A pantry shelf is where good intentions go to die. There is half a bag of masa harina held shut with a clip, three opened boxes of pasta, a bag of pinto beans with a rip in it and dried chiles that have gone a little soft. Containers do not fix cooking, but they do mean you can see what you have.
This guide is about dry goods on a shelf. For leftovers in the fridge, see our food storage containers guide. For bins, can racks and door baskets, see the pantry organizers guide. Here we look at how well the lid seals, how the sizes match what you buy, and how they fit the shelf.

Quick verdict: which pantry containers to buy
For most kitchens, buy the Rubbermaid Brilliance Pantry set: ten sizes, a latching lid and the best independent seal result we could read. Bakers should look at the Progressive ProKeeper Baker’s Set. If you lose lids, the Snapware canisters have them attached. OXO POP is the fastest to open, but one test found its seal let in water, so read that entry before you buy.

Our picks for the best pantry storage containers
Every entry repeats the seal wording exactly as the maker uses it. “Airtight”, “air-resistant” and no claim at all are three different promises, and the differences matter if you keep things for months.
1. Rubbermaid Brilliance Pantry 10-Container Set – A Seal That Passed a Water Test

This set is our first choice because it is the one pantry system here with a real independent test behind its seal. Your Best Digs sealed tissue inside each container it tried, then held them under water. It described the Rubbermaid Brilliance set it used as having a 100 percent airtight seal, thanks to a thick silicone gasket, and as one you can rely on to keep pantry goods fresh and pest-free. That test was updated in 2022 and may not have used these exact sizes, but it covers the same latching-lid Brilliance design.
This set has ten containers, from a half cup up to 16 cups: 16, 12, 7.8 and 6.6-cup sizes, two 3.2-cup, two 1.3-cup and two half-cup, plus a half-cup scoop. That is enough to handle flour and rice at one end and spices or seeds at the other. The title calls it a 10-piece set, and that is how it counts containers.
The clear Tritan plastic lets you read the contents at a glance. Rubbermaid says it is shatter-resistant, BPA-free, stackable, dishwasher safe, and resistant to odors and stains. Note that our flour page uses a single 16-cup Brilliance container and our cereal page a separate Brilliance keeper; this is the full pantry set.
Why we like it
- Independent water test on the Brilliance design
- Ten sizes from 0.5 to 16 cups
- Clear Tritan body
- Dishwasher safe, per Rubbermaid
Key specifications
| Model | 2179274 |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 10 containers + scoop |
| Sizes | 0.5 to 16 cups |
| Lid | Latching |
| Seal wording | Airtight, per Rubbermaid |
| Material | Tritan plastic |
| Dishwasher | Yes |
| Best for | A whole mixed pantry |
Why we recommend it
Buy this if you want one set to store the whole shelf, from masa harina to small bags of seeds, and you value a tested seal over a one-press lid.
Skip it if you dislike latches, since opening them takes two hands. OXO’s push-button lid is quicker.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strongest seal evidence here
- Wide size range
- Stacks neatly
Cons
- Latches take two hands
- Plastic can scuff
- Test is from 2022
2. Progressive ProKeeper Baker’s 6-Piece Set – Made for Flour and Sugar

Your Best Digs named the Progressive Prepworks ProKeeper line as its best overall dry food container. It called the seals perfectly airtight with one exception: the white sugar keeper’s gasket was thinner and did not secure the spout cover tightly enough. If you buy this set, that is a useful warning, particularly in humid places like Houston.
The set is purpose-built. A 4-quart flour keeper holds 5 pounds of flour and has a leveling bar, a 2.5-quart sugar keeper holds 4 pounds and has a flip spout, and a 1.5-quart brown sugar keeper comes with a terra cotta disk for keeping brown sugar soft. There is also a powdered sugar keeper and two mini containers.
This is a set for bakers more than for a general pantry, though a 4-quart keeper works just as well for masa harina. Measurement marks show how much you have left. It is dishwasher safe, per the listing. A newer ProKeeper+ flour keeper is on our flour page; this set is a separate product, sold here by a third-party seller.
Why we like it
- Top-rated line in an independent test
- Leveling bar and flip spout
- Terra cotta disk for brown sugar
- Measurement marks
Key specifications
| Model | PKS-1SET |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 6 containers |
| Sizes | Mini up to 4 qt |
| Lid | Latching or spout, by container |
| Seal wording | Airtight, per the listing |
| Material | Plastic |
| Dishwasher | Yes |
| Best for | Flour, sugar, masa harina |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you bake regularly, or if a 5-pound bag of flour or masa harina has nowhere to live. The accessories solve real problems for the people who would use them.
Skip it if you rarely bake. Tall, narrow containers will do more for rice, beans and pasta.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Purpose-built accessories
- Sized for store bags
- Tested line
Cons
- Sugar lid weak in one test
- Specialized sizes
- Third-party seller
3. Snapware 8-Pack Plastic Canisters – Attached Lids That Stay Out of the Way

