A townhome patio or a small back deck can still hold a real gas grill. You do not need a tabletop model on a folding stand; you need a full-size two- or three-burner cart that is narrow, not too deep, and has side shelves that fold or drop out of the way when the grill is not in use. That is enough grill for carne asada for four, a tray of elote and a stack of warm tortillas.
This guide covers eight full-size two- and three-burner propane grills from Broil King, Monument, Kenmore, Charbroil, Permasteel, Royal Gourmet and Nexgrill, all chosen for a small footprint. For each we give the width and depth exactly as the maker, a retailer or the Amazon listing states them, because footprint is what decides whether a grill fits. If you are in an apartment, read the section on balcony rules before you buy anything.

Quick verdict: which small-patio gas grill to buy
For most small patios, the best gas grill is the Broil King Royal 320 Shadow: three burners and cast iron grids in a frame retailers list at about 52 by 22 inches, with drop-down shelves and a lifetime cookbox warranty. For two people, the Monument Mesa 200S is a 48-inch two-burner with folding shelves. If the grill must be stored against a wall, the Kenmore 3-Burner folds to 32.5 inches. Want a flat top too? The Charbroil Pro Series 3-Burner ships with a griddle insert. For the tightest corner, the Permasteel 2-Burner is the smallest at 43.2 by 21.5 inches.
The table compares the five picks we would steer most small-space cooks toward. All eight grills are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best gas grill for small patio spaces
These eight grills are all full-size carts, not tabletop or portable grills, and all run on a standard 20-pound propane tank. They run from 43 to about 56 inches wide. Each review covers who the grill suits, the footprint and the numbers that matter, and one honest reason to skip it.
1. Broil King Royal 320 Shadow 3-Burner Propane Grill – Three Zones, Shelves That Drop

The Royal 320 Shadow is the grill we would put on most small patios. It has three burners, so you get a hot zone, a medium zone and an off zone for resting meat, yet retailer spec sheets put it at about 51.8 inches wide and 22 inches deep. Its side shelves drop down rather than fold up, so with the shelves lowered it takes less room along a railing or wall than the headline width suggests. Broil King does not publish a shelves-down width that we could find, so measure the grill body if every inch counts.
The listing gives 330 square inches of primary space on cast iron cooking grids, plus a 170-square-inch porcelain-coated warming rack, 500 in all. Three stainless steel Dual-Tube burners are rated at 30,000 BTU in total. Under the grids sits Broil King’s full-coverage stainless Flav-R-Wave system, which the maker says vaporizes drippings and helps the cookbox hold heat. The cookbox itself is cast aluminum, the kind that does not rust through.
The warranty is the long one here: a limited lifetime warranty on the cookbox, 10 years on the burners, 5 years on the Flav-R-Wave and 2 years on everything else, according to the listing. On a small patio a grill often lives outdoors under a cover year-round, so that coverage matters more than a few extra square inches.
Why we like it
- Three burners in about a 52-inch-wide frame (retailer spec)
- Drop-down side shelves
- Cast iron grids and a cast aluminum cookbox
- Lifetime cookbox, 10-year burner warranty
Key specifications
| Model | 824154 |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 3 stainless Dual-Tube; 30,000 BTU |
| Cooking area | 330 sq in primary + 170 sq in warming rack |
| Grates | Cast iron |
| Footprint (as stated) | About 51.8 in W x 22 in D x 48 in H (retailer spec) |
| Side shelves | Drop-down |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | Lifetime cookbox, 10 yr burners, 2 yr other parts |
Why we recommend it
It suits a townhome patio or small deck where you still want three heat zones, and a cook who would rather buy one grill that lasts. Two people can cook a full meal on it; four can eat from it without waiting long.
Skip it if you need the narrowest possible grill; the two-burner picks below are a few inches slimmer, and this one weighs about 113 pounds according to retailers.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Three heat zones
- Long cookbox and burner coverage
- Shelves drop out of the way
Cons
- Shelves-down width not published
- Heavy for its size
- No side burner
2. Monument Grills Mesa 200S 2-Burner Propane Grill – Two Burners, Folding Shelves

