Shelves Instead of a Pit: The Best Freestanding Freezer

Seven upright freezers from 1.1 to 17 cu ft compared by capacity, frost-free or manual defrost, stated garage range, shelves and warranty.

A row of glass-door freezer cases stocked with packaged frozen food
Glass-door freezer cases with frozen food on every shelf. An upright freezer puts food at eye level the same way.

A chest freezer holds a lot, but everything you need always seems to be at the bottom. A freestanding upright freezer works the other way: a door on the front, shelves at eye level, and the quart bags of pozole, the dozen tamales and the pound of chorizo all visible when you open it. That is why many home cooks who batch-cook choose an upright for the kitchen, the laundry room or the garage.

This guide is the upright side of our best chest freezer guide, and none of the freezers here appear there. It compares seven upright models sold on Amazon, from a 1.1 cubic foot box that fits under a counter to a 17 cubic foot frost-free unit, by the things that matter: capacity, how it defrosts, whether the maker rates it for a garage, and the warranty.

Quick verdict: which upright freezer to buy

For a home with the wall space, the best freestanding freezer is the Kenmore 17.0 cu. ft. Upright Freezer: full size, four removable shelves, no manual defrosting and a switch to refrigerator mode for party weeks, according to its listing. For a mid size, the Commercial Cool 6.0 cu. ft. Upright Freezer has five full-width shelves. For a small space with a long warranty, the Danby 3.2 cu. ft. Upright Freezer is the compact pick.

The table below puts the five standout picks side by side. All seven freezers are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best freestanding freezer

These seven freezers run from a 1.1 cubic foot cube for a dorm or an RV to a 17 cubic foot upright that needs its own wall. One can switch to refrigerator mode and also defrosts itself, and one carries a garage rating in plain degrees. Each pick lists the same eight specifications, taken from the Amazon listing, so you can compare them directly.

1. Kenmore 17.0 cu. ft. Upright Freezer – Full Size, No Manual Defrosting

Best overallKenmore 17.0 Cubic Feet Capacity Upright freezer - Convertible Refrigerator/Freezer

If you buy meat in bulk, freeze produce by the season or cook for a big family, the Kenmore is the large upright here. The listing gives 17 cubic feet (480 liters) with four removable shelves and four door compartments. It is sold on Amazon by Koolatron, which makes Kenmore-brand freezers under license.

Its biggest advantage is the defrost. The listing describes a “total no-frost design” with automatic defrost, so you never have to empty the freezer and wait for the ice to melt. On a freezer this size, that saves a full afternoon a year. It also has digital touch controls with an LED display, a quick-freeze function, LED interior lighting, and two built-in alarms, one for an open door and one for high temperature.

The listing says it can switch between freezer and refrigerator mode, calls it garage ready thanks to its insulation and sealing, and says it is Energy Star certified. It does not give a garage temperature range, so check with Kenmore before you put it in a very hot or very cold garage. The warranty is two years.

Why we like it

  • Automatic defrost, per the listing.
  • Door-open and high-temperature alarms.
  • Four shelves plus four door compartments.
  • Two-year warranty, the second longest here.

Best compactDanby DUFM032A3WDB-3 3.2 cu. ft. Upright Freezer in White Environmentally friendly R600a refrigerant 3.2 cu. ft. (90 L) capacity upright freezer

The Danby is the compact upright with the strongest paperwork. Its listing gives a garage range of 0°F to 110°F, an internal range of 10.4°F down to -11.2°F, and a warranty of five years parts and labor with in-home service, the longest of any freezer here. Danby notes that installation and yearly cleaning are not covered.

At 3.2 cubic feet (90 liters) it holds one big cooking weekend: a few dozen tamales, a couple of bags of shredded chicken and some frozen masa. It has two quick-freeze shelves, a mechanical thermostat, an integrated door handle and a reversible door. It uses R600a refrigerant.

Defrosting is manual, which is normal at this size. A small freezer is quick to empty into a cooler, and NCHFP’s advice applies: defrost when the frost is about a quarter inch thick.

Why we like it

  • Garage ready from 0°F to 110°F, per the listing.
  • Internal range stated: 10.4°F to -11.2°F.

3. Koolatron 5.3 cu. ft. Compact Upright Freezer – Slim 21.7-Inch Width

Best slimKoolatron Compact Upright Freezer

The Koolatron puts 5.3 cubic feet (150 liters) into a cabinet only 21.7 inches wide, according to the listing. That makes it the one to measure for a narrow gap beside the fridge, in a pantry or at the end of a laundry room.

Inside are four fixed wire shelves with a narrow grid, which Koolatron says stops small items from falling through, so a bag of dried chiles or a tub of crema does not slide to the back. The listing gives a temperature range of 32°F to -11.2°F, set by a simple dial, and describes foam insulation and a magnetic door seal. The back is flat and the handle recessed, so it can sit close to a wall, and the door is reversible.

Defrosting is manual, and the listing does not describe the freezer as garage ready, so it belongs indoors. The warranty is one year limited.

