Rolls, Precut or Zipper? The Best Vacuum Seal Bags

Nine vacuum seal bags and rolls compared on sealer fit, sizes, thickness and freezer, boil and sous vide use, plus the food-safety rules that still apply.

Two hands holding up a clear sealed plastic bag of food
A clear sealed bag shows exactly what is inside.

A vacuum sealer is only as good as the bags you feed it. In a Mexican kitchen the freezer fills with things worth protecting: portions of carnitas, a batch of mole poblano, roasted and peeled poblanos, dried chiles bought by the pound, cooked beans in meal-size flats. Air left in the bag is what causes freezer burn, and a bag that loses its seal in the third week undoes all the work.

The catch is that bags are not universal. Most home sealers are edge, or “clamp,” sealers that need bags with an embossed or textured side so air can be drawn out. Chamber sealers use smooth pouches. Handheld sealers need zipper bags with a valve. This guide sorts nine bags and rolls by which sealer they fit, then by size, thickness and what each maker says they can handle: boiling, the microwave, sous vide and the freezer.

Quick verdict: which vacuum seal bags to buy

For most FoodSaver and other edge-sealer owners, buy the FoodSaver Custom Length Vacuum Sealer Rolls, 5-Pack: two 8-inch and three 11-inch rolls you cut to length, which FoodSaver says are made in the USA and safe for the freezer, microwave and dishwasher. For precut bags at volume, the O2frepak Quart Vacuum Sealer Bags, 200 Count state their thickness plainly. For the most bag per box, the Wevac 11-inch x 150-foot Roll with its cutter box. If you use a handheld sealer, the FoodSaver Vacuum Zipper Quart Bags; for a chamber sealer, the Avid Armor Chamber Vacuum Sealer Bags.

If you have not chosen the machine yet, our guide to the best vacuum sealer covers edge, chamber and handheld sealers; this page is about what goes in them.

Our picks for the best vacuum seal bags

Seven of these nine products are for edge sealers, the countertop machines most home cooks own: four precut bag packs and three roll packs. One is a zipper bag for handheld sealers and one is a smooth pouch for chamber sealers. Each pick lists the sizes and count, the thickness where the maker states it, which sealers it fits, and what the maker says about the freezer, boiling, the microwave and sous vide.

1. FoodSaver Custom Length Vacuum Sealer Rolls, 5-Pack – Two Widths, Cut to Fit

Best overallFoodSaver Custom Length Vacuum Sealer Bags Multipack

Rolls are the most flexible way to buy bags: you seal one end, cut the length you need and seal again, so a single pork shoulder’s worth of carnitas, a flat of beans or a long string of dried chiles each gets a bag that fits. This FoodSaver multipack holds two 8-inch x 20-foot rolls and three 11-inch x 16-foot rolls, so you have a narrow width for single portions and a wide one for bigger cuts.

FoodSaver says the rolls are made in the USA, BPA free (the maker’s claim), and safe for raw and cooked food in the freezer, refrigerator and microwave, and in the dishwasher. The maker says they work with FoodSaver vacuum sealing systems; many FoodSaver machines have a built-in roll holder and cutter.

The listing does not state the thickness, and it does not say whether the rolls work with other brands of sealer. If your sealer is not a FoodSaver, the Wevac or Bonsenkitchen rolls below state wider compatibility.

Why we like it

  • Two widths in one pack: 8 inch and 11 inch.
  • Made in the USA, per FoodSaver.
  • Freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe, per maker.
  • Made for FoodSaver machines, including built-in roll storage.

Key specifications

Thickness (as stated) Not stated
Embossed/channel Multilayer heat-seal rolls; texture not described
Fits which sealers FoodSaver vacuum sealing systems
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Microwave and dishwasher safe; sous vide in product name
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It is the easy choice for FoodSaver owners who want the bag to fit the food, in the two widths most portions need.

Skip it if you use a different brand of sealer; FoodSaver only promises compatibility with its own machines.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Custom lengths waste less bag.
  • Two widths.
  • Made in the USA.