Monument’s Mesa 200S is a two-burner stainless cart grill with folding side shelves. The listing gives its size as 48 inches wide by 22 inches deep by 45.5 inches high, and the shelves fold down when you are not cooking, so it tucks into a corner more neatly than its open width.
The two 304 stainless steel burners total 24,000 BTU. Monument lists 320 square inches of primary area on enameled cast iron grates and a 130-square-inch warming rack, 450 in total, which the maker pitches at a four-person barbecue. The Clearview lid has a heat-resistant glass window and a temperature gauge, so you can check chicken thighs without lifting the lid and losing heat.
Knob lights glow white when the grill is on standby and red on high, a small help when you grill after dark on an unlit patio. Ignition is electronic. Monument’s warranty is 2 years on the grill, 8 years on the stainless burners and 1 year on electrical parts, per the listing.
Why we like it
- 48 x 22 inch footprint stated on the listing
- Folding side shelves
- Enameled cast iron grates
- 8-year burner warranty
Key specifications
| Model | Mesa200S (M200S) |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 2 stainless (304); 24,000 BTU |
| Cooking area | 320 sq in primary + 130 sq in warming rack |
| Grates | Enameled cast iron |
| Footprint (as stated) | 48 in W x 22 in D x 45.5 in H (listing) |
| Side shelves | Folding |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | 2 yr grill, 8 yr burners, 1 yr electrical |
Why we recommend it
Choose it for a couple or a family of four on a narrow patio who want a cabinet-style cart, cast iron grates and a window to watch the food. It is the pick if the grill will sit where people walk past it.
Skip it if you often cook for more than four; two burners mean the whole surface is either hot or split in two.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Window lid and gauge
- Cast iron grates
- Shelves fold flat
Cons
- Two zones only
- Short whole-grill warranty
- Smaller primary area than the three-burners

3. Kenmore 3-Burner Propane Grill with Folding Side Tables – Folds to 32.5 Inches

If your grill has to share the patio with a table and chairs, look at how narrow it gets when you are not cooking. Kenmore’s three-burner pedestal grill measures 51 inches wide with both side tables up and 32.5 inches with them folded, according to the listing. That is the smallest stored width of any three-burner grill we found in stock.
Three burners total 30,000 BTU over 381 square inches of cast iron cooking grates, with a 131-square-inch warming rack on top, 512 in all. It rolls on four casters, two of which lock, and lights with a single push-button electronic ignition. A lid thermometer is built in.
This black-and-copper version (PG-4030400LN-BC) shares its platform with the Kenmore three-burner on our best cheap gas grill page, in a different finish and model number. We include it again because folding width is the whole point of a small-patio grill, and this one folds narrower than anything else here. Kenmore lists a 1-year limited warranty.
Why we like it
- Folds from 51 to 32.5 inches wide (listing)
- Cast iron grates
- Four casters, two locking
- Three burners on a pedestal frame
Key specifications
| Model | PG-4030400LN-BC |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 3; 30,000 BTU |
| Cooking area | 381 sq in primary + 131 sq in warming rack |
| Grates | Cast iron |
| Footprint (as stated) | 51.1 in W x 24.1 in D x 45 in H; 32.5 in W folded (listing) |
| Side shelves | Folding |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | 1-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits a patio where the grill is pushed against a wall between cookouts and pulled out to use. Three burners give you a proper two-zone fire for carne asada and a cool side for tortillas.
Skip it if you want enclosed storage for the tank or a long warranty; it is an open pedestal grill with one year of coverage.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Narrowest folded width here
- Three burners
- Locking casters
Cons
- 1-year warranty
- Open frame, no cabinet
- Same platform as a pick on our cheap-grill page
4. Charbroil Pro Series 3-Burner Grill and Griddle – A Flat Top in the Box

