A countertop vacuum sealer earns its space when you portion a whole brisket or a case of chicken thighs. Most weeks in a home kitchen look different: half a block of queso, a few roasted poblanos, leftover carnitas, a marinade for tomorrow’s pollo asado. For that kind of storage a handheld sealer is quicker to grab. It is a small cordless pump that pulls air out through a valve in a zipper bag or a container lid, then switches itself off.
This guide covers handheld and cordless sealers only. For heat-seal machines that make their own bags from a roll, see our best vacuum sealer guide. For each handheld below we list what it works with, what comes in the box, what the maker says about the battery, and how it deals with juices. When neither the maker nor the Amazon listing gives a figure, we write “Not stated”.

Quick verdict: which handheld sealer to buy
For most kitchens the FoodSaver FS2160 handheld is the one to get. It docks to charge, it has a marinate mode and a removable liquid reservoir, and it works with FoodSaver zipper bags and containers, which are easy to find. If you would rather store food in glass, choose the Caso Vacu OneTouch Eco Kit, which comes with three glass containers. Cooks who already use Zwilling Fresh & Save boxes should get the Zwilling Fresh & Save pump.

Our picks for the best handheld vacuum sealer for food
1. FoodSaver FS2160 Multi-Use Handheld Vacuum Sealer – Marinate Mode and a Dock

The FS2160 is FoodSaver’s cordless handheld with a charging dock. You hold it on the valve of a FoodSaver zipper bag or a Preserve & Marinate container, press the button, and it pulls the air out. The listing says it works with FoodSaver vacuum zipper bags, Preserve & Marinate containers and bottle stoppers. All of those are sold separately, so refills are easy to find.
Two features set it apart from a plain pump. The first is a Marinate Mode, which pulses, pulls and releases the vacuum. FoodSaver says this marinates in 12 minutes more effectively than 12 minutes without vacuum, which is handy when the carne asada goes on the grill tonight rather than tomorrow. The second is a removable liquid reservoir, which catches any juice the pump draws up and comes out for cleaning.
The starter set includes the sealer, the dock, two quart zipper bags and a 10-cup Preserve & Marinate container. FoodSaver does not state the vacuum strength or how many bags one charge seals.
Why we like it
- Marinate Mode, per FoodSaver’s listing.
- Removable liquid reservoir for cleaning.
- Works with FoodSaver zipper bags, containers and stoppers.
- Charging dock keeps it on the counter, ready to use.
Key specifications
| Model | FS2160 (2146039) |
|---|---|
| Power | Rechargeable; charging dock |
| Vacuum (stated) | Not stated |
| Charge (stated) | Not stated |
| Works with | FoodSaver zipper bags, Preserve & Marinate containers, bottle stoppers |
| In the box | Sealer, dock, 2 quart zipper bags, 10-cup container |
| Liquids | Removable liquid reservoir |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who wants one small tool for leftovers, cheese and chiles in the fridge, and for quick marinades in the container, with bags that are on most store shelves.
Skip it if you want long-term freezer storage of large cuts; FoodSaver positions this one for the refrigerator and pantry, and a heat-seal machine suits the freezer better.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Marinate cycle built in.
- Liquid reservoir lifts out.
- Starter container included.
Cons
- Only two bags in the box.
- No stated battery life or vacuum strength.
- Warranty term not on the listing.
2. Caso Vacu OneTouch Eco Kit Handheld Vacuum Sealer – Glass Boxes for Soft and Wet Food

Caso Design is a German small-appliance maker, and the Vacu OneTouch is its cordless handheld. This kit includes three stackable glass vacuum containers, ten zip bags in three sizes, two zip lockers, a USB-C charging cable and four sheets of food-manager stickers for dating what you store.
The glass containers are the reason to choose it. Caso says they are particularly suited to pressure-sensitive and liquid food. That covers salsa verde, a container of frijoles charros or ripe avocado halves, which a bag would crush or let leak. The zip bags are 150 microns thick and described as reusable and dishwasher safe. Caso says they are also suitable for sous vide.
The lithium-ion battery runs for up to 150 minutes on a charge, per the listing, and the pump keeps working while it charges. Caso’s listing does not give a vacuum figure.
Why we like it
- Three glass containers in the kit.
- Up to 150 minutes of run time, per the listing.
- Works while charging.
- Reusable, dishwasher-safe 150-micron zip bags.
Key specifications
| Model | Vacu OneTouch (01169) |
|---|---|
| Power | Rechargeable Li-ion, USB-C |
| Vacuum (stated) | Not stated |
| Charge (stated) | Up to 150 minutes |
| Works with | Caso glass containers and Caso zip bags |
| In the box | Sealer, 3 glass containers, 10 zip bags, 2 zip lockers, cable, labels |
| Liquids | Glass containers for liquid food |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who keeps sauces, beans and cut fruit in the fridge and would rather store them in glass than in plastic bags.
Skip it if you need bags in common US sizes; the Caso bags are sized in centimeters and made for Caso’s own valves.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Glass containers for liquids.
- Longest run time stated on this page.
- Labels for dating food.
Cons
- Only ten bags included.
- Accessories are Caso-specific.
- No vacuum figure stated.

