Plenty of kitchens have less room above the stove than a standard hood expects. A cabinet hung low over the range, a microwave cabinet that came out during a remodel, an apartment kitchen with short uppers: in each case a deep, boxy hood either eats the cabinet space or hangs so low that you knock your head on it while you stir a pot of frijoles. A low-profile hood is the fix. These are under-cabinet hoods about five and a half to six inches tall, so they tuck under the cabinet and leave the cooktop clear.
Being thin is not the same as being weak, though. Charring poblanos, toasting chiles on a comal and searing carne asada still put real smoke into the room, so this guide gives every hood’s height and airflow exactly as its maker or Amazon listing states them, and is honest where a listing leaves a number out. All eight picks vent outdoors through a duct; several can also recirculate with a kit.

Quick verdict: which low-profile hood to buy
For most 30-inch ranges, the pick is the COSMO Haven 6-Inch Slim Under-Cabinet Range Hood (COS-KS6U30): the listing gives it a 6-inch height, 500 CFM, three speeds, a remote and dishwasher-safe permanent filters, and it plugs into a standard outlet. If you fry and sear hard and can run a proper duct, the Proline 6-Inch 1,000 CFM Under-Cabinet Range Hood moves twice the air at the same height. If every fraction of an inch counts, the COSMO Delta 30-Inch Slim Range Hood in Matte Black is listed at 5.3 inches tall.
This page narrows our main guide to the best under cabinet range hood down to the slim models. That guide’s top picks stand roughly 8 to 10 inches tall, as listed; the hoods here are the ones to look at when the gap between cabinet and cooktop is tight.

Our picks for the best low profile range hood
These eight hoods are all between about 5.3 and 6 inches tall as listed, in 24-, 30- and 36-inch widths. They range from a modest 250 CFM hood for a small electric range to a 1,000 CFM hood for heavy frying. Each pick lists what its maker states, who it suits, and one honest reason to skip it.
1. COSMO Haven 6-Inch Slim Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Real Airflow in Six Inches

The COSMO COS-KS6U30 is the hood we would start with for a 30-inch range under a low cabinet. The listing gives its size as 30 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 6 inches high, which is two to four inches shorter than a typical under-cabinet hood, and it still claims 500 CFM through three fan speeds.
The details suit a cook who makes real smoke. COSMO uses its ARC-FLOW permanent filters, which it says are dishwasher-safe and never need replacing; the body is 430-grade, 18-gauge brushed stainless steel; and soft-touch controls plus a wireless remote run the fan and the 1.5-watt LED lights. The 22-inch depth is worth noting: it reaches further over the front burners than the shallower hoods on this page, which helps when the pan you are searing in sits up front.
It runs on 110 volts with a three-prong plug, so it can go into an outlet in the cabinet above, and it exhausts through a 6-inch round duct. COSMO states noise as low as 45 dB on the lowest speed with rigid ducting; expect more on high.
Why we like it
- 6-inch height with 500 CFM, as listed
- Permanent, dishwasher-safe filters
- Remote and soft-touch controls
- Plug-in power, 6-inch round duct
Key specifications
| Model | COSMO Haven COS-KS6U30 |
|---|---|
| Width | 30 in |
| Height (as listed) | 6 in (22 in deep) |
| CFM (as listed) | 500 CFM, 3 speeds |
| Venting | Ducted, 6-inch round |
| Filters | ARC-FLOW permanent filters, dishwasher-safe |
| Noise (as stated) | As low as 45 dB on lowest speed, rigid duct |
| Warranty | 2-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits most 30-inch ranges under a low cabinet where you can vent outdoors, and it gives the best balance of slim height, airflow and easy cleaning here.
Skip it if you cannot run a duct: the listing describes it as a ducted hood and does not mention a recirculating kit.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong stated airflow for its height
- Filters go in the dishwasher
- Deeper body covers front burners
Cons
- Ducted only, per the listing
- Noise on high not stated
2. Proline 6-Inch 1,000 CFM Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Heavy Airflow, Slim Body

