Convection, Size or Speed? The Best Toaster Oven for Your Kitchen

Eight toaster ovens from Breville, Cuisinart, Panasonic, Ninja and more, compared on stated capacity, functions, top temperature, power and warranty.

Most of what a toaster oven does in a home kitchen is small work that a full oven does badly: a tray of enchiladas for two, a pair of molletes under the broiler, yesterday’s tortillas crisped into tostadas, a plate of leftovers that needs heat without turning rubbery. A restaurant kitchen has a salamander and a hot flat-top for those jobs. At home, a good toaster oven is the closest thing, and it heats in minutes without warming the whole house.

This guide covers eight toaster ovens from Breville, Cuisinart, Panasonic, BLACK+DECKER, Ninja and Hamilton Beach, from a simple four-slice oven with two dials to large convection models with air fry. For each we list the capacity the maker states, the cooking functions, the stated top temperature, power, interior and warranty. Where a figure is not published, we say “Not stated” rather than guess.

Quick verdict: which toaster oven to buy

For most kitchens, the best toaster oven is the Breville Smart Oven Pro: a 13.5 by 11.5-inch interior that takes a 13-inch pizza, ten functions including convection and slow cook, and five quartz elements that Breville steers to where the food needs heat. If you cook for a family, the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro fits a 9 by 13-inch pan and carries a two-year warranty. The Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven with Grill is the air-fry combo with a three-year warranty, the Panasonic FlashXpress is the small, no-preheat oven for quick reheating, and the BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven is the simple budget pick.

The table below shows the five we would steer most cooks toward, one for each kind of kitchen. All eight ovens are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best toaster oven

These eight ovens run from a two-dial four-slicer to a one-cubic-foot convection oven that fits a turkey. Each review covers who it suits, the numbers that matter and one honest reason to pass on it.

1. Breville Smart Oven Pro – Steered Heat, Room for a Casserole

Best overallBreville BOV845BSS Smart Oven Pro

The Smart Oven Pro is the size most households actually need. The listing gives the interior as 13.5 by 11.5 by 5.5 inches, with room for six slices of bread, a 13-inch pizza, a nine-cup muffin tray or a 4.4-quart Dutch oven. That is enough for a small dish of enchiladas, a tray of molletes, or a stack of tortillas laid out to crisp into tostadas.

Breville’s Element iQ system uses five independent quartz elements and adjusts their power for each function. There are ten functions: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, Warm and Slow Cook. Convection, according to the listing, cuts cooking time by up to 30 percent, and the slow-cook setting runs for up to ten hours before switching itself to keep warm. An interior light comes on at the end of the cycle, and the LCD shows when preheating has finished before it starts counting down.

For a Mexican kitchen, Reheat and Broil are the two that earn their keep. Covered with foil, a dish of enchiladas reheats gently; uncovered under Broil, a split bolillo with beans and cheese browns the way molletes should. A rack, a 12-inch enamel baking pan, a matching broil rack and a 13-inch nonstick pizza pan come in the box. It draws 1,800 watts, and the listing gives a one-year limited warranty. Breville does not state the top temperature on its US page; a US retailer lists 120°F to 450°F.

Why we like it

  • Five quartz elements with heat steered by function (listing)
  • Takes a 13-inch pizza or a 4.4-quart Dutch oven (listing)
  • Convection plus a ten-hour slow-cook setting (listing)
  • Interior light and preheat signal on the LCD (listing)

Key specifications

Model BOV845BSS
Capacity (stated) 13.5 x 11.5 x 5.5 in interior; 6 slices, 13-in pizza
Functions 10, incl. convection, reheat, slow cook
Max temp (stated) 450°F (retailer); not on Breville’s page
Wattage 1,800 W, 110–120 V
Interior Not stated; enamel baking pan and broil rack included
Warranty 1-year limited (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits a household of two to four that wants one oven for toast, reheating, small bakes and broiling, with enough control to do each one properly. It is the model to buy if you only want one.

Skip it if you regularly bake in 9 by 13-inch pans; the interior is too small for them, and the Air Fryer Pro below is the better fit.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Useful middle size
  • Ten functions with convection
  • Good set of pans included
  • Interior light

Cons

  • One-year warranty only
  • No air-fry setting
  • Top temperature not on Breville’s own page

2. Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro – Fits a 9 x 13 Pan

Best for big batchesBreville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro

The Air Fryer Pro is the big Breville, and it is the toaster oven for a family. Breville calls the interior one cubic foot; the listing gives it as 16 by 13.5 by 7 inches, which fits nine slices of bread, most 9 by 13-inch pans, a 12-cup muffin tray, a 5-quart Dutch oven or, according to the listing, a 14-pound turkey. A full pan of enchiladas fits here, which is not true of most toaster ovens.