Lost lids are a real pantry problem, and these simply do not have that problem. Each canister has an attached lid that clicks into a lock and stays out of the way while you scoop or pour. Wide openings make refilling a simple job, and you do not have to set anything down on a floury counter.
The listing’s size breakdown runs from 2.9 to 18.5 cups. Its list adds up to nine canisters while the title says eight, so count on eight and check the box. That range is more mid-size than most, and well suited to dried beans, rice and pasta in their usual quantities.
Pay attention to the wording. Snapware says “air-resistant”, not airtight. For everyday goods you go through in a few weeks, that may well be enough, but for something you buy in bulk and keep for months, a set with a tested seal is the safer buy. The listing does not state dishwasher use.
Why we like it
- Attached lids cannot get lost
- Wide openings for scooping
- Useful mid-size range
- Stacks neatly in a cabinet
Key specifications
| Model | SW10004 |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 8 canisters |
| Sizes | 2.9 to 18.5 cups |
| Lid | Attached, locking |
| Seal wording | Air-resistant, per Snapware |
| Material | BPA-free plastic |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
| Best for | Beans, rice, snacks |
Why we recommend it
This suits a busy family pantry where containers get opened all day, by several people, and lids tend to walk away.
Skip it if you are storing goods long-term, or are in a damp climate. The maker’s own wording stops short of airtight.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No loose lids
- Easy to refill
- Sold by Amazon at the time we checked
Cons
- Not called airtight
- Dishwasher use not stated
- Hinges can eventually wear
4. OXO Good Grips 20-Piece POP Container Set – Fast Lids, with an Honest Caveat

OXO’s POP containers are the look most people picture when they think of an organized pantry. You press a button to seal and press again to open, and the button works as a handle for the lid. This 20-piece set covers a huge range, from 0.2 to 6 quarts, in rectangles and squares that stack and line up on a shelf.
Now the caveat. OXO calls the seal airtight, but Your Best Digs held a POP set under water in its 2022 update and reported that water seeped in. It concluded “they just don’t work” for that purpose. A water test is harsher than a shelf, and OXO may have changed the design since, so we cannot say how this set would do today. We do think you should know that before buying.
OXO says not to carry POP containers by the lid, and to always use the button. They are top-rack dishwasher safe. Our pantry organizer page lists a 10-piece POP set and our flour page a single 4.4-quart container. This is the much larger version for filling a whole pantry.
Why we like it
- One-press lids
- Widest size range here
- Square shapes line up on a shelf
- Top-rack dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Model | 11236600 |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 20 pieces |
| Sizes | 0.2 to 6 qt |
| Lid | Push button |
| Seal wording | Airtight, per OXO; disputed by one test |
| Material | Plastic, BPA free |
| Dishwasher | Top rack |
| Best for | Daily-use goods, tidy shelves |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if speed and a uniform look matter most, and you go through your staples quickly enough that a seal is not critical.
Skip it if you want the strongest evidence of an airtight seal, or if pantry moths or humidity are a worry. Choose the Rubbermaid instead.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Quickest lid here
- Very wide range
- Looks uniform
Cons
- Seal questioned in one test
- A big commitment
- Do not carry by the lid

