An over-sink colander solves a small, daily problem. It hangs across the basin, so washed cilantro, tomatillos or a pound of drained beans sit above the drain instead of in a wet sink. The catch is fit. A colander that is too short drops in, and one that is too long sits on the counter edge.
So this guide starts with the tape measure. For each pick we give the span the maker states, and we say plainly when a maker does not give one. We also flag the heat limit, because some of these are not meant to take a full pot of boiling pasta water.

Quick verdict: the best over the sink colander for most sinks
Buy the Kraus Expandable Colander. It states a clear span of 15 1/8 to 19 5/8 inches, says it works with undermount and drop-in sinks, and gives a heat limit of 212°F, which is rare in this group. If your sink is narrower, the Prepworks Expandable Colander starts at 11 inches. For a very wide farmhouse sink, look at the Comfify, whose handles reach 25 inches.

Our picks for the best over the sink colander
Seven picks, led by the ones that give the clearest figures. Most are plastic or collapsible, and only one is stainless steel. That reflects what identifiable makers sell in this format.
1. Kraus Expandable Colander, Light Grey – The Clearest Stated Limits

This is a rigid plastic basket that slides out to length. Kraus gives more usable detail than anyone else here: it expands from 15 1/8 to 19 5/8 inches, the basket is 7 1/2 inches wide and 3 3/8 inches high, and it works with undermount and drop-in sinks. Measure your own sink and, if the figure falls in that range, it should sit properly.
The heat figure is what puts it first. Kraus rates the plastic to 212°F, enough to withstand boiling water, so draining pasta is within the stated limit. Most rivals here say nothing on the point, and one tells you not to do it at all.
It is a shallow basket, better for rinsing and draining than for holding a big batch. The listing is recent, so there is not yet much of a buyer record to read. It rests on Kraus’s specifications rather than a long track record.
Why we like it
- States its span to the eighth of an inch
- Rated to 212°F for boiling water
- Named for undermount and drop-in sinks
- Top-rack dishwasher safe
- Made with recycled ocean-bound plastic, per Kraus
Key specifications
| Model | CSE-1LG |
|---|---|
| Stated fit | 15 1/8 to 19 5/8 in |
| Basket | 7 1/2 in W x 3 3/8 in H |
| Material | BPA-free plastic |
| Heat limit | 212°F |
| Folds or expands | Expands in length |
| Dishwasher | Top rack |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
This suits most home sinks and a cook who wants one colander for both rinsing produce and draining pasta. The figures let you confirm the fit before you buy.
Skip it if your sink is narrower than 15 inches or you often drain large batches. The basket is shallow.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear fit and heat figures
- Works on common sink types
- Easy cleanup
Cons
- Shallow basket
- New listing with little buyer history
2. Prepworks Expandable Colander – Starts at 11 Inches

Most expandable colanders begin around 14 or 15 inches, which rules out a small apartment basin or a prep sink. Prepworks, a Progressive International brand, gives a range of 11 to 17.5 inches, the lowest starting point we found from an identifiable maker.
It has raised handles with non-slip feet to hold it in place, and Progressive also suggests it as a drying rack. The listing does not name the material or give a heat limit, so we would treat it as a rinsing tool until the maker says otherwise.
Its upper limit of 17.5 inches is short for a full-size single bowl, so it does not suit every kitchen.
Why we like it
- Lowest starting span in this group
- Non-slip feet on raised handles
- Doubles as a drying rack, per Progressive
- Sold by Progressive International directly

Why we recommend it
Choose this for a compact kitchen, a rental with a small basin, or a second sink. It is the one to try when everything else here is too long.
Skip it if your sink is over 17.5 inches wide, or you want a stated rating for boiling water.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fits small sinks
- Handles have non-slip feet
- Sold by the maker
Cons
- No stated heat limit
- Material not stated

