Raspados at Home: The Best Shaved Ice Machine for Home

Block ice or cubes? How to pick the best shaved ice machine for home raspados and snow cones, from a hand crank to a party cart.

Syrup poured over a tall mound of finely shaved ice.

Raspados are one of the great simple pleasures of a hot day: finely shaved ice, a bright fruit syrup and, if you like, a spoonful of chamoy or a pinch of chile. In Mexico, and in parts of Texas and the Southwest, this is called a raspa or raspado. The rest of the country knows its cousin as the snow cone. Everything depends on the ice, and that is where a good machine earns its place.

Shaved ice machines look alike and use the same words, so it is hard to tell them apart. The differences that count are the ice each one takes, whether you can change the texture and how many cups you need at once. This guide sets out eight machines from named makers, from a hand crank to a rolling party cart, and it says plainly where the specifications run out.

Quick verdict: which shaved ice machine to buy

The best shaved ice machine for home use is the Hawaiian Shaved Ice S900A: its blades adjust, it takes molded blocks or plain cubes, and it stores in a cabinet. If you want cubes in and snow out with a three-year warranty, choose the Cuisinart SCM-10P1. For a crowd, the Nostalgia Retro Snow Cone Cart holds snow for about 72 cones.

A word on the evidence: the one independent review we could read in full was Popular Science’s 2023 snow cone machine roundup, which covers two of our picks. Most other coverage is affiliate lists, so the rest of these choices rest on what the makers state and what suits each kind of cook.

Our picks for the best shaved ice machine for home

1. Hawaiian Shaved Ice S900A Machine – Adjustable Blades for Home Raspados

Best overallHawaiian Shaved Ice Machine S900A

The S900A comes from a brand whose whole range on Amazon is shaved ice machines, syrups and supplies, and it is the one on this page we would start with. It is a small 120-volt countertop machine in a three-piece design: you add ice, press the grinder down and the shaved ice piles up underneath.

What sets it apart for raspados is the choice of texture. The stainless steel blades adjust, and the maker gives you two routes. Freeze water in the two round molds in the box for fluffy ice that takes syrup well, or use regular cubes or bagged ice for a crunchier, slushier cup. Hawaiian Shaved Ice describes the S900A as making powdery snow, and it uses a rougher word, crunchable, for its smaller S700.

At 6.5 by 8 by 14 inches it stores in a cabinet, and a non-slip mat comes in the box to keep it steady while you press. Wattage and how much ice it holds are not on the listing. This listing is the machine only, so buy syrup separately or look at the maker’s kit versions.

Why we like it

  • Adjustable stainless steel blades let you set the texture
  • Takes bagged ice, cubes or blocks from the two included molds
  • Small enough, at 6.5 x 8 x 14 inches, to store in a cabinet
  • Includes a non-slip mat and a one-year warranty

Key specifications

Model S900A
Capacity Not stated
Power 120V electric; watts not stated
Ice it takes Bagged ice, cubes or molded round blocks
Texture control Adjustable stainless steel blades
Size 6.5 x 8 x 14 in
Cleaning Three-piece design; listing says cleanup is quick
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

This suits a home cook who wants a raspado-style texture a few cups at a time, and who will take the small extra step of freezing blocks when it matters.

Skip it if you want to serve a party without stopping, because you press the ice through by hand and the listing gives no capacity.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Texture is adjustable
  • Two ways to feed it, blocks or cubes
  • Stores neatly when summer ends

Cons

  • No syrups, cups or spoons on this listing
  • Watts and capacity are not stated
  • Regular cubes give a crunchier cup, the listing says

2. Cuisinart SCM-10P1 Snow Cone Machine – Cube Ice With Safety Interlocks

Best for regular ice cubesCuisinart Snow Cone Machine

Cuisinart’s machine is the simple choice if you never want to freeze a block. Regular ice cubes go in, the electric motor drives a stainless steel blade, and shaved ice collects in a 4-quart bin. Cuisinart rates it at four to five cones’ worth in under a minute.

It also has the longest warranty on this page, three years limited, and the most developed safety design. The blade mechanism and the pull-out serving tray each carry an interlock, and the unit runs only when the snow bin is seated and the ice press is closed. That matters in a house with children around.

