Clip, Clamp or Screw Top? The Best Flour Container Glass Picks

Seven glass flour jars from Le Parfait, Kilner, Bormioli Rocco, Anchor Hocking, Ball and Oggi, sized for 2 to 5 lb bags, with the flour each one holds.

Clear glass jars tipped on their sides on a white surface, spilling almonds, seeds, oats and goji berries
Clear glass shows at a glance what is inside and how much is left.

Flour keeps best away from air, moisture and pantry bugs, and a paper bag folded over at the top does none of that well. A glass jar with a sealed lid does. Glass doesn’t hold smells, you can see at a glance how much flour is left, and a clear jar on the counter is the one you’ll actually reach for when it’s time to roll out flour tortillas.

The catch is size. Most flour is sold in 2 lb and 5 lb bags, and many pretty glass canisters hold far less. This guide sticks to glass jars from established makers that hold roughly 2 to 5 pounds of flour, with lids that seal with a gasket or a tight-fitting cap, and works out how much flour each one actually holds.

Quick verdict: which glass flour container to buy

For a 2 lb bag of flour, buy the Le Parfait Super Jar 2L: French glass with a wire bail and rubber gasket, dishwasher safe, and described by its listing as lead-free. For a full 5 lb bag, the Kilner Universal Storage Jar, 4 liter, holds about 4½ pounds of spooned flour under a push-top glass lid with a silicone gasket. If you want two flours side by side, such as all-purpose and masa harina, the Anchor Hocking Montana 96 oz pair is made in the USA and holds about 3 pounds per jar.

This page is the glass-only branch of our main guide to the best flour container, which also covers plastic and steel bins. None of the jars below are the same product as a pick on that page.

Seven picks for the best flour container glass jars on Amazon

These seven jars cover the main ways glass canisters close: a wire bail with a rubber gasket, a clip or clamp lid, a push-in glass lid with a silicone ring, a screw-on metal lid, and a two-piece mason jar lid. Each pick gives the stated capacity, our estimate of how much flour it holds, and one honest reason to skip it.

1. Le Parfait Super Jar 2L – French Glass With a Rubber Seal

Best overallLe Parfait Super Jar 2L (64oz) Glass Canning Jar

Le Parfait has made its jars in France since 1930, and the Super Jar is its classic preserving jar: a glass lid held down by a stainless steel wire bail, with an orange natural rubber gasket between lid and jar. The same seal that holds for canning keeps air and moisture away from flour on a shelf.

At 2 liters (64 oz), it holds about 8½ cups, or roughly 2¼ pounds of spooned all-purpose flour, so a standard 2 lb bag fits with a little room to spare. The listing says the jar is soda-lime glass made in France, dishwasher safe and free from BPA and lead, and that the listing itself suggests it for bulk flour, rice and pasta.

Our main flour container guide reviews Le Parfait’s 3-liter Screw Top jar. This is a different jar: the Super Jar closes with a wire bail and gasket rather than a screw cap, and the 2-liter size suits a smaller bag. We include it because it is the best-made 2-liter glass jar we found that seals with a gasket.

The gasket is the part that wears. The listing describes the rubber seal and wire bail as reusable over many cycles; check the seal when it starts to look cracked or flattened.

Why we like it

  • Wire bail and natural rubber gasket for an airtight seal, per the listing
  • Made in France; listing says BPA- and lead-free glass
  • Dishwasher safe, according to the listing
  • 2 liters holds a 2 lb bag of flour

Key specifications

Model Super Jar (part 11104)
Capacity 2 liters (64 oz)
Flour held (approx.) About 2¼ lb spooned all-purpose
Count 1 jar
Lid and seal Glass lid, stainless wire bail, natural rubber gasket
Dimensions Not stated
Dishwasher safe Yes (listing)
Made in France

Why we recommend it

It suits a home cook who buys flour in 2 lb bags and wants a jar that seals properly, goes in the dishwasher and will last for years. The gasket seal is the tightest kind of closure on this list.