On a small patio there is rarely room for both a grill and a griddle. Charbroil’s Pro Series three-burner solves that by shipping with a griddle insert that swaps in for the grates; Charbroil says the change takes 60 seconds or less. For fajitas that is the useful part: sear the skirt steak on the grates, then drop in the steel and soften peppers and onions on the flat top.
Charbroil’s page gives 25,500 BTU across three stainless burners, 412 square inches of primary space (the listing says 430) and a warming rack of 155 to 160 square inches, depending on which Charbroil figure you read. The grates are coated cast iron, and the griddle surface is 284 square inches of cold-rolled steel according to Charbroil. Its Amplifire cooking system sits between flame and food, and the maker says it helps eliminate flare-ups.
It is the widest grill on this page at 55.4 inches by 23.7 inches deep, per Charbroil, and Charbroil does not say the shelves fold. Measure before you buy. The warranty is 10 years on burners, 3 years on grates, lid and firebox, and 1 year on other parts.
Why we like it
- Griddle insert included
- Coated cast iron grates
- Enclosed cabinet for the tank
- 10-year burner warranty
Key specifications
| Model | 463365124 |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 3 stainless; 25,500 BTU |
| Cooking area | 412 sq in primary (Charbroil) + about 155 sq in warming rack |
| Grates | Coated cast iron; steel griddle insert |
| Footprint (as stated) | 55.4 in W x 23.7 in D x 47.7 in H (Charbroil) |
| Side shelves | Fixed (folding not stated) |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | 10 yr burners, 3 yr firebox and grates, 1 yr other |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if fajitas, smash tacos and breakfast on the patio are as likely as steaks, and you want one appliance instead of two. Our best gas grill griddle insert guide covers add-on flat tops if you prefer a different grill.
Skip it if width is your tightest limit; at 55.4 inches with fixed shelves it needs the most room of our picks.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Grill and griddle in one
- Long burner warranty
- Cabinet hides the tank
Cons
- Widest pick here
- Shelves do not fold
- Lower BTU than other three-burners
5. Broil King Signet 320 Shadow 3-Burner Propane Grill – More Room, Same Drop Shelves

The Signet 320 Shadow is the bigger sibling of our top pick, for a patio that has a few more inches to give. Retailers list it at about 56.5 inches wide, 23.2 inches deep and 48.4 inches high, and it has the same drop-down side shelves.
In return you get more grill: 400 square inches of primary space on cast iron grids and a 235-square-inch warming rack, 635 in total, with three stainless Dual-Tube burners rated at 40,000 BTU, according to the listing. That is enough to cook chicken for six and keep tortillas warm on the rack.
Construction matches the Royal 320: a cast aluminum cookbox, the full-coverage stainless Flav-R-Wave system, a closed cabinet base and the same warranty, lifetime on the cookbox, 10 years on burners, 5 years on the Flav-R-Wave and 2 years on remaining parts and paint.
Why we like it
- 635 sq in total area (listing)
- 40,000 BTU over three burners
- Drop-down shelves
- Lifetime cookbox warranty
Key specifications
| Model | 844154 |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 3 stainless Dual-Tube; 40,000 BTU |
| Cooking area | 400 sq in primary + 235 sq in warming rack |
| Grates | Cast iron |
| Footprint (as stated) | About 56.5 in W x 23.2 in D x 48.4 in H (retailer spec) |
| Side shelves | Drop-down |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | Lifetime cookbox, 10 yr burners, 2 yr other parts |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if your deck has room for a mid-size grill and you regularly feed five or six. It keeps the build and warranty of our top pick with a larger cooking surface.
Skip it if your space is truly tight; it is one of the two widest grills on this page and weighs around 134 to 136 pounds according to retailers.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Most cooking area here
- Strong warranty
- Cast aluminum cookbox
Cons
- Wide for a small patio
- Heavy to move
- Shelves-down width not published