The box covers serving as well: four BPA-free reusable plastic cones, twelve paper cones and two fold-down cone holders on the machine. The snow bin lifts out for washing. The listing does not mention any way to change the texture, so what you get from the blade is what you get. Because it is built around cubes, expect something closer to a snow cone than to the softest block-shaved ice.

Why we like it

  • Three-year limited warranty, the longest here
  • Interlocks on the blade mechanism and serving tray
  • Rated for four to five cones’ worth in under a minute
  • Reusable cones, paper cones and fold-down holders included

Key specifications

Model SCM-10P1
Capacity 4 quarts
Power Electric; watts not stated
Ice it takes Regular ice cubes
Texture control Not stated
Size Not stated
Cleaning Snow bin lifts out for washing
Warranty 3-year limited

Why we recommend it

Pick this for a family that wants snow cones at the flip of a switch, with cubes from the freezer and a warranty that outlasts a few summers.

Skip it if fine, block-shaved texture is the point for you, since no blade adjustment is listed.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No molds or block ice needed
  • Interlocks stop the motor unless it is closed up
  • Removable bin for washing

Cons

  • No stated texture control
  • Machine size and watts not on the listing
  • Cubes generally give a coarser result than blocks

3. Snowie Little Snowie Max – Fast Shaving From Freezer Cubes

Fastest from cubesSNOWIE Little Snowie Max Snow Cone Machine (6-Stick Kit

Snowie says it has supplied the shaved ice trade for over 35 years, and the Little Snowie Max is its compact home machine. It takes ice cubes straight from the freezer, holds about 64 ounces of ice and, by the maker’s figure, fills an 8-ounce cup in about five seconds. That is a quick pace for a machine small enough to keep on the counter.

Snowie calls the result finely shaved ice, and it lists Korean bingsu among the uses, a dessert that depends on soft, fine ice. Several buyer guides praise the texture too, though most of those are affiliate lists, so we treat that as a good sign and not as proof.

This six-stick kit includes six powder sticks, two mixing bottles, eight serving shovels and two pour spouts. You mix the powder into syrup yourself. The listing does not give ingredients or allergens for the sticks, so read the pack if that matters in your house. For raspados, you may prefer to make a simple fruit syrup and leave the sticks for the kids.

Why we like it

  • Takes ice cubes straight from the freezer
  • Maker says it fills an 8-ounce cup in about 5 seconds
  • Holds about 64 ounces of ice
  • Kit includes powder sticks, bottles, shovels and pour spouts

Key specifications

Model Little Snowie 2 (Max)
Capacity About 64 oz of ice
Power Electric; listing says commercial-grade motor, watts not stated
Ice it takes Ice cubes
Texture control Not stated
Size Not stated; described as compact
Cleaning Not stated
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

Choose this if you want quick cups from ordinary cubes and a brand that lives on shaved ice rather than selling it as a sideline.

Skip it if you need to know exactly what is in your syrup before you buy, because the listing leaves out the ingredients of the powder sticks.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Works from ordinary freezer cubes
  • Quick by the maker’s own figures
  • Comes ready to serve with syrup bottles and shovels

Cons

  • Powder stick ingredients are not on the listing
  • No stated texture adjustment
  • Size and cleaning details are missing

4. Hawaiian Shaved Ice S700 Snow Cone Kit – Machine, Syrups and Cups Together

Best starter kitHawaiian Shaved Ice S700 Kid-Friendly Snow Cone Machine Kit with 3-16oz. Syrup Flavors: Cherry

If you want everything to arrive in one box, this is the kit. It pairs the maker’s kid-friendly S700 machine with three 16-ounce bottles of syrup in cherry, grape and blue raspberry, plus 25 cups, 25 spoon straws and three bottle pourers. The maker works out that with a 2-ounce pour the kit makes 24 six-ounce cones.

This pick has an independent review behind it. Popular Science named this kit best overall in its 2023 snow cone machine roundup, and the magazine says it tried the machines itself. It praised the included syrups, the countertop size and the ease of use, and it warned that the machine is not well suited to large batches.

The machine takes homemade or bagged cubes and runs on standard 120-volt power. The listing says the shelf-stable syrups use high fructose corn syrup, are nut-free and that none of the flavors contain soy, wheat, dairy, starch, flour or egg. Check the bottles yourself if you are cooking for an allergy. This model does not list blade adjustment, and the maker calls its ice crunchable, so it sits closer to a snow cone than a soft raspado.