3. Zwilling Fresh & Save Vacuum Pump, La Mer – Slim Pump for a Big System

Zwilling’s Fresh & Save line is a system of bags, glass and plastic boxes and wine stoppers that all share one valve. This is the pump on its own, in the blue-accented La Mer finish. Zwilling says it works with every Fresh & Save bag, container and wine sealer, and that all Fresh & Save pumps and lids are compatible with each other.
Zwilling lists it at 1.73 by 1.73 by 7.64 inches and 0.49 pounds, so it fits in a utensil drawer. It charges from the included USB cord, stops by itself once the vacuum is reached, and is described as quiet. The listing says Fresh & Save can be used to marinate and to cook sous vide under vacuum.
One note on this pick: our reusable vacuum bags guide recommends Zwilling’s starter set, which includes the same Fresh & Save pump. We list the pump alone here, in a different color on a different listing, for cooks who already own the boxes or want a second pump in another kitchen.
Why we like it
- Fits every Fresh & Save bag, box and stopper, per Zwilling.
- 0.49 pounds and drawer sized.
- Stops automatically at full vacuum.
- USB charging.
Key specifications
| Model | 36801-324-0 |

| Charge (stated) | Not stated |
| Works with | All Fresh & Save bags, containers and wine sealers |
| In the box | Pump and USB cord |

Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who already uses Fresh & Save containers, or who wants to build a set slowly from one well-supported system.
Skip it if you have no Fresh & Save bags or boxes yet; the pump alone does nothing, and the starter set is the better way in.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large range of compatible boxes and bags.
- Light and compact.
- Auto stop.
Cons
- Nothing to seal in the box.
- Battery run time not stated.
- Same pump as Zwilling’s starter set.
4. FoodSaver Cordless Food Vacuum Sealer, Handheld – Sixty Quart Bags a Charge

This is FoodSaver’s plain cordless handheld, model 31161370. The listing says it seals up to sixty 1-quart bags on a full charge, and that a full charge takes 24 hours. That is the only per-charge figure a major maker gives on this page, and it matters if you portion a lot of shredded cheese or cooked rice at once.
The charging base has built-in cord storage, and the sealer works with all FoodSaver zipper bags, Fresh containers and accessories, per the listing. The box contains the sealer, the base and four quart zipper bags.
Unlike the FS2160 above, the listing does not mention a marinate mode or a liquid reservoir, so keep it to dry and lightly moist food and seal with the bag’s valve facing up.
Why we like it
- Up to 60 quart bags per full charge, per the listing.
- Works with all FoodSaver zipper bags and containers.
- Base with cord storage.
- Four bags included.
Key specifications
| Model | 31161370 |
|---|---|
| Power | Rechargeable; charging base |
| Vacuum (stated) | Not stated |
| Charge (stated) | Up to 60 quart bags; 24-hour full charge |
| Works with | FoodSaver zipper bags, Fresh containers and accessories |
| In the box | Sealer, charging base, 4 quart zipper bags |
| Liquids | Not stated |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a household that seals a batch of bags in one session, such as a weekend of meal prep, and wants a stated number of seals per charge.
Skip it if you want to marinate under vacuum; the FS2160 lists that feature and this one does not.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear per-charge figure.
- Common FoodSaver bags.
- Tidy charging base.
Cons
- Long 24-hour full charge.
- No liquid reservoir listed.
- Older, simpler design.
5. Chef Preserve Compact Vacuum Sealer with 10 Bags – Five Seconds a Bag