6. Permasteel 2-Burner Propane Grill with Folding Side Tables – The Smallest Full-Size Cart

Permasteel’s PG-40201 is a compact two-burner cart. Retailer specs put it at 43.2 inches wide, 21.5 inches deep and 47.8 inches high, the smallest footprint on this page, and the side tables fold down for storage.
Two stainless steel burners total 22,000 BTU. The listing gives a 264-square-inch primary grate and a 96-square-inch warming rack, 360 in all, which Permasteel says fits about 16 burgers. It lights with an electronic ignition and rolls on four wheels, two of them locking casters.
The body is powder-coated steel with copper-colored knobs and handles. The listing does not say what the cooking grates are made of, and the warranty is 1 year, so treat this as a compact everyday grill rather than a long-term investment.
Why we like it
- 43.2 x 21.5 inch footprint (retailer spec)
- Folding side tables
- Stainless steel burners
- Four wheels, two locking
Key specifications
| Model | PG-40201-BC |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 2 stainless; 22,000 BTU |
| Cooking area | 264 sq in primary + 96 sq in warming rack |
| Grates | Not stated |
| Footprint (as stated) | 43.2 in W x 21.5 in D x 47.8 in H (retailer spec) |
| Side shelves | Folding |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | 1-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits a balcony-sized patio at a house or townhome where the rules allow a gas grill, and a cook feeding two or three. If it must fit between a door and a railing, this is the one to measure first.
Skip it if you want cast iron grates or a long warranty; the listing states neither.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Smallest footprint here
- Folding tables
- Locking casters
Cons
- Grate material not stated
- 1-year warranty
- Smallest cooking area
7. Royal Gourmet GG3001S 3-Burner Propane Grill – Three Burners on a Stainless Cabinet

Royal Gourmet’s GG3001S puts three burners on a small stainless cabinet. Walmart and Overton’s both list it at 44.69 inches long, 22.48 inches wide and 44.49 inches high, close to the Permasteel’s width with one more burner. The cabinet hides the propane tank, which keeps a small patio looking tidier.
The listing gives 25,500 BTU across three independently controlled burners, 292 square inches of porcelain-enameled cast iron grates and an 84-square-inch stainless warming rack, 376 in total. Royal Gourmet says it feeds six to eight people; we would plan on four comfortably, cooking in rounds for more.
Two side tables give prep space and three hooks hold tools. Ignition is electronic. Royal Gourmet lists a 1-year manufacturer warranty, and the listing does not say whether the side tables fold.
Why we like it
- Three burners in about 45 inches of width (retailer spec)
- Porcelain-enameled cast iron grates
- Cabinet hides the tank
- Electronic ignition
Key specifications
| Model | GG3001S |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 3; 25,500 BTU |
| Cooking area | 292 sq in primary + 84 sq in warming rack |
| Grates | Porcelain-enameled cast iron |
| Footprint (as stated) | 44.69 in L x 22.48 in W x 44.49 in H (retailer spec) |
| Side shelves | Fixed (folding not stated) |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | 1 year |
Why we recommend it
Choose it for three heat zones in a footprint not much bigger than a two-burner, with the tank out of sight.
Skip it if you want a long warranty or a big primary area; both are modest.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Three zones in a small frame
- Cast iron grates
- Enclosed cabinet
Cons
- 1-year warranty
- Small primary area for three burners
- Shelves do not fold
8. Nexgrill 3-Burner Propane Grill with Side Tables – A Light, Simple Three-Burner