Skip it if you buy 5 lb bags: you would need two jars, and the tall, rounded jar makes the last cup harder to scoop out.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Gasket seal
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Made in France

Cons

  • Too small for a 5 lb bag
  • Gasket needs replacing in time
  • Dimensions not on the listing

2. Kilner Universal Storage Jar, 4 Liter – Room for Most of a 5 lb Bag

Best for a 5 lb bagKilner Glassware Universal Storage Jar

Kilner, the English jar brand that traces its original jar to John Kilner and Co., makes this curved Universal Jar in a 4-liter size that suits bulk flour. The glass lid pushes into the mouth and seals on a silicone gasket, so there are no clips or threads to deal with when your hands are floury.

Four liters is about 17 cups, or roughly 4½ pounds of spooned all-purpose flour. Flour poured from the bag and allowed to settle packs a little tighter, so most of a 5 lb bag will go in; keep any extra in the bag and use it first. Kilner gives the dimensions as 24.2 cm tall and 19.5 cm wide (about 9½ by 7¾ inches), so measure your shelf before you buy.

The listing describes the jar as soda-lime glass with a consistent wall thickness and says it is hand wash only. It does not say where the jar is made.

Why we like it

  • 4 liters holds about 4½ lb of spooned flour
  • Push-top glass lid with a silicone gasket, per Kilner
  • Wide, curved jar that is easy to scoop from
  • From a long-established jar maker

Key specifications

Model 0025.743
Capacity 4 liters (135 oz)

Count 1 jar
Lid and seal Push-top glass lid, silicone gasket
Dimensions 24.2 x 19.5 x 19.5 cm
Dishwasher safe No, hand wash only (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who goes through flour quickly, whether for weekly flour tortillas or regular bread baking, and wants a single jar that takes most of a 5 lb bag.

Skip it if your pantry shelves are short: at about 9½ inches tall it needs space, and it has to be washed by hand.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Largest jar here
  • No clips or threads
  • Wide body for scooping

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • Tall for some shelves
  • A full 5 lb bag may not quite fit

3. Anchor Hocking Montana 96 oz Jars, Set of 2 – Flour and Masa Harina Side by Side

Best pairAnchor Hocking Montana Glass Jars with Fresh Sealed Lids

Anchor Hocking has made glass in Ohio since 1905, and these thick-walled Montana jars are still made in the USA, according to the listing. The set has two 96-ounce jars with brushed metal lids that Anchor Hocking calls Fresh Sealed lids.

Each jar holds about 12 cups, or roughly 3 pounds of spooned all-purpose flour. That makes the pair a good fit for a Mexican pantry: one jar for all-purpose flour for flour tortillas, and one for masa harina, which is lighter by volume (King Arthur gives 93 grams per cup), so the same jar holds about 2½ pounds of it.

The listing says the jars are wide-mouthed for easy scooping and dishwasher safe, while the lids are hand wash only. It does not use the word airtight for these lids, so if a gasket seal matters most to you, choose one of the clamp or bail jars instead. Our canister set guide reviews a three-jar Montana set in mixed sizes; this pair is the 96-ounce size only, which suits flour better.

Why we like it

  • Two 96 oz jars, about 3 lb of flour each
  • Thick-walled glass, made in the USA, per the listing
  • Wide mouths for scooping
  • Jars are dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model 95541
Capacity 96 oz per jar
Flour held (approx.) About 3 lb spooned all-purpose per jar
Count 2 jars

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who keeps both wheat flour and masa harina on hand and wants two matching, heavy jars on the counter.

