Under 4 Quarts: Finding the Best Small Air Fryer for Your Counter

Eight air fryers under 4 quarts compared by capacity, stated footprint, power and warranty, with honest notes on how little some listings tell you.

A cook working at a narrow, crowded kitchen counter with a small toaster nearby
In a tight kitchen, every appliance has to earn its few inches of counter.

A full-size air fryer can take up as much room as a coffee maker and a toaster together. If you cook for one or two, live in an apartment, or just want to crisp leftover taquitos without heating the oven, something under 4 quarts makes more sense.

The catch is that small models are the ones with the thinnest listings. This guide sticks to machines with a stated capacity under 4 quarts, gives the footprint where anyone will state it, and says so when nobody does. For bigger baskets, see our main air fryer guide.

Quick verdict: which small air fryer to buy

The best small air fryer for most people is the Cosori Lite 2.1-Quart: the maker publishes its exact size, it is ETL-listed, and it has a two-year warranty. If you want a pick with an independent review behind it, the Instant Vortex 2-Quart is Real Homes’ top choice. If two quarts is too tight, the Chefman Compact 3.5-Quart has the most room and heat here.

Our picks for the best small air fryer

1. Cosori Lite 2.1-Quart Air Fryer – The Clearest Size Facts

Best overallCosori Lite 2.1 Qt Small Air Fryer

Small air fryers are easy to buy blind because so few makers give a real footprint. Cosori does. Its manual lists this model at 10.1 x 8.3 x 10.5 inches with the handle and 4.87 pounds, so you can measure your counter or cabinet before you order.

The listing adds 900 watts, a range of 170 to 400°F, a ceramic-coated basket and four functions. Cosori calls it the quietest in its range, at under 48 dB by its own figure. In 2023, CPSC announced a recall of about two million Cosori air fryers in 3.7 and 5.8-quart sizes; the listed models do not include this one.

Why we like it

  • Full dimensions and weight in the maker’s manual
  • ETL-listed, 120V and 900 watts
  • Two-year manufacturer warranty
  • Ceramic-coated, dishwasher-safe basket

2. Instant Vortex 2-Quart Mini Air Fryer – A Reviewer’s Top Small Pick

Best reviewedInstant Pot Vortex 2QT Mini Air Fryer

Real Homes names the Instant Vortex Mini its top small air fryer, giving its size as 11.73 inches high, 9.02 wide and 11.38 deep. That makes it a bit bigger on the counter than the Cosori for about the same capacity.

The listing gives a range of 120 to 400°F, four functions and one-touch programs, and says it suits one to two servings. Real Homes flags a chemical smell at first, and its capacity advice is plain: 2-quart models are for one or two people and are mostly good for side dishes.

Why we like it

  • Named top pick by Real Homes
  • Low 120°F end of the range
  • One-touch programs
  • Non-stick, dishwasher-safe basket and tray

  • Independent review we could read
  • Simple programs
  • Color options

3. Chefman Compact 3.5-Quart Air Fryer – The Biggest Basket Under 4 Quarts

Best for three or fourChefman Compact Air Fryer 3.5 QT - Slim Design Fits Small Kitchens

If two quarts sounds too tight, this is as large as this page goes while staying under four. Chefman describes a narrow body and says the 3.5-quart basket can cook for up to four people, though we would plan on fewer for anything that needs to crisp in one layer.

It runs at 1300 watts with a 450°F top end, the hottest here, and has a Frozen setting that starts low and finishes hotter. Chefman says the ceramic coating is PFAS free, and lists the machine as cETL approved with a one-year assurance.

Why we like it

  • 450°F maximum
  • 1300 watts stated
  • Narrow design named by the maker
  • cETL approved

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

It suits a small household that makes taquitos or wings for more than one person, and wants more heat than the 2-quart models offer.

Skip it if you want an exact footprint in writing, since the listing says narrow without giving dimensions.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most capacity and heat here
  • Frozen setting
  • Stated certification

Dash keeps this one to two dials: temperature up to 400°F and a 0 to 30 minute timer, with auto shut-off when the time runs out. There are no buttons or presets to learn.

The 2.6-quart basket is a useful step up from two quarts. Dash says the basket and tray are dishwasher safe but recommends a quick hand wash to protect the nonstick. The same model in black is on our value page; we repeat it here in grey because it is the plainest small fryer we could confirm.

Why we like it

  • Dial controls
  • Auto shut-off
  • 2.6-quart basket for one or two
  • Recipe guide included

Black+Decker is candid about the size, saying two quarts holds up to two servings of French fries. The listing gives no wattage or footprint, so measure carefully on arrival and check the return window.

6. Chefman 2-Quart Mini Air Fryer – A Square Basket in a Narrow Body

Best basket shapeCHEFMAN 2 Qt Mini Air Fryer – Digital Space-Saving Compact Air Fryer with Nonstick and Dishwasher Safe Basket

Round baskets waste corners. Chefman says the square basket here makes the most of its two quarts, in a narrow housing that fits in a cabinet. That matters more than it sounds at this size, because crisping depends on floor area.

It runs at 900 watts up to 400°F, with a touch display, an audible shake alarm and shut-off when the basket comes out. Chefman lists cETL approval and a one-year assurance.