Nexgrill’s 720-1012 is a plain, light three-burner on an open cart. Nexgrill lists it at about 46.5 inches wide, 22.7 inches deep and 43.2 inches high, and a retailer gives a shipping weight of 43 pounds, so it is easy to roll aside after dinner.
Three 9,000 BTU burners give 27,000 BTU in total, over 429 square inches of cooking space including a warming rack, according to the listing. The grates and the firebox are porcelain-coated steel, and the lid is stainless steel with a built-in thermometer.
Porcelain-coated steel grates are lighter and hold less heat than cast iron, so expect fainter grill marks on steak and plan to preheat longer. Side tables on both sides give prep room, and two wheels let you tilt and roll it. The warranty is 1 year, per the listing.
Why we like it
- About 46.5 x 22.7 inches (Nexgrill)
- Light to move
- Stainless steel lid
- Three independent burners
Key specifications
| Model | 720-1012 |
|---|---|
| Burners & BTU | 3 x 9,000; 27,000 BTU |
| Cooking area | 429 sq in total including warming rack |
| Grates | Porcelain-coated steel |
| Footprint (as stated) | 46.5 in W x 22.7 in D x 43.2 in H (Nexgrill) |
| Side shelves | Fixed |
| Fuel | Propane |
| Warranty | 1-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits renters and first-time grill owners who want three burners, a small footprint and something easy to move, without paying for cast iron or a cabinet.
Skip it if you want hard sears; porcelain-coated steel grates and a steel firebox hold less heat than the cast iron picks above.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easy to move
- Three zones
- Compact footprint
Cons
- Steel grates hold less heat
- 1-year warranty
- Primary area not stated separately
How to choose a gas grill for a small patio
On a small patio the cooking numbers matter less than the space numbers. These are the five things we would check, in order.
1. Measure the spot, then the grill
Measure the space where the grill will stand, then subtract room to work. You need to open the lid fully, stand in front of the knobs and step back from a flare-up. Compare that with the grill’s stated width with the shelves up, its depth, and its height with the lid open if the maker gives it. Check that the spot is also well away from the house wall, any railing and anything overhead; the safety guidance below gives the details.
2. Folding and drop-down shelves
Side shelves can add 15 inches or more to a grill’s width. Shelves that fold or drop down let the grill sit narrower between cookouts. The Kenmore goes from 51 to 32.5 inches, the Monument and Permasteel have folding shelves, and the two Broil Kings have drop-down shelves. The Charbroil, Royal Gourmet and Nexgrill have fixed shelves, so their stated width is the width they always take.
3. Two burners or three
Two burners give you a hot side and a cool side, which covers most cooking for two to four people. Three let you sear, cook through and hold at once: hot for skirt steak, medium for chicken, low for corn and tortillas. On a small patio a compact three-burner, like the Royal 320 or the Royal Gourmet GG3001S, often costs only a few inches of width over a two-burner.

4. Grates and cookbox
Cast iron grates, bare or enameled, hold heat and give the best sear; porcelain-coated steel is lighter and holds less. A cast aluminum cookbox, as on the Broil Kings, will not rust through, which matters when a small-patio grill lives outdoors all year. Keep it covered; our best gas grill cover guide covers sizing.
5. Where the propane tank goes
A cabinet base hides the 20-pound tank and keeps the patio tidier; an open cart is lighter and easier to roll. Either way, the tank stays with the grill outdoors, never stored indoors or in a garage.
Balcony and apartment rules: check before you buy
A small patio at a house or a townhome with its own ground-level yard is usually fine for a gas grill, as long as you follow the clearances in your grill’s manual. Apartments and condos are different. NFPA 1, the Fire Code, says that for buildings other than one- and two-family dwellings, no grill or similar device may be used or lit on any balcony, under any overhanging portion, or within 10 feet of any structure, and none may be stored on a balcony. That is the 2018 edition’s section 10.10.6, as quoted by the Nashville Fire Marshal’s Office, which enforces it.
Cities and states adopt different editions and amend them, and some allow exceptions, so the rule where you live may be stricter or looser. Your lease, HOA rules and local fire marshal have the final say. Ask before you buy a gas grill for a multifamily building, not after.
How we picked these eight grills
We started with what a restaurant kitchen wants from any grill: separate heat zones, grates that hold heat and enough room to cook a meal at once. Then we added the small-patio filter: full-size two- and three-burner propane carts with a stated footprint, preferring folding or drop-down shelves. We left out tabletop and portable grills, which our other guides cover, and we did not repeat any grill from our related gas grill guides, apart from one Kenmore three-burner that shares a platform with a pick on our cheap-grill page, kept here for its folding width.
Every grill was showing as in stock on Amazon when we checked; Weber’s Spirit two-burner already appears in several of our guides, and Napoleon’s and Broil King’s smallest models were showing low stock. Specifications come from Charbroil’s and Nexgrill’s own pages, from retailer spec sheets for the Broil King, Permasteel and Royal Gourmet dimensions, and otherwise from the Amazon listings. We have not cooked on these grills for this guide, and we did not draw on outside equipment reviews.