It has thirteen functions: Toast, Bagel, Broil, Bake, Roast, Warm, Pizza, Proof, Air Fry, Reheat, Cookies, Slow Cook and Dehydrate. The convection fan has two speeds; the higher “super convection” setting drives air fry and dehydrating, and the listing says the oven can dehydrate up to four trays at once. Like the Smart Oven Pro, it uses five quartz elements under Element iQ control, and the listing adds sensing and digital PID temperature control. US retailers list a range of 80°F to 480°F.

Two racks, a 13-inch pizza pan, a 9 by 13-inch broil rack and enamel roasting pan, and a mesh basket for air frying and dehydrating come with it. It draws 1,800 watts and carries a two-year limited warranty. Breville gives the outside as 21.4 by 17.3 by 12.7 inches, so measure your counter and the space under your cabinets first.

Why we like it

  • Takes most 9 x 13-inch pans (Breville)
  • Thirteen functions incl. air fry and proof (listing)
  • Two-speed convection fan (listing)
  • Two-year limited warranty (listing)

Key specifications

Model BOV900BSS
Capacity (stated) 1 cu ft; 16 x 13.5 x 7 in interior; 9 slices
Functions 13, incl. air fry, proof, dehydrate
Max temp (stated) 480°F (retailers)
Wattage 1,800 W, 120 V
Interior Not stated; enamel roasting pan included
Warranty 2-year limited (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits a family, or anyone who wants a second oven that can take a real casserole dish and also air fry. Proof and dehydrate make it useful beyond reheating.

Skip it if your counter is short on depth or you mostly toast and reheat for one or two; it is large and heavy for that job.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Largest interior here
  • Air fry and dehydrate built in
  • Two racks included
  • Longer warranty than the Pro

Cons

  • Big footprint
  • Top tier for a toaster oven
  • Top temperature from retailers, not Breville

3. Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven with Grill – Air Fry and a Griddle Plate

Best air fryer comboCuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven with Grill

This is Cuisinart’s TOA-70 air fryer toaster oven in the version that adds a grill. It has eight settings: air fry, toast, convection bake, bake, convection broil, broil, grill and warm. The listing says it toasts six slices, bakes a 12-inch pizza, roasts a four-pound chicken or air fries three pounds of wings.

Cuisinart’s AirAdvantage design puts the fan and a heater together at the top of the oven to push hot air down onto the food. The controls are dials: a temperature dial running from warm to 450°F, a toast shade selector and a 60-minute timer with auto shutoff. Dials are slower than buttons, but they are easy to read and there is nothing to learn.

The useful extra for a Mexican kitchen is the ceramic nonstick reversible grill and griddle plate. The flat side will warm tortillas or toast a quesadilla; the ridged side marks peppers and onions. An oven rack, baking pan that doubles as a drip tray and an air-fry basket are included, and the listing describes the interior as easy-clean stainless steel. It is rated at 1,800 watts and carries a limited three-year warranty, the longest here.

Why we like it

  • Air fry, convection and grill in one oven (listing)
  • Reversible ceramic nonstick grill and griddle plate (listing)
  • Simple dial controls with a 60-minute timer (listing)
  • Limited three-year warranty (listing)

Key specifications

Model TOA-70BKS
Capacity (stated) 6 slices, 12-in pizza, 4-lb chicken
Functions 8, incl. air fry, grill, convection bake and broil
Max temp (stated) 450°F
Wattage 1,800 W
Interior Stainless steel
Warranty Limited 3-year (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook who wants air frying without a separate basket fryer on the counter, and who likes plain dials. The griddle plate makes it more useful for tortillas and quesadillas than most combos.

Skip it if you want presets and a digital display; everything here is set by hand.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Longest warranty in this guide
  • Griddle and grill plate included
  • Stainless interior
  • Room for a 12-inch pizza

Cons

  • No digital controls or presets
  • Interior dimensions not stated in the listing
  • Several near-identical TOA versions to sort through

4. Panasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven – No Preheat, Small Footprint

Best small ovenPanasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven Countertop

The FlashXpress works differently from the other ovens here. Instead of standard heating rods, it uses two infrared elements, one at the front and one at the back, and Panasonic says it needs no preheating. For the jobs a small oven does most, like warming two enchiladas, crisping a tostada or toasting a bolillo, skipping the preheat is the main point.