Skip it if you need a proven airtight seal; the listing doesn’t claim one.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Two jars in one set
  • Made in the USA
  • Heavy, stable glass

Cons

  • Airtight seal not claimed
  • Lids need hand washing

4. Bormioli Rocco Fido Jar, 67.75 oz – A Clamp Lid That Opens One-Handed

Best clamp lidBormioli Rocco Fido Glass Jar with Clamp Lid

The Fido is Bormioli Rocco’s classic Italian clamp jar: a glass lid on a hinged metal clamp, sealed with a rubber gasket. Flip the clamp and the lid swings open, which is handy when one hand is holding a measuring cup.

The 67.75-ounce size is 2 liters, about 8½ cups or roughly 2¼ pounds of spooned all-purpose flour. The listing describes the jar as BPA-free glass, made in Italy, with a clamp lid and rubber gasket that lock in freshness. The listing is written mainly for fermenting, but the same seal works for dry goods.

Our canister set guide reviews a pair of 33.75-ounce Fido jars. Those hold only about a pound of flour each; this single 2-liter jar is the size that takes a full 2 lb bag. Bormioli Rocco makes larger Fido jars too, but they were not reliably in stock when we checked.

Why we like it

  • Clamp lid with a rubber gasket, per the listing
  • 2 liters holds a 2 lb bag of flour
  • Made in Italy
  • Opens with one hand

Key specifications

Model 149240MRF121990

Flour held (approx.) About 2¼ lb spooned all-purpose
Count 1 jar
Lid and seal Hinged glass lid, metal clamp, rubber gasket

Why we recommend it

It suits a baker who opens the flour jar many times a day and wants a seal that is quick to undo and close again.

Skip it if you want to scoop from a wide-open jar; the hinged lid stays attached and can get in the way of a large scoop.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Gasket seal
  • Fast to open and close
  • Italian glass

Cons

  • Hinged lid limits scooping room
  • Care instructions not stated

5. Ball Wide Mouth Half-Gallon Mason Jars, 4-Pack – Four Flours, Made in the USA

Best value for several floursBall Wide Mouth Glass Mason Jars with Lids and Bands

Ball’s half-gallon mason jars are the simplest glass flour container there is. Each 64-ounce jar holds about 8 cups, or roughly 2 pounds of spooned all-purpose flour, and four come in the pack, so you can keep all-purpose, bread flour, whole wheat and masa harina in matching jars.

The wide mouth takes a measuring cup. The jars close with Ball’s two-piece flat lid and screw band, which seal down tightly for dry storage. The listing says the jars are made in the USA and BPA-free.

Half-gallon jars are tall and narrow, so they take less shelf width than a round canister of the same capacity, but scooping the last cup from the bottom is harder. A long-handled scoop helps.

Why we like it

  • Four 64 oz jars, about 2 lb of flour each
  • Wide mouth takes a measuring cup
  • Made in the USA, per the listing
  • Replacement lids are easy to find

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Capacity 64 oz (half gallon) per jar
Flour held (approx.) About 2 lb spooned all-purpose per jar
Count 4 jars
Lid and seal Two-piece flat lid and screw band
Dimensions Not stated
Dishwasher safe Not stated on this listing
Made in USA

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who keeps several flours in 2 lb amounts and wants plain, replaceable jars rather than one large canister.

Skip it if you want one jar for a 5 lb bag, or if a metal band is fiddly for you to screw on and off every day.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Four jars in the box
  • Narrow footprint
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • Hard to scoop the last cup
  • Two-piece lid is slower to open

6. Kilner Square Clip Top Jars, 2 Liter, Set of 4 – Square Jars That Waste No Shelf Space

Best square jarsKilner Clip Top Square Glass Jar Containers Ideal for Preserving Fruit/Vegetables 2 Litre Clear (Pack of 4)

Square jars line up against each other and the back of a shelf with no gaps, which is why many pantry organizers prefer them. Kilner’s 2-liter square clip-top jars come in a set of four, each closed with a metal clip and a rubber seal.

Each jar holds about 8½ cups, or roughly 2¼ pounds of spooned flour, so two of them together take most of a 5 lb bag, with two left for other flours. The listing is brief: pack of four, 2.0-liter capacity, non-tempered glass, metal clip lid with rubber seal. It sells under Rayware, the company behind the Kilner brand.