The Proline PLJW 102.30 is for the cook who fries chiles rellenos and sears meat often and wants the most air a slim hood can move. The title states it plainly: 30 inches wide, 6 inches tall, ducted, with a 1,000 CFM dual blower. That is twice the stated airflow of our top pick in the same height.
The listing describes dishwasher-safe filters that pop out, LED lights and a control panel with buttons for fan speed, light and power, and it gives the noise at maximum speed as 7 sones. The warranty is listed as three years. One inconsistency: the title calls it an under-cabinet hood, while one line of the feature text calls it wall-mounted. Ask the seller or Proline which mounting it supports before you plan the install.
Airflow on this scale brings obligations. A 1,000 CFM hood needs a properly sized duct run, and the International Residential Code requires make-up air for kitchen exhaust systems over 400 CFM where that code is adopted. Budget for a licensed installer.
Why we like it
- 1,000 CFM dual blower, as listed
- 6-inch height
- Dishwasher-safe filters
- 3-year warranty, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | Proline PLJW 102.30 |
|---|---|
| Width | 30 in |
| Height (as listed) | 6 in |
| CFM (as listed) | 1,000 CFM, dual blower |
| Venting | Ducted |
| Filters | Dishwasher-safe filters (type not stated) |
| Noise (as stated) | 7 sones at maximum speed |
| Warranty | 3 years |
Why we recommend it
It suits cooks who make heavy smoke and grease and have, or will install, ducting and make-up air sized for a big hood.
Skip it if this is a simple swap in an apartment: the airflow is more than most small kitchens need, and the install is not a one-person job.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Highest stated airflow on this page
- Same slim height as the top pick
- Three-year warranty listed
Cons
- Likely needs make-up air under code
- Listing mixes under-cabinet and wall-mount wording
- Duct size not stated in the listing
3. COSMO Delta 30-Inch Slim Range Hood, Matte Black – The Thinnest Body Here

The COSMO COS-5U30-BK is the slimmest hood we found from an established maker: the listing gives 29.5 inches wide, 18.8 inches deep and just 5.3 inches high. COSMO markets it for condos and apartments, and the matte black finish is a change from the stainless that dominates this category.
It vents through the top or the back via a 4¾-inch round duct, and it converts to ductless with COSMO’s CFK3-TM carbon filter kit, sold separately. Inside are reusable multi-layer aluminum mesh filters, a three-speed motor on push buttons, and LED lighting. COSMO gives the noise as low as 40 dB on the lowest speed with rigid ducting, and the hood ships with flexible duct for convenience.
The listing does not state the airflow in CFM, which is the main gap. The small duct size and the slim body suggest a modest hood suited to everyday cooking rather than heavy frying, but treat that as a judgment, not a stated figure.
Why we like it
- 5.3 inches tall, as listed
- Top or back venting
- Converts to ductless with a kit
- Matte black finish
Key specifications
| Model | COSMO Delta COS-5U30-BK |
|---|---|
| Width | 29.5 in |
| Height (as listed) | 5.3 in (18.8 in deep) |
| CFM (as listed) | Not stated in listing; 3 speeds |
| Venting | Ducted top or back, 4¾-inch round; ductless with CFK3-TM kit |
| Filters | Reusable multi-layer aluminum mesh |
| Noise (as stated) | As low as 40 dB on lowest speed, rigid duct |
| Warranty | 2-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits the tightest gaps and kitchens with dark cabinets or black appliances, where everyday cooking matters more than maximum airflow.
Skip it if you sear and fry at high heat every day: the airflow is not stated, and the small duct limits what any fan can push.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Thinnest listed height on this page
- Vents two ways or recirculates
- Low stated noise on low speed
Cons
- CFM not stated
- Small 4¾-inch duct
- Carbon kit costs extra

