Pump, Valve or Zipper? Best Reusable Vacuum Seal Bags for Food

Seven reusable vacuum bags and pump kits compared on pump fit, sous vide and freezer limits and care, plus what vacuum sealing can't do for food safety.

Ground chiles and spices sold by the bag, the kind of pantry staple that keeps better with the air pressed out.

Most vacuum seal bags are used once. You heat-seal the bag shut, freeze it, cut it open, and it goes in the trash. Reusable vacuum bags work differently: they close with a zipper, and a small one-way valve on the face of the bag lets a pump pull the air out. Open it, take what you need, zip it shut and pump it again. For the things a Mexican kitchen dips into all week, such as shredded cheese, sliced jalapeños, a block of queso fresco or a bag of dried chiles, that is the whole point.

The catch is that each reusable bag is built around a pump. Some makers sell the pump and bags as a system, some sell bags for any valve pump, and a few sell zipper bags you seal on a countertop machine. This guide sorts seven picks by how they are pumped, what the maker says they can handle (freezer, microwave, sous vide, dishwasher), and what vacuum sealing cannot do for food safety.

Quick verdict: which reusable bags to buy

For most kitchens, the best reusable vacuum seal bags for food come in the Zwilling Fresh & Save Vacuum Starter Set, 6-Piece: a rechargeable pump, four zipper bags and a glass container, from a system Zwilling sells refill bags for in several sizes. If you already own a FoodSaver handheld sealer, buy the FoodSaver Reusable Gallon Vacuum Zipper Bags. If you want a cordless pump with a big supply of bags in one box, the Chef Preserve Compact Vacuum Sealer with 30 Bags. If you own a countertop edge sealer and only want a bag you can reopen, the Nesco Vacuum Sealer Quart Zipper Bags.

This page sits under our main guide to the best vacuum seal bags, which covers the single-use rolls and precut bags most edge sealers take. Here the angle is narrower: bags you wash and use again, and the pumps that go with them.

Our picks for the best reusable vacuum seal bags for food

Six of these seven picks are valve-and-zipper bags that a pump empties through the valve: two Zwilling packs, a FoodSaver pack, and three cordless pump kits with bags in the box. The seventh is a zipper bag for countertop edge sealers, for cooks who already own one. None of these products appear on our main vacuum seal bag page, apart from FoodSaver as a brand; the reason is explained in that pick.

1. Zwilling Fresh & Save Vacuum Starter Set, 6-Piece – Pump, Bags and Glass in One Box

Best overallZwilling Fresh & Save Vacuum Sealer Marchine Starter Set

Zwilling’s Fresh & Save is a full system rather than a bag pack. This starter set includes a rechargeable vacuum pump, two small and two medium zipper bags, and one large glass storage container with a valve in the lid, per the listing. You zip the bag shut, set the pump on the valve and press the button; the same pump empties the container.

Zwilling states that the bags are BPA-free plastic with a silicone valve, that they are freezer safe and dishwasher safe, and that they can go in the microwave without the vacuum on. On its own site Zwilling lists Fresh & Save bags (on its large bag set page) at a heat resistance of 197.6°F and a cold resistance of -0.4°F, and says they suit sous vide cooking. That ceiling is high enough for most sous vide cooks, though not for the hottest vegetable baths some recipes call for.

The reason this set leads is the refills: Zwilling sells Fresh & Save bags in small, medium and large packs and a 30-piece assortment (pick 2), so the system grows with you. The listing also says the bags can marinate meat under vacuum in about 30 minutes, which suits carne asada or pollo asado on a weeknight.

Why we like it

  • Pump, bags and a glass container in one set.
  • Bags are dishwasher safe, per the listing.
  • Heat resistance stated at 197.6°F by Zwilling.
  • Refill bags sold in several sizes.

Key specifications

Model 36806-005
Type Zipper bags with valve, plus container
In the box Pump, 2 small and 2 medium bags, 1 large glass container
Pump Rechargeable Zwilling pump, included
Sous vide (maker) Yes; heat resistance 197.6°F
Freezer Yes; cold resistance -0.4°F
Microwave Yes, without vacuum
Dishwasher Bags yes, per listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook starting from nothing who wants one pump for bags and containers, and a brand that will still sell matching refills next year.