Cons

  • Thickness not stated.
  • Compatibility stated only for FoodSaver.

2. O2frepak Quart Vacuum Sealer Bags, 200 Count – Thickness Stated, Clamp-Sealer Fit

Best precut bagsO2frepak Quart 8"x12" Vacuum Sealer Bags 200ct for Food Storage

Precut bags save the step of sealing one end of a roll, which adds up when you are portioning a whole batch of mole or a case of chicken thighs. O2frepak’s pack holds 200 quart-size bags, 8 x 12 inches, and the maker says they are compatible with all “clamp style” vacuum sealers, which covers FoodSaver, Nesco, Weston and most other countertop edge sealers.

O2frepak is unusually specific about construction: food-grade PA and PE film, a 3.5-mil smooth front panel and a 4-mil textured back panel with embossed channels that let the sealer draw air out. The maker says the bags are suitable for raw and cooked food and safe to freeze, boil, microwave and wash in the dishwasher, and describes them as BPA free.

A quart bag holds a meal-size portion for two to four people, laid flat. For bigger cuts you will want O2frepak’s gallon size, sold separately.

Why we like it

  • 200 bags in one box.
  • Thickness stated: 3.5-mil front, 4-mil textured back.
  • Works with all clamp-style sealers, per maker.
  • Boil, microwave and freezer safe, per maker.

Key specifications

Model 200 Bags, Quart 8 x 12 in
Bags/rolls Precut bags
Sizes & count 200 quart bags, 8 x 12 in

Embossed/channel Textured/embossed back panel
Fits which sealers All clamp-style (edge) sealers
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Boil, microwave; sous vide in listing title
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who portion in quantity and want a precut bag whose thickness and sealer fit are spelled out.

Skip it if you mostly seal large cuts; a quart bag is too small for a whole brisket or pork shoulder.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Large count.
  • Clear thickness and material.
  • Broad edge-sealer fit.

Cons

  • One size per box.
  • Not for chamber or handheld sealers.

3. Wevac 11-inch x 150-foot Roll with Cutter Box – One Long Roll, Clean Cuts

Best bulk rollWevac Vacuum Sealer Bags for Food

Wevac sells its 11-inch roll in a 150-foot length inside a keeper box with a built-in cutter, so the roll stays clean and you can cut a straight edge without hunting for scissors. That is a lot of bag in one place, enough for a season of freezer cooking or a big run of roasted green chiles.

The roll has embossed channels on one side to help suction, and Wevac says it works with all suction vacuum heat sealers, naming FoodSaver, Seal-a-Meal, Weston and Cabela’s. The maker calls it heavy duty and puncture-resistant and describes it as BPA free, and lists freezer storage and sous vide among its uses.

The listing does not state a thickness in mils. An 11-inch width suits most countertop sealers; check that your machine’s sealing bar is at least 11 inches wide before you buy.

Why we like it

  • 150 feet of 11-inch roll in one box.
  • Keeper box with a built-in cutter.
  • Embossed channels for suction.
  • Names compatible sealer brands.

Key specifications

Model 1122019
Bags/rolls Roll with cutter box
Sizes & count 1 roll, 11 in x 150 ft
Thickness (as stated) Not stated
Embossed/channel Embossed channels
Fits which sealers Suction heat sealers: FoodSaver, Seal-a-Meal, Weston, Cabela’s
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Sous vide stated; boil and microwave not stated
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It suits heavy users who would rather buy one long roll than several short ones, and who like a dispenser that keeps the roll tidy.

Skip it if your sealer stores its own roll inside the machine; a 150-foot roll in a separate box will not fit there.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most bag length here.
  • Built-in cutter.
  • Broad sealer compatibility.

Cons

  • Thickness not stated.
  • Bulky box to store.