5. Lock & Lock Easy Essentials Pantry Container, 16.9 Cup – A Single Tall Container with Four Tabs

Sometimes you do not need a set, and only want a home for one big bag of chips or rice. This 16.9-cup square container is sold alone. LocknLock’s lid has four hinges and locks on all sides, and the maker says that system is 100 percent airtight and leakproof.
Four locking tabs is the same idea used on a lot of good food storage, and it means the lid works in the fridge, freezer and pantry too. The maker says it is microwave and dishwasher safe. A square footprint helps it line up on a shelf without wasting corners.
The airtight claim here comes from the maker. We read no independent test of this model. Because it is sold singly, you can buy one, see how you like it and add more, instead of committing to a whole set.
Why we like it
- Sold one at a time
- Four-hinge locking lid
- Fridge, freezer and pantry use
- Dishwasher and microwave safe
Key specifications
| Model | HPL822R |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 1 container |
| Sizes | 16.9 cups |
| Lid | 4-hinge locking |
| Seal wording | 100% airtight, per the maker |
| Material | BPA-free plastic |
| Dishwasher | Yes |
| Best for | Chips, rice, one big item |
Why we recommend it
This suits someone who has one problem to solve, or wants to try this style of lid before buying more.
Skip it if you want a matched pantry from one purchase. A set will be much simpler and more consistent.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Try one before buying more
- Locks on four sides
- Works in fridge or freezer
Cons
- Only one size here
- Airtight claim is the maker’s
- Four tabs take a moment
6. Komax Biokips Pasta Containers, 44 oz, Set of 4 – Tall Tubes for Pasta and Spaghetti

Spaghetti is a nuisance in a square container. These round tubes solve that: each holds 44 ounces, measures 4.3 by 10.7 inches, and by Komax’s account holds a 1-pound box of pasta or at least two boxes of thin spaghetti. That also makes them handy for fideo or long dried chiles.
Komax says it is a South Korean company with 47 years in the business, and that this four-tab lid design won a Red Dot Design Award in 2004. The containers are polypropylene and are listed as dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe, and they are called airtight in the title.
The wording on the listing is enthusiastic, so we treat the award and seal as the maker’s claims. A round container wastes shelf space compared with a square, and this set does one job. The lead offer comes from a third-party seller.
Why we like it
- Holds long pasta upright or flat
- Made in South Korea
- Four-tab locking lid
- Dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe
Key specifications
| Model | Not stated |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 4 containers |
| Sizes | 44 oz each |
| Lid | 4-tab locking |
| Seal wording | Airtight, per the title |
| Material | Polypropylene |
| Dishwasher | Yes |
| Best for | Pasta, fideo, long dried goods |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if your pantry is full of half-open pasta boxes, and you want a dedicated solution for them.
Skip it if you want one shape for everything. Round tubes will not stack as tightly as square containers.
Pros and cons
Pros
- The right shape for pasta
- Fits a full pound
- Freezer safe too
Cons
- Single-purpose
- Round shape uses more shelf
- Third-party seller
7. Cambro 4-Quart and 6-Quart Containers with Lids – The Restaurant Square for Bulk

Walk into a restaurant dry store and you will likely see square containers like these. This set is one 4-quart and one 6-quart square with matching lids. The listing says they are NSF listed, freezer and dishwasher safe, and can handle temperatures from -40 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and that the square shape fits more on a shelf.
They suit bulk buys: a big bag of pinto beans, a large sack of rice or a bag of dried chiles. Open tops are wide enough for a scoop or a measuring cup, and the big volume means you can pour in a whole bag. This is two containers and not a restaurant case pack, so it fits a home pantry.
Cambro’s listing does not say airtight, so we would not treat these as one. Also, note the sizes can be a stretch for a small kitchen cabinet, so measure shelf height first. Our flour page lists a 6-quart Cambro pair. This set adds a 4-quart, for a household that wants two sizes. It is sold by a third-party seller.
Why we like it
- Straightforward commercial design
- NSF listed, per the listing
- Wide-top access for scooping
- Good for bulk bags
Key specifications
| Model | 6SFSPP190, 4SFSPP190, SFC2452, SFC6451 |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 2 containers, 2 lids |
| Sizes | 4 qt and 6 qt |
| Lid | Separate snap-on |
| Seal wording | Not stated |
| Material | Food-grade plastic, not further stated |
| Dishwasher | Yes |
| Best for | Bulk beans, rice, flour |
Why we recommend it
This suits a household buying rice and beans in bulk, where shelf capacity and scooping count for more than looks.
Skip it if your shelves are short, or if a truly airtight lid is your goal.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large capacity
- Sturdy, plain build
- Square footprint
Cons
- Airtight not stated
- Tall for some cabinets
- Third-party seller
8. Vtopmart 32-Piece Airtight Food Storage Set – A Lot of Containers for the Money