Why we like it

  • 21.7 inches wide, per the listing.
  • Stated range of 32°F to -11.2°F.
  • Four wire shelves with a narrow grid.

4. Whynter 3.1 cu. ft. Upright Mini Freezer – Keyed Lock, Energy Star

Best with a lockWhynter Upright Mini Freezer

The Whynter is the only freezer here with a keyed cylinder lock, according to the listing. That matters in a shared apartment, a dorm, or a home where someone keeps raiding the paletas. It is a 3.1 cubic foot upright (the listing’s size field says 3 cubic feet) with a stainless steel door, a black cabinet and a removable slide-out shelf.

The title says it is Energy Star rated, and Whynter describes the compressor as quiet enough for a bedroom or home office. The door is reversible and the handle is recessed into the panel, so it fits a tight corner.

Defrosting is manual. The listing gives no internal temperature range or garage rating, so use a freezer thermometer to check it holds 0°F, and keep it indoors. The warranty is one year limited.

5. Commercial Cool 6.0 cu. ft. Upright Freezer – Five Full-Width Shelves

Most shelvesCommercial Cool 6.0 Cu. Ft. Upright Freezer

The Commercial Cool has the most shelves for its size of any freezer here: five full-width steel wire shelves in a 6.0 cubic foot cabinet, according to the listing. More shelves means thinner layers, which is what you want when you freeze sauces, tamales and tortillas flat and stack them like files.

The listing describes a flat back and a recessed handle for corners and tight spaces, adjustable leveling legs and a reversible door. It says the freezer carries ETL safety certification and uses R600a refrigerant. The title gives an adjustable thermostat and manual defrost.

The shelves are fixed, so a tall container may not fit, and the listing gives neither a temperature range nor a garage rating. The warranty is one year.

Why we like it

  • Five full-width wire shelves, per the listing.
  • Flat back and recessed handle.
  • Adjustable leveling legs.

6. Avanti 2.8 cu. ft. Upright Freezer – Three Metal Shelves, Flush Back

Best for an office or denAvanti Upright Freezer Compact Design with 3 Fixed Metal Shelves

Avanti’s 2.8 cubic foot upright is a simple, small freezer. The listing describes three fixed metal shelves, an easy-access manual temperature control, a reversible door, adjustable legs and a flush-back design for a tight spot against the wall.

It is a good size for a home office, a den or a spare room where you want ice, a few frozen meals and a bag of frozen fruit for licuados without walking to the kitchen. It is a little smaller than the Danby and the Whynter, so it fits where they might not.

The listing does not state the defrost type, a temperature range or a garage rating, so use a freezer thermometer and keep it indoors. Avanti backs it with a one-year limited warranty.

Why we like it

  • Three fixed metal shelves, per the listing.
  • Flush-back design for tight spaces.
  • Reversible door and adjustable legs.
  • One-year limited warranty from Avanti.

7. Frigidaire 1.1 cu. ft. Upright Freezer – The Smallest, for RVs and Dorms

SmallestFrigidaire Upright Freezer

The Frigidaire is the smallest freezer here, at 1.1 cubic feet in the listing’s size field (the title rounds it to 1 cubic foot). It is part of Frigidaire’s retro-styled Platinum Design Series, and the listing pitches it for kitchens, trailers, RVs, dorms and offices.

The listing describes interior wire shelving, a flush back and a recessed handle for small spaces, a reversible door, a vinyl-coated metal finish and manual defrost. At this size it is a backup for ice, a few frozen meals and a bag of frozen tortillas, not a place for a tamalada.

The listing gives no temperature range or garage rating. The warranty is one year parts and labor. Frigidaire-brand minifridges made by Curtis International were recalled in 2025 and 2026, but the recalled models are refrigerators (EFMIS series), not this freezer; see the method section below.

Why we like it

  • Smallest footprint in this guide.
  • Flush back and recessed handle.
  • Reversible door.
  • One year parts and labor, per the listing.

Upright or chest: which freestanding freezer fits your kitchen

Both kinds stand on their own and plug into a normal outlet. The difference is the door. An upright opens at the front like a refrigerator, so food is on shelves at eye level and you can see what you have. A chest opens at the top, so food sits in layers and the oldest packs end up at the bottom.

Uprights take less floor space for the same capacity because they go up instead of out. They also make rotation easy: put new tamales at the back, move the older ones forward. Chest freezers usually give more usable space per cubic foot, because there are no shelves or door bins, and more of them are rated for garages. If you are still deciding, our best chest freezer guide covers the other side.

Rows of clear food storage containers stacked on white shelves
Clear containers on open shelves. Stackable, see-through containers make an upright freezer easier to keep sorted.

How to choose an upright freezer for batch cooking

Size it to the way you cook. Around 1 to 3 cubic feet is backup space for ice and a few meals. Five to 7 cubic feet suits a family that makes tamales, pozole and carnitas in batches through the year. Fourteen cubic feet and up is for households that buy meat in bulk or freeze produce by the season.

