Most refrigerators waste the same space: the gap between the top of the food on a shelf and the underside of the shelf above, and the back half of every shelf, where things go to be forgotten. A fridge organizer drawer goes after both. Some clip under a shelf and pull out like a desk drawer; some sit on the shelf and roll forward on wheels; some stack in a frame so you can open the bottom drawer without lifting the top one.

In a kitchen that keeps queso fresco, cotija, sliced deli meat, limes, jalapeños and a tub of crema going at once, that matters. Our picks for the best fridge organizer drawers

These seven cover the three ways a drawer can work in a fridge: hung under a shelf, rolled across it, or stacked on it. Six come from makers known for kitchen storage, and one, vacane, is a brand sold mainly on Amazon. All were in stock on Amazon when we checked. None of them repeats a product from our main fridge organizers guide.

Keeping a drawered fridge cold and clean

Drawers make it easier to see what you have, but they can also make it easier to overfill the fridge. The FDA advises keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F, says an appliance thermometer is the best way to know the temperature, and warns against packing the fridge so tightly that air cannot circulate. If you add drawers, leave gaps around them.

The FDA also says to clean the refrigerator regularly and wipe up spills right away, noting that drips from thawing meat can spread bacteria from one food to another. Drawers help here: keep raw meat in a closed container rather than an open drawer, so it cannot drip onto other food, and pull drawers out to wash them by hand as the makers direct.

How to choose fridge drawers that fit

Under-shelf, on-shelf or stacking

Under-shelf drawers add storage in empty space but need a compatible shelf. Rolling drawers like YouCopia’s work on almost any shelf but use shelf space. Stacking drawers make use of tall shelves. Decide which space you are trying to use before choosing a style.

Shelf thickness and shape

For under-shelf drawers, this is the deciding measurement. Glad states shelves up to 0.5 inch thick; vacane says flat-edged glass shelves with no thick borders; OXO says its drawer is ideal for flat shelves. Measure the shelf edge, including any plastic rim, and check whether the shelf is glass, solid or wire.

Depth and height

Measure shelf depth for rolling drawers (YouCopia’s is 15.1 inches deep) and clear height for stacking units (mDesign’s is 8.23 inches tall). An under-shelf drawer also takes height from the shelf below it; Glad’s, for example, is 3.88 inches tall.

Material and care

Most fridge drawers are clear plastic. Where the maker makes a BPA-free or food-safe statement we report it; where it does not, we say so. Nearly every maker here says hand wash only, so plan for that.

What you will store

How we chose these seven fridge drawers

We started from the makers known for fridge storage, including OXO, iDesign, mDesign, YouCopia, Sorbus, Simple Houseware, Rubbermaid, Joseph Joseph and Glad, and checked which sell a pull-out fridge drawer that was in stock on Amazon. Joseph Joseph’s under-shelf fridge drawer was listed as scarce, and we did not find a current fridge drawer from Simple Houseware or Rubbermaid, so they are not here. We did not repeat any product from our main fridge organizers guide or our egg organizer guide.

For each pick we recorded only what the maker or the Amazon listing states, including the shelf fit, and wrote “not stated” where the listing was silent. We did not use these drawers in our kitchen. Food-storage guidance comes from the FDA. We included one brand sold mainly on Amazon, vacane, because it states clearly which shelves it fits and which it does not, and left out the many pull-out bins from unbranded sellers. We checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall list for each brand and found no recall of these organizers.

Fridge drawer questions, answered

Do under-shelf fridge drawers work on glass shelves?

Usually, if the shelf is flat and within the maker’s thickness limit: half an inch for Glad, while vacane gives no number but rules out thick borders. OXO says its drawer is for flat refrigerator shelves. Measure the edge, including any rim.

Will a fridge drawer work on wire shelves?

An on-shelf rolling drawer such as YouCopia’s is the safer choice for wire shelves, since it does not clamp on. The under-shelf makers here describe flat shelves.

Can fridge organizer drawers go in the dishwasher?

Not the ones here that state care: iDesign and mDesign say hand wash, Glad says hand wash, and YouCopia’s 6-inch version says not dishwasher safe. Others do not state it.

Are clear fridge drawers BPA-free?

YouCopia, iDesign, Sorbus and Glad describe their plastic as BPA-free. OXO’s listing does not state a material, mDesign’s says durable plastic, and vacane’s lists food-grade PET without a BPA statement.

Can I use these drawers in the freezer?

Sorbus and mDesign say theirs work in a freezer. The others do not mention it.