4. Broan-NuTone 24-Inch Glacier Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Quiet Fit for Small Ranges

Apartment ranges and compact cooktops are often 24 inches wide, and most slim hoods are 30. The Broan-NuTone GLA1243SS fills that gap. Our parent guide recommends the 30-inch version of this hood (GLA1303SS) as its easiest install; this is the same Glacier design at 24 inches, which is why it earns a place here rather than repeating that pick. Retailers AJ Madison and Abt list it at 6 inches tall.
Broan-NuTone gives it 350 max blower CFM and 1.5 sones at working speed, with hidden rocker switches for two fan speeds and one light level. The bottom is fully enclosed for easy wiping, and two dishwasher-safe micro filters sit behind it. Included EZ1 brackets are meant to let one person hang it.
It is flexible: vent through the top or the rear, or run it non-ducted with the HPF30 charcoal filter, sold separately. It is ENERGY STAR certified and Title 24 compliant with electric ranges only, and it can pair with Broan’s optional make-up air dampers.
Why we like it
- Sized for 24-inch ranges
- 1.5 sones at working speed, as stated
- Top, rear or non-ducted installation
- One-person EZ1 brackets
Key specifications
| Model | Broan-NuTone GLA1243SS |
|---|---|
| Width | 24 in |
| Height (as listed) | 6 in, per retailers (not in Amazon listing) |
| CFM (as listed) | 350 max blower CFM, 2 speeds |
| Venting | Top or rear ducted; non-ducted with HPF30 filter |
| Filters | 2 dishwasher-safe micro filters |
| Noise (as stated) | 1.5 sones at working speed |
| Warranty | 1 year |
Why we recommend it
It suits small kitchens with a 24-inch range, especially renters or first-time installers who want a quiet hood from a well-known maker.
Skip it if your range is 30 inches wide: a hood narrower than the cooktop misses smoke from the outer burners.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Low stated noise
- Three ways to install
- Enclosed bottom is easy to wipe
Cons
- Only two fan speeds
- One-year warranty
- Height not in the Amazon listing
5. COSMO Delta 36-Inch Slim Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Covers a Wider Range

Our under-cabinet guide names the 30-inch COSMO Delta (COS-5MU30) its slim and budget pick. We include its 36-inch sibling, the COS-5MU36, because wide ranges are where slim hoods are hardest to find, and this one keeps the same thin body. The listing gives 35.25 inches wide, 19.75 inches deep and 5.5 inches high.
COSMO says it fits under most cabinets or against a wall, and vents through the top or back via a 5-inch round duct; a CFK4 carbon filter kit, sold separately, converts it to ductless. A three-speed motor runs on push buttons, the filters are reusable aluminum mesh, and the lighting is LED. The stated noise is as low as 50 dB on the lowest speed with rigid ducting. It plugs into a standard three-prong outlet, and COSMO notes that HVAC tape is required for installation.
As with its 30-inch sibling, the listing does not give an airflow figure. For a 36-inch range with big pots, that is the one number we would want; check with COSMO before buying if you cook with high heat.
Why we like it
- 36 inches wide, 5.5 inches tall
- Top or back venting
- Ductless kit available
- Plug-in power
Key specifications
| Model | COSMO Delta COS-5MU36 |
|---|---|
| Width | 35.25 in |
| Height (as listed) | 5.5 in (19.75 in deep) |
| CFM (as listed) | Not stated in listing; 3 speeds |
| Venting | Ducted top or back, 5-inch round; ductless with CFK4 kit |
| Filters | Reusable aluminum mesh |
| Noise (as stated) | As low as 50 dB on lowest speed, rigid duct |
| Warranty | 2-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits 36-inch ranges under a low cabinet in kitchens where the cooking is everyday rather than heavy frying.
Skip it if you want a stated airflow figure: the listing does not give one, and the 5-inch duct is small for a wide range.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Rare slim option at 36 inches
- Two venting directions
- Plugs into an outlet
Cons
- CFM not stated
- Mesh filters, not baffles
- Carbon kit sold separately
6. Proline 6-Inch 600 CFM Under-Cabinet Range Hood – A Middle Ground on Power

The Proline PLSW 185.30 sits between our top pick and the 1,000 CFM Proline. The title gives a 30-inch width, a 6-inch height, ducted venting and a 600 CFM dual blower, from Proline’s Dream Home Series. That is a meaningful step up from the 500 CFM COSMO without the full demands of a 1,000 CFM system.
The listing describes stainless steel construction, LED lights, dishwasher-safe filters that pop out, and a control panel with buttons for fan speed, lighting and power. Two figures need a caution. The listing gives the noise at maximum speed as 13 sones, while the 36-inch version of the same series lists 7 sones; one of those is likely an error, so ask Proline before you count on either. And like the 1,000 CFM model, one feature line calls it wall-mounted although the title says under-cabinet.
At 600 CFM it is also above the 400 CFM point at which the International Residential Code calls for make-up air, so plan the install with a professional.
Why we like it
- 600 CFM dual blower, as listed
- 6-inch height
- Dishwasher-safe filters
- Also sold in a 36-inch width
Key specifications
| Model | Proline PLSW 185.30 6″ |
|---|---|
| Width | 30 in |
| Height (as listed) | 6 in |
| CFM (as listed) | 600 CFM, dual blower |
| Venting | Ducted |
| Filters | Dishwasher-safe filters (type not stated) |
| Noise (as stated) | 13 sones at maximum speed (see caution above) |
| Warranty | Not stated in this listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits cooks who want more airflow than the COSMO but less than a 1,000 CFM hood, in the same 6-inch height.
Skip it if a quiet kitchen matters to you until Proline confirms the noise figure; the listing’s 13 sones would be loud.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong stated airflow
- Slim 6-inch body
- Filters go in the dishwasher
Cons
- Conflicting noise figures across the series
- Warranty not stated in this listing
- Likely needs make-up air under code