Why we like it

  • Named best overall by Popular Science in 2023
  • Three syrups, cups, spoon straws and pourers in the box
  • Kit makes 24 six-ounce cones at a 2-ounce pour, the maker says
  • Maker states the syrups are nut-free

Why we recommend it

This fits a family that wants a first shaved ice night with no shopping list and is happy with snow cone texture.

Skip it if you plan big batches, which is the exact weakness Popular Science flagged.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Ready to use out of the box
  • Independent review behind it
  • Syrup allergen details on the listing

Cons

  • Not for large batches, per Popular Science
  • No listed texture control
  • Classic snow cone flavors, not fruit syrups for raspados

5. Nostalgia Retro Snow Cone Cart – Rolling Party Cart for 72 Cones

Best for partiesNostalgia Snow Cone Shaved Ice Machine - Retro Cart Slushie Machine Makes 72 Icy Treats - Includes Metal Scoop

This is the machine for the backyard, the block party or the quinceañera. Nostalgia’s cart stands 54 inches tall on 13-inch spoked wheels with rubber tires and a pull handle, and it holds enough snow for about 72 eight-ounce cones. The stainless steel blades shave 2 pounds of ice in 90 seconds, according to the listing, and you fill the shaving cage with regular ice cubes.

Popular Science gave it a best old-school label in 2023 and said it functions as well as it looks, with its weight as the main complaint. The listing gives no weight, so plan on two people for steps.

The serving details are well thought through. A paper cone dispenser sits on the side, a shelf holds two cones while you pour syrup, tempered glass windows show the snow piling up, a drip tray catches melt and the base has a storage compartment. It comes with a metal scoop, two syrup bottles and 100 paper cups and spoons. The top also separates from the cart, so it can sit on a counter or a side table on smaller days.

Why we like it

  • Holds snow for about 72 eight-ounce cones
  • Shaves 2 pounds of ice in 90 seconds, the listing says
  • Wheels, pull handle and storage in the base
  • Top lifts off for countertop use

Key specifications

Model SCC200
Capacity About 72 eight-ounce cones
Power Electric; watts not stated
Ice it takes Regular ice cubes
Texture control Not stated

Cleaning Drip tray catches melted ice
Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

Buy it if you host often and want the machine to double as part of the party, with a place to put the cups, the scoop and the syrup.

Skip it if you lack storage, because a 54-inch cart is a lot of machine for one week of summer.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Biggest stated snow capacity here
  • Everything for serving is built in
  • Named in an independent review

Cons

  • Heavy, per Popular Science, and weight is not listed
  • Takes real storage space
  • No stated texture control

6. Great Northern Snow Cub Ice Shaver – Block Ice at Concession Pace

Best for block iceGreat Northern Popcorn Snow Cub 360lbs/hour 250W Shaved Ice Machine

Great Northern Popcorn is best known for concession gear, and the Snow Cub is the closest thing here to stand equipment. A 250-watt, 1/3-horsepower motor runs at 1,420 RPM and the maker rates it at up to 360 pounds of ice an hour, or about 6 pounds a minute. No home needs that much. What you are really buying is a machine that handles blocks of ice.

The adjustable stainless steel blades go from fluffy to coarse, so you can set it soft for a raspado or rougher for a snow cone that melts slowly. A safety shield limits access to the blades and stops chips flying out, and a limit switch adds a second safeguard.

This is a floor-standing machine at 11.8 by 15.7 by 35.4 inches and 34 pounds, and it runs on a normal 120-volt supply. Freezing blocks at home takes some planning, and cleaning steps are not on the listing. The Great Northern machine in the Popular Science roundup is a different listing, now in short supply, so we do not carry that verdict over to this model.

Why we like it

  • Stated power and output: 250W, up to 360 lb an hour
  • Adjustable blades from fluffy to coarse
  • Safety shield and limit switch
  • Stainless steel and plastic build, 34 pounds

Key specifications

Model 6062 Snow Cub
Capacity Up to 360 lb of ice an hour
Power 250W, 1/3 HP, 120V
Ice it takes Blocks of ice
Texture control Adjustable stainless steel blades
Size 11.8 x 15.7 x 35.4 in
Cleaning Not stated
Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

This is for the serious raspado fan, the church festival or the home cook who runs a stand for the neighborhood and wants block-shaved ice in quantity.

