOME had the lead offer when we checked.

Why we like it

  • Sold as demitasse spoons.
  • Set of 4.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Classic shape.

6. Winco Elegance Demitasse Spoon Set, 18/0, 12 Pieces – Restaurant-Grade by the Dozen

Best for cafés at homeWinco 12-Piece Elegance Demitasse Spoon Set

Winco’s demitasse spoons are made for hotels, restaurants and cafés, and they’re sold in a dozen. The listing data puts them at about 4.5 inches, right at the top of the classic range. They’re forged from heavyweight 18/0 stainless and approved for commercial and home dishwashers.

One small puzzle: the title says Elegance, but the feature text describes a Dots pattern with beading around the handle. Look at the photos to see which you’d get. For a home with lots of coffee guests, it’s a practical set, and Amazon.com had the lead offer. Note that 18/0 steel is generally less rust resistant than 18/10, so rinse after use.

Why we like it

  • About 4.5 inches.
  • Heavyweight, per the listing.
  • Twelve pieces.
  • Home and commercial dishwashers.

7. Hiware Demitasse Espresso Spoons, 4 in, 12 Pieces – Short and Plain

Best small sizeHiware 12-Piece Demitasse Espresso Spoons

Hiware is one of two Amazon-first brands we allow on this page. Its listing is clear on size: each spoon is 4 inches long and 0.9 inch wide, which sits right in the classic demitasse range. The handle is described as extra thick, and the steel as stainless with no stated grade. It’s dishwasher safe and comes as a dozen.

The listing’s uses range from coffee and tea to desserts and even soft-boiled eggs, which is a reminder that a small spoon has plenty of jobs around a kitchen. Its other claim, that it’s suitable for a baby or a toddler, is one we’d leave to the maker. A seller named BRILLBOW had the lead offer. We know the brand only through its listings.

Why we like it

  • 4 x 0.9 inches stated.
  • Twelve pieces.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Useful beyond coffee.

8. Keawell Premium Louise Coffee Spoons, 18/10, Set of 6 – 18/10 With a Mirror Finish

Best for mirror finishKEAWELL Premium Louise 6-Piece 4.4-Inch 18/10 Coffee Spoons (4.4 inches

Keawell is the second Amazon-first brand on the page. Its Louise spoon is 18/10 stainless with a mirror finish, dishwasher safe, in a set of six. Its listing is unusually careful about measurement, stating 4.9 inches long by 1 inch wide, tip to tail.

The title says 4.4 inches, though, which is a real conflict for a spoon this small. Take the 4.9-inch figure as the likelier one, since the bullet explains how it was measured, and expect a slightly longer spoon than a classic demitasse. The seller’s copy about balance and comfort is its own, and we haven’t checked it. Keawell had the lead offer.

Why we like it

  • 18/10 stainless steel.
  • Mirror finish.
  • Six spoons.
  • Dishwasher safe.

Which set suits your coffee routine

If you drink espresso daily and wash up by hand or machine, a set of six in 18/10 is plenty, and WMF or Zwilling are the first places to look. If you serve coffee to a table of guests, twelve from Fortessa or Winco makes sense. If you only need a couple for two cups, Mikasa’s four are enough.

Think about your cups before your spoons. A spoon that suits a 2-ounce cup may look short in a cappuccino cup, and a 5-inch spoon may stick out of the smallest ones.

How to choose espresso spoons

Length

The classic range is 3¾ to 4½ inches. Among these picks, Hiware at 4 inches, WMF at 10.8 cm, Zwilling at 11 cm and Winco’s listing at about 4.5 inches sit within it. Sambonet at 12 cm and Fortessa near 5 inches run longer, and they suit a slightly larger cup. Keawell’s listing gives two figures.

Steel grade

Most of these are 18/10, the higher nickel grade, which generally resists rust and keeps its shine better than 18/0. Mikasa and Winco use 18/0, and Hiware doesn’t state its grade. For a spoon that sits in coffee for a moment and then goes in the dishwasher, the gap may matter less than it would for soup or salsa. That’s our own reasoning.

Count

These come in sets of 4, 6 and 12. Six usually covers a home. Twelve only makes sense if you host, or if you’ll also use them for sugar, condiments or small desserts.

Style and matching

If your flatware is Zwilling, the Dinner set is made to go with it. Otherwise, a plain spoon goes with most cups. Decorative handles look nice on a saucer, but they’re one more thing to clean.

Seller

Several of the European makers came through Amazon Germany when we checked. That doesn’t change the spoon, but it can affect shipping time and returns, so read the offer before you buy.

How we picked these demitasse spoons

We looked for spoons sold for demitasse or espresso from makers we could identify, in the size a small cup needs, with Amazon-first brands kept to two. Every pick was in stock with a new lead offer on our final check. We left out bulk packs of 30 to 100, floral novelty spoons, and a second WMF pattern, to keep the list from leaning on one maker.

We have not used any of these, and no review search ran for these spoons, so the page rests on what the makers and listings say. We read Etiquette Scholar’s page on spoons for the classic size.

Demitasse spoon questions, answered

What size is a demitasse spoon?

Etiquette Scholar puts it at about 3¾ to 4½ inches long, in proportion with a demitasse cup and saucer. Many spoons sold under the name run a little longer.

Are espresso spoons the same as demitasse spoons?

In practice, yes. Listings use both words for the same small spoon, and Sambonet also says moka spoon.

What are demitasse spoons used for?

Etiquette Scholar says a demitasse spoon is used when sugar is added to coffee in a demitasse cup. Makers also suggest them for tea, condiments and small desserts, as Mikasa does.

Can demitasse spoons go in the dishwasher?

All of these state that they can. A small spoon can slip through a basket, so a covered section helps, which is our own tip.

Do I need 18/10 for a demitasse spoon?

You don’t have to have it. It’s generally more rust resistant, but a small spoon has an easier life than a soup spoon does. Mikasa’s and Winco’s 18/0 sets are reasonable choices if the price or the count suits you.

Our final pick for the small cup

Our pick is the WMF Virginia set, for its size and its steel. If you still need cups to go with them, our guide to the best espresso cups is the next stop, and the best espresso machine guide covers what fills them.
