Wall or Under-Cabinet? The Best 36 Inch Range Hood by Airflow

Seven 36-inch hoods from 350 to 900 stated CFM, wall and under-cabinet, with noise, filters and when the airflow means you need make-up air.

A stainless steel range hood over a pro-style range in a white kitchen with a hexagon tile wall
A stainless hood over a pro-style range.

A 36-inch range changes the hood question. Wider ranges usually mean more burners and often more heat, and a 30-inch hood that managed the old stove won’t reach the outer burners. When we are charring chiles or searing skirt steak, the smoke goes where the burner is, and the hood has to be there too.

So this guide starts from the width and sorts by airflow. It covers seven 36-inch hoods, three for an open wall and four for under a cabinet, from a quiet 350 CFM up to a stated 900. Every width and CFM figure comes from the listing, and we flag the one number that changes how hard the installation gets.

Quick verdict: which 36-inch hood to buy

For most kitchens, the best 36 inch range hood is the ZLINE KB4SNX-36: a wall-mount hood with a stated 400 CFM at top speed, four fan speeds and dishwasher-safe baffle filters, and at that figure it stays at the line where codes start asking for make-up air. For under a cabinet, get the Broan-NuTone GLA1363SS, at 350 CFM and a stated 1.5 sones. For a big gas range with the ducting to match, the Proline PLJW 129.36 states 900 CFM.

If you are comparing mount styles at other widths, see our guides to the best wall mount range hood and the best under cabinet range hood. Those lean toward 30-inch ranges, while everything on this page is a 36.

Our picks for the best 36 inch range hood

Listed in the order we would look at them. Each hood is sold as a 36-inch model and states its CFM, and each pick was in stock when we checked.

1. ZLINE 36-Inch Satin Stainless Wall Mount Range Hood – Enough Air Without Extra Work

Best overallZLINE 36 in. Convertible Satin Stainless Steel Wall Mount Range Hood with Stainless Steel Handle (KB4SNX-36)

The ZLINE KB4SNX-36 is the chimney-style hood we’d look at first for a 36-inch range on an open wall. Its four speeds run 120, 240, 320 and 400 CFM, and that top number is the reason it leads. Codes usually start asking about make-up air above 400, so this hood gives real airflow while staying at the line. Check your local rules, though, because some cities set the threshold differently.

The baffle filters are stainless and dishwasher safe, which is what you want if you fry often. The listing says it can be ducted out or recirculated with CF1 charcoal filters, sold separately, and it includes a transition piece for 6-inch round duct. The body is ZLINE’s satin stainless steel, which it describes as a rust-, scratch- and fingerprint-resistant finish, with push-button controls, two LED lights and a stainless handle that is decorative only.

Two limits to know about. This listing does not state the electrical requirements; ZLINE’s plainer KB-36 calls for a dedicated 120V, 15-amp circuit, so check the manual and plan an outlet behind the chimney. And 400 CFM won’t be enough for a high-output gas range running every burner on high. For that, look further down this list and plan the ducting.

Why we like it

  • Four fan speeds up to 400 CFM
  • Dishwasher-safe stainless baffle filters
  • Ducted or recirculating with optional filters
  • Fingerprint-resistant satin stainless, per ZLINE

Key specifications

Model KB4SNX-36

Stated width 36 in
CFM (as stated) 120/240/320/400
Fan speeds 4
Filters Stainless baffle
Noise (as stated) Not stated
Warranty (per listing) Not stated on this listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a 36-inch electric, induction or moderate gas range, in a home where the cook wants solid airflow without getting into make-up air.

Skip it if you run a high-output pro-style gas range hard, because 400 CFM is on the low side for that much heat.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stays at the 400 CFM line
  • Easy baffle cleaning
  • Clear airflow figures at each speed

Cons

  • Electrical requirements not stated on the listing
  • Noise not stated
  • Charcoal filters cost extra if you recirculate

2. Broan-NuTone 36-Inch Under Cabinet Range Hood – Quiet at Working Speed

Best under-cabinet swapBroan-NuTone 36-Inch Stainless Steel Under Cabinet Range Hood- Trusted Quiet Power with 350 CFM

The GLA1363SS is the straightforward choice when a 36-inch cabinet already sits above the range. The listing gives 350 max blower CFM and 1.5 sones at working speed, which Broan-NuTone compares to a refrigerator running. A low number like that matters more than most people expect, since a loud hood is a hood nobody turns on.

It installs with EZ1 brackets that Broan-NuTone says let one person do the job, and it converts between top venting, rear venting and non-ducted use with charcoal filters, sold separately. That flexibility helps when you are stuck with existing ductwork. The fan has two speeds and the filters are dishwasher safe.