Skip it if you only want a cup or two after dinner, because it is far more machine than that job needs.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • The most complete specifications on this page
  • Real texture range
  • Built for steady volume

Cons

  • Large and heavy for a home kitchen
  • Works around blocks, so it takes planning
  • Cleaning details are not on the listing

7. Dash Deluxe Shaved Ice and Slushy Maker – Small Footprint, Adjustable Texture

Best for small kitchensDash Deluxe Shaved Ice & Slushy Maker

Dash aims its small appliances at tight kitchens, and this one suits an apartment. Its adjustable blades run from coarse to fine, and it comes with a 32-ounce serving pitcher. That pitcher makes sense if you want slushies, frosé or a round of mocktails as well as cups of ice.

Suction feet keep the base steady on a counter, and a recipe guide comes in the box. The listing is short on hard numbers. It gives no watts, no size and no warranty, and it does not say which kinds of ice work best, though the smaller Dash model on Amazon lists a one-year warranty and a design that comes apart for cleaning.

For a home cook who wants to try raspados without giving up a shelf, that is a fair trade. Make a syrup from your own fruit and the machine only has to supply the ice.

Why we like it

  • Adjustable blades, coarse to fine
  • 32-ounce serving pitcher included
  • Suction feet for a stable base
  • Space-saving design with a recipe guide

Key specifications

Model DSIM200GBAQ04
Capacity 32 oz pitcher
Power Electric; watts not stated
Ice it takes Not stated
Texture control Adjustable blades, coarse to fine
Size Not stated; described as compact
Cleaning Not stated
Warranty Not stated on this listing

Why we recommend it

Choose it if counter space is your limit and you want some control over texture in a compact machine.

Skip it if you want published specifications, because this listing has fewer of them than any other electric pick here.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Texture adjustment in a small machine
  • Pitcher suits drinks as well as cups
  • Suction feet

Cons

  • No stated watts, size or warranty
  • Ice type not stated
  • Pitcher adds one more thing to wash

8. VKP Snowflake Hand Crank Snow Cone Maker – Shaved Ice With No Outlet

Best manual machineVKP Brands Snowflake Hand Crank Snow Cone Maker

Street vendors in Mexico often shave raspados by hand, so a crank machine feels right for this page. VKP’s Snowflake comes from Victorio Kitchen Products. A long handle turns the blade, a built-in spring holds the ice block tight against it, and the wide base catches drips.

The stainless steel blade adjusts, and the maker says it is set at the right angle for light, fluffy ice. Three ice mold cups with lids stack in the freezer, and you will get the best results from those, although regular cubes also work.

With no cord, it goes wherever you do: a picnic, a campsite or a tailgate. Bear in mind that it makes one cup at a time and that your arm is the motor, so it is better for a family of four than for a party. The one-year warranty matches most of the electric machines here.

Why we like it

  • No electricity needed
  • Adjustable stainless steel blade
  • Spring holds the ice block against the blade
  • Three stacking ice molds with lids

Key specifications

Model VKP1101
Capacity Not stated
Power Hand crank
Ice it takes Molded blocks work best; cubes also work
Texture control Adjustable stainless steel blade
Size Not stated; listed as small
Cleaning Wide base catches drips

Why we recommend it

Pick this for camping, for quiet kitchens and for anyone who likes the idea of making raspados the slow way.

Skip it if you are serving more than a few people at a time, since every cup is cranked by hand.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Works anywhere
  • Adjustable blade with no motor
  • No motor noise

Cons

  • Slow for groups
  • Needs frozen molds for best results
  • Capacity and size are not stated

How to choose a shaved ice machine for raspados

A black and white photo of a man pushing a vending cart with an umbrella on a beach
A vendor with a cart and umbrella on a beach.

Start with the ice it takes. This decides almost everything. Machines that shave a solid block generally give softer, finer ice. Machines that run on cubes are more convenient, and you pay for that with a coarser cup. The S900A and the VKP handle both, and their makers point to molds for the best result. The Cuisinart, the Little Snowie and the Nostalgia cart run on cubes. The Great Northern is built around blocks.

Look for a way to change the texture. A raspado wants ice fine enough to hold syrup without puddling at the bottom of the cup. A snow cone can be crunchier. Adjustable blades give you both, and only four machines here list them: the S900A, the Great Northern, the Dash Deluxe and the VKP. If the listing says nothing, assume you get one texture.