Grilling safely in a small space
Small patios put the grill closer to walls, doors and people, so the basics matter more. Follow your grill’s manual first. The U.S. Fire Administration’s outdoor fire safety guidance adds these points for gas grills:
- Use propane grills only outside; the USFA warns that indoor use can cause a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Place the grill well away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep a 3-foot safe zone around the grill to keep children and pets safe.
- Open a gas grill’s lid before lighting it, and do not walk away from a lit grill.
- Clean the grill after each use to remove grease that can start a fire.
- Do not store or use a grill on a porch or balcony.
Cooking Mexican food on a small grill
A two- or three-burner grill does everything a taqueria needs on a weeknight; you just cook in a sensible order.
- Carne asada: run one burner on high and sear thin skirt or flap steak with the lid open, turning once. Rest it over the cool side while you warm tortillas, then slice across the grain.
- Pollo asado: start chicken thighs over medium with the lid down so they cook through, then finish over high to char the skin.
- Elote: grill husked corn over medium-high, turning until it blisters in spots, then dress it with mayonnaise, cotija, chile powder and lime.
- Fajitas: sear the meat on the grates and cook the peppers and onions on a griddle insert or a cast iron pan; our best fajita skillet guide covers the sizzling platters.
Small-patio grill questions, answered
What size gas grill fits a small patio?
Most full-size two- and three-burner carts run 43 to 56 inches wide and 21 to 24 inches deep, based on the figures for our picks. Add space to stand in front of it and to open the lid, and keep the clearances your manual gives from walls and railings.
Is a two-burner gas grill big enough?
For two to four people, usually yes. A two-burner like the Monument Mesa 200S gives you a hot and a cool side. If you often cook for five or more, a compact three-burner adds a third zone for a few inches more width.
Can I use a gas grill on an apartment balcony?
Often not. NFPA 1 bars grills on balconies, under overhangs and within 10 feet of any structure for buildings other than one- and two-family homes, though local codes vary. Check with your landlord, HOA and fire marshal first.
What is the difference between a small gas grill and a portable one?
The grills here are full-size carts on wheels that stay on the patio. Portable and tabletop grills are lighter, sit on a table or folding legs and often run on small one-pound bottles. See our best tabletop gas grill and best portable grill guides for those.
Do folding side shelves really save space?
Yes, when the grill is stored. The Kenmore’s listing gives 51 inches with the tables up and 32.5 inches folded. The saving only helps between cookouts; you still need the full width while you cook.
Our final pick for a small patio
Buy the Broil King Royal 320 Shadow if you want three burners, cast iron and a long warranty in a compact frame. Choose the Monument Mesa 200S for two people, the Kenmore 3-Burner if the grill must fold away, the Charbroil Pro Series for a grill and griddle in one, and the Permasteel 2-Burner if every inch counts. For more sizes and fuels, our best gas grill guide covers the full range, and the best small gas grill picks include carry-size models.