This is an everyday hood, not a smoke-clearing one. If you sear often over gas, 350 CFM will struggle. It uses micro filters rather than baffles, and the 1-year warranty is short compared with others on this list. The listing also says it is Energy Star certified and Title 24 compliant with electric ranges only, which is worth noting if you are in California.

Why we like it

  • 1.5 sones on working speed, per the listing
  • One-person EZ1 bracket install
  • Vents top, rear or non-ducted
  • Energy Star certified, per the listing

Key specifications

Fan speeds 2
Filters Dishwasher-safe micro filters
Noise (as stated) 1.5 sones at working speed
Warranty (per listing) 1 year; 3-year LED module

Why we recommend it

It suits a straight swap under existing cabinets, especially on an electric or induction range where the air is mostly steam and everyday cooking.

Skip it if you want baffle filters or much more airflow for heavy gas cooking.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very low stated noise at working speed
  • Flexible venting
  • Easy to install

Cons

  • Modest airflow for gas
  • Only two fan speeds
  • Short 1-year warranty

3. COSMO Haven 36-Inch 500 CFM Under Cabinet Range Hood – Plug-In Install, Twin Motors

Best plug-in36 in. Haven Coll 500 CFM Ducted Under Cabinet Range Hood

The COS-QB90 is a step up in airflow from the Broan, with a stated 500 CFM from twin centrifugal motors and three fan speeds. It is ducted as standard, with a carbon filter kit sold separately for ductless use. It uses a 3-prong plug at 120V, which makes the electrical side simple if there is an outlet nearby.

The ARC-FLOW filters are permanent and dishwasher safe, so there’s nothing to replace. At 35.75 inches wide, it fits a 36-inch opening, and 22 inches of depth gives it a fair reach over the front burners. COSMO gives 40 dB on the lowest speed with rigid ducting under optimal conditions, which isn’t the same as what you will hear on high.

Watch the duct size. The listing gives a 7.9-inch round top vent, which is not the 6-inch round found on many hoods here, so an existing duct may need an adapter or replacement. At 500 CFM, it is also above the 400 CFM threshold, so ask about make-up air before buying.

Why we like it

  • Stated 500 CFM from twin motors
  • Permanent dishwasher-safe filters
  • 3-prong plug at 120V
  • 35.75 x 22 x 10 inches, per the listing

Key specifications

CFM (as stated) 500
Fan speeds 3
Filters Permanent ARC-FLOW, dishwasher safe
Noise (as stated) 40 dB on lowest speed
Warranty (per listing) 2-year limited parts

Why we recommend it

It suits a kitchen with under-cabinet space and an outlet handy, where the cook wants more air than a basic hood gives.

Skip it if your existing duct is smaller than 7.9 inches and you would rather not change it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong stated airflow
  • Simple plug-in electrics
  • No filters to replace

Cons

  • Larger duct than most
  • Above the 400 CFM make-up air line
  • 2-year warranty on parts

4. Proline 36-Inch 900 CFM Wall Range Hood – Serious Air for Big Burners

Best for high heatPROLINE 36-Inch Professional Wall Range Hood

This is the hood for the cook who actually uses a big gas range at full tilt. Proline’s PLJW 129.36 states 900 CFM from a single blower, with four speeds and a 6-inch round duct. If you char chiles right on the burner or sear over high heat most nights, that is the sort of capacity that helps.

The listing gives 5 sones at top speed. That isn’t silent, and Proline doesn’t state the lower speeds, though you won’t always need the top one. The filters pop out and go in the dishwasher, and the controls and LED lights are simple. Warranty is 3 years, per the listing.

It’s the installation that needs thought. At 900 CFM you are well over the 400 CFM make-up air threshold, and pulling that much air through a 6-inch duct depends heavily on the run. Talk to an HVAC contractor before you buy this one, particularly in a tight, well-sealed house. It is ducted only in this listing.

Why we like it

  • Stated 900 CFM from one blower
  • Four fan speeds
  • Dishwasher-safe filters
  • 3-year warranty, per the listing

Key specifications

Model PLJW 129.36
Mount Wall
Stated width 36 in
CFM (as stated) 900
Fan speeds 4
Filters Dishwasher-safe filters
Noise (as stated) 5 sones at top speed
Warranty (per listing) 3 years

Why we recommend it

It suits a pro-style 36-inch gas range in a home that can give it a proper duct and make-up air.