4. FoodSaver Vacuum Zipper Quart Bags, 70 Count – Reseal With a Handheld

Best for handheld sealersFoodSaver Vacuum Zipper Quart Bags

Handheld sealers do not heat-seal at all. They pull air out through a small valve on a zipper bag, so they need bags like these. FoodSaver’s quart zipper bags have its FreshValve, which the maker says works with its handheld sealer to remove air quickly, and a reinforced double zipper for a leakproof close.

The advantage is that you can open the bag, take what you need and reseal it. That suits foods you dip into all week: a block of queso Oaxaca, sliced deli meat, a bag of dried chiles you use a few at a time. FoodSaver says the bags can be washed and reused, are multilayer and BPA free (maker’s claim), and lists sous vide among their uses.

The listing does not state a thickness, and it does not mention freezer storage, so for long-term freezing of big cuts a heat-sealed bag from an edge sealer is the safer bet.

Why we like it

  • FreshValve for handheld sealers.
  • Reinforced double zipper.
  • Reusable after washing, per FoodSaver.
  • 70 bags in one pack.

Key specifications

Model 2231953
Bags/rolls Zipper bags with valve
Sizes & count 70 quart bags
Thickness (as stated) Not stated
Embossed/channel Air channels, per maker
Fits which sealers Handheld sealers (FoodSaver)
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Sous vide stated; boil and microwave not stated
Freezer use Not stated on listing

Why we recommend it

It is the bag to buy if you own a handheld sealer, or want resealable bags for foods you open often.

Skip it if you have a countertop edge sealer; heat-sealed bags are the better match and cost less per bag.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Open and reseal many times.
  • Reusable.
  • Made for handheld sealers.

Cons

  • Freezer use not stated on this listing.
  • Only works with valve-type sealers.

5. Avid Armor Chamber Vacuum Sealer Bags, 11 x 10-inch – Pouches for Chamber Machines

Best for chamber sealersAvid Armor Chamber Vacuum Sealer Bags – Heavy Duty

Chamber sealers remove air from the whole chamber, so their pouches do not need embossed channels, and they can seal liquids such as a pot of mole, pozole or a marinade without sucking them into the machine. Avid Armor’s chamber pouches come 250 to a pack at 11 x 10 inches.

Avid Armor is clear about the limits: the listing says in capital letters that these are not for FoodSaver household vacuum sealers, and are for chamber vacuum sealers and heat bag sealers only. Used in a chamber machine, the maker lists meat and fish, sous vide, marinating and freezing, and describes the pouches as BPA free.

The listing does not state a thickness. If you own a chamber sealer, these are the right kind of bag; if you own an edge sealer, they will not pull a vacuum.

Why we like it

  • Made for chamber sealers, which seal liquids.
  • 250 pouches per pack.
  • Compatibility stated clearly by the maker.

Key specifications

Model Vacuum Pouch, 11 x 10
Bags/rolls Precut chamber pouches
Sizes & count 250 pouches, 11 x 10 in
Thickness (as stated) Not stated
Embossed/channel No channels (chamber pouch)
Fits which sealers Chamber sealers and heat bag sealers only; not FoodSaver
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Sous vide stated; boil and microwave not stated
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It suits chamber-sealer owners who freeze soups, sauces and stews and want a big box of plain pouches.

Skip it if you own a FoodSaver or other edge sealer; Avid Armor says these will not work with it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Right bag for liquids in a chamber sealer.
  • Large count.
  • Clear fit warning.

Cons

  • Useless in an edge sealer.
  • Thickness not stated.

6. Bonsenkitchen Vacuum Sealer Rolls, 6-Pack – Rated for Sous Vide to 230°F

Best for sous videBonsenkitchen Vacuum Sealer Rolls bags

Bonsenkitchen’s six-roll pack gives you three 11-inch x 20-foot rolls and three 8-inch x 20-foot rolls, the same two widths as the FoodSaver multipack but with a wider compatibility claim: the maker says the rolls work with all major brands of vacuum sealer.

The rolls are 4 mil thick, per the maker, with one embossed side with air-removal channels and one smooth, clear side, which makes it easy to see and label the contents. Bonsenkitchen gives a specific heat figure for sous vide, water up to 230°F (110°C), and says the bags are also microwave, freezer, boil and dishwasher safe and can be washed and reused. It describes the PA and PE film as BPA free.