3. Comfify Collapsible Over Sink Colander, 6 Quart – Reaches Wide Farmhouse Sinks

The Comfify is the one pick here with a named independent recommendation. Reviewed lists the Comfify 6-quart as its over-the-sink choice and says the adjustable arms helped it fit an oversized farmhouse sink. The handles extend to 25 inches, and the bowl folds down between uses.
Reviewed also reports what is less good: the coating was a bit troublesome to clean, the handles are somewhat awkward with the arms extended, and the capacity is more than a pound of pasta needs.
Read the care note before you pour. The listing says it is for rinsing produce and draining cooled foods, tells you not to pour boiling water directly into it, and warns that rice and small seeds may pass through the holes. Comfify is an Amazon-first brand.
Why we like it
- Named over-the-sink pick at Reviewed
- Handles extend to 25 inches
- Folds down for a drawer or camper
- Honest listing about its limits
Key specifications
| Model | Collapsible (gray) |
|---|---|
| Stated fit | Handles extend up to 25 in |
| Basket | 6 quart |
| Material | Not stated; Reviewed mentions a silicone coating |
| Heat limit | Do not pour boiling water directly |
| Folds or expands | Folds down; handles extend |
| Dishwasher | Hand wash recommended |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Buy this if your sink is too wide for the rigid baskets, or you want a big bowl for washing a lot of produce at once.
Skip it if you drain hot pasta straight from the pot. The maker tells you not to.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Longest reach here
- Independent recommendation
- Stores small
Cons
- Not for boiling water
- Reviewed found it fiddly to clean
4. KitchenAid Over-the-Sink Collapsible Colander, 4 Quart – Compact Bowl, Known Brand

KitchenAid’s version pairs a 4-quart bowl with expandable handles, and it collapses for cabinet storage. It is smaller than the 6-quart bowls here, which makes it easier to handle for everyday rinsing.
KitchenAid says only that the handles fit almost any size sink, with no figure. That is the weakest fit claim among our picks, so ask the maker for measurements if your sink is unusually narrow or wide.
It is dishwasher safe, and the listing describes it as sturdy for daily use. KitchenAid’s expandable stainless colander also exists, and our best colander guide covers it, so we have not repeated it here.
Why we like it
- 4-quart bowl is easy to lift
- Collapses for storage
- Dishwasher safe
- Sold by Amazon under a known brand
Key specifications
| Model | KHQ867OSMIA |
|---|---|
| Stated fit | Almost any size sink; no figure given |
| Basket | 4 quart |
| Material | Not stated |
| Heat limit | Not stated |
| Folds or expands | Collapses; handles expand |
| Dishwasher | Yes |

Why we recommend it
Good for a small household that rinses a few things at a time and needs to store the colander in a cabinet.
Skip it if you want a stated span before you buy, or you cook for a crowd.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Compact capacity
- Stores small
- Easy cleanup
Cons
- No stated span
- No stated heat limit

5. Prepworks Collapsible Over-the-Sink Colander, 6 Quart – Big Bowl With 24-Inch Arms

If you wash produce by the armful, this gives you 6 quarts with arms that extend up to 24 inches. Progressive says the bowl is rigid enough to stand on its own while still folding for storage, and non-skid tabs on the handles keep it in place.
A specially designed hole pattern is meant to drain water quickly, according to the listing. There is no stated heat limit and no material listed, so check with the maker before pouring in boiling water.
This listing was sold by a third-party seller, Best Point Sales, when we checked, while the same brand’s other colander above comes straight from Progressive. Check the seller at checkout.
Why we like it
- 6-quart capacity
- Arms extend to 24 inches
- Stands on its own
- Non-skid handle tabs
Key specifications
| Model | CC-130 |
|---|---|
| Stated fit | Arms extend up to 24 in |
| Basket | 6 quart |
| Material | Not stated |
| Heat limit | Not stated |
| Folds or expands | Folds; arms extend |

| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
A good match for wide sinks and big batches of beans or greens, when you want more room than the Kraus basket gives.
Skip it if you want an item sold by the maker or Amazon. Check who the seller is.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large bowl
- Long reach
- Folds for storage
Cons
- Third-party seller at our check
- No stated heat limit
6. Blue Ginkgo Over Sink Colander, Grey – Made in Korea, Plain Figures

Blue Ginkgo is an Amazon-first brand, but its listing is plain about what it is. The basket extends from 14 to 19 inches, a raised base holds food above standing water, and it can also stand on the counter. It is made in Korea from BPA-free plastic.
It also tells you what not to do: it is not recommended for rice or other small grains. For that, see our guide to the best rice colander. It does not give a heat limit.
The span is similar to the Kraus but starts about an inch lower, so it is worth a look if your sink just misses the Kraus range.
Why we like it
- 14 to 19 inch span
- Raised base keeps food out of standing water
- Made in Korea
- Dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Model | SC-2020 |
|---|---|
| Stated fit | 14 to 19 in |
| Basket | Not stated |
| Material | BPA-free plastic |
| Heat limit | Not stated |
| Folds or expands | Extends in length |
| Dishwasher | Yes |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
A solid choice for a standard single bowl whose width sits just under the Kraus range.
Skip it if you rinse a lot of rice. The maker says it is not suited to it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear span
- Stated country of origin
- Easy cleanup
Cons
- Not for rice or small grains
- No stated heat limit