Skip it if you mainly want lots of bags: four come in the box, so plan on buying a refill pack.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Complete system in one purchase.
  • Dishwasher-safe bags.
  • Stated sous vide and freezer limits.

Cons

  • Only four bags included.
  • Bags are built around Zwilling’s own pump.

2. Zwilling Fresh & Save Vacuum Bags, 30-Piece – Refills in Mixed Sizes

Best refill packZwilling Fresh & Save 30-Pc Vacuum Sealer Bags

Once you own a Zwilling pump, this is the pack that keeps the system running. The 30-piece set is an assortment of Fresh & Save zipper bags sized, in Zwilling’s words, for pre-prepped recipe ingredients, sandwiches or fresh fruit. In a Mexican kitchen that means the small jobs: half an onion, a handful of cilantro, sliced jalapeños, a wedge of cotija.

The listing states the bags are BPA-free, microwave and freezer safe, and made to work with the Zwilling vacuum pump, which is sold separately. It also mentions an included liquid barrier, meant to stop juices being drawn into the pump when you seal something wet, such as meat in a marinade. That is a detail worth having: liquid in a handheld pump is the usual way these pumps fail.

Zwilling’s own site lists its Fresh & Save bags at a heat resistance of 197.6°F and a cold resistance of -0.4°F. Those figures appear on its large bag set page, so check the packaging of this pack if you cook near that limit.

Why we like it

  • 30 bags in assorted sizes.
  • Liquid barrier included, per the listing.
  • Microwave and freezer safe, per the listing.

Key specifications

Model 1031925
Type Zipper bags with valve
In the box 30 bags, assorted sizes; liquid barrier
Pump Zwilling pump, sold separately
Sous vide (maker) Yes; heat resistance 197.6°F
Freezer Yes; cold resistance -0.4°F
Microwave Yes, per listing
Dishwasher Not stated on this listing

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who already owns the Zwilling pump, or who buys Zwilling’s handheld pump on its own and wants a full drawer of bags to go with it.

Skip it if you have no Zwilling pump; the listing ties these bags to it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lots of bags for the money spent on a system.
  • Mixed sizes.
  • Liquid barrier for wet foods.

Cons

  • Pump not included.
  • Exact sizes in the mix not listed.

3. FoodSaver Reusable Gallon Vacuum Zipper Bags, 8 Count – Big Bags for the Handheld

Best for FoodSaver handheldsFoodSaver® Reusable Gallon Vacuum Zipper Bags

Our main bag guide picks FoodSaver’s 70-count quart zipper bags. This is a different product from FoodSaver’s separate reusable line, and it is here for a different reason: it is the gallon size, which holds a whole flat of cooked beans, a stack of tortillas or a family-size portion of shredded chicken. FoodSaver is the brand most handheld-sealer owners already have, so a bag made for that sealer belongs on this page.

FoodSaver describes the bags as BPA-free and multilayer, with a valve designed for safe use in the freezer, the microwave and for sous vide cooking, and says they can go straight from freezer to sous vide bath. The maker says to wash them by hand. The pack includes eight bags and a zipper clip to help get the zipper fully closed, and FoodSaver says the bags perform best with its own handheld sealer.

FoodSaver does not state a maximum sous vide temperature on this listing, so for long, hot cooks check the packaging. The quart version (10 bags) is sold separately.

Why we like it

  • Gallon size for big portions.
  • Freezer, microwave and sous vide use, per FoodSaver.
  • Zipper clip included.

Key specifications

Model 2144085
Type Zipper bags with valve
In the box 8 gallon bags, zipper clip
Pump FoodSaver handheld sealer, sold separately
Sous vide (maker) Yes; maximum temperature not stated
Freezer Yes
Microwave Yes
Dishwasher Hand wash, per maker

Why we recommend it

It suits FoodSaver handheld owners who need room for bigger portions than a quart bag holds.

Skip it if you have no FoodSaver handheld; the maker says the bags work best with it, and only eight come in the pack.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Large capacity.
  • Freezer to sous vide in one bag.
  • Widely sold brand.

Cons

  • Hand wash only.
  • Small count per pack.
  • No stated temperature limit.