That 230°F figure covers any sous vide cook, including the long, low baths used for carnitas or barbacoa; our guide to the best sous vide covers the circulators.

Why we like it

  • Sous vide rating stated: up to 230°F.
  • 4-mil thickness, per maker.
  • Two widths, six rolls.
  • Works with all major sealer brands, per maker.

Key specifications

Model VB3211
Bags/rolls Rolls
Sizes & count 3 rolls 11 in x 20 ft, 3 rolls 8 in x 20 ft
Thickness (as stated) 4 mil
Embossed/channel One side embossed, one side smooth
Fits which sealers All major brands of edge sealer
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Boil, microwave; sous vide to 230°F
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It suits sous vide cooks and anyone with a non-FoodSaver edge sealer who wants rolls with a stated thickness and heat rating.

Skip it if you need a lot of length; six 20-foot rolls add up to less than one Wevac box.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clear heat and thickness specs.
  • Two widths.
  • Broad sealer fit.

Cons

  • Short 20-foot rolls.
  • Not for chamber or handheld sealers.

7. FoodSaver Heavy Duty Quart Vacuum Seal Bags, 88 Count – Thicker for Bones and Edges

Best heavy-dutyFoodSaver Heavy Duty Quart Vacuum Seal Bags

Bones, dried chile stems and the sharp edges of frozen food are what puncture vacuum bags. FoodSaver’s heavy-duty quart bags are, the maker says, 30 percent thicker than its regular precut bags and resistant to leaks, punctures and tears, which helps with bone-in pork for carnitas, chicken pieces or a bag of stiff dried guajillos.

This 88-count listing repeats the 30 percent figure and names sous vide use and BPA-free material. FoodSaver’s 44-count listing for the same bags adds that they suit the freezer, fridge and pantry, are microwave safe and fit all FoodSaver appliances except handheld sealers.

FoodSaver gives the thickness only as a percentage, not in mils, so you cannot compare it directly with the O2frepak or Bonsenkitchen figures. One bullet on the 88-count listing mentions gallon-sized bags, but its title and size field say quart, 8 x 11 inches, so check the size before you order.

Why we like it

  • 30% thicker than FoodSaver’s regular bags.
  • Puncture, tear and leak resistant, per maker.
  • Microwave and sous vide safe, per maker.

Key specifications

Model 2231954
Bags/rolls Precut bags
Sizes & count 88 quart bags, 8 x 11 in
Thickness (as stated) 30% thicker than regular FoodSaver bags; mil not stated
Embossed/channel Not described
Fits which sealers All FoodSaver appliances except handheld
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Microwave and sous vide; boil not stated
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It suits FoodSaver owners who freeze bone-in meat or other sharp-edged foods and want a tougher bag.

Skip it if you seal mostly soft foods; regular bags cost less per bag.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Thicker than standard FoodSaver bags.
  • Puncture resistant, per maker.
  • Clear FoodSaver fit.

Cons

  • One listing bullet says gallon; title says quart.
  • Thickness not given in mils.

8. Syntus Vacuum Sealer Bags, 150 Count – Pint, Quart and Gallon in One Box

Best size varietySyntus 150 Pcs Vacuum Sealer Bags for Food

Syntus packs three sizes in one box: 50 gallon bags (11 x 16 inches), 50 quart bags (8 x 12) and 50 pint bags (6 x 10). That covers most of a freezer’s needs at once, pints for a cup of salsa macha or a few chipotles, quarts for a dinner’s worth of beans, gallons for a pork shoulder.

The bags are 4 mil thick, per Syntus, with a single-side textured dot pattern for suction, and the maker says they resist bone punctures. Syntus states they work with all desktop vacuum sealers, and is clear that they have no air valve and do not work with handheld sealers. The maker lists the microwave, fridge, freezer, boiling and sous vide among their uses and describes them as BPA free.