7. Hauslane 30-Inch Slim Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Baffle Filters, Three Ways to Vent

The Hauslane UC-B018 is listed at 29¾ inches wide, 19¾ inches deep and 5⅞ inches tall, so it fits where a standard Hauslane under-cabinet hood would not. It is not the Hauslane model our parent guide recommends; that one is a deeper 36-inch hood.
Its strength is installation flexibility. Hauslane gives three venting routes: vertical through a 6-inch round duct, or a 3¼ by 10-inch rectangular duct going either up or out the back, with both a rectangular adapter and a 7-inch round adapter in the box. Add Hauslane’s charcoal filters, sold separately, and it runs ductless. The listing names two dishwasher-safe baffle filters, though another line describes a hybrid filter with aluminum layers, so the exact filter type is worth confirming.
The listing does not give a CFM figure, and its color field says glossy white while the title says stainless steel; check the photos and the finish option before ordering. Hauslane backs it with a two-year limited warranty and a lifetime warranty on the motor.
Why we like it
- 5⅞ inches tall, as listed
- Three duct routes, two adapters included
- Converts to ductless
- Lifetime motor warranty
Key specifications
| Model | Hauslane UC-B018 |
|---|---|
| Width | 29¾ in |
| Height (as listed) | 5⅞ in (19¾ in deep) |
| CFM (as listed) | Not stated in listing |
| Venting | 6-inch round vertical or 3¼ x 10 in vertical/horizontal; ductless with charcoal filters |
| Filters | 2 dishwasher-safe baffle filters, per listing |
| Noise (as stated) | Not stated |
| Warranty | 2-year limited; lifetime on motor |
Why we recommend it
It suits a replacement job where you do not know what duct is in the wall yet, since it adapts to round or rectangular ducting and can recirculate.
Skip it if you need a stated airflow or noise figure before you buy; this listing gives neither.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Most duct options on this page
- Lifetime motor warranty
- Slim at under 6 inches
Cons
- CFM and noise not stated
- Listing is unclear on finish and filter type
8. Zephyr Breeze I 30-Inch Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Simple and Gentle

The Zephyr Breeze I (AK1100B) is the modest hood on this list. Zephyr describes a “low-profile body,” and retailer AJ Madison lists the stainless AK1100BS at 5½ inches tall. Its three-speed blower is rated at 250 CFM, the lowest stated figure here.
That is enough for an electric range, eggs, beans and reheating, less so for a cast iron pan of fajitas. What it does well is the basics: Zephyr’s dual-level LumiLight LED lights, which it rates at more than 25,000 hours, dishwasher-safe aluminum mesh filters that Zephyr says are wider than usual for better capture, and integrated controls. It vents out the top or the back, and a ductless recirculating kit is available when venting outside is not possible.
It is not the Zephyr our parent guide recommends (that is the deeper Pyramid). The Amazon listing gives the warranty as one year of labor.
Why we like it
- About 5½ inches tall, per retailers
- Dual-level LED lighting
- Top or back venting, ductless kit available
- Dishwasher-safe filters
Key specifications
| Model | Zephyr Breeze I AK1100B |
|---|---|
| Width | 30 in |
| Height (as listed) | 5½ in, per AJ Madison (not in Amazon listing) |
| CFM (as listed) | 250 CFM, 3 speeds |
| Venting | Top or back; recirculating kit available |
| Filters | Dishwasher-safe aluminum mesh |
| Noise (as stated) | Not stated in listing |
| Warranty | 1 year labor, per listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits a small kitchen with an electric range and light everyday cooking, where a slim, quiet-running hood matters more than raw airflow.
Skip it if you char chiles or sear meat often: 250 CFM is the lowest stated airflow on this page.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Slim body from a known maker
- Good LED lighting
- Flexible venting
Cons
- Lowest stated CFM here
- Height comes from a retailer, not the listing
How to choose a slim hood for a tight space
A low-profile hood is still a range hood. The same rules apply, with a few that matter more when the space is tight.
Measure the gap first
Measure from the cooktop surface to the underside of the cabinet, then subtract the hood’s listed height. What remains is the space between the burners and the bottom of the hood. Every maker sets a minimum distance, often different for gas and electric, and it is in the installation manual. A slim hood is how you meet that minimum without cutting the cabinet; it does not let you ignore it.
Width should match or beat the cooktop
Buy a hood at least as wide as the range: 24 inches for a 24-inch range, 30 for 30, 36 for 36. Smoke drifts outward from the edge burners, and a narrow hood misses it. Depth matters too. The COSMO Haven is 22 inches deep and reaches further over the front burners than the 18- to 20-inch hoods here.