4. Chef Preserve Compact Vacuum Sealer with 30 Bags – One Button, Thirty Bags

Best cordless kitChef Preserve Compact Vacuum Sealer for Food (Vacuum Sealer Machine + 30 Reusable Vacuum Bags) Powerful Handheld Vacuum Sealer Machine

Chef Preserve sells a cordless pump about the size of a pepper grinder, per the listing, with 30 reusable zipper bags in the box: 15 small and 15 medium, packed in three sets of ten. You press one button, the pump empties the bag in about five seconds and switches itself off, according to the maker. Chef Preserve claims a full charge seals up to 1,000 bags.

The listing says the bags are BPA-free and safe in the dishwasher, freezer, refrigerator and microwave. Chef Preserve sells refill bags on their own in small (8 x 10 inch), medium (10 x 11 inch), large (12 x 13 inch) and extra-large sizes, and its refill listing describes them as suited to sous vide, with microwave reheating done unsealed. No maximum sous vide temperature is stated.

The maker backs the pump with a two-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee. For a cook who wants many bags from day one, this is more bags in the box than any other kit here.

Why we like it

  • 30 bags included with the pump.
  • Bags are dishwasher safe, per the listing.
  • Refills sold in four sizes.
  • Two-year warranty, per the maker.

Key specifications

Model CP.V1.1
Type Zipper bags with valve
In the box Pump, 15 small and 15 medium bags
Pump Rechargeable handheld, auto shut-off
Sous vide (maker) Suited, per refill listing; maximum not stated
Freezer Yes
Microwave Yes, unsealed
Dishwasher Yes, per listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who wants a big stock of bags and a pump that lives in a drawer, for portioning cheese, chiles and leftovers through the week.

Skip it if you want hard containers too; this kit is bags only.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most bags in the box of any kit here.
  • Dishwasher-safe bags.
  • Four refill sizes.

Cons

  • No stated sous vide temperature.
  • Battery claim is the maker’s own.

5. Nesco Handheld Vacuum Sealer Kit with Canisters – Bags and Hard Containers

Best with canistersNESCO Handheld Vacuum Sealer Kit with 4 Canisters

Some foods do not belong in a bag. Tortilla chips crush, ripe avocados bruise, and a bag of salsa is awkward to scoop from. Nesco’s handheld kit answers that with four vacuum canisters, two 600 ml and two 800 ml, alongside five gallon-size zipper bags with valves, according to the listing. The cordless pump charges on its own base.

Nesco says the bags are BPA-, PVC- and phthalate-free and safe for sous vide cooking, freezing, reheating and the dishwasher. The canisters are described as reusable and suited to dry goods, produce, snacks and leftovers. No maximum sous vide temperature is given on the listing.

Five bags is a small start, so think of this kit as a pump and a set of containers with a few bags thrown in. It is a different product from the Nesco countertop sealer on our sealer page.

Why we like it

  • Four vacuum canisters plus bags.
  • Charging base for the pump.
  • Bags dishwasher and sous vide safe, per Nesco.

Key specifications

Model VS-09HHS2
Type Zipper bags with valve, plus canisters
In the box Pump, base, 2 x 600 ml and 2 x 800 ml canisters, 5 gallon bags
Pump Cordless, rechargeable on base
Sous vide (maker) Yes; maximum not stated
Freezer Yes
Microwave Reheating safe, per listing
Dishwasher Yes, per listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a kitchen that wants to vacuum-store crushable or scoopable food as well as bagged portions.

Skip it if you mainly want bags; five is not many.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Canisters for delicate food.
  • Dishwasher-safe bags.
  • Pump stands on its base.

Cons

  • Only five bags.
  • No stated temperature limits.

6. Bonsenkitchen Handheld Vacuum Sealer with 30 Bags and 3 Containers – A Water Tank for Wet Food

Best for moist foodsBonsenkitchen Handheld Vacuum Sealer with 30 Bags & 3 Containers

The weak point of any handheld pump is liquid. Seal a bag of meat in its marinade and some of it can be pulled toward the pump. Bonsenkitchen’s handheld sealer has a detachable, see-through water tank to catch it, per the listing, so you can check what it has collected and take it off to empty and clean. Its rolls appear on our main bag page; this is a different product, a pump kit with reusable bags.