Why we like it

  • Square basket
  • Audible shake notification
  • Shuts off when the basket is removed
  • cETL approved

Key specifications

Model RJ38-2T-BLACK
Capacity 2 quarts
Power 900 watts
Temperature Up to 400°F

Skip it if you want more than simple air frying, as there are no extra named functions on this listing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Good use of floor area
  • Stated watts and certification
  • Dishwasher-safe basket and rack

7. Dash Compact 2-Quart Air Fryer – A Plain, Light First Fryer

Lightest on featuresDash Compact Air Fryer - Healthy Cooking with Auto Shut-Off Feature

This is the older, simpler Dash, with adjustable temperature, a cool-touch handle and auto shut-off. The maker calls it a lightweight device with a small footprint, but this listing gives no weight or dimensions.

It has a one-year limited warranty and a removable basket. We list it because it is about as basic as an air fryer gets, not because it does anything the Tasti-Crisp does not.

Why we like it

  • Cool-touch handle
  • Auto shut-off
  • Removable basket
  • One-year warranty stated

Key specifications

Model DCAF150GBAQ02

Dimensions Not stated on the listing
Warranty 1 year limited

It suits an occasional user who wants a basic fryer for fries and reheating, in a bright color.

Skip it if you would use it daily; a model with stated watts and a longer warranty makes more sense.

  • Small
  • Easy to clean basket

8. Crux 3-Quart Digital Air Fryer – Middle Size at 1300 Watts

Best middle sizeCRUX x Marshmello 3qt Digital Air Fryer with TurboCrisp Technology

Three quarts is a sensible middle ground, and Crux pairs it with a stated 1300-watt heating system, a touch panel with presets, a 60-minute timer and a crisping tray. The listing also describes a stainless body and a PFOA-free basket.

This is a co-branded Marshmello edition, so expect the styling that goes with it. CPSC lists a 2023 recall of Crux pressure cookers; that recall covers pressure cookers, not this air fryer.

Why we like it

  • 1300 watts stated
  • 3-quart basket
  • 60-minute timer with auto shut-off
  • Dishwasher-safe basket and tray

Key specifications

Model 17499
Capacity 3 quarts
Power 1300 watts
Temperature Not stated on the listing
Controls Touch panel with presets
Dimensions Not stated on the listing
Warranty Not stated on the listing
Certification Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits two people who find 2 quarts too tight but do not need Chefman’s 3.5-quart size.

Skip it if you do not care for the co-branded look, or want a stated warranty.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong power for the size
  • Longer timer than the Dash
  • Crisping tray

Cons

  • Co-branded styling
  • No stated temperature range or warranty

Sizing an air fryer for a small kitchen

Quarts tell you who it feeds

Real Homes recommends 2-quart air fryers for one or two people and says they are mostly good for side dishes. Treat 3 to 3.5 quarts as the step up for two or three. Makers’ portion claims tend to run high, so plan on a single layer of food, not a full basket.

Measure depth with the handle

A handle adds real depth. Cosori’s own figures show this: 8.0 inches without the handle and 10.1 inches with it. Measure your counter from the wall, then leave room behind and above the machine, following the clearance in its manual.

Watts matter less than you think, but check them

The small models that state power here run from 900 to 1300 watts. More wattage generally means more heat available, but some listings give no figure at all. That is a reason to look at the booklet or the maker’s page before relying on a preset.

Basket shape beats the number

Air fryers crisp what they can reach. A square basket, as on the small Chefman, uses more of its floor than a round one. For taquitos, flautas or wings, floor area is what limits you. Our flautas and taquitos guide explains how those two differ.

Look up recalls by model

CPSC announced a 2023 recall of Cosori air fryers by model number, for 3.7 and 5.8-quart units. Any secondhand air fryer should be checked against the CPSC site by model before you plug it in.

Fries and baked snacks spread across a wooden board
Crisp food needs a single layer, so floor area matters more than quarts.

How we picked these eight small air fryers

Every pick has a stated capacity under 4 quarts and was in stock with a new lead offer when written. We read Amazon listings, Cosori’s manual and Real Homes’ small air fryer guide, and searched the CPSC recall database by brand. We have not used these machines, and only some have independent coverage we could read, so most picks rest on the listing and maker details.

Ninja is a common name in this category, but the smallest Ninja basket fryer we could confirm is 4 quarts, so it sits on our value air fryer page rather than here. One pick, the Dash Tasti-Crisp, is a different color of a model on that page, as its write-up explains.

Small air fryer questions, answered

What size air fryer is best for one person?

Real Homes recommends 2 quarts for one or two people. If you like a little extra room, 2.6 to 3 quarts is a modest step up.

Can a 2-quart air fryer cook a chicken?

None of these listings claim it. Expect sides, snacks, wings and small portions.

Is a small air fryer better than a toaster oven?

It is usually smaller and simpler. A toaster oven does more jobs; our guide to air fryer toaster ovens for small spaces covers that route.

Can I reheat tortillas or tamales in one?

A small basket suits reheating small amounts, but tortillas can dry out quickly. Our guide to reheating Mexican leftovers covers what works.

Are small air fryers quieter?

Not necessarily. Cosori states under 48 dB for this model, but most other listings here give no figure.

Do these work with accessories?

Check basket size first; many racks and liners are sized for bigger baskets. Our air fryer accessories guide can help.