Fifty of each size may run out unevenly; if you mostly portion dinners, the quarts will go first.

Why we like it

  • Three sizes, 50 of each.
  • 4-mil thickness, per maker.
  • Boil, microwave, freezer and sous vide uses stated.

Key specifications

Model VSB150
Bags/rolls Precut bags
Sizes & count 50 each: 11 x 16, 8 x 12, 6 x 10 in
Thickness (as stated) 4 mil
Embossed/channel Single-side textured dot pattern
Fits which sealers All desktop sealers; not handheld
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Boil, microwave and sous vide
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It suits a new sealer owner who does not yet know which size they will use most.

Skip it if you already know you only need quarts; a single-size box gives you more of what you use.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Three useful sizes.
  • Stated thickness.
  • Clear handheld warning.

Cons

  • Sizes run out unevenly.
  • Not for chamber or handheld sealers.

9. Weston Quart Vacuum Sealer Bags, 100 Count – Two-Ply Nylon and Mesh

Best for Weston sealersWeston 8" x 12" Quart Vacuum Sealer Bags For Meal Prep & Sous Vide

Weston makes sealers as well as bags, and these 8 x 12-inch quart bags are built for its own machines and for other external-clamp sealers; the maker says they are compatible with FoodSaver heat-seal systems too. The box holds 100 precut bags.

Weston describes them as two-ply nylon with a layer of polyethylene mesh, FDA food-safe material and BPA free (maker’s claim). It says they are freezer and microwave safe and can be boiled in water for thawing. The listing is inconsistent on thickness: one line says 3 mil, the title says “3mm” and another bullet says 30 mil. We read it as 3 mil, the figure in Weston’s material description, but treat it as unconfirmed.

If you own a Weston sealer, these are the maker-matched bags; for other edge sealers they are one good option among several.

Why we like it

  • Matched to Weston sealers, also FoodSaver compatible.
  • Two-ply nylon with mesh layer.
  • Freezer and microwave safe; boil to thaw.

Key specifications

Model 30-0101-W
Bags/rolls Precut bags
Sizes & count 100 quart bags, 8 x 12 in
Thickness (as stated) 3 mil in material description (listing also says 3mm and 30 mil)
Embossed/channel Polyethylene mesh layer
Fits which sealers Weston and external-clamp sealers; FoodSaver heat-seal systems
Boil/microwave/sous vide (maker) Microwave; boil to thaw; sous vide in title
Freezer use Yes

Why we recommend it

It suits Weston owners and anyone who wants bags from a sealer maker in a 100-count box.

Skip it if a clearly stated thickness matters to you; the listing contradicts itself.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • From a sealer maker.
  • Broad clamp-sealer fit.
  • Boil-to-thaw stated.

Cons

  • Conflicting thickness figures.
  • One size per box.

Vacuum-sealed food still belongs in the fridge or freezer

Vacuum sealing slows freezer burn and spoilage, but it does not preserve food on its own. University extension food scientists are clear on this. UConn Extension says perishable foods in a vacuum package “must be refrigerated between 34 and 38°F or frozen at 0° F” and “cannot be safely stored at room temperature,” and that vacuum sealers “are NOT a substitute for heat processing of home canned foods.”

The reason is botulism. Removing air creates an oxygen-free package, and Kansas State University Research and Extension’s food scientist Karen Blakeslee warns that this “can allow Clostridium botulinum to form spores that can develop a deadly toxin if proper storage conditions are not met.” UConn adds that such bacteria can grow without any sign: “The food can look, smell and taste perfectly fine.”

For a kitchen that freezes carnitas, beans and mole, the practical rules from UConn are simple: keep vacuum-packed perishables cold, and when you take a bag out of the freezer, open it so some air gets in and thaw it in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Dry foods such as rice and crackers can be stored vacuum-packed at room temperature, UConn says. For reheating, see our guide on how to reheat Mexican leftovers.

Dried chiles keep longer with less air around them.

How to choose vacuum seal bags

The right bag starts with your machine, then the food you freeze and how much of it.