The kit includes the pump, 30 reusable bags in two sizes (15 small and 15 medium, per the listing), three vacuum containers of 0.5, 0.8 and 1.4 liters with a date dial for soups and sauces, a USB-C cable and sealing clips. Bonsenkitchen describes one-touch sealing, automatic pressure release and a rechargeable battery good for hundreds of cycles per charge. The bags are described as BPA-free and double-sealed; the listing does not state suction strength, dishwasher or microwave use for them.

The listing does not mention sous vide or the freezer for these bags, so treat this kit as a fridge-and-pantry tool unless the packaging says otherwise. Check the bag care sheet in the box before washing them.

Why we like it

  • Detachable water tank for wet sealing.
  • 30 bags with double zippers.
  • Auto pressure release.
  • Three vacuum containers in the box.

Key specifications

Model HV7000-P
Type Zipper bags with valve
In the box Pump, 30 bags in two sizes, 3 containers, cable, clips
Pump Rechargeable, water tank
Sous vide (maker) Not stated
Freezer Not stated (fridge safe)
Microwave Not stated
Dishwasher Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who often seal marinated meat or juicy produce for the fridge and want the pump protected from liquid.

Skip it if you plan to cook sous vide in the bags; the listing does not say they are rated for it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Protects the pump from juices.
  • Plenty of bags.
  • Containers for soups and sauces.

Cons

  • Sous vide and freezer use not stated.
  • Bag care and suction not stated.

7. Nesco Vacuum Sealer Quart Zipper Bags, 50 Count – Reopen Without Cutting

Best for edge sealersNesco Vacuum Sealer Quart Zipper Bags - 50 Count - 8" x 12"

If you already own a countertop edge sealer, you do not need a pump at all. These Nesco quart bags are heat-sealed in the machine like any other vacuum bag, but they also have a zipper, so foods you reach for daily can be opened and closed again. Nesco says they are made for pantry items and refrigerated foods you access often.

The bags are 8 x 12 inches, 50 to a pack, and made of multilayer, tear-resistant material with cross-vented air channels that Nesco says divert flowing liquids. The maker states they are safe in the microwave, refrigerator and freezer, for marinating and boiling, and for sous vide. They work with Nesco and other brands of vacuum sealer, per the listing.

Be clear about what “reusable” means here. The zipper recloses the bag, but it is not a vacuum seal on its own; to pull the air out again you run it back through the sealer. Nesco does not say how many times a bag can be resealed.

Why we like it

  • No extra pump needed with an edge sealer.
  • Zipper for daily access.
  • Boil, microwave, freezer and sous vide use, per Nesco.
  • 50 bags per pack.

Key specifications

Model VSBQ-Z50
Type Heat-seal bags with zipper
In the box 50 quart bags, 8 x 12 in
Pump Nesco or other edge sealer, not included
Sous vide (maker) Yes; maximum not stated
Freezer Yes
Microwave Yes
Dishwasher Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits edge-sealer owners who want a bag they can open and close for cheese, deli meat or dried chiles without cutting a new one each time.

Skip it if you have no countertop sealer; these bags have no valve for a handheld pump.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Works with the sealer you own.
  • Large count.
  • Stated safe for boiling and sous vide.

Cons

  • Zipper alone does not hold a vacuum.
  • Reseal count not stated.

What a vacuum bag can’t do for food safety

Pulling air out of a bag slows freezer burn and keeps cheese and produce fresher in the fridge. It does not make perishable food safe to keep at room temperature, and the low-oxygen pocket it creates has a risk of its own.

Clemson Cooperative Extension’s guide to vacuum packaging foods at home explains that the bacteria behind botulism grow at room temperature in low-acid, moist foods in a low-oxygen environment, which is exactly what a sealed bag of cooked beans, meat or vegetables can be. Clemson says vacuum packaging is not a substitute for safely processing perishable foods meant to be stored at room temperature, that vacuum-packed perishables must stay refrigerated (34 to 40°F) or frozen, and that thawed vacuum-packed food should never be left out.

NC State Extension’s note on vacuum packing adds that these bacteria may not change how the food looks, that vacuum-packed perishable food should spend no more than two hours in total above 40°F, and, quoting the former director of the National Center for Home Food Preservation, that vacuum packaging is not a substitute for the heat processing of home-canned food.