It is compact: the listing gives it as about 13 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 10.25 inches high, and it takes four slices of toast. A US retailer lists a 9-inch pizza and a temperature range of 250°F to 500°F, the highest stated top temperature among our picks. There are six one-touch presets plus manual temperature and timer, and the rack is linked to the door so it slides out toward you when you open it. Auto shutoff is built in, and it draws 1,300 watts. The warranty is one year.

A note on recalls: in July 2026 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of Panasonic’s larger NB-G200 toaster oven over power-cord insulation. The model recommended here is the NB-G110P, which is not named in that recall. Check the model number on the listing before you buy.

Why we like it

  • Double infrared heating, no preheat needed (listing)
  • Rack slides out with the door (listing)
  • Rated to 500°F (retailer)
  • Small footprint (listing)

Key specifications

Model NB-G110P
Capacity (stated) 4 slices; 9-in pizza (retailer)
Functions 6 presets plus manual; reheat, defrost
Max temp (stated) 500°F (retailer)
Wattage 1,300 W
Interior Not stated
Warranty 1 year (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits one or two people who mainly reheat, toast and crisp small portions and want the oven ready the moment the door shuts. It is also a good fit for a small kitchen or an office.

Skip it if you want to bake or roast in quantity; the cavity is small and there is no convection fan.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No preheat
  • Highest stated top temperature here
  • Compact
  • Lower power draw than the 1,800 W ovens

Cons

  • Small interior
  • No convection
  • A different Panasonic model has been recalled, so check the model number

5. BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven – Simple Dials, Low Cost

Budget pickBLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven

Plenty of people want a toaster oven that toasts, broils and reheats, and nothing else. This BLACK+DECKER is that oven. It has four functions, bake, broil, toast and keep warm, set with dials, and room for four slices of bread or a 9-inch pizza.

BLACK+DECKER calls its interior design EvenToast and says it spreads heat evenly for toasting. The 30-minute timer has a stay-on setting for longer bakes, and a ready light and an audible signal tell you when the time is up. A slide-out crumb tray, a bake pan and a broil rack are included; the bake pan is the right size for two or three enchiladas, or a couple of molletes under the broiler.

The listing does not give the wattage or the top temperature. US retailers list it at 1,150 watts with a maximum of 450°F. It comes with a two-year limited warranty, which is longer than several ovens that cost much more.

Why we like it

  • Plain dial controls, nothing to learn (listing)
  • Stay-on timer for longer bakes (listing)
  • Crumb tray, bake pan and broil rack included (listing)
  • Two-year limited warranty (listing)

Key specifications

Model TO1745SSG
Capacity (stated) 4 slices or 9-in pizza
Functions 4: bake, broil, toast, keep warm
Max temp (stated) 450°F (retailer)
Wattage 1,150 W (retailer)
Interior Not stated
Warranty 2-year limited (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits a cook on a budget, or anyone who wants a second small oven for toast and reheating and does not care about convection or presets.

Skip it if you want even browning on larger items or any air-fry function; it is a basic radiant oven.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Simple to use
  • Two-year warranty
  • Small footprint

Cons

  • No convection
  • 30-minute timer only
  • Wattage and top temperature only from retailers

6. Ninja Flip Toaster Oven and Air Fryer – Folds Up Off the Counter

Best for tight countersNinja® Flip Toaster Oven & Air Fryer

The Ninja Flip solves a different problem: counter space. When you are done cooking, it flips up on its back to stand against the backsplash, and Ninja says it then takes up 50 percent less space. Laid flat, it is wide and low, at about 17 by 15.75 inches and under 8 inches tall according to the listing.

That low, wide shape is built for flat food. Ninja says it bakes a 12-inch pizza, toasts six slices, fits six chicken breasts and air fries up to four pounds. It has eight functions: air fry, roast, broil, bake, pizza, toast, bagel and dehydrate. Ninja’s OvenCrisp design combines six infrared elements with circulating air, and the stated range is 85°F to 450°F. A sheet pan of tortilla wedges for chips, or a row of tostadas, is exactly the kind of food it suits.

An air-fry basket, sheet pan, wire rack and removable crumb tray are included. It draws 1,800 watts, and Ninja’s product page gives a one-year limited warranty. Because the cavity is shallow, tall items like a Dutch oven or a deep casserole will not fit, so check the height of the dishes you use.