7. Kraus Stainless Steel Workstation Colander – Steel for Ledge Sinks Only

This is not a general over-sink colander, and we want to be clear about that. It is made to sit on the integrated ledge of a workstation sink with a 17-inch width. On an ordinary sink it has nothing to rest on, because it has no extending arms.
If you have that sink, it is the sturdiest option here: chrome-plated T304 stainless steel, 16 3/4 by 8 3/4 by 3 1/8 inches, with a one-year limited warranty. Kraus says it will not rust or corrode with daily use, and it can stay on the ledge when not in use.
It is also the only stainless pick on this list. Kraus does not state a heat limit.
Why we like it
- Only stainless steel pick here
- Sits on a workstation ledge
- Stores on the ledge
- One-year limited warranty
Key specifications
| Model | CS-6 |
|---|---|
| Stated fit | Workstation ledge, 17 in width |
| Basket | 16 3/4 x 8 3/4 x 3 1/8 in |
| Material | Chrome-plated T304 stainless steel |
| Heat limit | Not stated |
| Folds or expands | Fixed size |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
| Warranty | 1 year limited |
Why we recommend it
Buy it only if you already own a workstation sink with a 17-inch ledge. For that sink, it is the most permanent-feeling choice.
Skip it if you have a standard sink. It will not span one.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stainless steel build
- Exact dimensions given
- Stays out on the ledge
Cons
- Workstation sinks only
- No span adjustment

How to choose an over-sink colander
Measure the span. Measure across the sink where the colander will rest, including the rim on both sides. Compare it with the stated range and aim to land near the middle of it, so the colander is not at full stretch.
Check your sink type. Undermount sinks have no raised lip, so grip on the counter matters more. Kraus names undermount and drop-in sinks. Workstation sinks are a separate category.
Read the heat line. If you plan to drain pasta, look for a stated limit. Only Kraus gives one here. Comfify tells you not to pour boiling water in, so believe it.
Look at hole size. Two of our picks warn against rice or small seeds. Beans, tomatillos and pasta are the better fit. For fine grains, use a mesh tool instead, such as one from our fine mesh strainer guide.
Plan for storage. Collapsible bowls fold down, while rigid baskets simply shorten. If you want something that also dries dishes, a roll-up rack from our over-sink dish rack guide may suit you better.
How we chose these seven sink colanders
We looked at what a working kitchen asks of this tool: rinsing produce and draining beans without taking up counter space. We then checked Amazon listings for current stock, the span and care each maker states, and CPSC recall records for each brand, which showed nothing on these products. We read one independent review that names a pick here, from Reviewed. We searched for reviews of the Kraus and Prepworks models and found none, so those rest on the maker details. We have not used these colanders ourselves.
Over-sink colander questions, answered
What is an expandable colander?
It is a colander whose basket or handles extend so it can rest on both sides of a sink. Kraus and Prepworks 55700 extend the basket, while Comfify and KitchenAid extend the handles.
Will it fit my sink?
Compare your measurement with the stated range. Here, the ranges run from 11 inches (Prepworks) to 25 inches (Comfify handles). KitchenAid does not give a figure.
Can I drain boiling pasta water into one?
Only if the maker allows it. Kraus rates its plastic colander to 212°F. Comfify says not to. Others do not say, so check with the maker first.
Do these work for rice?
Blue Ginkgo says no, and Comfify warns that rice may pass through. Our pasta colander guide and rice colander guide cover other jobs.
Is a stainless over-sink colander better?
Steel takes hard use well, but the only stainless model that met our bar is for workstation sinks. Our general colander guide covers stainless choices for regular sinks.
Our final word on spanning the sink
Measure first, then buy the Kraus if your sink falls within its range. For more options that do not sit across the sink, go back to our guide to the best colander, or see how this fits with the rest of the kit in our Mexican cooking tools guide. If you would rather let us do the rinsing and draining, take a look at the menu and call to order.