Match the bag to your sealer

Edge (clamp) sealers, including most FoodSaver, Nesco and Weston countertop models, need bags with one embossed or textured side; smooth bags will not pull a vacuum. Chamber sealers use smooth pouches. Handheld sealers need zipper bags with a valve. Every listing above says which it fits; read that line first.

Rolls or precut bags

Rolls let you cut a bag to fit, which wastes less on long or odd-shaped food and suits sealers with a built-in roll holder. Precut bags are faster when you are portioning a big batch into identical bags. Many kitchens keep both: a roll for big cuts, quart bags for everyday portions.

Width and your sealing bar

An 11-inch roll needs a sealing bar at least 11 inches wide. Check your sealer’s maximum bag width before buying 11-inch rolls or gallon bags.

Thickness

Thicker bags resist punctures from bones, stems and frozen edges. Some makers state thickness in mils (O2frepak, Bonsenkitchen and Syntus say 3.5 to 4 mil), others only in relative terms. For bone-in meat or dried chiles, choose a heavier bag, or fold a paper towel over sharp points.

Heat: boiling, microwave and sous vide

If you cook sous vide or reheat in the bag, check what the maker states. Bonsenkitchen gives a sous vide limit of 230°F; others simply list sous vide or boiling as a use. Follow each maker’s directions; Avid Armor, for example, tells you to cut a small opening in its edge-sealer bags before microwaving.

Bag safety claims

Nearly every listing calls its bags BPA free; that is the maker’s claim, not an independent test. Weston also describes its material as FDA food safe.

How we picked these nine

We started with the brands sealer owners buy most often, including FoodSaver, Wevac, O2frepak, Bonsenkitchen, Syntus, Avid Armor, Nesco and Weston, and checked each through the Amazon product data for stock and for the maker’s sizes, counts, thickness, sealer compatibility and heat claims. We chose a mix of rolls, precut bags, zipper bags and chamber pouches so every type of sealer is covered. Food-safety guidance comes from UConn Extension and Kansas State University Research and Extension. We left out unbranded sellers and out-of-stock or short-supply listings.

We have not used these bags ourselves. Where a maker does not state a thickness or a heat rating, the specifications say so.

Vacuum seal bag questions, answered

Do all vacuum sealer bags work with FoodSaver?

No. FoodSaver countertop sealers need embossed or textured bags; most third-party edge-sealer bags, such as Wevac, O2frepak and Weston, say they fit FoodSaver machines. Chamber pouches like Avid Armor’s do not, and FoodSaver’s zipper bags are for its handheld sealer.

Can you reuse vacuum seal bags?

Some makers say so. Bonsenkitchen says its rolls can be washed and reused, and FoodSaver says its zipper bags are reusable. A heat-sealed bag gets shorter each time you cut it open and reseal it, and bags that held raw meat need careful washing.

How do I vacuum seal mole, beans or soup?

Liquids get pulled toward an edge sealer’s pump. A common approach is to freeze the mole or beans flat in the bag first, or in a container, then seal the frozen block. A chamber sealer can seal liquids directly. Our guide to the best vacuum sealer covers wet modes and chamber machines, and what mole is explains why it is worth making a big batch.

Vacuum seal bags or reusable silicone freezer bags?

Vacuum-sealed bags remove more air, which helps against freezer burn on long storage. Reusable silicone and PEVA bags cost nothing per use and are easier for food you will eat within weeks. Our guide to the best reusable freezer bags covers that side.

Can vacuum-sealed meat be kept in the pantry?

No. Extension food scientists say vacuum-packed perishables must still be refrigerated or frozen; vacuum sealing is not canning.

The bags we’d keep beside the sealer

For a FoodSaver, buy the FoodSaver Custom Length rolls and add the O2frepak quart bags for quick portioning. If you seal in volume, the Wevac 150-foot roll keeps you supplied; a handheld sealer needs the FoodSaver zipper bags, and a chamber sealer needs pouches such as Avid Armor’s.