Why we like it

  • Flips up to save counter space (listing)
  • Takes a 12-inch pizza or six slices (listing)
  • Air fry and dehydrate built in (listing)
  • Range from 85°F for dehydrating (listing)

Key specifications

Model SP151
Capacity (stated) 6 slices, 12-in pizza, 4 lb air fry
Functions 8, incl. air fry, bagel, dehydrate
Max temp (stated) 450°F
Wattage 1,800 W
Interior Not stated
Warranty 1-year limited (Ninja)

Why we recommend it

It suits a small kitchen where a toaster oven cannot live on the counter full time, and a cook who mostly makes flat food: toast, pizza, chips, wings.

Skip it if you bake in tall dishes or want to slow cook or proof; the cavity is shallow.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stores upright
  • Wide enough for a 12-inch pizza
  • Air fry included

Cons

  • Low interior height
  • One-year warranty
  • Interior finish not stated

7. Breville Mini Smart Oven – Breville Control in a Small Box

Best compact smart ovenBreville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven

The Mini Smart Oven gives you Breville’s Element iQ control in a smaller cavity. The listing gives the interior as 11 by 10 by 4 inches, enough for four slices of toast, an 11-inch pizza or a six-cup muffin tray, with three rack positions.

It has eight functions: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Broil, Pizza, Roast, Cookies and Reheat. Like the larger Breville ovens, it uses five independent quartz elements and an LCD, and it draws 1,800 watts, which helps it heat quickly for its size. The inside walls have a nonstick coating for easier cleaning, according to the listing, and there is a pull-out crumb tray and auto shutoff. A 10-inch enamel baking pan comes with it.

There is no convection fan, and Breville does not state the top temperature. The warranty is one year.

Why we like it

  • Five quartz elements with Element iQ control (listing)
  • Fits an 11-inch pizza in a small footprint (listing)
  • Nonstick interior walls (listing)
  • Three rack positions (listing)

Key specifications

Model BOV450XL
Capacity (stated) 11 x 10 x 4 in interior; 4 slices, 11-in pizza
Functions 8, incl. reheat, broil, pizza
Max temp (stated) Not stated
Wattage 1,800 W, 110–120 V
Interior Nonstick-coated walls
Warranty 1-year limited (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits one or two people who want better control than a basic dial oven in a size that fits a small counter.

Skip it if you need room for a casserole; the 4-inch interior height rules out most baking dishes.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Smart controls in a small size
  • Nonstick walls
  • Quick to heat for its size

Cons

  • No convection
  • Low interior
  • Top temperature not stated

8. Hamilton Beach Easy Reach Toaster Oven – Roll-Top Door Stays Clear

Easiest accessHamilton Beach Easy Reach 4 Slice Countertop Toaster Oven

Most toaster oven doors drop down in front of you and get in the way when you reach in. The Easy Reach has a roll-top door that slides up and back over the oven, so you can get at the food from the front without leaning over a hot door, and drips land on the pan rather than on the door.

It is a simple oven: bake, broil and toast, with a temperature dial from 200°F to 450°F, a 30-minute timer with a stay-on setting, a ready bell and auto shutoff. It holds four slices of toast or a 9-inch pizza and has two rack positions. A bake pan, an oven rack and a slide-out crumb tray are included; for broiling, the bake pan sits on the lower supports to catch drippings.

Hamilton Beach says the roll-top door and crumb tray both come out for cleaning, which is useful because roll-top doors are otherwise awkward to wipe. The listing does not state the wattage. The warranty is one year.

Why we like it

  • Roll-top door that stays out of the way (listing)
  • Removable door and crumb tray for cleaning (listing)
  • Stay-on timer and ready bell (listing)

Key specifications

Model 31344DA
Capacity (stated) 4 slices or 9-in pizza
Functions 3: bake, broil, toast
Max temp (stated) 450°F
Wattage Not stated
Interior Not stated
Warranty 1 year (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who finds a drop-down door awkward, including cooks who reach in from a seat or work on a narrow counter.

Skip it if you want convection or more than three functions; it is a basic oven with a clever door.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Door does not block access
  • Simple dials
  • Removable door for cleaning

Cons

  • No convection
  • Wattage not stated
  • Small capacity

How to choose a toaster oven for your kitchen

Toaster ovens look similar on the shelf. These are the differences that change what you can cook in one.

Interior size, not slice count

“Four-slice” and “six-slice” tell you little. Look for the stated interior dimensions or the largest pan it takes. A 9-inch pizza oven holds two enchiladas; a 13-inch oven like the Smart Oven Pro holds a small baking dish; only the Breville Air Fryer Pro among our picks takes most 9 by 13-inch pans. Check the interior height too, because low ovens like the Ninja Flip and Breville Mini will not take a deep dish.