Airflow and duct size go together
CFM is cubic feet of air per minute. A slim body often means a smaller duct connection: the COSMO Delta hoods use 4¾- and 5-inch round ducts, while the COSMO Haven uses 6-inch. A small duct limits how much air any fan can push. More airflow is not automatically better, either: the EPA notes that high-airflow hoods can cause combustion appliances to backdraft, and the International Residential Code requires make-up air for exhaust systems over 400 CFM where it applies. Both Proline hoods are above that line.
Vent outdoors if you can
The EPA says the best choice is a hood that vents outdoors rather than one that only recirculates. Several hoods here convert to ductless with a carbon kit, which helps in apartments, but for ductless-first options see our guide to the best non-vented range hood.
No cabinet above at all?
If there is no cabinet over the stove, a slim under-cabinet hood is the wrong tool. Look at the best wall-mount range hoods, or, if you are building a custom hood enclosure, a range hood insert.
How we picked these eight slim hoods
We searched Amazon for under-cabinet hoods from established makers (COSMO, Proline, Broan-NuTone, Hauslane and Zephyr) with a stated height of about 6 inches or less, then checked each with Amazon’s product data for stock, model number, dimensions, airflow, venting, filters, noise and warranty. Every pick was in stock when we checked. Where the Amazon listing left out the height, we used published retailer specifications for the same model and say so. Where a listing contradicted itself, we report the conflict instead of picking a number.
We left out hoods that are already picks on our under-cabinet, wall-mount, non-vented and insert guides, except the two whose sister models appear there, and we explain each of those. We looked for slide-out hoods from Broan and FOTILE, but the ones we found were listed with only a few left in stock, so they are not included. We also left out unbranded sellers. We searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall listings and found no recall notices for these hood models. EPA guidance on cooking and indoor air informed the buying advice. We did not test these hoods; specifications are as each maker, listing or named retailer states.

Slim range hood questions, answered
How tall is a low-profile range hood?
The hoods on this page are listed between 5.3 and 6 inches tall. The picks in our under-cabinet guide run from just under 8 to about 10 inches; the COSMO Haven UMC30 there, for example, is listed at 9¾ inches.
Do slim hoods move less air?
Not necessarily. The Proline hoods are listed at 600 and 1,000 CFM in a 6-inch body. But slim hoods often use smaller duct connections, and several listings here do not state CFM at all, so check before you buy.
What is the best low profile range hood for a 36-inch range?
Among the hoods here, the COSMO Delta COS-5MU36 is listed at 5.5 inches tall and 35.25 inches wide. Proline also sells its 6-inch, 600 CFM hood in a 36-inch width.
Can I install a low-profile hood myself?
Plug-in models such as the COSMO hoods can often go into an existing outlet in the cabinet above, and Broan-NuTone’s EZ1 brackets are designed for one person. New ductwork, hardwiring, a new circuit or make-up air is work for a licensed installer or electrician where local codes require it.
How long should I run the hood?
The EPA recommends turning on the hood whenever you cook and leaving it on for 10 to 20 minutes after you finish, and cooking on the back burners when you can.
Our final pick for a tight kitchen
For most 30-inch ranges with a low cabinet above, the COSMO Haven COS-KS6U30 is the slim hood to start with: 6 inches tall, 500 CFM as listed, and filters that go in the dishwasher. If you fry and sear hard and can duct and supply make-up air properly, the 1,000 CFM Proline gives the most airflow at the same height. For a 24-inch range, the Broan-NuTone GLA1243SS; for a 36-inch range, the COSMO Delta COS-5MU36.
If you have more height to play with, our full guide to the best under cabinet range hood covers deeper hoods with more features.