Skip it if your range is electric or your cooking is gentle, because you would be paying in noise and installation for air you don’t need.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • High stated airflow
  • Standard 6-inch duct
  • Longer warranty than some

Cons

  • Will need make-up air under many codes
  • Loud at top speed
  • Ducted only in this listing

5. FOTILE Pixie Air 36-Inch Under Cabinet Range Hood – Big Airflow, Low Stated Noise

Best quiet high-CFMFOTILE Pixie Air UQG3602 36” Stainless Steel Under Cabinet Range Hood

FOTILE takes a different approach from the baffle hoods here. The Pixie Air UQG3602 states up to 850 CFM and as low as 38 dB, with what FOTILE calls WhisPower aerodynamics, four fan speeds and a coverage claim of 7.2 square feet or a 4 to 6 burner cooktop. Read those two figures carefully: the low noise and the high airflow don’t describe the same speed.

Instead of a row of filters, it uses a detachable capture shield that goes in the dishwasher. You wave a hand to turn it on or off, which is handy when your fingers are greasy, and the listing says an air management system detects fumes and vents them automatically. There is a touchscreen panel for speeds and lights.

As with the Proline, 850 CFM is beyond the 400 CFM line, so check about make-up air. FOTILE describes a five-year limited warranty, broken down as two years of full parts and labor and three more on parts. Electronics and motion controls also mean more things that can need service down the line than on a push-button hood.

Why we like it

  • Up to 850 CFM, per FOTILE
  • As low as 38 dB, per FOTILE
  • Wave control and auto fume detection
  • Dishwasher-safe capture shield

Key specifications

Warranty (per listing) 5-year limited (2 full, 3 parts)

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who wants high airflow from under a cabinet and cares about how the kitchen sounds while dinner is going.

Skip it if you prefer simple buttons, or would rather not have sensors in a hood.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong airflow under a cabinet
  • Easy shield cleaning
  • Wave control keeps the panel clean

Cons

  • Above the make-up air line
  • More electronics to go wrong
  • No baffle filters

6. IKTCH 36-Inch 900 CFM Wall Mount Range Hood – Gesture Control and Stated Noise at Both Ends

Best gesture controlIKTCH 36-inch Wall Mount Range Hood 900 CFM Ducted/Ductless Convertible

This IKTCH chimney hood is the wall-mount pick for a cook who wants a lot of air and controls that stay clean. The listing states a maximum of 900 CFM across four speeds, and it gives a noise figure at both ends of the range: 40 decibels on the lowest setting and 65 at most. Not every listing here states both.

A wave of the hand changes the fan through gesture sensing, and there is also a touch panel and a remote. Three stainless steel permanent filters come with it and go in the dishwasher, per the listing, and two 3-watt LEDs have adjustable brightness. It is listed as ducted or ductless convertible, and the listing’s warranty field reads 5 years from the manufacturer.

At 900 CFM you are well past the 400 CFM make-up air line on high, so settle that before you buy, as with the Proline. The listing does not say whether the filters are baffle or mesh, and it does not state the duct size, so check the manual against your existing duct.

Why we like it

  • Stated 900 CFM over four speeds
  • Noise stated at 40 dB low and 65 dB max
  • Gesture, touch and remote control
  • Three dishwasher-safe stainless filters

Key specifications

Noise (as stated) 40 dB lowest, 65 dB max
Warranty (per listing) 5 years, manufacturer

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook with a big range on an open wall who wants high airflow, published noise figures and a panel that stays free of greasy fingerprints.

Skip it if you want to stay under the make-up air line, or if you would rather have plain push buttons than gesture sensing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • High stated airflow
  • Noise stated at low and high
  • Long stated warranty

Cons

  • Above the make-up air line on high
  • Filter type and duct size not stated
  • More electronics to go wrong

7. Hauslane 36-Inch 860 CFM Under Cabinet Range Hood – Runs Itself, With a Lifetime Motor Warranty

Best automaticHauslane Range Hood Under Cabinet 36 Inch Ducted 500-860CFM with Auto-Pilot

This Hauslane adds automation to a powerful under-cabinet hood. The listing states 860 CFM from dual motors and six speeds. An Auto-Pilot sensor turns on the lights when you approach, starts the fan when cooking begins and winds it down when you are done, according to Hauslane.

The VersaVent system is a practical plus: it fits 6-inch round or 3-1/4 by 10-inch rectangular duct, venting from the top or rear, and it comes with adapters. That makes it easier to fit into an older kitchen with existing ductwork. Three dishwasher-safe baffle filters come with the 36-inch model, and the GU10 LED bulbs are easy to replace.

We’d take the listing’s noise language with some care: it describes this as “theoretically” the quietest hood and gives no sone or decibel figure on this listing. Hauslane’s warranty is 2 years on parts and labor plus lifetime coverage on the motor. At 860 CFM, make-up air is again a question to settle first. Some cooks also just won’t want a hood that decides for itself.

Why we like it

  • 860 CFM from dual motors, per the listing
  • Six speeds and Auto-Pilot sensor
  • Three-way venting with adapters
  • Lifetime motor coverage

Key specifications

Model PS19

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who forgets to turn the fan on, or who has awkward existing ductwork, and who has a plan for make-up air.