Decide between frost-free and manual defrost. A frost-free freezer runs automatic defrost cycles, so frost does not build up on the walls and you never have to empty it. Of our picks, only the Kenmore 17.0 states automatic defrost. A manual-defrost freezer needs to be emptied, unplugged and thawed when the frost builds up; the National Center for Home Food Preservation at the University of Georgia says to do it at least once a year or when frost is a quarter inch thick. On a small freezer that is an hour’s job. On a big one, frost-free saves real time.

A tidy garage with metal storage shelves, hooks on the walls and a wooden ceiling
A home garage with shelving. Check the maker’s stated temperature range before a freezer goes out here.

Read the garage rating as a range, not a label. Danby gives 0°F to 110°F. Kenmore says garage ready without a range, and the other listings do not mention a garage at all. If your garage gets very hot in summer or very cold in winter, choose a model whose stated range covers it. Keep the freezer out of direct sun and away from the water heater.

Look at the shelves. Removable shelves (Kenmore) let you fit a tall stockpot. Fixed wire shelves (Koolatron, Commercial Cool, Avanti) keep flat packs sorted. Either way, a few bins help: our guide to freezer organizers includes wire baskets sized for upright shelves.

Check the warranty. Warranties here run from one year to five years parts and labor. A freezer full of tamales and meat is worth more than the freezer, so a longer warranty is a real advantage.

Keeping the freezer at 0°F

The number that matters is zero. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the freezer should be at 0°F or below, and recommends an inexpensive appliance thermometer for the freezer because the built-in dial does not tell you the actual temperature. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service says that food stored constantly at 0°F will always be safe; only the quality suffers with long storage. It also notes that freezing inactivates bacteria rather than killing them, so thawed food needs the same care as fresh.

Several of the freezers here state a coldest setting well below zero, such as -11.2°F for the Danby and the Koolatron. Set the dial, wait a day, and check the thermometer before you load it full. If you want a warning when the temperature rises, for example after a power cut or a door left ajar, our best freezer alarm guide covers sensors that send an alert to your phone.

How we chose these seven freezers

We did not run these freezers ourselves. We searched Amazon for upright freezers from recognizable appliance brands, kept those listed as in stock when we checked, and dropped listings with unclear branding, unrelated product text or no identifiable maker. We also left out every model on our chest freezer page. For each one we recorded the capacity, defrost type, garage rating, temperature range, shelves and warranty exactly as the listing states them, and wrote “Not stated” where a listing is silent.

Several well-known options did not make it. We found no GE, Whirlpool, Hisense, Insignia or Arctic King upright freezer in stock on Amazon. The Frigidaire 16 cubic foot frost-free upright, the Black+Decker 11 and 14 cubic foot convertibles, the Hamilton Beach uprights, the Avanti 23 cubic foot model, the larger Danby and the Koolatron 7 cubic foot showed only limited stock. Midea’s 7.1 cubic foot convertible upright went out of stock. The Kenmore and Danby picks here showed limited stock at our last check, so check the listing before you plan around them. A Summit 4.0 cubic foot frost-free listing had product text for an unrelated item, so we left it out.

We also searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for each brand. We found no recall for any of the seven models on this page. The brand-level recalls we found are for other products: Danby ranges (2022), Kenmore ranges, microwaves and dehumidifiers, Avanti water dispensers (2004), and Frigidaire-brand minifridges made by Curtis International (EFMIS models, 2025 and 2026). If you buy a used freezer, check its model number on cpsc.gov.

Upright freezer questions, answered

What is a freestanding freezer?

A freezer that stands on its own rather than being built into cabinetry. Upright and chest freezers are both freestanding. This guide covers uprights, which have a front door and shelves; built-in undercounter freezers need a cabinet opening and are not included.

Is a frost-free upright freezer worth it?

For a large freezer, usually yes, because defrosting a full-size manual freezer means finding somewhere to keep all the food while it thaws. For a 3 cubic foot freezer, manual defrost is a short job once a year. In this guide, the Kenmore 17.0 is the one that states automatic defrost.

Can an upright freezer go in the garage?

Only if the maker rates it for that. The Danby states 0°F to 110°F. The Kenmore says garage ready without a range. The rest do not mention garages, so keep them indoors.

What temperature should an upright freezer be?

0°F or below, according to the FDA and the USDA. Keep a freezer thermometer inside and check it, rather than relying on the dial.

How long do frozen tamales keep?

At a steady 0°F, the USDA says frozen food stays safe; storage time affects quality. Wrap tamales well, freeze them flat in labeled bags, and use the oldest first. Our guide on how to reheat Mexican leftovers covers bringing them back.

Our final pick for an upright freezer

If you have the wall space, buy the Kenmore 17.0: a big freezer that defrosts itself, with removable shelves and a refrigerator mode for party weeks. Choose the Commercial Cool 6.0 for a mid size with five shelves, the Danby 3.2 for a small freezer with a five-year warranty, and the Koolatron 5.3 for a narrow space.

Prefer a lid on top? See our best chest freezer guide. Packing matters as much as the freezer: seal carne asada flat with a vacuum sealer, and portion salsas and pozole into food freezer bags. New to tamales? Start with what tamales are. If you would rather someone else made them, see the menu and call to order.