Our canister set guide has Kilner’s 1-liter square clip-top jars, which are too small for flour. These are the 2-liter size from the same range.

Why we like it

  • Square shape uses shelf space well
  • Metal clip lid with rubber seal, per the listing
  • Four 2-liter jars, about 2¼ lb of flour each

Key specifications

Model RW-0025.513-4PCS
Capacity 2 liters per jar
Flour held (approx.) About 2¼ lb spooned all-purpose per jar
Count 4 jars
Lid and seal Metal clip lid, rubber seal

Dishwasher safe Not stated
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook with a tidy pantry shelf who wants a row of sealed flour jars that sit flush together.

Skip it if you want full care details before you buy; the listing gives very little beyond capacity and closure.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Square, space-saving shape
  • Clip lid with seal
  • Four jars

Cons

  • Sparse listing details
  • Non-tempered glass, per the listing

7. Oggi 4-Piece Glass Canister Set With Clamp Lids – One Flour Jar Plus Three Smaller

Best mixed setOggi 4 Piece Airtight Glass Storage Containers Set - Includes 4 Glass Kitchen Canisters with Clamp Lids & Silicone Seals - Farmhouse Kitchen Décor

Oggi’s four-piece set gives you one jar big enough for flour and three smaller ones for sugar, salt, cornmeal or dried chiles. The four jars hold 27, 34, 51 and 74 ounces, and all of them share a 4½-inch footprint, so they stand in a neat row of rising heights from 4¾ to 10¼ inches.

The 74-ounce jar holds about 9 cups, or roughly 2½ pounds of spooned all-purpose flour. The listing describes ultra-clear glass and traditional clamp lids with silicone seals, and calls the containers airtight. Care, per the listing, is a wipe with a damp cloth.

Our main flour container guide reviews Oggi’s jumbo stainless steel canister; this all-glass set is a different product. Only one jar here is sized for flour, so treat it as a pantry set with a flour jar in it rather than four flour containers.

Why we like it

  • 74 oz jar holds about 2½ lb of flour
  • Clamp lids with silicone seals, described as airtight
  • Same 4.5-inch footprint for all four jars

Key specifications

Model 6300
Capacity 27, 34, 51 and 74 oz
Flour held (approx.) About 2½ lb in the 74 oz jar
Count 4 jars
Lid and seal Clamp lid, silicone seal
Dimensions 4.5-inch diameter; 4.75 to 10.25 inches tall
Dishwasher safe Not stated; listing says wipe clean

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook setting up a counter row of canisters who needs one flour-sized jar among them.

Skip it if you only want flour storage, or if you buy flour in 5 lb bags; the largest jar holds about 2½ pounds.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Four jars, one flour-sized
  • Small footprint
  • Clamp lids with seals

Cons

  • Only one jar suits flour
  • Narrow jars are harder to scoop
  • Wipe-clean care only

How to choose a glass flour container

Glass does the basic job well: it doesn’t absorb smells or flavors, and you can see how much is left. What matters is the size, the seal and how easy the jar is to scoop from.

Size the jar to your bag

King Arthur Baking puts a cup of all-purpose flour at 120 grams (4¼ ounces). By that measure, a 2 lb bag fills about 7½ cups, or a little under 2 liters, and a 5 lb bag fills about 19 cups, or about 4½ liters. Flour poured straight from the bag settles more densely than spooned flour, so a jar holds a bit more than these figures, but plan on a 2-liter jar for a 2 lb bag and a 4-liter jar, or two 2-liter jars, for a 5 lb bag. Masa harina is lighter by volume (King Arthur gives 93 grams per cup), so the same jar holds less weight of it.

Four red metal canisters labeled flour, sugar, coffee and tea on a white counter
Labeled canisters are a classic way to keep flour on the counter.