Chef Preserve’s sealer is about the size of a pepper grinder, per the listing. You press one button and it empties a bag in about five seconds, then shuts off. The maker says one charge seals up to 1,000 bags, which is its own claim and much higher than the FoodSaver figure above.
The ten bags in this kit are BPA-free and, per the listing, safe in the dishwasher, freezer, refrigerator and microwave. Chef Preserve backs the sealer with a two-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee, the only warranty term stated on this page.
Our reusable bags guide lists the same sealer with 30 bags. We include this 10-bag listing because it is the smaller way to try a handheld before committing to a big stock of bags; the sealer itself is the same model, CP.V1.1.
Why we like it
- About five seconds per bag, per the maker.
- Two-year warranty stated.
- Dishwasher-safe bags.
- Auto shut-off.
Key specifications
| Model | CP.V1.1 |
|---|---|
| Power | Rechargeable, cordless |
| Vacuum (stated) | Not stated |
| Charge (stated) | Up to 1,000 bags (maker claim) |
| Works with | Chef Preserve reusable bags |
| In the box | Sealer and 10 reusable bags |
| Liquids | Not stated for the sealer |
| Warranty | 2 years, plus 60-day money-back |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who wants to try vacuum storage for cheese, tortillas and cooked meat with little commitment and a stated warranty.
Skip it if you need containers for salsas and soups; this kit is bags only.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stated two-year warranty.
- Very quick, per the maker.
- Small enough for a drawer.
Cons
- Only ten bags.
- Battery claim is the maker’s own.
- Same sealer as the 30-bag kit.

6. FRESKO Handheld Vacuum Sealer with 3 Containers and 30 Bags – A Soft Mode for Bread and Berries

FRESKO’s handheld is the only sealer here that lets you choose how hard it pulls. The listing gives a Soft mode at 15 kPa for bread and berries and a Firm mode at 50 kPa for solid food, with an air flow of at least 4.8 liters per minute. Soft mode is the one to use on a stack of bolillos or fresh corn tortillas you do not want flattened.
A detachable water tank catches moisture when you seal meat or wet food. The listing tells you not to fill it past its maximum line. The kit includes three glass containers with a date dial on each lid, plus 30 reusable bags, so you get bags and boxes in one purchase.
FRESKO does not give a per-charge figure beyond ‘hundreds of sealing cycles’, and no warranty term is stated on the listing.
Why we like it
- Two suction levels, 15 and 50 kPa, per the listing.
- Detachable water tank.
- Glass containers with date dials.
- 30 bags included.
Key specifications
| Model | HV9 |
|---|---|
| Power | Cordless, rechargeable |
| Vacuum (stated) | Soft 15 kPa / Firm 50 kPa |

| Works with | FRESKO bags and containers |
| In the box | Sealer, 3 glass containers, 30 bags |
| Liquids | Detachable water tank |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who stores bread, soft fruit or delicate herbs and wants control over how hard the pump pulls.
Skip it if you want a long-established brand with refills in stores; FRESKO bags are mostly sold online.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Adjustable suction.
- Bags and glass boxes in one kit.
- Visible, removable water tank.
Cons
- Newer brand with a short track record.
- No warranty term stated.
- Battery life not quantified.
7. MOMODA Electric Handheld Vacuum Sealer Pump – Fits Valve Bags and Jar Lids

MOMODA also sells reusable sous vide bags, and this is its electric pump sold on its own. The listing says it fits standard reusable vacuum zipper bags that have an air valve, and regular and wide-mouth Mason jar sealer attachments, so one pump can serve the bags you already own and a jar of dried chiles or ground coffee.
It runs on a built-in rechargeable battery with a USB charging cable, and the body is BPA-free ABS with a non-slip grip, per the listing. MOMODA presents it as a stand-alone pump or as a replacement for a lost or worn-out one.
There are no bags or jar lids in the box, and no battery figure or warranty term is stated. Check that your bags use a round valve of the common type before you buy.
Why we like it
- Works with common valve bags, per the listing.
- Fits Mason jar sealer attachments.
- USB rechargeable.
- Light ABS body with a grip.
Key specifications
| Model | S30-W |
|---|---|
| Power | Rechargeable, USB cable |
| Vacuum (stated) | Not stated |
| Charge (stated) | Not stated |
| Works with | Standard valve zipper bags; Mason jar sealer attachments |
| In the box | Pump and USB cable |
| Liquids | Not stated |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who already has valve bags or jar sealer lids and needs a pump, either a first one or a spare.
Skip it if you are starting from nothing; a kit with bags and containers costs less effort to set up.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Works across bag brands with standard valves.
- Doubles as a jar sealer pump.
- Compact.
Cons
- Nothing to seal in the box.
- No stated battery life.
- Fit with every valve is not guaranteed.
What a handheld sealer can’t do for food safety
Taking the air out of a bag slows staling and freezer burn. It does not make food shelf stable. The University of Connecticut Extension, in its guide to home vacuum packaging, explains that botulism is most likely in low-acid, moist foods packed without air, and that the bacteria may give no sign they are growing. Its rules are plain: perishable food in a vacuum package must be refrigerated between 34 and 38°F or frozen at 0°F, and it cannot be stored safely at room temperature.
The same guide says vacuum sealers are not a substitute for heat processing in home canning. It recommends opening a frozen vacuum package to let some air in and thawing it in the refrigerator. Dry foods such as rice, crackers, nuts, jerky and dried chiles can be kept in vacuum bags at room temperature. For leftover carnitas, cooked beans, salsa or rice, a handheld sealer helps them keep better in the fridge or freezer, and you still treat them as perishable. See our guide on reheating Mexican leftovers for the other end of the job.