If you are refilling a walk-in pantry from scratch, the count matters. This set has 32 containers: 2 tall at 2.5 quarts, 10 large at 1.8 quarts, 10 medium at 1.5 quarts and 10 small at 0.7 quarts, with 32 reusable labels. That is the most storage on the page in one box.
Side-locking lids have a silicone gasket, the top flips open, and Vtopmart describes the set as airtight and BPA free. That is the brand’s own description, and we read no independent test of it. Your Best Digs did report that Chef’s Path, another locking-lid brand, let water in during its test, so we would not assume every lid of this type seals.
Vtopmart sells largely on Amazon. It suits buyers who want quantity and a matching shelf look at the cost of less evidence. A 24-piece Vtopmart set is on our pantry organizer page, and this set is different, with more containers and different sizes.
Why we like it
- 32 containers and 32 labels
- Four useful sizes
- Flip-top side-lock lids
- Clear, uniform shelf look
Key specifications
| Model | 32 Piezas |
|---|---|
| Pieces | 32 containers |
| Sizes | 0.7 to 2.5 qt |
| Lid | Side-locking, flip top |
| Seal wording | Airtight, per Vtopmart |
| Material | BPA-free plastic |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
| Best for | Filling a large pantry |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you have the shelves to fill, and a tidy, matched look is your main goal.
Skip it if you have an ordinary cabinet. Thirty-two containers is far more than most homes can use.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Lots of capacity
- Labels included
- Uniform look
Cons
- Seal not independently tested
- Smaller online brand
- Far too many for small pantries
How to choose containers for dry goods
The seal
Airtight is an easy word to print. In Your Best Digs’ water test, which it last updated in 2022, only a few of the seven sets kept tissue dry. The ProKeeper and Rubbermaid Brilliance did well, while OXO POP and Chef’s Path let water in. A shelf is gentler than a bowl of water, so failing is not a disaster, but the seal is worth caring about for goods you will keep for months.

Match the size to what you buy
Before ordering, look at how you actually buy food. A 5-pound bag of flour wants about 4 quarts, according to ProKeeper’s sizing. A 1-pound box of pasta fits a 44-ounce tube, per Komax. Our guides to the best flour container and the best cereal containers go into more detail for those goods.
Measure the shelf height
Many pantry problems are shelf problems. Measure the height, the depth and the width before you buy, and remember to allow for a hand and any lid that swings up. Square and rectangular shapes use a shelf better than round ones.
Plastic or glass
All of our picks are plastic, because that is where most tight-sealing pantry sets are. If you want glass or steel on an open shelf, see our canister set guide.

Lid style
Latches and four-tab locks are often tighter but take two hands. Buttons are quick. Attached lids cannot be lost. Think about who opens these containers, and how often.
How we picked these eight
We started with Amazon’s stock from makers we could identify, and left out the exact items already on our other storage pages. Some picks come from a line that those pages also use, like the POP, Brilliance and Cambro lines, but each is a different set here, and the entries say so. We read Your Best Digs’ dry storage review, the one independent seal test we could open, and we note that it was last updated in 2022 and that its summary counts are not entirely consistent. Where it does not cover a product, the pick rests on the maker’s details. We have not used these ourselves, and we state no prices because they change.
Pantry container questions, answered
What are the top pantry storage containers for dry goods?
The Rubbermaid Brilliance line and the ProKeeper line have the best seal evidence we could read. See the entries above for what that test did and did not cover.
Do pantry containers keep bugs out?
A tight seal helps, and Your Best Digs treats that as part of the goal. We cannot promise that any container stops all pests. Inspect new bags and keep the shelf clean.
Should I keep food in its original bag inside the container?
That is a personal choice, but it is worth keeping the label or cutting out the cooking instructions, and writing a date on the container. Follow the package’s own storage directions.
How should I store dried chiles and masa harina?
In a sealed container, away from heat and light. Our guides on Mexican chiles and nixtamalization explain what those ingredients are, and our pantry staples guide lists what is worth buying.
Are these containers dishwasher safe?
Most are, but Snapware’s and Vtopmart’s listings do not state it, and OXO limits POP to the top rack. Make sure anything you wash is fully dry before it goes back on a shelf.
Our final pick for a shelf that stays sorted
Buy the Rubbermaid Brilliance Pantry set if you want one good answer, add a ProKeeper set if you bake, and keep Snapware in mind if lids tend to disappear. Then you will always have beans ready for our charro or refried beans.
And if the shelf is bare tonight, see the menu or call to order.

Whatever you buy, write the date on anything you decant, because a clear container cannot tell you how old the rice is.