Convection and air fry

A fan moves hot air around the food, which helps it brown evenly and, at high speed, crisp the way an air fryer does. The Breville Smart Oven Pro, Air Fryer Pro, Cuisinart and Ninja have fans; the Panasonic, BLACK+DECKER, Breville Mini and Hamilton Beach do not. For reheating enchiladas under foil, a fan matters little. For chips, wings and tostadas, it helps.

Broil strength and top temperature

Molletes, melted cheese and charred tomatoes for salsa all come from the top element. Stated maximums among our picks run from 450°F to 500°F, and several makers do not publish one at all, so treat the number as a rough guide. Ovens with more elements, or with elements close to the food, will broil faster.

Controls

Dials (Cuisinart, BLACK+DECKER, Hamilton Beach) are quick and obvious. Digital controls with presets (Breville, Ninja, Panasonic) are more precise and remember settings, at the cost of a few button presses. Choose the one you will actually use every morning.

Footprint and clearance

Toaster ovens need space around them while they run. Read the manual’s guidance on clearances, keep them away from cabinets and curtains, and measure the depth of your counter before buying one of the large models.

Cleaning and warranty

A slide-out crumb tray is standard; a nonstick or stainless interior and removable door make the rest easier. Warranties among our picks run from one year (most) to two years (Breville Air Fryer Pro, BLACK+DECKER) and three years (Cuisinart).

How we chose these eight toaster ovens

We started from what a restaurant kitchen wants from a small oven: a broiler that browns cheese without drying the rest, gentle heat for reheating sauced dishes, room for the pans you actually own, and controls you can set quickly. We then looked at toaster ovens from identifiable brands sold on Amazon in the United States and kept only those showing as in stock when we checked.

Specifications come from the Amazon listings, from the makers’ pages where we could read them (Breville’s product pages and Ninja’s warranty statement), and from US retailers where neither gave a figure, which we label as “retailer”. We also checked the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall list for every model we considered; none of the eight models above appears on it, and we note the recall of Panasonic’s NB-G200 above. We left out models that were showing low stock, unbranded sellers, and the Wolf Gourmet countertop oven, which we found on Amazon only as replacement parts.

We have not cooked with these ovens for this guide, and we did not draw on outside equipment reviews; everything here comes from the makers, the listings, retailers and our kitchen’s view of what a small oven needs to do.

What a toaster oven does well in a Mexican kitchen

  • Reheating enchiladas: covered with foil at about 350°F, the method our guide on how to reheat Mexican leftovers recommends for sauced dishes. Tamales are still better steamed in the husk.
  • Molletes: a split bolillo spread with refried beans and topped with cheese, browned under the broiler.
  • Tostadas and chips: stale corn tortillas crisp in a dry oven, flat on a sheet pan; a light mist from an oil sprayer helps them brown.
  • Small bakes: a quarter sheet pan of roasted chiles or a small pan of cornbread. Our best baking sheets guide covers pans; check the size against your oven’s interior first.

Toaster oven questions, answered

What is the best toaster oven for everyday use?

For most homes, the Breville Smart Oven Pro: it takes a 13-inch pizza, has convection and ten functions, and is small enough to leave on the counter. If you want the simplest possible oven, the BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice does toast, bake, broil and keep warm with two dials.

Which toaster oven brands are worth looking at?

Breville, Cuisinart, Panasonic, Ninja, BLACK+DECKER and Hamilton Beach all sell well-documented models on Amazon in the US, and each of them appears in this guide. Warranty length varies more than you might expect, from one year to three, so check it alongside the features.

Is a toaster oven better than an air fryer?

A toaster oven with a convection fan can air fry, and it can also toast, broil and bake in a flat pan, which a basket air fryer cannot. A basket fryer is usually more compact. If you only have room for one, an air-fry toaster oven like the Cuisinart or Breville Air Fryer Pro covers more jobs.

Can I use a pizza stone in a toaster oven?

Only if it fits with space around it and the maker allows it; check the manual. For proper high-heat pizza, a dedicated countertop oven does a better job, and our best electric pizza oven guide covers those.

What do Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping and The New York Times recommend?

We did not consult their reviews for this guide, so we cannot speak for them. Everything here comes from maker specifications, Amazon listings and retailers, read from a restaurant kitchen’s point of view.

Our final pick for the counter

Buy the Breville Smart Oven Pro if you want one toaster oven that does nearly everything at a sensible size. Choose the Breville Air Fryer Pro for a family and 9 by 13-inch pans, the Cuisinart for air frying with a griddle plate and a three-year warranty, the Panasonic FlashXpress for quick reheating in a small space, and the BLACK+DECKER if you just want toast and a broiler.