How to choose a handheld vacuum sealer
The bag system comes first. A handheld seals through a valve, so it only works with bags and lids that match it. FoodSaver zipper bags are sold in most supermarkets, Zwilling Fresh & Save has the widest range of boxes, and Caso and FRESKO sell their own. Pick the system whose refills you can buy easily.
Containers for anything wet. A handheld pulls juice toward the pump. If you store salsas, beans or marinades, choose a kit with containers (Caso, FRESKO) or a sealer with a liquid reservoir (FoodSaver FS2160). For very wet food, a chamber machine is the proper tool; see our vacuum sealers for wet foods.
Battery and charging. Only some makers give numbers: up to 60 quart bags for the FoodSaver 31161370, up to 150 minutes for the Caso, and up to 1,000 bags claimed by Chef Preserve. A dock or base keeps the pump charged and easy to find.
Gentle suction. Tortillas, bread and berries crush under full vacuum. The FRESKO’s soft mode or the short stop of a pump on a rigid container protects them.
Handheld or countertop. A handheld is for daily storage in the fridge and pantry. For freezing large cuts for months, a heat-sealed bag from a countertop machine is the usual choice; our best vacuum sealer guide covers those, and the chamber vacuum sealer guide covers commercial-style machines.

How we picked these seven handheld sealers
We have not used these sealers in Julia’s kitchen for this guide. We started from the handheld and cordless sealers sold on Amazon in the US, kept only items in stock when we checked, and dropped listings from unidentifiable sellers. We left out models already recommended in our other vacuum guides, except two listings that share a model with a pick elsewhere, and we say so in each pick. Specifications come from the makers’ own pages and the Amazon listings, and we looked for recalls on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s site for every brand here and found none for these sealers.
Bags and containers are covered in their own guides: vacuum seal bags, reusable vacuum bags and vacuum seal containers.
Handheld sealer questions, answered
Do handheld vacuum sealers really work?
Yes, for what they are made for. They remove air from valve bags and containers so food in the fridge and pantry keeps longer. They do not heat-seal ordinary bags and are not built for long-term freezing of big cuts.
Can I use any zipper bag with a handheld sealer?
No. The bag needs a one-way valve that matches the pump. Use the maker’s own bags, or check that a pump like the MOMODA lists your bag type.
Can I vacuum seal tortillas with a handheld?
Yes, gently. Use a soft mode like the FRESKO’s, or stop the pump early, so the stack does not stick together. Keep fresh tortillas in the fridge or freezer.
Is vacuum-sealed food safe at room temperature?
Only dry food such as rice, nuts, jerky and dried chiles, per the University of Connecticut Extension. Perishable food stays refrigerated at 34 to 38°F or frozen at 0°F.
Can I marinate with a handheld vacuum sealer?
Yes, in a container made for it. The FoodSaver FS2160 has a marinate cycle for its Preserve & Marinate container, and Zwilling says Fresh & Save can be used to marinate.

Our final pick for vacuum storage by hand
Buy the FoodSaver FS2160 if you want the best handheld vacuum sealer for food in most kitchens: it docks, marinates, catches juices and uses bags you can find anywhere. Choose the Caso kit for glass storage, the Zwilling pump if you already own Fresh & Save boxes, and the FRESKO when bread and soft fruit need a light touch. Keep perishable food cold whatever you seal it with.
Need a machine for the freezer as well? See our best vacuum sealer guide, and before you portion chiles for storage, read Mexican chiles explained. Or let us do the cooking: see the menu or call to order.