In practice: seal it, then refrigerate or freeze it straight away; thaw in the fridge; and treat a vacuum bag of salsa, beans or carnitas exactly as you would the same food in a container.

How to choose reusable vacuum bags

Start with the pump you own

Valve bags are not universal. Zwilling’s bags are made for its pump, FoodSaver says its reusable bags work best with its handheld, and Chef Preserve and Nesco sell bags for their own pumps. If you own a countertop edge sealer, a zipper heat-seal bag like Nesco’s is the simpler route. If you own nothing yet, buy a kit with the pump and bags together.

Check the stated temperatures

For sous vide, look for a stated heat limit. Zwilling gives one (197.6°F); most others only say “sous vide safe.” For long, low cooks that is usually enough, but if a recipe calls for a very hot bath, buy the bag with a number on it. Our guide to the best sous vide covers the circulators.

Decide how you will clean them

Dishwasher-safe bags (Zwilling, Chef Preserve, Nesco’s kit bags) are easier to keep in rotation. FoodSaver’s reusable bags are hand wash, per the maker. Turn bags inside out to dry fully before storing.

Match the bag size to the food

Quart and smaller bags suit cheese, chiles and single portions; gallon bags take a flat of beans or a family meal. A kit with two sizes covers most weeks.

Plan for wet foods

Marinades and juicy produce are hard on handheld pumps. A liquid barrier (Zwilling) or water tank (Bonsenkitchen) helps; otherwise freeze wet food flat for an hour before pumping.

How we chose these seven reusable bags

We started from the brands buyers ask about for reusable vacuum bags, including FoodSaver, Zwilling, Vacuvita, Ziploc, Anova and Stasher, and checked each against Amazon’s current listings for stock. Vacuvita’s bags were not available (only its containers, in short supply), we could not find Ziploc’s vacuum bag system sold on Amazon, Anova’s bags on Amazon are single-use heat-seal bags and rolls, and Stasher’s silicone bags, covered in our reusable freezer bags guide, do not state vacuum-pump compatibility on the listing we checked. We left out anonymous Amazon-only bag packs and products already picked on our main bag and sealer pages.

The details come from each maker’s listing and, for Zwilling, its own site. The food-safety guidance comes from Clemson and NC State extension services. We have not used these products ourselves; nothing here claims otherwise. Every pick was in stock when we wrote this, and we checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s site for recalls on these brands’ vacuum products and found none.

Reusable vacuum bag questions, answered

Can you reuse vacuum seal bags that held raw meat?

The makers here present their bags as reusable and washable, but none we read gives specific guidance on reuse after raw meat. Many cooks keep separate bags for raw meat and wash them thoroughly in hot, soapy water. If a bag is torn, cloudy or will not hold a vacuum, retire it.

Do reusable vacuum bags work for sous vide?

Many do, per their makers: Zwilling (to 197.6°F), FoodSaver, Nesco and Chef Preserve all say sous vide. Bonsenkitchen does not state it for its kit bags.

How long does vacuum-sealed food last in the fridge?

Longer than in an ordinary bag, but not indefinitely, and the clock still matters for food safety. Extension services say perishable vacuum-packed food must stay refrigerated or frozen. Follow the same use-by habits you would for any leftovers; our guide to reheating Mexican leftovers covers the reheating side.

Are handheld pumps as strong as countertop sealers?

They are built for convenience, not maximum vacuum, and makers state their strength differently, and some do not state it at all. For long-term freezing of big cuts, a countertop sealer with heat-seal bags is the stronger tool; see the best vacuum sealer.

Can you microwave food in reusable vacuum bags?

Several makers say yes, but without the vacuum: Zwilling and Chef Preserve both specify opening the seal before microwaving.

The reusable bags we’d keep in the drawer

Start with the Zwilling Fresh & Save starter set if you want a system that grows, and add the 30-piece refill when you run short. Pick FoodSaver’s gallon bags if a FoodSaver handheld is already in your drawer, Chef Preserve for the most bags in one box, Nesco’s kit if you want canisters too, Bonsenkitchen if you seal a lot of marinated meat, and Nesco’s zipper bags if you already own an edge sealer. Whatever you choose, seal it and get it cold.

For single-use bags and rolls, see our main guide to the best vacuum seal bags. And if you would rather someone else did the cooking tonight, see the menu or call to order.