Skip it if you want published noise figures before you buy, because this listing has none.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Automation that starts itself
  • Fits several duct types
  • Long motor coverage

Cons

  • Noise figure not stated
  • Over the make-up air line
  • Sensor features add complexity

How to size a hood for a 36-inch range

Width comes first

Buy a hood at least as wide as the cooktop. Smoke rises and spreads, so a narrower hood loses what comes off the outer burners. Measure too, because a hood sold as 36-inch may be a little narrower: the COSMO Haven here is 35.75 inches. Island setups are a different case and generally need a wider hood.

Match the airflow to the fuel

A common rule of thumb for gas is about 100 CFM for every 10,000 BTU of total burner output, so add up your burners and do the math. Electric and induction ranges need less, because they give off far less heat. Your range maker’s manual comes before any rule of thumb. Remember that the figures above are maximums and that long duct runs reduce what you actually get.

Know the 400 CFM line

Broan-NuTone explains that the IRC and IMC codes say systems “capable of exhausting in excess of 400 cfm” must have make-up air, at a rate about equal to the exhaust rate. It adds that some states or cities change that threshold, and that you should always check with your local jurisdiction. Broan-NuTone says the code language isn’t clear on which rating applies, and recommends using the HVI-certified rating. This is why the ZLINE at 400 and the Broan at 350 are simpler to install, and why five of these seven need the question asked. A contractor can tell you what your house needs.

Filters and how much you fry

Baffle filters catch grease well and go straight in the dishwasher, which makes them the better bet for frying and searing. Mesh filters work, but need more frequent cleaning. Don’t judge recirculating hoods by CFM alone, since they filter air and return it to the room. For that setup, see our guide to the best non-vented range hood.

Check the height and the duct

Follow the hood’s manual on mounting height. Match the duct size too, because most of these use 6-inch round but the COSMO lists 7.9-inch. If you have little space above the range, our low-profile range hood guide has shorter options. Use a licensed electrician or HVAC contractor where your local code requires one.

How we chose these seven 36-inch hoods

We looked for hoods sold as 36-inch models that state their CFM, from identifiable makers, in stock on Amazon as a New offer when we checked. We skipped two listings whose own figures conflict: a FOTILE wall hood with 1300 CFM in the title and 700 CFM in the text, and Hauslane wall hoods sold as 36-inch with a smaller stated width. Specifications come from the Amazon listings, and noise and airflow numbers are the makers’ claims.

Good 36-inch hoods also appear on our other guides, including the ZLINE KL3-36, COSMO Vista 36 and FOTILE EMG9008S on the wall-mount page, and we didn’t repeat them. Make-up air wording comes from Broan-NuTone’s help page. We have not used these products ourselves. A brand search of the CPSC recall database found no range hood recalls for these makers when we checked; ZLINE’s recalls cover gas ranges and wall ovens, and Broan-NuTone’s cover ventilation fans and attic ventilators.

36-inch range hood questions, answered

Can I put a 36-inch hood over a 30-inch range?

Yes, if the space allows. A wider hood gives more capture, and some cooks want the overhang. The reverse is the problem: a 30-inch hood over a 36-inch range will miss part of the outer burners.

How many CFM does a 36-inch range hood need?

It depends on the fuel, not the width alone. For gas, a common rule of thumb is about 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU. Electric and induction ranges can usually manage with less, as the 350 and 400 CFM picks here show.

Do I need make-up air for a 36-inch wall hood?

It depends on the hood’s capacity and your local code, not on the width or mount. Broan-NuTone cites the IRC and IMC threshold of more than 400 CFM. The ZLINE KB4SNX-36 and Broan GLA1363SS state 400 and 350. Five others here state more.

Can a 36-inch wall hood go under a cabinet?

Usually not, because chimney hoods are built for an open wall and need chimney clearance. A few models are sold for both, so check the listing. Here, the mount column tells you which is which.

Are sones and decibels the same?

No. They are different scales, and makers state them at different speeds, so a low dB number on the lowest speed tells you little about the top speed. Treat them as a rough guide, not a direct comparison.

Our final pick for a 36-inch range

For most kitchens, the ZLINE KB4SNX-36 is where we would start: real airflow, baffle filters and no automatic make-up air conversation under the common code line. Under a cabinet, the Broan-NuTone GLA1363SS is the quiet everyday pick. If you sear and char on a big gas range and can duct it properly, the Proline PLJW 129.36 is built for that.

A hood is only half of smoky cooking. Read up on Mexican chiles to see what you’re charring, and compare our wall-mount hood picks if you have a narrower range. Or let us do the charring and call to order at (346) 546-8283.