Look for a real seal

A seal keeps moisture out and keeps pantry insects from getting in. The tightest closures here use a gasket: Le Parfait’s wire bail, Bormioli Rocco’s Fido clamp, Kilner’s clip tops and Oggi’s clamp lids all press a rubber or silicone ring against the glass. Kilner’s push-top lid seals on a silicone ring, and Ball’s two-piece lid screws down tight. A lid that simply sits on the jar, however heavy, is a cover, not a seal.

A wide mouth for scooping

You’ll be dipping a measuring cup into the jar, so the opening matters. Wide, round jars like the Kilner Universal and the Montana are the easiest; tall, narrow jars save shelf space but make the last cup harder to reach.

Care and the gasket

Check whether the jar and lid go in the dishwasher; several of these makers say hand wash, or don’t say at all. Gaskets are the part that wears out. Wash and dry the jar completely before refilling, since damp flour clumps, and replace a gasket that has cracked or lost its spring.

Glass, not glaze

Every jar on this list is clear glass with a glass or metal lid. Some canisters sold for flour have glazed ceramic lids or bodies; if you buy one, look for the maker’s own statement that the glaze is lead-free, and don’t rely on a seller’s description alone.

How we picked these seven glass jars

We searched Amazon US for glass flour canisters and jars between about 2 and 5 liters and kept only those from established makers that publish their own product details: Le Parfait, Kilner, Bormioli Rocco, Anchor Hocking, Ball and Oggi. We left out the many anonymous Amazon-only brands selling similar jars with bamboo lids, and we left out any product already reviewed on our main flour container guide, our canister set guide and our guide to glass food storage containers. Where a maker appears on those pages, we chose a different size or closure and say why.

For each jar we read the listing for capacity, closure, care and country of manufacture, and worked out the flour it holds from King Arthur Baking’s published cup weights. Every pick was in stock on Amazon when we checked. We also searched the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall listings for these brands and found no recall of these jars. We have not used these jars in Julia’s kitchen; the picks rest on specifications, maker information and what a kitchen needs from flour storage.

Glass flour jar questions, answered

What is the best glass container for flour?

A glass jar with a gasket seal, sized to your bag. For 2 lb bags, the Le Parfait Super Jar 2L or the Bormioli Rocco Fido 2-liter jar; for 5 lb bags, the Kilner 4-liter Universal Jar. If you keep two flours, the Anchor Hocking Montana pair is a good fit.

What size jar holds a 5 lb bag of flour?

About 4½ to 5 liters. Using King Arthur Baking’s 120 grams per cup, a 5 lb bag is roughly 19 cups of spooned all-purpose flour. Settled flour takes a little less room, so a 4-liter jar holds most of it.

Is glass better than plastic for storing flour?

Glass doesn’t hold smells or stain, and it’s easy to see into and wash. Plastic is lighter and won’t break if dropped, and many plastic flour bins are shaped for easy scooping. Both work if the lid seals; our main flour container guide covers the plastic options.

How long does flour keep in an airtight jar?

White flour keeps for months in a sealed container in a cool, dry place. Whole wheat flour has more natural oil and goes stale sooner; America’s Test Kitchen recommends keeping it in the freezer. Label the jar with the date you filled it.

Should I put the flour bag inside the jar?

You can, and it keeps the brand and best-by date with the flour, but a bag folded inside a jar wastes space. Many cooks pour the flour in and tape the label from the bag to the jar instead.

Our final pick for flour storage

Buy the Le Parfait Super Jar 2L if you buy flour in 2 lb bags and want a gasket seal and dishwasher care. Choose the Kilner 4-liter Universal Jar for most of a 5 lb bag in one jar, or the Anchor Hocking Montana pair if you keep all-purpose flour and masa harina side by side.

For plastic and steel flour bins, go back to the best flour container. To measure what comes out of the jar, see our guides to the best kitchen scale and measuring cups, and for the masa side of the pantry, the best masa harina for tortillas.