Count your cups honestly. Most homes need a few cups at a time, and a small countertop machine does that well. Stated output figures such as pounds per hour tell you more about the motor than about your Saturday. If you serve a crowd, look at how much finished snow the machine can hold, as the Nostalgia cart does, so that the line keeps moving while you pour.

Check the safety features. These machines have sharp blades and fast motors, and they often end up near children. The Cuisinart has interlocks and the Great Northern has a shield and a limit switch. Unplug any machine before you reach near the blade, and keep an adult in charge of it.

Plan your syrups. A kit is an easy start, but the best raspados use real fruit. Cook fruit with sugar and a little lime, strain it and chill it, and you have something no bottle offers. Our guide to aguas frescas covers the same kind of fruit flavors, and our best chamoy sauce and Tajín flavor guides cover the finishing touches.

Think about where it lives. A machine you have to dig out of the garage is a machine you will not use. The S900A fits in a cabinet and the Dash sits on a counter. The cart needs a corner of its own all year, and a lot of homes do not have one.

How we picked these eight machines

We have not used these products ourselves. We read the in-stock shaved ice and snow cone machines from named makers on Amazon, then compared the listings for ice type, blade adjustment, capacity, safety features and warranty. We read Popular Science’s 2023 roundup, which says its machines were tried by the magazine. We also searched for test kitchen reviews and found mainly affiliate lists, which we did not treat as evidence.

Because these machines touch food and use exposed blades, we left out the many thin Amazon sellers that fill the results, even though some look capable. We also left out VEVOR’s commercial ice crushers, which suit a business more than a home, and the KitchenAid shave ice attachment, since it is an add-on for a stand mixer and not a machine. Eight is the honest count, and each pick does something the others do not.

We searched the CPSC recall database by brand and found no recall of a shaved ice or snow cone machine from any maker here. Cuisinart’s parent Conair has recalled other products, including grill brushes, gas grills and some food processors and blender combos, none of them the machine on this page.

Shaved ice machine questions, answered

Is a snow cone machine the same as a shaved ice machine?

The two names overlap, and makers use them almost interchangeably. Snow cones are a kind of shaved ice flavored after it is made. In practice, people expect a snow cone to be coarser and a Hawaiian-style shaved ice or a raspado to be finer. Go by the ice type and the blade adjustment, not the name on the box.

What do you need for raspados at home?

You need a machine, clean ice and a good syrup. Classic flavors include fruit, leche and picosito, and chamoy is a popular choice. Sweetened condensed milk, fresh fruit or a sprinkle of chile powder all work on top. Our guide to Mexican desserts gives more ideas for the table.

Can a shaved ice machine use regular ice cubes?

Many can, and the Cuisinart, Little Snowie and Nostalgia cart are designed for them. Cubes give a crunchier result on some machines, as the S900A listing says. Our guide to the best ice cube trays can help you freeze more at home, and a countertop ice maker keeps a party supplied.

Can you make frozen margaritas with one?

Several listings suggest it, including the S900A, and the Dash mentions cocktails. For a frozen margarita on a regular basis, a dedicated machine is the better tool, as our guide to the best margarita machine for home explains. Serve drinks made with alcohol only to adults.

How do you clean a shaved ice machine?

Unplug it first. Follow the maker’s instructions, wash the parts that come out, keep your fingers clear of the blade and let everything dry before you store it. Sugary syrup left on a machine turns sticky, so pour syrup into the cup away from the machine. Not every listing gives full cleaning steps, and we mark those above as not stated.

Are these machines safe for kids to use?

Treat them as a job for an adult, with children doing the pouring. Some machines are sold as kid-friendly and some have interlocks that stop the motor when they are open, but the blade is still sharp. A hand crank is slower, though its blade needs the same care.

Our final pick for raspados at home

Green shaved ice in a footed glass on a tray with a spoon beside it
Green shaved ice served in a glass.

Buy the Hawaiian Shaved Ice S900A if you want a small machine with adjustable blades and a choice of texture, and the Cuisinart if you want cubes and a three-year warranty. Choose the Little Snowie for quick cups, the S700 kit for an easy first night and the Nostalgia cart for a crowd. The Great Northern is for block ice in quantity, the Dash for small kitchens and the VKP for anywhere without an outlet.

If shaved ice has you thinking about other frozen treats, our best ice cream maker guide covers the machines for ice cream and sorbet at home. Whichever you pick, fresh fruit syrup will do more for the cup than any machine feature.
